Benson Alvarez, 5, of Port Townsend has seen plenty of Dungeness crabs, but not a king crab so up close and personal. This crustacean is one of the many crab varieties that come with a visit to the Port Townsend Marine Science Center at Fort Worden. Photo by Patrick J. Sullivan

Port Townsend Marine Science Center exhibits all things local, marine What are some of the basics of your nonprofit? The Marine Science Center was founded in 1982 by two Port Townsend women, Judy D’Amore and Libby Palmer. The goal was to be a place for children to learn about local marine life and inspire conservation of the Salish Sea through exhibits and lifelong learning, says Alison Riley, marketing and development coordinator. Who are your staff? “We have eight full-time staff members, and, over the summer, four AmeriCorps volunteers and three interns. But really we’re very dependent on our volunteers. We have 100 to 150 community members who donate their time working with us. Some of these volunteers have been with us for 30 years, and they help us with all aspects of our operations.” How are you local? “We’ve been in the same location at Fort Worden State Park since 1982. All of our animal exhibits are gathered from waters right off the coast from Port Townsend, and our science is focused on studying plants and animals in the Salish Sea. We also reach out to local school children in Jefferson and Clallam counties. We’re interested in inspiring local populations to connect with the Salish Sea.”

Lori Bernstein serves up some popcorn at the Rose Theatre. Photo by Hannah Ray Lambert

The Rose Theatre spices up popcorn About the Rose Theatre: The Rose Theatre opened as a vaudeville house in the early 1900s, closed its doors in the late 1950s, and reopened as a cinema in 1992. Manager Lori Bernstein says the popcorn has been popular ever since. The concessions area also has a spice bar and recipe book for customers to record their favorite seasoning combination. For example, dessert popcorn has butter, sugar and cinnamon. Bernstein says a little salt isn’t bad, either. What does being local mean to you? “We hire high school kids for our staff. For many, it’s their first job ever. We’ve had kids come back and they have told us how valuable it was to get their start here. It’s one of my favorite parts about working here and it can be one of the hardest too, because every June two-thirds of our staff graduate, and then in September they head off to college so we’re constantly hiring new kids. And it’s hard to say goodbye sometimes. “We also carry a lot of local concessions including Candice’s Cookies, baked goods from Ancient Grains, Whidbey Island Ice Cream bars, candy from Elevated Ice Cream and Lehani’s, and Pacific Northwest beers and wines.” What kind of events do you do with the community? “Rocky [Friedman, the owner] has done a lot of free community movies, like for Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday every year. We used to do free outdoor movies at Memorial Field. On Halloween we give out 700 plus bags of popcorn during the parade.”

Any out-of-the-ordinary orders? “People often ask for the Marilyn (our largest popcorn) in thirds and ask us to stop so they can season between the layers. Some people aren’t familiar with the nutritional yeast, so that can be puzzling for them. Some people think we might as well close the doors if we’re out of parmesan. Someone ordered a lemonade with a squirt of butter in it. That was an odd one.”

N S U LA . J

Where do your seasonings come from? “One of the favorites is ‘Silverwater Spice’ [from Silverwater Cafe next door]. ‘Hometown’ used to be made by a man who lived here, Joel Levy. He was a local musician, a sweetheart. He passed away, but his relatives keep it going.”

Michelle Grupe designs, makes and sells children’s clothing at her Port Townsend business, Seams to Last. Photo by Hannah Ray Lambert

Seams to Last is ‘sheer fun’ About Seams to Last: Michelle Grupe has worked as a children’s clothing designer in Port Townsend for three decades. She stocks Seams to Last with everything from recycled and upcycled clothes to handdyed and handmade items. What makes Seams to Last local? “A lot of products are made by us. We make a line of clothes and sell the fabrics we make the clothes with. We also have seven local artists who sell their handmade things in the store. I can also do custom orders. People come in and say they like a design, and they can choose the fabric.” What’s different about being a business geared toward children? “Kids aren’t as picky as adults are, and you can be really creative. The fabrics for kids are amazing. It’s just flat-out fun. I’ve witnessed a lot of kids negotiating with their parents about what they would like to get and how much the parents are willing to pay. It’s pretty interesting. I see collaboration. I think parents do a really good job of listening to their kids and giving them choices they can work with.”

