ou’ll no doubt bump into your friends at Chadstone and Southland as they make their selections for their families’ wardrobes for Pesach. Laya Phillip, professional seamstress, advises us to keep in mind these few handy hints when shopping for clothes.
Now we have fallen victim to its grip. Only in a much more painful way. Not only has the speed of our internet not increased, but during the installation of the NBN at our premises recently, our old familiar phone number became permanently and irretrievably lost. We have made the decision to replace our former landline with a dedicated mobile number to Yiddishe Gesheften. Please make a note of it 0405 936 822 This explains why you have not been able to get through to us. We do apologise for any inconvenience.
HOW DO I SHOP FOR THE RIGHT FIT? Make sure it fits well at the top (shoulder and arm area) the rest is usually much easier to adjust. It pays to keep the receipt for those non fixables. You may buy a top or dress for a great price but if it is very baggy around the shoulders and or the chest area, it will be very expensive to fix. So is it still worth the ‘’bargain’’? This applies equally to men’s, women’s and children’s clothing.

ow fast time passes. As I write these words, we are holding just before Purim. This means only four weeks till Pesach. Then you turn around and it’s Shavuous, and before you know us, the next major Jewish festival is upon us – the July stocktake sales! Seems like it was just last Pesach. Last Pesach will always have a very special place in my memory. For the first time we spent Pesach away from home. Quite unexpectedly, I received a phone call from a large catering organization, asking me if I was available to supervise the kashrus at a luxury Pesach resort in Hawaii. In a way it wasn’t a such a surprise, as my Kashrus supervision consultancy has really taken off recently. In the past I worked on and off with various kashrus agencies such as the ‘OU’, the ‘Star-K’, the OK4U, etc. My Rebbetzin, convinced me it was time to branch out on my own and thus my own kashrus agency, the ‘U.O. Me’ was established last year. I am proud to say that it has grown into a highly regarded and respected hechsher, (although I personally don’t eat from it myself). So, when they contacted me and asked if I was interested in spending Pesach in Hawaii, I didn’t have to think too hard. Just the thought of not having to clean the house and change the dishes was
8 YIDDISHE GESHEFTEN AUTUMN 2018 PESACH 5778
enough, not to mention the change of surroundings. I was having visions of Seder by the pool under the tropical palm trees with exotic food and sipping on the four cups of wine served in coconut shells with little umbrellas floating in them. My wife, (who is of the firm opinion that Pesach should be like the Olympics – once every 4 years), was ecstatic just at the thought of not having to change the dishes, clean the house or decide which queue to stand in at the Pesach supermarket, (the one with sign for ‘12 items or less’ or the one for ‘750 items or more’), and not having to decide whether we really needed Kosher l’Pesach marshmallows, chocolate coated Shmura matzos, or cinnamon, only to discover that our Pesach cupboard was replete with commercial quantities of these items with ‘use-by’ dates stretching back to last century. So, when they asked me how much I would charge for my services over the Yomtov, my magnanimous reply was, “Oh, I couldn’t take money for all this, after all it’s a mitzvah! Just the airfares and accommodation for myself, my wife, and our sixteen children, that’s all I need”. So let me paint a word picture of what Pesach at the Shangri-La Whaui Hawaii resort was like. When we lift up the Seder plate at the beginning of the service, we utter those immortal words…’Kol dichfin yeso veyechol’, meaning ‘whoever is hungry should come and eat’. And that sums up the theme of our Hawaiian Pesach experience. One massive, obscene,

