PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

INDEX OF ADVERTISERS

Alliance Material Handling, Inc..........................21 www.alliancemat.com

The MTC is for EVERYONE! W

hen I took a seat at my first Board of Directors Meeting for the Maryland Turfgrass Council, I looked around a table filled with other turfgrass professionals and people who really cared about what they were doing. Like the others in the room, I loved working on golf courses and managing turfgrass, but I really didn’t understand fully what the Maryland Turfgrass Council (MTC) did. All I knew about the MTC was that they hosted an annual educational conference, had a quarterly magazine, and they supported turfgrass research. If this was all that I knew as a board member, then I could only image what other turfgrass professionals thought of or knew about the MTC. The Maryland Turfgrass Council is comprised of and supports everyone in the turfgrass industry in Maryland! You don’t have to own a business or be the highestranking manager at your company to be a member. The current MTC Board of Directors consists of turfgrass professionals including Golf Course Superintendents, Landscape Managers, Sport Turf Professionals, Sales Representatives and Managers, Business Owners, and Sod Farmers that are all working collaboratively to provide support to you, the turfgrass professionals in Maryland. The MTC sponsors educational events for turfgrass and agriculture, assists in providing funding for turfgrass research at the UMD Paint Branch Turf Research Farm, support for legislation, pesticide and professional re-certification classes, and hosts the annual Maryland Turfgrass Conference, just to name some of our functions. Over the next few months we will be trying to communicate better with our members and supporters. If you see something wrong or you feel we should be aware of something, please let us know. Communication and transparency are some of the key ingredients I am trying to implement as we all move forward into 2020. Thank you to all our attendees and sponsors of the 2019 Maryland Turf Conference. We had an amazing attendee turnout with some top-notch education. I am happy to serve as the new Maryland Turfgrass Council President. Working with our Vice President Brandon Sands, Executive Director Vernon Cooper, and the entire MTC Board, we are diligently working to support you, our turfgrass professionals in Maryland and are all looking forward to 2020.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S CORNER

Maryland Turfgrass Conference:

GETTING BETTER EVERY YEAR WOW!!

Anyone who missed the “2019 Annual Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show” at Turf Valley on Dec. 10, 2019, missed a great opportunity to update on the latest information from some of the greatest experts in our industry from several of the better Turfgrass Universities across the USA such as Dr. Travis Gannon, NC State; Dr. Jim Brosnan, Univ. of Tenn.; Dr. John Kaminski, Penn State; and Dr. Joe Roberts, Clemson Univ. We also were well covered by the exceptional Maryland experts who are directly aware of our unique Maryland issues. Just a few of Maryland’s experts included Mr. Joe, Dougherty; Mr. Geoffrey Rinehart; Dr. Mark Carroll; Dr. Karen Rane; and great industry experts like Mr. Elliott Downing. We also cannot forget the efforts of the crew from Turf Equipment and Supply for presenting an outstanding program for our Mechanics. Lastly, a very special thanks to Dr. Joe Roberts who managed to compile this excellent program while accepting a new job and moving his family to Clemson. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, December 8th, 2020 for our next Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show at Turf Valley Resort, you won’t want to miss it!! We took your suggestions from the evaluations after the 2018 conference and implemented them for you. This included: enting larger Educational Rooms so more table space R was available. e separated the “registration area” from the “Coffee W & Sweets” area to move registration quicker and still provide space for socializing and networking. ou wanted more Trade Show/Lunch time but wanted the Y conference to remain one day. We added an additional 30 minutes to the Trade Show time. This resulted in our Vendors increasing from 26 inside vendors and 2 outside in 2018 to 32 inside and 2 outside.

8

MTC TURF NEWS

ne complaint we had in 2018, which was actually done O intentionally, was that there were insufficient dining tables in the Trade Show hall for all to sit and eat at one time. As stated, this is intentional so that some visit the Vendors while some eat and then they switch. As we continue to get larger, we will have to look at adding more dining tables in other areas. lmost unanimously, the responses were to keep A the conference to a 1 day conference and trade show. However, credit for more certifications were requested and that was expanded this year. e, at your request, also expanded the recertification W and continuing education credits this year. We had the following recertifications: MD Pesticide............................................................... 156 MD Fertilizer.............................................................. 123 DE Pesticide.................................................................. 10 DC Pesticide.................................................................. 17 NJ Pesticide..................................................................... 1 PA Pesticide.................................................................... 2 VA Pesticide.................................................................... 9 WV Pesticide................................................................... 3 for a total of 321 recertifications. In addition, we were able to offer GCSAA & STMA CEUs. If you would like to have something else offered or changed for the 2020 conference or anything you would like to see your MTC offer, please take a moment and send me an e-mail or note.

