Strange by the glassful By nina Law & mark Burr Strange Brewfest founders, consultants Nine years ago, the idea of hosting a beer festival that encouraged skilled, regional craft breweries to modify proven recipes by adding atypical adjuncts to their tasty suds bordered on blasphemy. At that time, if a patron walked into their local brewery, they might find a spiced winter warmer or a pumpkin ale, but they would certainly only find these incarnations during the holiday season. As soon as the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, the brewmaster would get back to brewing “honest” beers – beers that abide by the legendary German purity laws. This beer law states that no beer worth its wort should be brewed with anything other than malted barley, hops, yeast and water. So it’s not surprising that at the first Strange Brewfest,

in January 2005, a modest 11 breweries showed up to show off. The inherently whimsical and mildly controversial festival garnered some “water cooler” talk in the circle of beer geeks (an affectionate term). They talked about what a party it was. They talked

about the incredible music. They talked about costumed patrons reveling in their beerdrinking alter egos. But mostly they talked about how good the beer was. Who knew coconut, cucumber, arbol chiles, woodruff, jasmine,

peanut butter and other nontraditional ingredients could be such fantastic additions to beer? In 2005, only about 400. That’s how many showed up for a taste. Fast-forward to Jan. 2527, 2013. The ninth Strange Brewfest will be hosted for the third time by the American Legion Marvin G. Shields Post 26 in downtown Port Townsend. The festival will feature upwards of 35 craft breweries and cideries, all with a common vision – “to get strange.” And the party that was once a backyard ballyhoo has officially turned into an anticipated celebration of the creativity of our regional craft breweries. It is safe to say that, however modest its beginnings, the festival on the tip of the Quimper Peninsula has helped alter the landscape of brewing, and brewing beliefs, in no small way. It’s going to be very strange.

New breweries open in west sound Craft brewers turn passion into profit Sound for the win

By Terrence Knight Contributor In wine there is wisdom, or so the saying goes, but in beer there is bliss. Benjamin Franklin, that great champion of equality, was reported to have said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” There is no better place for craft brewers to establish themselves in the worldwide culture of beer than the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas, an area known for locally grown, locally produced, nationally sold products.

STOP

Happiness is a sentiment felt strongly at Poulsbobased Sound Brewery after earning high praise for its brews in 2012, including two gold medals at the U.S. Open Beer Championships, a silver medal at the World Beer Cup, and two silver medals and two bronze medals at the North American Brewers Association’s annual North American Beer Awards. “We like to take traditional beers unrepresented in the Northwest and give them our own twist,” says brewery co-owner Mark Hood. Founded by the

Der Blokken Brewery general manager Missy Holyoak and brewmistress Amanda Hanson hoist a pint. Photos by Terrence Knight ambitious quintet of Hood, John Cockburn, Alan Moum, Steve Mattson and “head brewer” Brad Ginn, Sound Brewery is now churning out 15 specialty ales and expanding its distribution list from its crowded tasting room to as far away as Japan.

Let’s face it – there’s something particularly satisfying about the people of the Rising Sun drinking beer cooked up by the people of Puget Sound. It’s like exporting fellowship and equality to the other side of the world.

Amanda Hanson, who signed on as a server when the cozy Bremerton microbrewery overlooking the Port Washington Narrows opened in 2010, has been brewing beer in her kitchen for over a decade. “I’m interested in fermenting everything,” Hanson says. Apparently she means it, having whipped up concoctions including everything from rose blossoms to a variety of fruits. Lately she’s been working on a Mexican chocolate beer. One of only a handful of female commercial brewers in the Pacific Northwest, Hanson does not object to being called “brewmistress.” “That has a ring to it,” she says. Hanson says she appreciates the camaraderie of Olympic Peninsula brewers. “It’s a cool brewing community,” she says, adding that, despite the popular notion that brewing

There’s something particularly satisfying about the people of the Rising Sun drinking beer cooked up by the people of Puget Sound. is a man’s occupation, no one seems to care one whit about her gender. “Brewers around here help each other out.”

A graduate of Sound Brewery’s schooling, Mike Montoney put in half a year of yeoman duty at his alma mater. “Sound invited me to come work with them to learn more about brewing and production,” Montoney says. In 2012, Montoney branched out and launched Rainy Daze Brewing with

wife Denette Pigott and partner Mike Painter. In February 2012, he converted his garage in his semi-rural Silverdale neighborhood and opened what he calls a “nano” brewery, complete with a 45-gallon brewing system, sophisticated refrigeration hardware and a tasting room. “Beer is really about fun,” he says. While production is limited at the fledgling brewery, Montoney has dreams. “My plan is to stay small for the moment and concentrate on quality.”

After winning a homebrew competition in Port Angeles last spring, Mic Sager and wife Kelly Raymond were encouraged to open Dungeness Brewing Co. in Sequim. The couple also consider themselves a “nano,” but unlike Der Blokken, which boasts a pub, and Rainy Daze with its tasting room, Dungeness Brewing is focused on selling tap beers to a few area establishments. “We’re hobbyists,” Sager says. For Dungeness Brewing, Strange Brewfest represents a unique opportunity to let loose, and Sager says he never misses the event. This year he plans to enter a specialty brew reflecting the renowned shoreline where he lives – a “crab stout” flavored with the ultimate crustacean sacrifice, an actual live crab.

