CANADIAN TUXEDO Refurbishing a horrendous trend into a stylish one.
Denim will always remain effortless, timeless, and on trend. While, I am not a “jean girl”, the Canadian Tuxedo adds a level of chic edge to classic jean styles. The denim on denim trend is so versatile. You can keep this trend casual with some cute studded statement sneakers or dress this look up with strappy sandals and a bold lip. For this look, I wanted to create an edgy yet casual vibe. Thighhigh boots and thick thighs are guaranteed to turn heads. Accomplishing the element of jean
through the boots are an unexpected style twist. The black and white snake skin trim adds an additional level of style dimension. Pairing the dark denim boots with the bleached denim tunic creates contrast. I sized up on my denim shirt dress to mimic your boyfriend’s over-sized t-shirt/button up that you love to rock! Are you team Canadian Tuxedo? Whether you call it the Canadian Tuxedo or jean overload, the denim-on-denim trend is constantly evolving. Typically, the Canadian Tuxedo consists of

jeans paired with a jean jacket or jean shirt. Here’s my take (the Society of Harlow touch) on the classic Canadian Tuxedo! While the denim-on-denim effect known as the “Canadian tuxedo” may be the butt of a great many fashion jokes, in the glamorous hands of an actual Québécoise, one Céline Dion, the look is no laughing matter, as evidenced by the Instagram photo her stylist Law Roach posted earlier today. Dion managed to style out her custom Off-White true blues to chic results for a sound check.
Add some glamour to your denim using this simple trick. Adding bedazzle to the cuff of your jeans is an easy way to join the dazzlin’ denim trend!

Embroidered denim is the new fashion trend for this year’s spring season. This style is not just a trend for denim but for fashion as a whole. From the Kardashians to the royal family in England, embroidered denim is found on all the fashion trend-setters. Join the movement and go stitch up your denim!
BY Laura Eggerson SPRING IS JUST AROUND THE COR-
ner and it is announcing itself in brightly embroidered colors. Embroidered bags, embroidered shirts, embroidered dresses, embroidered jackets, embroidered leather jackets. And one of my favorite trends this year, embroidered boots. This year this artful trend is making a fierce comeback! Spring is coming up embroidery! Embroidery is something that has been around a long time. In fact it is something that can be traced all the way back to the Iron Age of human civilization! Of course it is believed that is was the Chinese during the Zhou Dynasty, around 1045 BC, that are credited for the more modern embroidery techniques we see today. To them embroidery, was considered a sign of power, wealth and rank. The Chinese used embroidered designs on clothing in a way that each symbol had meaning. For example, a plum blossom was meant to bless the wearer with good fortune whereas a crane represented longevity. People are not as knowledgeable about the meanings behind embroidery patterns today. However I would wager and say that the hidden, or not so hidden, meaning behind this years embroidery trend comeback is most definitely, “Spring has arrived!” For Spring Summer 2017 the designers were not subtle with their use of embellishments, covering the runway in embroidered garments. Last but not least, the accessory fiends Fendi and Gucci utilized the trend via handbags littered in stitch work and beaded embellishment. I like the use of embroidered appliques which have much more depth to them, than patterned fabric. The stitched flowers and textiles are nearly three dimensional and really catch the light, showing off their exquisite detailing. It is a remarkable way to tie in spring to the collections, as opposed to the tired floral prints. This new embroidery trend looks much more refined and expensive. So get ready to embrace jewel toned stitches this season! I for one am off to find myself an embroidered leather jacket! Flared, fitted, or slouchy, this season’s biggest denim trend isn’t about which style of jeans you wear, but how they’re embellished—namely, with cool em-