MTC TURF NEWS

2019 Maryland Turfgrass Conference, held on December 10th at Turf Valley Resort and Conference Center was a huge success. About 415 attendees spent the day in educational seminars with tracks focused on Lawn and Landscape Turf Management, Sports Turf Management, Golf Turf Management, and Turf Equipment Management. After 3 years of combining with Virginia for the Mid-Atlantic Turfgrass Expo, this was the second year of the reinvigorated 1-day MTC conference held at Turf Valley Resort.

COVER STORY • continued

A January conference is often subject to unpredictable winter weather and is in close proximity to other national conferences, but holding the conference in early December is early enough to avoid most winter storms and not conflict with the national sports turf managers and golf industry shows after the new year. The Turf Valley location provides a venue that is appropriately sized to accommodate several hundred attendees and is conveniently located for those attending from the I-95 and I-70 corridors, while offering reasonably priced lodging for those travelling from farther away. As usual, it is the enthusiasm of the attendees, the quality of the speakers, and the generous support of the vendors who contribute to the success of the conference. Special thanks goes to Dr. Joseph Roberts for organizing the speaker program and returning to Maryland to speak and help organize after moving to Clemson University this summer and to retired Dr. Kevin Mathias for returning from Virginia to present about controlling insects in turf and landscapes. The program also featured several researchers from other states. This year the MTC was happy to welcome Dr. John Kaminski from Penn State, Dr. Jim Brosnan from the University of Tennessee, and Dr. Travis Gannon of North Carolina State University. Presentation topics covered a broad range of subjects important to turfgrass managers ranging from communication tips

and practices for turf managers (Dr. Kaminski) to research related to pesticide residue duration (Dr. Gannon), and optimizing weed management programs (Dr. Brosnan). Additional highlights included the 2019 Year in Review presented by the USGA’s Elliott Dowling, an update on the developing best management practices for sports turf managers by Dr. Roberts, and the latest in disease bio-control research at the University of Maryland by graduate student Joe Doherty. Mid-day at the show provided ample time for a brief Maryland Turfgrass Council annual meeting, lunch on the trade show floor, and the opportunity for participants to engage in face-to-face conversations with vendors from all segments of the turfgrass industry during the tradeshow. With a wide variety of speakers and a separate track for mechanics focused on equipment maintenance, the conference provided a great respite after a busy season. Turfgrass managers from around the state and all facets of the industry were able to attend informative educational seminars, visit with colleagues, learn about the latest techniques and products, and earn re-certification credits. Be sure to watch for dates and locations of Maryland Turfgrass Council-sponsored re-certification events through the year and mark your calendars for December 8, 2020 for this year’s Maryland Turfgrass Conference! •

BUSINESS / LEADERSHIP

3 LEADERSHIP STYLES

for Leaders Who Want to Grow More Leaders at their Organization By Jeff McManus

“Leadership is practiced not so much in words as in attitude and actions” — Harold S. Geenen

If

you’re looking to grow a leadership culture at your organization, three leadership styles can help you achieve your goal. Think about a time in your life when you really were impacted by an effective leader—someone who cultivated success, effort, and productivity. What qualities did this leader possess? It’s safe to say the leader you are thinking about was more than a figurehead. He or she was more likely to be someone who took interest in you and your work. The leader most people think about is someone who knows the job because he or she has done it themselves. They not only know the trade, but also know you along with all of the other employees in the company. They have a sincere vested interest in you, care about what you need to do your job, and build upon your strengths. It is easy to lead from high above your employees, always having the last say, pointing out flaws in production constructively, or assigning tasks you would never do yourself. This not only lowers morale but also lowers productivity and success. What does it take to be a good leader? What are the qualities of effective leadership and team building? There are many types of good leaders and styles a leader can practice to make a meaningful impact. Here are three leadership styles that are especially helpful for a leader who isn’t looking to only grow a strong group of team members, but to grow a strong group of other leaders at their organization. These three leadership styles are motivating and lead to great change for the better. They are a stark contrast from the autocratic leaders of the past who rule by the “because I said so” philosophy. When practiced regularly, these three styles help build other leaders to help push your company to new heights.

