Hello & Welcome!

Swahili

French

On behalf of LEAF Community Arts, it is our pleasure to welcome you home to the 2018 Fall LEAF Festival! If you are new to LEAF, you are in for a cultural treat. The organization believes in authentic exchange of music and art that creates pathways to better understanding culture and how we connect to others. We invite returning LEAFers to reunite with the LEAF culture you love, and encourage you to share a tradition or cherished "festival secret" with someone new! The Festival brings home all of LEAF’s work and opens up the opportunity for celebration & connection. It is the time & space to reunite with our best selves, relax, recharge and engage. We couldn’t do this incredible work without the support of LEAF Members and Sponsors. BIG LEAF LOVE & GRATITUDE to the many hearts and hands fueling LEAF’s work year-round in our local community and across the globe. LEAF Board members want to meet YOU! Visit us at cultural arts showcases, the Global Outpost, or speaking on stage in support of LEAF’s mission. If you see us, stop & chat! LEAF Festival is about finding connections that last a lifetime. Welcome Home! Thank You! Derek Allen, Board President • Deborah Bryant, Board Chair Jennifer Pickering, Executive Director

LEAF’S ANNUAL IMPACT

OUR MISSION LEAF is a non-profit connecting cultures & creating community through music & arts – locally & globally – with festivals, community events and cultural arts education programs. theLEAF.org

Activating cultural arts to create life-affirming, community building experiences - empowering our youth to become global citizens, leaders & agents of positive change.

“[My child is more] confident, more ready to explore, more creative and willing to try new things – like breakdance!” –LEAF Arts & Parks Summer Camp Parent YOUTH BECOME STARS IN THEIR HOMETOWN! For two weeks every summer, The Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Center in the heart of Asheville is transformed into the magic of LEAF for 120 rising 1st through 5th graders at the LEAF Arts & Parks Summer Camp, a joint partnership with Asheville Parks & Recreation. The walls become adorned with expressive pieces of youth art crafted during Easel Rider visual arts lessons, the floors vibrate from the rhythmic beating of djembes in authentic African drumming workshops, the halls echo with sounds from around the world through the LEAF Instrument Petting Zoo and LEAF International cultural immersions. The air is electrifying and youth shine at a final showcase on stage for their families and community. As one parent exclaimed about their child’s confidence, “Her excitement to perform was like nothing we have seen so far… no shyness!” From music and arts residencies to hula hooping, circus arts, theater set design and even Spanish immersion, the camp exposes children to their inner artist, exploring the far limits of their creativity and honing their individuality. "Thank you so much for all the fun activities! I really enjoyed it. My favorite part was EVERYTHING!!!” – Julian, longtime LEAF Arts & Parks Camper

300+ YOUTH PERFORMING THIS WEEKEND!

Look for this symbol on the Performance Schedule!

WELCOME FALL VISITING TEACHING ARTISTS!

Twice a year, LEAF invites performing artists from around the globe that are culturally-rooted enough to grace the Festival stage, and mission-oriented enough to lead a Visiting Teaching Artist residency with elementary, middle, and/or high school students in and around Buncombe County. It is an opportunity for youth to take the next step toward becoming global citizens and leaders - onstage and off-stage in their communities.

Empowering Culture Keepers, Cultivating Global Youth and Collaborating to Preserve Cultural Traditions in 10 Countries: Bequia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Mexico, New Orleans, Panama, Rwanda & Tanzania.

LLEVÁNDOLO A CASA CON LEAF INTERNATIONAL COSTA RICA & MEXICO Imagine never leaving your community or the city you live in due to factors out of your control... That's the situation for many of our global friends in Costa Rica & Mexico. Their passion & dedication to culture will not let them sit silent. With great anticipation and intentions of preservation, LEAF International Costa Rica & Mexico will bring to the festival a dynamic presence for AVL area youth. See Costa Rica empowering the Bribri, Ngabe, & Cabecar First Nations to connect to their heritage through their traditional art forms while expressing a variety of stories, actions, & healing techniques. Understand how Mexico is committing to teaching 21st century skills and Mayan traditions through integrating the Mayan language into many of their activities. Watch them perform their ancestral music as they play traditional Mayan instruments that include: Cabeza de Cochino, Xtoles, Noche de Ocarinas, El Tunkul, La Cigarra, and Los Mapuches. This residency & performance will provide awareness to the Asheville community on the importance of revitalizing the cultural traditions of the world.

We are connecting people from far away distances, but we are also connecting human beings in time.

– Luis Porras Mora, LEAF International Costa Rica Coordinator & Founder of Proyecto Jirondai

GO GLOBAL with LEAF International Cultural Expeditions

I have traveled with my daughters on cultural expeditions to Costa Rica & Guatemala. What they have learned and the questions they continue to ask is the true fascination. Culture, creativity and connection are still lingering. 

Merci

LEAF International is partnering with True Nature Travels on this cultural discovery expedition to Peru. This is an opportunity for LEAFers to explore culture while traveling through Peru with a LEAF International Culture Keeper.

THANKS FOR BRINGING IT HOME TO LEAF! “What does HOME mean to you? Is it in the streets, fields, and forests where you grew up? Does it rest in the warm embrace of a loved one? Of all the places we plant our roots, few things bring us HOME in our hearts like music. The strum of a guitar, the beat of a drum, the echoing chorus of a favorite song… Music holds a way of guiding us to a place of inner peace, joy and sanctuary. This Fall we'll take LEAF's community legacy one step further welcoming artists from nations who find their homes in great peril, yet despite all odds continue to share their music, message and medicine with us all. Join us this FALL where three generations of families hailing from the four corners of the Globe will gather to celebrate the power music & arts has to Bring Us Home together as ONE Family." ~ Ehren Cruz, LEAF Performing Arts Director

HonorIng Our GrIef

& CelebratIng Those we MIss "At LEAF, I Became." ~ Chris Orr Welcome All. Share memories, blessings, and join us in painting the “Wonka Effigy” in celebration of the life & loving memory of our Sacred Fire Keeper Chris Orr at the Community Fire & Drum Circle.

Have you lost someone close to your heart & soul? I have too. LEAF is one of those beautiful places where I feel them close to me. Pick up your luminary at the Boathouse, and decorate it or write a poem. On Friday 7:30pm, we will meet at the Boathouse to release our luminaries in honor of Loved Ones passed, and watch them illumine the healing waters of Lake Eden. ~Lindsay M.

HANDCRAFTS & HEALING ARTS BOOTHS "When you buy something from an artist, you're buying more than an object. You’re buying hundreds of hours of errors and experimentation. You’re buying years of frustration and moments of pure joy. You’re not buying just one thing; you are buying a piece of a heart, a piece of a soul… a piece of someone else’s life. Most importantly, you’re buying the artist more time to do something they are passionate about." ~ Rebekah Joy Plett, Artist
