How many young jazz artists get to be with the masters of jazz in Preservation Hall and play their instrument? The second bi‐annual LEAF Delta Jazz Musical Journey to New Orleans (NOLA)* was extraordinary! Most of these students have not had access to jazz music traditions and have not travelled far beyond Asheville. The shared cultural connections to the African American communities in NOLA now have the kids excited to learn more about their history. “You got it girl, take your time, go ahead and play that instrument” –Preservation Hall Musicians encouraging LEAF Delta Jazz band kids *Grassroots Arts Program Subgrant. This grant funds a portion of artist contract fees for the LEAF Delta Jazz Band.

Transforming Youth into ARTISTS! The Circus Comes to Town At Asheville Middle School’s IRL Program, kids gathered in the Toy Boat Community Art Space to learn Circus Arts with LEAF Schools & Streets teaching artist, Nina Ruffini. It was some of these young people’s first introduction to the world of physical comedy and comedy legend Buster Keaton. Their faces lit up as they watched classic examples of slapstick, and they realized that they too could make people laugh! Excitement built as each student realized their own power as a performer. They were ready to get to work creating their own act. See what these young clowns and circus performers have created on Saturday at 12:15 on the Roots Stage. Nina will be bringing both the IRL performers and the Art in the Afternoon performers to the stage for pure Circus madness!

Empowering Global Youth & Collaborating to Preserve Cultural Traditions Where in the world is LEAF International at Work Today? Bequia, The Grenadines | Costa Rica, Bribri & Ngäbe-Buglé First Nations | Guatemala Haiti | Panama | Rwanda | Tanzania (4 programs!)

LEAF International Dreams BIG! LEAF International envisions a world where communities actively engage their youth in learning their cultural traditions, empowering them with the life skills necessary to be active agents of change in their communities, and in our world at large. It is this that serves as our inspiration as we forge relationships with communities around the world to strengthen dynamic cultural preservation programs to cultivate community and connection.

1,250+ Youth Served Globally Since 2006 "LEAF International believes in our traditions. LEAF makes us feel that we are not alone, and our cultures are important.” Alexis Rodriquez, Keeper of the Ngäbe-Buglé Traditions and Ancient Arts

6

LEAF International and Proyecto Jirondai created the first Costa Rica-Panama Ngäbe-Buglé Tribal Reunion. Alexis returned to his homeland for the first time in over 20 years, along with his young students who were transformed by their first visit to their Nation's sacred lands. The LEAF group performed to almost 1,000 in the comarca's capital, and many additional cultural exchanges followed. It is our hope this new connection will engage their young people to learn their endangered Ngäbe-Buglé arts traditions.

“Today was the first time, that the people had seen their music and dance performed in an artist manner or listened to their music outside of an official ceremony.”

- Ariel, Parent & Educator

*The Dan Lucas Memorial Fund supports LEAF International Costa Rica and connected LEAF International programs in Central America.

“Visiting LEAF in El Tejar has given us a new high bar (like in the Olympics) of level of excellence of music. This society of young musicians is amazing. The dedication and friendship is so deep. The excellence of this program raises our goals and hopes.” –Luis, LEAF International Costa Rica Coordinator & Proyecto Jirondai

LEAF International - Guatemala

LEAF International - Arusha & Tanzania LEAF international students in both programs in Arusha, Tanzania are astounding! LI gals at St. Joseph’s Secondary School just won 2nd place for their incredible performance at the First Annual Inter-School Cultural Competition held in Arusha. Over at Ilboru Secondary School, the boys are in the studio every day working on their beat making skills as they dedicate themselves to producing uplifting hip-hop that reflects their life experiences. Thank you to the Gradison Memorial Fund for helping make the Tanzania One Mic Studio a possibility for these youth!

LEAF International Guatemala celebrated its first ever Summer Music Camp. Older students became teachers, allowing for a positive feedback loop of skill creation & empowerment. What a huge success! Guatemala also hosted LEAF International’s first Teaching Artist exchange, where our Costa Rica and Guatemala Teaching Artists connected and shared with one another. Talk about connecting cultures and creating community!

"Your traditions are very important. It's like you forget who you are if you don't know your traditions." - Bois Gris, LEAF International Haiti Teaching Artist 7