hen pondering which Podiatry-pearls to propose for the upcoming Pesach (Passover) issue of Yiddishe Gesheften, one theme kept emerging – the journey of our people. Whilst the act of freeing the Bnei Yisrael is central to our faith, a simple and overlooked aspect of the story is the journey through the desert on foot. Can you image walking mile after mile in sandals? As a Podiatrist you might think I’d cringe at the thought of it, rather my approach is that the journey might have been easier than you might assume. The recent trend toward minimalist footwear and barefoot exercise is really nothing new – it’s been the norm for most of human history. However, the adoption of such practices in the modern environment with its hard and flat surfaces is nothing short of disastrous. I have seen patients who have literally broken their bones by excessive barefoot activities on concrete. Yet the human foot survived millennia of sandals or no shoes at all. The resolution to this contradiction is the surfaces themselves. The human foot is designed to walk, run and stand in a natural environment. Grass, dirt and (of course because it’s Pesach!) sand are the best for the foot to function at it optimum. Taking a cue from our ancestors, give your feet the opportunity to use a natural surface! It’s a wonderful and healthy way to reduce foot problems, improve balance and get back to nature. Going barefoot occasionally in a safe environment such as your garden, is a great way to make your feet more adaptable to our flat, hard urban jungle. Even doing so at home on the tiles, carpet or floorboards has its benefits. The Pesach story is a more than a journey of slaves trudging through the desert with blisters, callus and poor footwear. It’s an opportunity for us to exercise our Heavenly-bestowed freedom through our choices and actions. Freedom is not only in the mind, it is also in the sole! ong before they made their foray into the suburbs, the family of Kerri and Catherine were farmers in Ballarat, renowned for the quality of its potatoes. They now supply fresh potatoes to restaurants and households in Melbourne, direct from the farm. Catherine says, “Our potatoes are farmed sustainably using all ethical methods, not cool stored, thus leaving the potato full of flavour.” Over the years Kerri and Catherine have become the gurus of potatoes, from their varieties to their recipes. “We have third generation potato farming in our blood!” says Catherine. “Our expertise and knowledge of the humble vegetable leaves no clod unturned!” Kerri and Catherine pride themselves on growing and supplying varieties that suit many purposes. “Whether you need the perfect potato for kugel, chremslach, potato salad, frying or baking, our expertise can provide you with the best available” adds Kerri. “ For example, there is a great deal of difference between fresh floury potatoes and waxy potatoes. Recognising these differences can make all the difference between a soggy kugel and a fluffy one”. The girls say, “We are happy to share our knowledge with you. (Good luck getting that specific knowledge from your supermarket!!) Please don’t hesitate to call us if you need to help in choosing your potatoes.” The Spud Sisters will deliver to your door with quantities from 5 kilos. RE-USABLE OR DISPOSABLES?
I
n the early days, disposable dishes were made of paper and mostly used for kids birthday parties and picnics. You would never have used them in your kitchen, or, heaven forbid, in the dining room. How times have changed. The term “disposable” has been replaced with “China look” tableware or “re-usable” tableware to suggest their use for any occasion. There is no doubt about it. With the variety of beautiful disposable tableware available, people are opting to use them for all year ‘round.
5 REASONS TO USE DISPOSABLES: • They are cost effective, particularly for a large function compared to the cost of caterers’ fees, renting and risk of damage • They save you time cleaning up. Especially after a Seder or indeed, any of the seudas, just tip everything in the bin relax, and enjoy the freedom of Pesach with the rest of the family • They are hygiene friendly for obvious reasons. Fresh out of a pack, they haven’t been wiped with greasy tea-towels or handled with sticky fingers • There are gorgeous designs available in amazing imitations to mimic your best dinner set • For those concerned about the environment, there are products available that are bio degradable or compostable Party Bazaar has been supplying the community with disposable crockery, cutlery, paper goods, party ware and much more. THE POWER OF A GREAT BREAKFAST TO ENERGISE US
L
ast issue, I wrote an article saying that there was no validity to the contention that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I want to clarify my point. I stand by that article, but.... If you are hungry in the morning and rely on breakfast for a burst of morning energy, I'm all for enjoying it. Just do it the right way. Hardly any packaged cereals pass the grade of nutritious. If you must, use them up before Pesach andå don't waste your money on them again, except for a rare treat. Packaged cereal should contain less than 10% added sugar, at least 10% fibre per portion, at least 5 grams protein per serve. I'll give you 3 delicious breakfasts, that contain a lot less than 10% added sugar, is very hi fibre, contains tons of protein, and includes healthy fats, and which are very satisfying. MUESLI/ GRANOLA Our daughter recently visited us from New York. The morning she had to leave, she whipped up a huge amount of delicious muesli. Less than 30 minutes to prepare, no more than 30 minutes in the oven at 180c. Oats (leave this out on Pesach), nuts and seeds, coconut flakes, just a little raw honey, and a little chopped dates. This can be refrigerated or frozen, enjoyed plain, with milk or yogurt, as a nutritious delicious breakfast or snack. A second great brekky option is fried eggs with veggies. EGGS AND VEGGIES Chop up any veggie nice and thin, to add to 3 fried eggs. For example, onions, mushroom, zucchini, broccoli or cauliflower. Delicious and nutritious. LASTLY, LOVELY SMOOTHIE For example 1 -1.5 cups spinach leaves, 3 tablespoons protein powder (I buy Amazonia, plain or Stevia sweetened), (replace with yoghurt on Pesach), 1/2 to 3/4 cup fruit - no more , 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal, or 1 tablespoon nut butter. Pour in 1.5 cups of water, and or milk. Blend until a thick liquid forms. Enjoy. Please check with your Rabbi regarding the possibility of kitniyus with some of the seeds.

osh Hashanah, a new start. This is a good time to consider if any lingering commercial or family law disputes can be resolved by cutting through legal formalities. The matter can be finished so people can get on with their lives. A mediator has skills that can assist not only in the actual family law, neighbourhood, commercial or like dispute, but also when it spills over to the personal arena, where the parties and/or their families see each other regularly. This may be as neighbours, coworkers, shul goers, or even just bumping into each other in Carlisle Street or at community events. The mediative technique is for a neutral third party, who has no personal interest in the issues at hand, to facilitate the parties themselves talk to each8:30 other WE AREto OPEN Mon–Fri am –openly 5:30 pm about their feelings. ately I’m finding I’m stuck with extra bananas. Rather than throw them out as they over-ripen, I have decide to give them a new life as muffins. Although the recipe tells you to beat the ingredients, I find it works just as well if you mix it by hand. This recipe is adapted for Pesach.
PESACH BANANA MUFFINS Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • •
3/4 cup oil 2 large mashed ripe bananas 1 1/3 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp baking powder 1 1/3 cups potato starch 1 1/3 cups ground walnuts 1/3 cup cocoa Cinnamon optional Chopped walnuts optional
Method: • Beat together oil, bananas, sugar, eggs, and baking powder on medium. • Add potato starch, walnuts, and cocoa. Beat on low speed until combined. Stir in cocoa until evenly distributed. • Pour batter into muffin pan lined with paper liners about 3/4 full. • Bake in oven preheated to 350 for 15-16 minutes until tops set. • Sprinkle with icing sugar if desired • If you can’t buy kosher l’Pesach icing sugar, just blend a cup of regular sugar in your blender, and in a few minutes you’ll have real icing sugar.

