hello welcome to LZ#6 this month’s issue is all about the change in seasons, as the bitter autumn winds begin to arrive in force. alongside the usual mix of poetry, photography, art and writing, we’ve got news of Leamington’s very own videogame festival, as well as the inaugural Emerge theatre festival at Warwick Arts Centre. with last month’s sudden closure of LAMP still ringing in our ears we encourage you more than ever to take a look at the listings, both in this issue and online, and get out there to support your local arts groups, performers and venues. these things don’t happen if you don’t go. as always, a huge thank you to our contributors and supporters. we welcome any/all feedback, contact details and credits are at the back. we hope you enjoy. FB / SF Like so much wet and wilted wood dropped in high autumn winds by changing trees we lounge, pallid and panda-eyed, the soft metallic tang of tinned beer coating our palates. I see eyelids flicker near my feet, butterfly kisses strobing through a mussy fringe. I watch the eddies in the cobalt-blue smoke of a half dozen last-one-of-the-night smokers

roll upwards and spin apart in lancing lines of morning sunlight. What was that line in Fight Club? Something about not having a great war to fight and no cause for which to die? I forget. But I wonder if this scene was what Chuck was thinking about?

5

Swallowing hard on 24 long hours and holding back the bile born of a thousand alien tastes

(hairspray, gin and taurine to name a few) I note the veil drop, all becoming clear to view: For each misstep, a steady foot. For each fall back, a good spring forward. For each great war fought by great dead men, a morning like this, where unburdened children doze in dawn’s first rays and pay back their debt to generations long passed with life lived well and recklessly and all liberties taken.

BACKSPACE FESTIVAL Following an acclaimed debut in 2013, the Backspace festival returns to celebrate the region’s rich 30 year history of game development, and to encourage the next wave of Midlands talent. As well as taking a close look at Leamington’s home grown efforts, Backspace 2.0 will showcase the creativity and technological innovation across the region, including companies and communities throughout Coventry and Warwickshire. From the 25th October - 2nd November there will be a broad range of activities for all ages and interest levels, including the centrepiece exhibition in Regent Court, charting the story of over three decades of game development. The exhibition will also provide the starting point for the ‘Spa-Cade’, a cross-town trail of locally made games, alongside RaspberryPi progamming workshops, an industry quiz, a disabled gaming showcase by charity SpecialEffect and a final game careers evening. Telling the compelling tale of how a small Midlands region helped to change the face of the largest entertainment industry in history, Backspace proves there’s more to Leamington than meets the eye. Saturday 25th October – Sunday 2nd November Saturdays 10am-6pm Sundays 10am-4pm Weekdays 12 noon–6pm. 10

EMERGE FESTIVAL To celebrate their 40th anniversary Warwick Arts Centre will be launching the inaugural Emerge Festival this October, in collaboration with the Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL). Designed to showcase the work of graduate theatre companies, and to study theatre and performance as tools for learning and research, the festival will feature four days of workshops, forums, and discussions, followed by performances from emerging and established graduate theatre companies, including Fellswoop, Fat Git, Forced Entertainment, Gob Squad, Dumbshow and Kill The Beast. Whole day tickets to the collaborative workshops, which include sessions on writing, adapting and producing theatre, are open to anyone with a Warwick or Coventry University affiliation. The afternoon sessions and theatre performances at the Arts Centre are open to all. A full list of the festival’s programme of events can be found at the site below, with the special ’Emerge’ performances listed opposite. It’s an exciting opportunity to see and learn from the achievements of recent graduates, and a great chance to support developing companies on their way up. Tickets for each show are £6.50, any 2 for £10 or all 4 for £18. warwickartscentre.co.uk/series/emerge-laboratory

Fellswoop: Ablutions - Tues 28th Oct 7.15pm Adapted from the novel by Patrick deWitt. award-winning Fellswoop Theatre’s Ablutions (in association with Bristol Old Vic Ferment) is a dark, boozy tale from the sodden depths of the LA underworld, blending a live soundtrack, detailed mime and deWitt’s heartwrenching humour. Fat Git: (i feel fine) - Tues 28 Oct 8.45pm £6.50 A love story, set in the shadow of environmental collapse. The daisies have begun to wilt, the ice caps are all but gone and people have started to bulkbuy tinned food. But Tim really likes Daisy and she didn’t explicitly say no to a second date. Dumbshow: The Pearl - Fri 31st Oct 7.15pm Dumbhow present Steinbeck’s timeless story of wealth, greed and love. When impoverished Kino finds the ‘pearl of the world’, he believes his family’s life will be transformed forever, but is blind to the danger of having something that everyone wants. Kill The Beast: The Boy Who Kicked Pigs - Fri 31st Oct 8.45pm 13 year old Robert Caligari is a nasty piece of work. But today is the day he gets his comeuppance. Today is the day he’s going to die. An acclaimed adaptation of Tom Baker’s darkly comic story featuring projections, original music and many hats - a gloriously grisly tale of one scoundrel’s attempt at infamy. 13