Transformational Leaders Have you ever had a leader who truly inspired you to be the best you could possibly be? This person really built you up and helped you to use your talents to succeed. If so, you might have been working with a transformational leader. Transformational leaders are often morale-boosting and inspirational. They work with employees to create a common goal that is close to the heart of the company. They

16

MTC TURF NEWS

have great communication skills, which help to establish core values everyone can take to heart. They work hard at establishing these core values and not only communicating them to the company but also living these values. In other words, they get their hands dirty. When a leader works alongside their employees, the leader sends the message that the core values are very important. Values are constantly instilled through positive reinforcement and building self-esteem. They truly get to know the people who are working in the company and treat them with respect, often asking questions of their employees to assess what the company and the employees want and need to attain success. They also look to everyone to think about what could be done differently. Transformational leaders provide relevant and interesting training. These trainings are often either done by in-house experts who inspire other employees every day or are hands-on and innovative transformational leaders. Finally, transformational leaders are visionaries constantly working toward building a base of strong employees to help reach the next great success. Together, these qualities make transformational leaders especially good at building other leaders.

Coaches Think back to your childhood. Many of the times you accomplished something you never thought possible, it was under the leadership of a great coach. Coaches are not only accessible to the team, but they are a member of the team. They celebrate successes and learn from mistakes. Coaches do this through observation and interactions. They ask questions and show interest to develop a relationship with each team member to build autonomy of players by finding the strengths and providing scaffolding for each person to reach the next level. Gradually, this method helps every member reach his or her highest potential. The key to this is valuing each person’s individual role in the team’s success. Coaches foster success through team building. They develop plans to train, motivate, and build morale in an adaptive way. Developing each person’s strengths and helping to build them instills great feelings of responsibility and accountability. Coaching will help move toward future

goals and gradually build toward them never losing sight of them. Coaches provide the learning and support needed to naturally grow leaders from within.

Democratic leaders create an environment in which employees are comfortable taking educated leaps in the direction of becoming great leaders.

Democratic Leaders

Which of these leadership styles do you see most in yourself?

In a democracy, everyone takes an active role in decisionmaking. A democratic leader is an expert in successfully developing ways in which all members take an active role in the direction of a company’s success. These leaders give everyone an opportunity to be heard in a productive way. Democratic leaders value, acknowledge, and honor the views of their employees. They delegate responsibilities according to strengths and interest. These leaders open up communication throughout the company. Open lines of communication allow people to feel like they are heard and like they matter. Open communication helps to build creativity and success. Democratic leaders set the stage for company core values but allow for other members to have a say as well. This helps employees to develop a vested interest in the success of the company. A democratic leader listens to what employees are saying. They offer trainings and support based on their team’s specific needs.

One important takeaway is there are many ways to effectively lead. Transformational leaders, coaches, and democratic leaders each have unique qualities, but all help build other leaders within an organization. • Jeff holds a Bachelor of Science in Landscape and Ornamental Horticulture from Auburn University and is a PGMS Certified Grounds manager, and Certified Arborist. Give water a break tiftuf bermudagrass is the new drought-tolerance superstar. The newest edition in the “Tif” (Tifton) series of bermudagrasses to originate from the renowned University of Georgia turfgrass breeding program, TifTuf promises to be a true game-changer in stellar yet environmentally friendly performance. Providing unbeatable drought tolerance, it uses 38% less water than Tifway 419, and it is significantly more drought resistant than all other bermudagrasses. In addition to its incredible drought tolerance, TifTuf is more aggressive than Tifway and provides superior wear and traffic tolerance (even better than Celebration), excellent cold tolerance (equal to Latitude 36 at Kansas State University), fast spring green-up and excellent fall color retention. In the 2015 NTEP trials, TifTuf was the highest-ranked cultivar in North Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi, and across all 17 locations overall, it was the highest-ranked, commercially available cultivar. TifTuf will not only pay for itself in water savings, but more importantly, it will create more-sustainable athletic fields for the future. In fact, it will soon become the ultimate must-have grass for sports turf managers who want to take a break from water use.
