HOW TO ACCESSORIZE YOUR LEATHER NECKLINES
FEATHERED LEATHER Replacing stiff with soft Never one to come across a trend too daring, Rhianna made her Paris Fashion Week rounds on Tuesday, March 10, wearing leather mules with wispy feathers on the soles. From afar, you might mistake her Simone Rocha butter slides for bedroom slippers. The “FourFiveSeconds” singer, 27, teamed her statement-making $560 flats with loose-fitting jeans, an Anthony Vaccarello gray sweatshirt, and a Dsquared2 leather shearling coat. Rihanna took the time to give her curious fans a better look at the unique fashion find via Instagram on the same day, simply writing “Paris” in the caption. The Roc Nation artist isn’t the only celeb who’s worn shoes with eye-catching soles. Back in December 2014, Kim Kardashian wore a pair of Celine sandals, which stood out because of the rabbit fur-lined inner sole.

John Galliano, master in leather fashion, introduced his new line in spring of 2017 that brought leather to a whole other level. His styles and designs pave the way for the future of fashion. alliano explained how he develops Maison Margiela’s couture-like Artisanal collection, which then informs the direction he and his team take with the maison’s prêt-à-porter line. “It’s really important to have the Artisanal line. Where would the world be without the essence? We need the essence, only then can we exploit that for ready-to-wear and accessories,” he said. The designer wore a white lab coat in homage to the founder of the house, Martin Margiela, in keeping with tradition for employees of his namesake company, quipping: “We all look like mad scientists, or doctors.” Asked if he felt innately compatible with the experimental approach of Mr. Margiela, Galliano replied, “yes,” but added: “I’m not there just to curate Martin Margiela. I understand the psychology of Martin Margiela and use that for pushing things forward.” Galliano also revealed how he feels more free and open in his new role . “I feel much freer in this equation, my points of inspiration are much freer. I’m more open now. I leave things a bit more open. I’m more comfortable with chaos,” he said. “The industry hasn’t changed — the shows, the deadlines, production — but my perspective has changed. I can go home relatively early and actually think about what

I’ve done.” Indeed, the wide-ranging conversation, titled “Creativity in the Digital Age,” also covered Galliano’s relationship with social platforms including Instagram and Snapchat, and the future direction of Maison Margiela. “I’m much more in touch with the real world today,” said Galliano, citing his love for Snapchat, as well as the power of digital ‘glitches’ to introduce happy accidents into the design process. “Imperfection opens many more avenues to travel down.” ON THE FUTURE DIRECTION OF MARGIELA, GALLIAno said: “I’m not yet in my full stride in Maison Margiela. But I’m more in the moment, doing the best that I can and leaving options open. It’s done with joy, it’s done with passion.“You try to find a balance,” he continued. “I wanted to work more on my own terms. It’s not as bad as it used to be — that was exhausting.” Critically, Galliano now helms a much smaller studio than he once did in his days at the megabrand Christian Dior, and said how much he enjoys working with both a more intimate team and younger people, including what he called “Instagram babes,” some of whom have become his muses. A LEATHER JACKET IS to your wardrobe what a Beyoncé track is to your workout: critical. Whether it’s a classic black moto, an embellished bomber, or a colorful trench, the piece is a staple no matter your style. They do require a little more TLC than the rest of your outerwear wardrobe, however. You can’t just toss one in the wash and hope it’ll come out looking fresh and new (seriously, don’t do that). To find out how to clean your leather jacket the right way, we talked to Jess Cambronero,
design director of VEDA, the brand behind some of the best leather jackets (and dresses, and pants) in the game, and culled from our own experiences so you can learn from our mistakes. Remember that prevention is always better than a cure. If your jacket is still brand new and unworn, make sure you protect your investment before wearing it out. Think about it—you wouldn’t drive an uninsured car, right? “A leather or suede protectant spray is important to protect your garment or shoes from water and rain,” says Cambronero. “Kiwi Protect-all is a good option, but always spot test first to make sure the spray doesn’t cause any damage or discoloration!” For this, pick somewhere inconspicuous like under the arm or lapel. If it’s too late and the water-damage is done, skip this for now and circle back to step one at the end of your process. Also, check the label and

see how long the protectant spray lasts—it doesn’t hurt to reapply every few weeks or months. Let water stains dry naturally. If you accidentally get caught in the rain or spill some water on yourself, don’t throw your leather or suede jacket in the dryer or try to spot-dry with a hair-dryer, as the direct heat will damage the natural material. Instead, we recommend you hang the damp piece somewhere with plenty of light and airflow to let it dry on its own. Use alcohol to remove ink stains. Have you evedropped a black pen on the sleeve of your new cream leather jacket? Take it from us: it’s not fun. Plain old rubbing alcohol (also called Isopropyl alcohol if you’re looking for it in the store) should help remove ink stains from smooth leather— but don’t try this on suede, which is best left for a professional dry cleaner.
Use a white cotton cloth soaked with alcohol and blot the stain gently until the ink has faded. Be careful here: scrubbing too hard could cause fading. Apply a leather conditioner to older leathers. Leather conditioner (like hair conditioner) is meant to soften and protect—but it’s not always a necessary step for brand-new jackets, which are usually made from soft, thin leather. However, says Cambronero, “For a very sturdy and stiff leather a leather conditioner would help to keep it soft.” It’s not only a tactile thing, either: conditioner prevents leather from cracking and breaking down over time.