What’s the best part of being a business in Port Townsend? “The feeling of community and the friendships that are developed. I have regular customers who come back all the time and I get to know them really well. I learn a lot about what people want. Not just from here, but also from Seattle and all over the country. I have people who bought clothes for their kids and now those kids have grown up and are coming here and have kids. “It really enables me to have the lifestyle I’ve always wanted, that I’ve always dreamed of. To be able to be creative and to develop and sell my own product and not have to travel or do wholesale. I can keep the integrity of my product R SO N C and sell it locally.” FE

About the Wine Seller: Located in the heart of downtown Port Townsend on Water Street, the Wine Seller is a wine, beer and cheese shop that opened in 1982. It’s owned by Joe Euro F F ER S O and employs three part-time employees. JE The small store supplies local festivals and events – including the Concerts on the Dock summer music series – and offers great deals that can compete with national grocery stores. We asked Euro about his business: YMPIC OL P

What makes the Wine Seller local? “Well, it’s been here since 1982. I own and operate it with my family. We sell wines from all over the world and I put my own flair and expertise into selling wine. We put the right bottle in people’s hands, and that’s one of my favorite things to do, recommending wines that they can put on their table.” What sets the Wine Seller apart from wine stores elsewhere? “We’re still competitive in prices, despite our size. People don’t think we are. They stop in thinking we’re some sort of touristy store and they tell me how great the prices are. We order a lot of wines you can’t find in supermarkets, wines that would be hard to find anywhere actually.” What is your favorite thing about being a local business? “I get to live here and have my shop in this wonderful little corner of the world. I get to talk to beer and wine lovers on a daily basis. Half the time, I’m asked for recommendations from people, and they trust my judgment.”

Len Chute, Taran Minnihan, Kris DuMond and Mark DuMond are at the helm of AutoWorks in Port Townsend. Photo by Allison Arthur

AutoWorks aims to keep locals up and driving About the business: AutoWorks was started in 1996 by Steve and Kathy Tucker, who sold it 11 years ago to Mark and Kris DuMond. Mark, who graduated from Quilcene High School in 1985, has recently become a Port Townsend police officer. Kris oversees the day-today operations of AutoWorks; Mark also is there occasionally. The company, located at 2313 Third St. in Port Townsend, off Upper Sims Way, offers a full line of maintenance and repairs, and works on most vehicles, including hybrids. Would you call this a family-run business? “We’re more of a family,” says Kris. “Our son, Taran Minnihan, is the service manager. Larry Rubatino, service writer, we’ve known for years. Len Chute has been here forever. He started with Steve and Kathy in 1996.” How do you cater to the local community? “We like to think that people come here because they feel like they are treated as family when they come.” What do you do in the community? “We love being here and we love being able to give back. We’re school supporters, but we don’t just stop with Port Townsend.”

What about locals supporting locals? “Local businesses bring revenue to the city which improves the city and allows families to live here. Our daughter just opened ‘Hey Baby’ down the street. I hope locals support her and other local businesses. It’s important. We all live here and work here.”

. LA J EF

What do you wish people knew about your business? “People are under the misconception that they have to take their car to the dealer, and they don’t. If it’s a recall, they do, but otherwise, we can do everything. We have technology that many shops don’t have. We want people to know we are part of the community. We live here.”

Tanda Design builds reputation with beautiful buildings About the business: Tanda Design is a small manufacturing firm building customized small structures, which are assembled in a plant in Quilcene and then delivered fully finished. The company takes pride in designing beautiful buildings and showcasing them in a landscaped setting in downtown Quilcene, which doubles as a community resource, says company president Jonathon Blum. How do you keep it local? “We’re pretty seriously dedicated to Jefferson County. We employ six local people to build, and, since our sales are mostly beyond Jefferson County, we bring outside money into the community. Having a manufacturer in the county is bringing in money, not just passing it around. We’re an example of making jobs here for the benefit of the community.” What do you buy locally? “We love Carl’s Building Supply. You get what you ask for, and they bring it quickly. Edensaw is a great resource.”

