CARGILL ARTBOOK ENGLISH
IMAGINE
FOREWORD 500 years ago, our predecessors were eating the food they farmed. Today, we have tens of millions of restaurants, food products, and supermarkets. While it’s easy to lose ourselves in today’s surplus of choices, the fundamental truth hidden behind these millions of brands remains the same: when you deal in the business of food, you’re responsible for the lives of people. This is a great responsibility, and one that we take very seriously. That’s why, we believe that safety is priceless— even if that means proactively funding the vaccination of not just our own chickens, but of non-Cargill chickens from the farms in our vicinity. We believe that when the entire community is healthy and thriving, everyone wins. That’s why, we don’t demand that employees obey rules— we empower them with a deep understanding of the “why” of animal biosecurity and food safety through extensive training and education. That’s why, we are the trusted partner of the world’s leading multinational brands— we are not just commercial partners, we are allies in creating a world where our children can eat our products with absolute safety and assurance. This book is testimony to imagining a better world, a dream that has lead us since our entry to China. Welcome to Cargill. The Cargill Animal Protein China Team // CAP China

Building the System -
:: Scale / Machinery of the Future / Integration
MASSIVE SCALE Cargill Animal Protein China (CAP China) is one of the largest integrated businesses in China, and the largest poultry processing plant in the world of Cargill. The Chuzhou production site spans 40 facilities, with over 2.2 billion RMB invested to-date into state-of-the-art facilities and cuttingedge technologies.
OPERATING THE ENTIRE SUPPLY CHAIN MEANS SERIOUS EFFICIENCIES CAP China controls the entire protein production supply chain— a frontierbreaking feat. This highly efficient system enables every facility to fully specialize in their area of expertise, each operating as a highly-optimized part of a whole.
IT ALL STARTS WITH TONS OF FEED Just two managers leverage state-ofthe-art technology to oversee a feed production powerhouse that pumps out 32.5 tons of feed per hour. A team of 40 workers works in three shifts to distribute the feed at record rate: no longer than 48 hours after cooling, Cargill trucks deliver fresh feed to 23 surrounding grow-out farms and 12 breeder and pullet farms.
A HIGHLYTRAINED STAFF OF 230 WORKERS MANAGES 12 BREEDER AND PULLET FACILITIES, HOUSING 560,000 SETS OF BREEDER CHICKENS. CAP BREEDER CHICKENS PRODUCE 70 MILLION CHICKS PER YEAR.
MACHINERYOF THE FUTURE
CAP facilities are home to the most advanced protein growth and production technology in the world. As one of Cargill’s key growth markets, CAP China is endowed with top-of-the-line machinery, much of which does not exist anywhere else in China.
Cargill’s Chuzhou site boasts the most efficient hatchery in the world, producing 5 million chicks per week with just 36 setters. The hatchery houses the only Chick Master 7 in the country, enabling an uninterrupted 18.5 day incubation process which leads to higher survival rates and increased strength of hatched chicks.
Every year, 70 million chickens are nourished, monitored, and kept completely biosecure in 23 grow-out farms.
FROM NOTHING TO EVERYTHING In just 18 months, Primary Processing capacity has reached 210,000 chickens per day. With 3 automatic production lines and 1 manual line, CAP processes an astonishing 13,500 chickens per hour. Advanced and modular machinery is responsible for automated size selection of unprocessed chicken, sorting raw protein for a variety of final chicken products with the greatest efficiency and consistency.
HOW WE MAKE NUGGETS The Further Processing plant simultaneously runs its par-cooked and fully cooked production lines, both of which have cooking and grilling capabilities. These lines are fully modular, able to accommodate for a variety of product orders, and produce a total of 30,000 tons of processed chicken annually.

Building the Team -
:: Pride / Learning / Obsession With Details / Global Knowledge / Standards
,
“THOUGH ONE HIGHPRODUCING EMPLOYEE IS GREAT, THAT ALONE WILL NOT RESULT IN A HIGH-PRODUCING FARM.” - ZHANG HONGWEI, GROW-OUT FARM
WE KNOW THAT THE WHOLE IS GREATER THAN THE PARTS
LEVERAGING A GLOBAL KNOWLEDGE NETWORK CAP China’s competitive advantage is derived from Cargill’s massive global support network. Every manager at Chuzhou has access to a global network of information, while Cargill’s presence in 67 markets combined with the ability to leverage expertise from a century and a half of agrictulture business enables CAP to predict industry supply, demand and production two years in advance.
INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS FOR LOCAL EMPLOYEES CAP training programs adhere to international standards and are applied to every China employee. Facility managers localize global training practices to create a system of training specific to their facility, while still maintaining a cohesive global Cargill standard.
Cargill’s 150 year history in the agriculture industry has resulted in an unmatched data and knowledge base that powers the CAP Integrated Planning team to see further than anyone else. Armed with millions of data points spanning half a century of data-collection, the Integrated Planning team consistently projects supply and demand trends 24 months into the future, greatly exceeding the industry average of 3 to 4 months.
PAST EXPERIENCE BRINGS FUTURE ADVANTAGE
,
“FOLLOWING A VISIT TO OUR FACILITY, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS CLAIMED THEY HAD NEVER SEEN SUCH A CLEAN FEED MILL IN THEIR LIVES. THE STANDARDS OF CLEANLINESS AND SAFETY AT OUR MILL FAR EXCEED ANY OTHER COMPANY I HAVE WORKED FOR, AND MY ENTIRE TEAM UNDERSTANDS THE IMPORTANCE BEHIND THIS.” -- ALENTO ZHU, FEED MILL
100+ YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
CAP facilities are lead by a team of highly seasoned industry workers, recruited from both universities and experienced positions in the protein business. Chuzhou’s six facility managers have a combined experience of over 100 years in China’s agricultural industry, breeding deep levels of understanding and respect for Cargill’s high standards of biosecurity and food safety.
,
“MY KEY TO SUCCESS IN RUNNING THE PLANT LIES IN MY ABILITY TO TRUST THE CAPABILITY OF AN EXCELLENT MANAGEMENT TEAM.” - LI GUIFENG, PRIMARY PROCESSING PLANT
CAREFUL SELECTION OF TOP TALENT Almost 20% of CAP’s Chuzhou farm and facility staff hold university degrees, while one-third of staff is recruited from secondary schools and trained through Cargill’s CareerOriented Program. CAP facilities utilize Cargill’s global recruitment programs to implement industryspecific education and on-site managerial training, ensuring strong ownership for Cargill standards of work and product.
SAFEGUARD AGAINST DISEASE, NO MATTER THE COST Since entering Chuzhou, Cargill has taken huge steps as an industry leader to guarantee not just the safety of Cargill chickens, but also of all local chickens grown by small farmers within a 1 kilometer radius of CAP farm facilities. CAP China incurs the full cost of vaccinating these non-Cargill chickens. This investment into safeguarding against disease of all chickens is fundamental to Cargill’s vision for the collaborative effort between governmental, local, and commercial entities towards building a thriving community.
TAKING A PROACTIVE ROLE IN COMBATING DISEASE IN CHUZHOU
Cargill’s local research labs perform random batch-testing on local chickens throughout Chuzhou three times a year in order to identify and proactively develop anti-viruses against any potentially new diseases that might threaten the safety of Cargill farms and the local farming community.
NOT RULES, BUT KNOWLEDGE
Cargill employees are not trained to obey rules, they are educated to understand and act in accordance with Cargill’s fierce dedication to food quality and safety. Mentorships are established throughout the workforce of each facility to enable learning beyond the classroom, and any faulty practices are immediately pointed out and remediated during the work process. It is precisely because employees understand why good practice is critical to good food that safety and biosecurity measures are strictly upheld, always.

Building the Product -
:: Efficiency / Safety / Uncompromising Quality
THERE ARE THREE PILLARS THAT MAKE OR BREAK CAP CHINA’S ABILITY TO DELIVER ON ITS PROMISE OF FRESH, SAFE CHICKEN FOR CHINA:
01. 02. 03.
EFFICIENCY:
CAP China’s investment into every part of the supply chain, from feed to grow-out farms, to both primary and further processing plants, is a part of a very deliberate strategy to being the single industry leader in efficiency.
THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF SAFETY:
Safety comes from both the technology used to ensure Cargill facilities are completely biosecure, and a highly knowledgeable, self-regulating staff to act on all biosecurity precautions. Cargill does not rely on rules to enforce safety; its culture demands it.
UNCOMPROMISING QUALITY:
Cargill’s obsession with the quality of its end product means involvement in every step of production: from use of the perfect feed formula, to above-and-beyond practices towards maximization of chicken health, to recipe design with the best innovation partners. Cargill spares no cost in producing the highest quality of chicken.