Rabbi Mordy In Hawaii disgusting fress from beginning to end. I kid you not. People arrived by coach as guests, and left as cargo on refrigerated trucks. Some of them had to be lifted on by forklift! There is a plethora of activities available in Hawaii that made Pesach unique. As a reward for returning the afikomen, “As a my youngest insisted that the I take her ‘bungy-jumping’. For those not familiar insisted with this activity, it involves jumping from a tall structure while connected to a large elastic cord. The tall structure is usually a fixed object, such as a building, bridge or crane. It is considered to be one of the most exhilarating experiences around causing an unequalled adrenalin rush. Well, everyone was asking me the same question after my one and only ‘bungy-jump’ experience, “What goes through your mind as your feet leave that platform?” Well, there was only one thing going through MY mind, and that was, “maybe I shouldn’t have lied to them about my weight”!
from the Latin “lipos” meaning schmaltz and the Yiddish “akshen” meaning stubborn. It’s the most effective way of ridding yourself of ‘stubborn schmaltz’. And it’s totally painless, similar to donating blood at the blood bank, except you do

I am ashamed to admit I gained 30 kilos over Pesach, but I rationalised that after all this was Pesach, so seasonally adjusted it was only 20 kilos. And, anyway, I lost it very quickly by visiting my friend in Melbourne Dr. Danny for a session of ‘liposuction’. For those unfamiliar with this wonderful process, let me explain. The derivation of the term in itself is fascinating. It derives 14 YIDDISHE GESHEFTEN AUTUMN 2018 PESACH 5778
it at Dr. Danny’s ‘Schmaltz Bank’. You just lie back in a comfy lounge with a tube stuck in your tummy that draws out humongous bucket loads of fat. I’m not sure where it ends up, perhaps it goes to improve the life some unfortunate metabolically challenged individual who just can’t gain weight, even at Pesach. And when the session is over, you usually are served a free cup of tea with a biscuit, just like at the blood bank, although on this occasion, Dr. Danny insisted I also take home about sixteen packs of KLP coconut macaroons with ‘use-by’ dates stretching back to last century. As we recite every year “next year in Jerusalem”. We’d be happy to go there too, as long as it’s 5-star!

JEWISH LIVING SANITY-PRESERVING GUIDELINE FOR PASSOVER CLEANING
I
n former times, wealthy people who had large houses also had many servants who did their bidding, while poor people, who could not afford servants, lived in small homes with one or two rooms. Understandably, the pre-Passover chores of the rich were performed by the servants, while the poor, who had only their one or two rooms to clean, a few pieces of furniture, a minimum of utensils, and some clothing, took care of their needs themselves. In those days, cleaning was hard. Tables were made of raw wood, requiring them to be scrubbed or even to be shaven to ensure that no pieces of food were hidden in the cracks. Earthen or wooden floors also needed to be thoroughly cleaned and scrubbed. Today, we seem to be caught in a trap. The average modern home is larger than formerly. Furniture, utensils and clothing are much more plentiful. The average home today can compare with the more affluent homes of previous generations. However, we do not have the servants that they had, so that today, all the chores fall on the woman of the home. At the same time she
still feels obligated to clean and scrub as they did formerly, even though she has laminated furniture and tiled floors, making this type of cleaning unnecessary. As a result of this, the pressure of prePesach cleaning has reached unnecessary and overwhelming levels. The housewife often becomes overly nervous, unable to enjoy the holiday joy of Passover and unable to perform the mitzvos and obligations of the Seder night. Passover, like every other yom tov, must be enjoyed by every member of the family, including women. This is an obligation clearly defined in the Torah as explained by our Sages. We can understand a person dreading Tisha B’Av but Pesach is to be looked forward to and anticipated with joy. Every woman should be well rested, relaxed and alert at the Seder table so that she can fulfill all the Torah and Rabbinic obligations and follow the Haggadah with the rest of the family. Clearly, the performance of her pre- Passover duties must be balanced against her Passover obligations. This is an excerpt from a famous essay by Rabbi Pinchas
Scheinberg zl to alleviate the stress of modern day Pesach cleaning. The complete guide can be downloaded from http:// j e w i s h m o m . c o m / 2 0 11 / 0 3 / 2 8 / t h e - f a m o u s - r a b b i scheinberg-pesach-cleaning-checklist/