How do you support the local community? “Our display area goes well beyond just selling sheds. The owner loves landscaping, and we are trying to do our part to improve Quilcene’s looks and make it a better place for everyone.”

. LA J EF

What’s your style? “We want to make buildings that are beautiful and evocative spaces. We have a ridiculously sophisticated CAD program that kicks out very accurate blueprints, gives the exact amount for materials and provides 3-D images to the customer, so we’re all on the same page. We don’t want to be a big company; we don’t want a lot of staff. Having a tight group at work makes it fun.”

why buy

LOCAL

• Support the environment Local products use a smaller carbon footprint to enter your home. In 2014, 2.18 tons of salmon sold in our store arrived by bicycle delivery!

• Support jobs National chains often bring loss of jobs. The opening of a Wal-Mart reduces retail employment by an average of 150 jobs in the county of its location. Your local food co-op supports over 100 staff members. • Support choice & diversity Though a single local shop likely stocks a smaller selection than can be found online or at large chains, a multiplicity of independent retailers creates great diversity. Not able to find what you’re looking for? Just ask our Member Services Desk staff if we can get it for you.

•Support quality of life Driving an hour or more to shop elsewhere takes quality time away from your day and personal relationships. Wouldn’t you rather be gardening?

t the Food Co-op?

•Support the local tax base A portion of the sales tax you pay for non-food items stays in our own county for vital public services. •Support community organizations Non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses. In 2014, the Food Co-op paid out $36,893 to support local non-profit organizations. •Support your health The shorter the time between the farm and your table, the less likely it is that nutrients will be lost from fresh food.

•Support land preservation When farmers get paid more for their products by marketing locally, they’re less likely to sell farmland for development. Did you know you can ask our clerks to “round up” to the nearest dollar on your register total and the spare change goes to the Jefferson Land Trust?

Top Ten Reasons to Shop Locally

When you buy local ... You are supporting yourself. When you buy local, you’re putting money back into the pockets of other local business, who also shop locally. You are supporting nonprofits that support your community. Studies show that nonprofits receive an average of 250 times more support from small businesses than large, national corporations. You are supporting one-of-a-kind businesses. Check out the Port Townsend Farmers Market on any Saturday from April through December. It’s a showcase of small businesses. You are supporting the environment. When you shop close to home, you’re saving gas and the planet. You’re creating jobs! Local businesses hire local employees. It’s that simple. You get better service. When you buy goods and services from local people on a regular basis, odds are you’ll get known and get better service. You are investing in your community. Think Quimper Mercantile, and so many other businesses that make the community a better place to live, work and play. Local taxes, local infrastructure The more you buy locally, the more sales tax revenue is generated to help the city and county pay for services you also need and enjoy. Local prosperity The more you spend locally, the more money circulates where you live, not where bankers and big corporations are based. Local fun It’s so much more fun to get to know people and become Jan, Susan, Tom, David or (your name here) than it is to go some place where people don’t know you and only want your money. k. buy. thin be.

Warehousemen Leon Thibeault and Caleb Montgomery are happy to greet customers with the products they want at the CHS feed store in Chimacum. Photo by Viviann Kuehl

CHS offers feed, fuel for local farmers and friends About the business: The Chimacum-area feed store and petroleum company has been a hub of the local growers community for 60-odd years. Local farmers have been relying on CHS through a couple of name changes for a full range of fuel, feed and farm supplies. How did the store’s name change? “Cenex, begun in the 1950s, acquired Western Farmers Association in 1982,” said manager Ryan Strong. “Then Cenex and Harvest States merged in 1998 to become Cenex Harvest States, now officially CHS Inc. Cenex remains the energy brand of CHS and we still stand for the same fine products and service that we always have.” How do you cater to local shoppers? “In a small community, you need service. When we see our regular customers coming in, we try to get their products ready to go, so it’s there when they come in. We’ve done a good job of getting in the things that customers want, at competitive prices. We offer organic feeds, ethanol-free gas, off-road diesel, and, if we don’t have it, we will try to find it.” How do you contribute to the local economy? “Our eight employees spend their pay in the community, and we like to think we make a difference R SO N CO for local farmers in their cash flow when it FE comes to getting the things they need.”

