Fair days, back in the day First event was a carnival in Quilcene in 1902; community started exhibiting in 1947 A brief history of a long-running fair 1902: The Jefferson County Fair Association was first held as a Forester Carnival in Quilcene. 1903: Officially formed with by-laws and an Article of Corporation. 1,000 shares were sold at $1 each to support the yearly event. 1911: The fair was moved to Port Townsend, land was purchased and is the currant grounds for the fair. Capital stock was increased to 10,000 shares. The name was changed to Olympic Peninsula Fair Association with nine board members and others as heads of departments from the community. A race track, baseball field, and buildings for the exhibits were soon build. 1931-1946: There were no fairs and the buildings were torn down by WPA workers. 1930: 4-H clubs were formed here about held a yearly 4-H fair in Quilcene or Port Townsend. 1947: The community was invited to enter exhibits. 1950: The fair was called Jefferson County 4-H Fair Association and new by-laws were drawn up. The elected trustees wanted it to be a county fair and open to all residences of the county. They developed this into the Jefferson County Fair Association on the grounds that the fairs had been held in previous years. The first building was a 40’x80’ frame building to hold the exhibits. A second building and grand stands were build the next year. 1950-Today: Many buildings have been added over the years; all build with volunteers labor to the grand fair grounds we have today. Today, there is a 70-unit camp ground, and buildings are rented to the community during the off season. Many people have been involved with the fair over all these years and there would not be a fair without volunteers.