“ The Ultimate Guide to Conquering Denim’s Biggest Fashion Challenge”
I
T HAS ALWAYS SEEMED to me that there are just some people out there who possess perfect jeans-bodies—lower hemispheres that somehow always look their best in the jeans you always want but can never seem to find, whether that’s flared or ultra-high or ultra-low or cropped or mid-rise or vintage Levi’s 501s (not “new,” exactly, but you’d be forgiven for thinking so considering how many people have suddenly begun sporting them)—and I was just not ever going to be one of those people. Don’t get me wrong, I had my handful of silhouettes down: a small stable of brands and styles that worked, but that was it— not unlucky in denim love, exactly, but aware of my limitations, every changing
room experience a battlefield strewn with pairs of ill-fitting, unflattering, totally depressing denim that often left me uninspired, empty-handed, and endlessly covetous of the ideal-fitting jeans that seemed utterly beyond my grasp. Re/Done’s denim came close, but no two pairs fit alike, which, when you find a pair that fits perfectly, is something of an anticlimax. Like a series of really great dates with a guy who’s leaving the country in a month, it feels like more of a tease than anything. I’m in it for the long-term. And then a colleague took pity on me. Vogue, you see, is perhaps unsurprisingly full of these perfect-jeans-wearers, and rather than a specific brand or site or store, the universal explanation all came down to one idea: tailoring. Oh, come on, I’d say, you really tailor your jeans? Who has the time? Who wants to spend the money? Well, my friends, it turns out I have enough of the former to investigate. And what I found may shock you: No one,
actually, has a perfect jeansbody. We are all jeans-bodies: We just need to help our jeans along. Which is where tailoring comes in. Here, your guide to finding your ideal pair—chances are that they’ve been in your closet all along. Proportion is key. Beaware of pockets and zippers; neither will be moved without a fight. Beware of too-long zippers (often on men’s vintage styles picked up at the flea market) or too-big, unflatteringly placed pockets: If these are relocated, the denim underneath will be a different color. This feels obvious, but isn’t: Jeans that are too big are easier to fix than jeans that are too small. It’s always easier for a tailor to take things a size smaller than the opposite. (Though denim panels can be added to give you some additional wiggle room, it’s not ideal.) You want the jeans to fit comfortably over your largest body part (thigh, waist, hip)— everything else can be taken in to your liking. Be honest
with yourself. Some things will never be what you want them to be. Admit defeat and open your mind to other possibilities—we are almost in cut-off season, after all! Shockingly easy and really quite inexpensive) fixes: Do your jeans fit well, other than that waistband gap? That’s the easiest adjustment of all. Crave the new crop? Have those suckers hemmed. Inner thighs worn through on your skinnies? They’re an inset panel away from a totally restructured (and stronger for it!) pair. The options are, if not endless, surprisingly varied. Really, everyone looks better when their clothes are tailored. “It’s addictive,” says tailor Erin Hogan-Braker. “Once your clothes fit really well, you never look back.” FABRIX, Denim Issue //

TINE
BY KRISTIN ANDERSON “It drove me mad,” Faustine Steinmetz offers with a little laugh, which belies a whole lot of seriousness. She’s speaking about a problem that plagues so many designers, both emerging and established: the matter of sustainability. The designer, famed for her trompe l’oeil felted “denims” and singular deconstructivist spirit, recalls: “At first I really set out to be a sustainable label, but I came to the conclusion, when I was doing my research, that nothing is sustainable. You can only be responsible, really.” It’s a sobering and all-too-true point. For all of fashion’s commendable efforts to green the industry landscape (efforts from companies as wide-ranging as Kering and H&M come to mind), ultimately nothing can stack up to simply not making and consuming those garments in the first place. Of course, that’s not how the world works, so talents like Steinmetz are doing their part to diffuse the inevitable impact of those actions.

DENIM, AND ALL THE WATER used in re-pulping those old Diesel and G-Star pairs was recycled, thanks to her partnership with a sizable factory with that sort of capacity. At the end of the day, though, Steinmetz is chiefly concerned with discouraging overconsumption: Rather than buy, say, three cheap jackets, maybe you invest in one of her beautifully cobwebby styles, arguably as much a work of art as it is a garment. The Parisian talent speaks about the inception of her line not unlike the choice to bring a child into the world: “It started really when I thought about creating my label. As an individual, I didn’t really see the problem too much—I was recycling and stuff, but there’s only so much you can do—but as soon as I wanted to create my label, I thought, That’s quite a big responsibility if you’re going to produce.” In the face of feel-good press releases and initiatives, there’s something particularly refreshing about Steinmetz’s brand of realism. She considers her clothes that of a luxury fashion brand first and foremost, and sustainable second (Stella McCartney being a boldface example of that particular tack at its most winning). That distinction in and of itself touches on one of the industry’s greatest hurdles in the struggle to green itself: You can be luxe, or you can be eco-friendly, but rarely
the twain do meet. Wearable tech inspires a similar sort of conundrum.) Still, Steinmetz seems confident that making the eco aspect simply incidental—rather than ramming it down the public’s throat—is the way forward. “I think this is how things are going to change,” she can offer. SPEAKING TO THE DESIGNER for this feature a couple of weeks ago, our call fell right on the heels of her lately launched Cheap Monday collaboration—perhaps a surprising move for someone who’s been distinguished by the almost couture-like handcraft behind her clothing. Cheap Monday isn’t exactly fast fashion, but in price point and production, it is a far cry from the intensely process-oriented hand-weaving, pleating, and dyeing that characterize Steinmetz’s creations. Fall, Steinmetz will debut a range of more competitively priced basics on her e-commerce site.