Better Living Through Coffee, a community hub About Better Living Through Coffee (BLTC): This Port Townsend favorite local coffeehouse has been in business for six years. Featuring local, organic ingredients for food and beans from Port Townsend Coffee Roasting, Better Living Through Coffee makes a real attempt to practice sustainability through sourcing locally. We talked to Michael LeDonna and Ben Cook, and here’s what they said: What does being local mean to you? “It’s a part of our ethos, part of our offering to the community. Outside of the food, which we try as hard as we can to source locally, we have just the place itself, the establishment. People tend to use it as a town living room and meeting place. It’s become kind of a community resource.” What do you think your customers love most about BLTC? “The coffee. Some say it’s addictive. And, I notice a lot of locals bring their kids here regularly, because they can trust the menu and they know that they can feed their kids this, because it’s as good if not better than what they can feed them at home. There’s a lot of people in town who don’t have a full kitchen, and this is their kitchen.” What is the best part of being a business in Port Townsend? “I can only speak for myself, but it’s the best job I’ve ever had. It’s gratifying just being part of this town. It’s a very unique place as we all know. And you’re passionate about it in ways you wouldn’t be if you were working in F F ER S O N JE a major city or a corporation.” IN S U LA .

Anna Maria Gardner stands near her car, which doubles as her office for Pet Synergy. Most of her business is composed of house calls to local residents, and focuses on treating animals through alternative medications. Photo by John Boone

Pet Synergy takes a holistic approach to animal care About Pet Synergy: “I take a holistic approach; that is, I work at treating the whole animal. I do this through a variety of alternative medicines, like acupuncture and herbs. I first used holistic care on my own dog. My dog was really sick, and not getting any better with conventional treatments. So I adopted the use of herbs and other natural remedies, and she got better.” How do you engage with the local community, both professionally and personally? “I write a regular column for the Port Townsend Food Co-op, focusing on the benefits of holistic care. My daughter attends Chimacum High School, so I’m an involved parent through our school. I also take a local approach to my medicine. I prefer house calls. It’s helpful to see animals in their natural environment. Animals are much more comfortable and relaxed in their homes.” What do you enjoy about the community? “This is a very holistic community; people are very openminded about alternative methods of care. Local residents are open to doing whatever they can for their animals.” What do you suggest to pet owners in terms of offering the best care to their animals? “I tell people to feed their animals a natural diet, along with some common supplements, like fish oil. Also, it’s good to know that lots of common ailments can be treated at home. I also suggest that people hold off on heavy medications unless they are really needed. In general, animals are overmedicated; keep treatments to a minimum and use heavy F F ER S O JE medications as a last resort only.” I N S U LA .

Come see our great new space in the UnderTown! Located at 211 Taylor Street, Suite B5, UnderTown Port Townsend.

The Car Wash is open seven days a week and we schedule details on weekends. We are an authorized dealer for Griot’s and Weathertech products. Jordini’s

has been locally owned since it opened in 1995 and has been voted “best sandwich” for 13 years in a row. Jordini’s has a new menu which includes pannini sandwiches, fresh soups, appetizers, delicious salads, desserts and a kids’ menu. We serve beer & wine and have Happy Hour daily. Our emphasis is on delicious food, friendly service and a fun family environment. Our fabulous waterfront location with deck seating makes Jordini’s a favorite “local” stop. Come find us at 929 Water St., in the back through the glass doors, in the Kellogg Building. Handicapped and stroller accessible.

Personal service, a deep knowledge of pets and products and a commitment to top-quality, healthy food for all animals has helped Pet Town grow even as mega-pet-stores were built nearby. Able to buy in bulk, due to their stores in other towns, the savings are passed on to the customer, and quality is kept up. That’s especially important when it comes to pet food, which has gone through a quality revolution. “When we started there were three brands of food,” said Randy Maag, owner. “Now there are 30 brands, including grain-free food, and lamb from New Zealand.” Pet Town carries it all, and a great staff of 17 is constantly trained to give guidance on good diet and its impact on pet health. Get your aquarium supplies and fish, right here also, as well as wild-bird feed, frozen dog bones and of course, toys.