SELECTION OF THE FITTEST A combination of batch testing for quality of DNA at Cargill’s Chuzhou Poultry Health Center, and decades long research in the science and technologies of animal husbandry ensures that CAP breeder farms raise and produce only the strongest chickens and eggs.
A SECRET FORMULA FOR FEED Refined through 65 years of global research and development.
PERFECT CUSTOMIZATION Cargill feed formulas are specially customized to the nutritional needs of each batch of chickens, according to minute details such as stage of growth cycles or even DNA preferences based chicken genealogy. This level of attention to detail is needed to maximize nutritional intake during critical growth periods.
“GOOD ENOUGH IS NOT TOLERATED Any ingredient that enters CAP feed mills is rigorously tested against toxins. Ingredients are tested on-site against four main toxins, followed by further testing for ochratoxin and tricothecenes through samples sent to the Cargill Animal Nutrition lab in Langfang, Shandong.
SUPERIOR NUTRITIONAL VALUES An essential component to the perfect feed formula comes from its incorporation of only the highest quality ingredients, screened rigorously for Cargill standards of nutrition value before use. Every feed pellet is created with a blend of over 20 ingredients, to be consumed by Cargill chickens within a week of the feed’s formulation.
ATTENTION TO CARE MEANS BETTER HEALTH Cargill’s comprehensive farm and animal welfare management practices incorporate the proper use of light to ensure the healthy and productive growth of chickens. These practices also lead to better eating habits, and ultimately a healthier bird.
24-hour attentive caretakers and strict biosecurity measures keep CAP chickens happy and healthy, resulting in higher survival rates and reduced use of medicine.
LIVING IN A PERFECTLY ENGINEERED ENVIRONMENT Farm facility entrance, exit and indoor movements are protected by biosecurity protocols at, or exceeding, medical research lab and operating room standards. Chickens are reared in biosecure chicken coops, with a fully-climatized ventilation system that keeps chickens in carefully controlled temperatures through the entirety of their growth cycles.
CARGILL CHICKENS ARE PROCESSED AND PACKAGED IN LESS THAN 3 HOURS. AN INDUSTRY RECORD FOR FRESHNESS.
7°C
SAFETY IS PRICELESS CAP’s Primary Processing facilities maintain a core chicken temperature of 7°C throughout the entire production process. This commitment to safety means longer chilling time per chicken batch and thus increased cost per chicken, but greatly restricts growth of microbes to ensure safety of raw protein. At Cargill, safety is priceless.
FRESH, ALWAYS
Cargill’s custom-built delivery trucks are installed with the latest smarttemperature-control technology to guarantee rapid delivery of the freshest meat to China’s consumers.
LET’S TALK ABOUT INGREDIENTS
CARGILL’S INGREDIENTS PARTNERS Cargill’s relationship with the Kerry Ingredients Center spans decades and continents. This intimate partnership between innovators in protein production and recipe development is the key to CAP’s leadership in the protein industry. With more than 5,000 food scientists and local research offices in 35 countries, Cargill R&D, Kerry Ingredients Center and other partnerships leverage global product knowledge and the latest trends to provide CAP with a nonstop flow of innovative, localized recipes.
TAKING LEADERSHIP IN TIMES OF CRISIS In just one year, Cargill has filled the void for several customers during times of national food crisis. CAP leverages global resources and innovation partners to ramp up production and become the primary supplier for customers facing severe product shortages. Quick action in times of crisis has earned Cargill a reputation for reliability.
WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE GLOBAL FOOD SAFETY STANDARDS Cargill is the only animal protein business in China to uphold not only Chinese food safety standards, but also US FDA food safety requirements. These standards are rigorously applied through the entire supply chain, from feed, to chicken growth, to processing plants.
UNCOMPROMISING ATTENTION TO DETAIL Primary and Further Processing standards are driven by the expectations of Cargill customers for the perfect product, every time. Each piece of raw protein is individually weighed during the primary sorting process, after which random selections are individually measured during their further processing for a certainty of exactitude.
RELIABLE, RAPID, MASSIVESCALE PRODUCTION With already massive production capacity, CAP China is positioned to become the highest volume chicken supplier in the country.
Companies that are in the business of food are responsible for the lives of people.
