On Behalf of LEAF Community Arts, Hello & Welcome!
Born out of a creative opportunity, LEAF’s 1st festival was October 1995! Gratitude to everyone who has been a part of LEAF since day 1. The mission and beautiful connections continue to grow and weave us together in this precious life. This weekend we invite you to enjoy experiences rooted in world traditions, as well as time to revive your own LEAF traditions, reconnect with old friends, meet new friends, and kick back and relax in the majestic outdoors. Whether you are a longtime LEAFer or a new friend, we welcome YOU. Have a fabulous LEAF!
Due to the generosity of our LEAF Members, LEAF continually evolves to build pathways of understanding in our world ready for more harmonious connections. It is a gift to bring together this amazing variety of staff, volunteers, artists, healers, and teachers to share their talents and traditions with you. To see these pathways in action with the next generation, be sure to check out our LEAF Schools & Streets and LEAF International showcases, and watch enriching cultural exchanges spring to life! Keep an eye out for LEAF Global coming to downtown Asheville this winter where you can experience world cultures through rich technology and workshops, and enjoy LEAF experiences and connections year-round! Psssst...LEAF Members- look for your special invitations for LEAF Global soft & grand openings! As we celebrate, our gratitude goes to each of you for co-creating this small but mighty organization. LEAF has given us so many gifts with YOU being on the top of the list. As you walk around, smile and share hellos and appreciation for these magical moments. We always welcome your LEAF Love stories of music, arts, and local & global connections especially as the 25th year/50th festival is coming up in 2020! With LEAF Love & Gratitude, Derek Allen, Board President Deborah Bryant, Board Chair Jennifer Pickering, Founder & Executive Director

Listenng to him process and be brave about being on stage was awesome to see. - Estes Elementary Parent
”
LEAF’s Visiting Teaching Artist residencies push youth out of their comfort zones and into their creative selves! LEAF is honored to collaborate with incredibly passionate and dedicated educators and community leaders to bring world-renowned performing artists to youth all across Buncombe County for unique cultural immersions - from residencies and workshops to main stage performances at LEAF Festival! The experience empowers and uplifts from start to finish and the evolution of a single child is electrifying and contagious. One Estes Elementary parent reminisced about watching her child’s transformation through participating in a 3-day residency with Folk Musician, Jarlath Henderson. "He was VERY nervous from sign-up until the day of the performance,” she shares. “But he REALLY wanted to do it. Listening to him process and be
brave about being on stage was awesome to see. He had to open himself up to trust and ‘say yes’ to the experience, even with unknowns. So this experience really gave him a chance to stretch and grow through his fears and anxieties.” Parents consistently reflect on changes in their child as a result of participating in a LEAF cultural arts experience commenting on how children “felt important,” leave “smiling and holding [their] head high,” develop “new skills and comfort in [their own] body” and perform with “pride and confidence.” “He's so glad he did it! And as his parent, I'm so glad for this opportunity for growth” racaps the Estes parent. And to LEAF staff, “Keep going! this was such a rewarding experience for our family and school!"
Welcome! FALL VISITING TEACHING ARTISTS!
Twice a year, LEAF invites talented performing artists from around the globe that are deeply culturally-rooted, mission-oriented and also incredible teachers to lead a 3-5 day Visiting Teaching Artist Residency with students in and around Buncombe County. photos left to right • The Change • Darrell Rose • Jonathan Scales Fourcestra • LEAF International Costa Rica • • • •

Costa Rica Cultural Expedition March 2020!
Know the Journey:
FIRST NATION CULTURE KEEPERS ALEXIS RODRIGUEZ & LUIS SALAZAR Supported by
LEAF Alexis Rodriguez learned music and MemberSHIP Ngäbe-Buglé traditions from his mother who lived near the frontier. While he speaks Spanish, he thinks in Ngäbe-Buglé. For more than 20 years, Alexis has served as a culture keeper in the comarca teaching thousands of youth traditional Ngäbe-Buglé music, rhythms, chants, and the language itself.
Cabécar culture keeper, Luis Salazar is a teacher, healer, medicine-man, agriculturist, musician, & community leader. Luis teaches kids in his community, high on the Chirripó Mountain – which is a 22-mile hike for his visitors. Salazar also travels across the country teaching oral traditions & medicine, and ancient chants to the Cabécar kids of Ujarras in the South Pacific. EXPLORAR LA CULTURA DE COSTA RICA LEAF International Cultural Expeditions
(March 1-9, 2020)
This majestic Costa Rican journey will have you spending more time among indigenous communities than on the beach, at waterfalls or in rain forest preserves (though we’ve built those stops in as well). Imagine building meaningful relationships with members among the Ngäbe-Buglé First Nation while witnessing the powerful expressions of culture these communities have to offer. This trip will bring you closer to the community while supporting the preservation efforts of leaders from First Nations throughout the region. Use the information you’ve learned about the Costa Rica program to solve the Expedition puzzle. L: This LEAF International program is located on the Caribbean coast in Amubri E: This First Nation community is located in the south of Costa Rica where the traditions flow over into Panama comarca A: Alexis Rodriguez & Luis Salazar are LEAF International ____________ F: This First Nation community is located high up in the mountains of Chirripó

THANKS FOR REACHING FOR THE STARS WITH LEAF! “Of all the forces in our universe, few things captivate more inspiration, awe and wonder... than the stars. No matter where we stand upon this beautiful Earth, up above is a celestial blanket beckoning our vision to higher possibilities. For the 49th LEAF Festival, the artists selected transcend expectation, defy all convention, and capture the essence of what it means to embrace one's fullest potential. From the shores of Benin, to the mountains of Colorado, to the forests of Ireland, to the city streets of LA... this Fall, over 15 nations will unite at Lake Eden to share a vision of who we are when we release all expectations, dive deep into our creative passions, and Reach for the Stars.” ~ Ehren Cruz, LEAF Artistic Director