How to survive the Strange Brewpocalypse Looking for a little companionship after the end of days? Try a few of these lines on that handsome guy or lovely lady. Tear off these tabs and add your phone number to make a lasting impression (or at least one that they’ll find in their pocket at the laundromat). At the very least you’ll get a free beer – hopefully not in your face! Might I recommend something full-bodied? # You look good in amber, and it looks good in you. # Last call for my number. # I’ve got something brewing in my heart/pants. # How about a hot one to go with that cold one? # I hop you’ll call me. #

I-P-A lot when I drink … #

I’m not as drunk as I look! #

I know we barley know each other, but let’s make out. #

I see you like it stout. #

So you like blondes? #

Get a free growler when you take me home! #

I’m a flighter, not a fighter. #

What will they say when wheat ale everyone we’re together? #

Let’s go for the Gold. #

I can see that distill the place to see hotties. #

2013 Strange Brew

By Carla patton, megan Claflin of the Leader You’ve survived the Mayan apocalypse, but now comes the real test. Can you successfully indulge in all the splendor of Strange Brewfest without ending up as a YouTube sensation (“Look what I can do!”) or a “Best of All Time” Texts from Last Night pick? And, most importantly, can you stay in the good graces of the Strange Brew gods? Well, friend, have no fear! Read these helpful hints for achieving pre- and post-festival victory.

rule #1: remain agile

Stores of palate-pleasing libations await the worthy here in post-apocalypse Port Townsend, but it’s a dog-eat-dog world, so remember to stay on your toes. And what better way to ready you for the throngs of new Mecca than a little practice? Gather some friends and get yourself a standard 16-ounce pint glass. Fill it to the brim! Then arrange the group into two parallel lines and attempt to run the gauntlet of mom’s throw pillows, Mardi Gras beads and a few sharp elbows, because, as sure as the chacha slide at your cousin’s wedding, your friends will try to knock, bump, jostle, crowd and manhandle that beverage out of your hands. Your mission (and we know you’re going to accept it) is to protect that brew. For the advanced course, add an assortment of chairs and other furniture oddities to the course (bob ’n’ weave, buddy, bob ’n’ weave) and end with a round trip on the nearest staircase. Cross the finish line with pint in hand, and to the victor go the spoils!

rule #2: chooSe Your chariot

With a little planning, traversing the local landscape can be fun and entertaining. • Don’t hate, designate:

photo by michael Foley other Box photography Parking downtown is limited and so is your ability to operate a vehicle after consuming, so grab that cluster of bendy straws from the kitchen drawer and pony up. Being the designated driver equals good karma! • Pay the man: Cheaper (and likely more appealing) than a courtesy ride from those no-nonsense road warriors the Port Townsend police, local cab drivers are ready and willing to escort you home. Consider pinning an extra $20 and a Post-it with your address to the inside of your jacket. • Find your buddy: A small hamlet, Port Townsend’s streets are easily traveled on foot, so plan your route and don your most comfortable kicks. But don’t forget to use the “buddy system” to help ensure that all members of your party return. No brew-goers left behind! • Kickin’ it old school: Whether it’s on a comfy transit bus, your faithful bicycle or the neighbor’s alpaca (careful, they spit), grab a seat and mosey on down to Brewtown.

rule #3: Your BodY’S a temPle

No need to mince words here – hangovers suck! Do yourself a favor and treat your body to a filling meal before setting out for the festival. To create a solid foundation try a burger from the Silverwater Café

(237 Taylor) or a plate of homemade pasta from the Brickhouse Bistro (232 Taylor). If you’re in the mood for seafood, the Public House (1038 Water) can satisfy – be sure to try the house croquettes. On Saturday and Sunday, clear that morning fog with coffee and a hot bagel breakfast sandwich at Metro Bagels (1980 W. Sims Way) or the breakfast special at Don’s Soda Fountain (1151 Water).

rule #4: talk that talk

Oh, inhibitions, those fickle buffers of human interaction. Do yourself a favor: If you are planning on indulging (and believe me, with this brewer lineup you are going to want to), leave that cell phone out of reach. Acceptable forms of communication include: Code words, hand signals,

flags and/or synchronized dance moves. Decide on a few with friends beforehand for those moments when you “goose” (need a wingman), “little teapot” (have to pee), “snookie” (need to shake that high-level clinger) or “fever” (have the urge to bust a move). Non-acceptable forms of communication: Do not drink and use social media, text, yell in strangers’ faces and/or yell out the window of a car at pedestrians. Nor should you jump on stage and grab the microphone.

rule #5: when in rome

Remember, we’ve all come for the same thing – to enjoy regional craft brews and the company of good friends (new and old). So, keep your wits about you and show courtesy. These are the rules of Brewpocalypse. Good luck!
