Letter from the Chair
Ten Years of Innovation and Impact!
LEAP was established in 2012 to address Canada’s most pressing social challenges. Recognizing that opportunities for high-impact interventions lay within the vast but under-resourced social impact landscape, we understood that by harnessing the power of collaboration we could drive massive change.
Our journey since those early days has been extraordinary. Started as just an idea ten years ago, we have continually refined our model of engagement and deepened our partnerships, becoming Canada’s leading social impact innovator. Over the past decade, we have collaborated with 30 ground-breaking organizations, helping them grow by an average of 6x and improving the lives of more than six million Canadians across all provinces and territories.
Although collaboration across sectors can pose challenges, we know that it can spark innovation and create profound and lasting change. Our immense growth is possible because of incredible partnerships with our private sector partners, our advisors, our champions, and our board members. By bringing together their resources, expertise and commitment, we have fueled scale for LEAP’s portfolio of social ventures and laid the groundwork for systemic change in the social sector.
Likewise, a decade of relentless dedication and unwavering belief in the power of our model by the social venture leaders, our donors, team and volunteers has been instrumental in our success.
While we have much to celebrate, there is still a significant amount of work ahead to drive the systemic change we know to be vitally important. Though our world has changed dramatically since our inception, the core principles on which LEAP was founded and which guide our forward motion remain the same: Collaboration. Innovation. Impact.
And now, as we look ahead to the next ten years, we must ask ourselves: what must we strive for and accomplish to achieve the society we all envision? It is this spirit that will continue to propel us towards our vision of a society where everyone has the opportunity to reach their potential.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you to the fearless and passionate leaders and teams of LEAP and the social ventures, and to our community of partners for their immense contributions to bring LEAP’s vision to life.
Joan Dea Chair of the Board, LEAP | Pecaut Centre for Social Impact
2022 IMPACT REPORT 2
Letter from the Managing Director
Collaboration is central to the scaling and sustainability that the social impact sector requires.
2022 was a year of tremendous advancement for LEAP. We experienced the growth and positive change that is possible when a diverse group of talented and passionate people from across sectors unite in a shared mission to achieve common goals.
We continued our work with the social ventures in the Healthy Futures initiative, helping them scale to reach to 3x more people since the start of our work together in 2020. New partnerships emerged within the cohort, enabling expansion of impactful programs. Knowledge-sharing across the cohort improved programming to better serve our communities. Our approach to data informed the impact we are collectively making on the issue of chronic disease prevention.
With the generosity of our donor community, we doubled our work. This critical expansion allowed us to replicate our rigorous, data-driven approach with the launch of our latest initiative, The Equity Opportunity. We continue to broaden our view of the social impact ecosystem and to deepen our understanding of its shared challenges and opportunities for collective action.
Throughout the year, we have been thankful for the collaboration that makes our work possible. Something remarkable happens when extraordinary leaders from different sectors share an understanding of what is needed to effect change on complex issues, share a vision of the impact that can be made together, and take action to make it happen. Diversity of thought, expertise and perspective inspire innovative and comprehensive approaches.
We look back with great pride on our efforts in 2022 to scale social ventures and collectively make a greater impact on the complex issues facing Canadians. We thank each and every one who has been involved in making our work possible. Together we will continue to amplify and elevate impactful solutions to some of the greatest challenges of our day.
Lorna Read, Ph.D. Managing Director, LEAP | Pecaut Centre for Social Impact
2022 IMPACT REPORT 3
A Decade of Doing Good, Better
We believe in a society where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Since 2012
LEAP has partnered with 30 social ventures Mobilizing $61M of funding to support their scaling efforts Unlocking $21.4M of pro bono support from our sector partners
The social ventures have grown by an average of 6x Impacting the lives of 6.4M Canadians
In 2012, a forward-thinking group of business leaders came together with a bold idea. They understood that the proliferation of our most complex issues was outpacing the solutions addressing them, and that a radical new approach was needed to help existing social ventures amplify their reach. Our founders were inspired by the late David Pecaut, a corporate strategist and civic entrepreneur who had a deep passion for social change and innovation.
From those early days of inception, the LEAP | Pecaut Centre for Social Impact would evolve to become Canada's leading innovator in social impact.
We launched our work with a single social venture, working with a program serving fewer than 1,000 children. Our objective was to scale their evidence-based programming, and our approach yielded tremendous results. Over the course of our partnership, this program grew by 10x to serve more than 10,000 children across Canada, demonstrating the tremendous potential of our unique approach.
We continued to refine our collaborative model of engagement until 2016, partnering with individual social ventures focused on the issues of education, employment and health. During these years we expanded our portfolio to three organizations, collectively serving nearly 5,000 Canadians.
In 2017, we partnered with Google.org to launch the Google Impact Challenge. This unique call to action enabled ten Canadian social innovators to leverage technology to tackle the world's most pressing social challenges.
“LEAP has been so generous in their willingness to offer effective strategic scaling strategies.”
Jules Porter, Director of Programs, Challenger Baseball
2022 IMPACT REPORT 4
With a well-tested model and a demonstrated track record, it was time to share our learnings – a key priority that has become central to LEAP’s model. In 2019 we held our first Impact Gathering, bringing together top leaders across public, private and social sectors to push forward the thinking about collectively solving the most intractable and complex issues facing Canadians.
Transformational funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada allowed LEAP with our bold vision to step forward and launch the Healthy Futures initiative. We more than doubled the size of our portfolio and expanded our impact into every province and territory.
In 2022, recognizing the unprecedented setbacks women faced during the pandemic, we launched The Equity Opportunity: Advancing Women's Economic Well-Being. This first-in-Canada initiative will build an equitable and resilient future for women in Canada, particularly for those from equity-deserving groups.
That same year, we mapped out a new strategy to broaden and accelerate our impact by adopting an issue-focused cohort model which could support multiple social ventures at once.
COVID-19 put our model to the test. In 2020 and 2021 , LEAP provided crucial financial modeling, partnerships and fundraising expertise to help guide the social ventures through countless challenges they faced during the pandemic. Our support allowed several of them to reach new milestones –and even surpass their impact targets.
Over the past decade, we have built a cutting-edge movement that has impacted the lives of over six million Canadians. This has been possible thanks to the power of innovative collective action and the passionate belief of our social venture leaders, board members, donors, sector partners and team members that together, we can amplify our impact and create a society where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

LEAP’s in-depth research on today’s most pressing issues is the foundation of our work. Through thoughtful analysis and consultation, we define how to deliver the greatest impact.

No single organization or approach can effect systemic change. When diverse organizations collaborate and share knowledge, their united efforts fuel, scale, and accelerate impact.
Capitalize on Strong Leadership
We invest in passionate, visionary leaders and support them through the steep challenges of scaling an organization.
Bridge Community-Informed Solutions with Broader Partnerships
The best solutions are designed with input from the people they serve. We prioritize community-informed approaches that have demonstrated impact and readiness to scale.
Weave a Web of Support
We empower and support social ventures by creating a network of partners, supporters and peers to enable long-term success. Mobilize
the Right Resources
We deploy the right resources at the right time to scale high-impact solutions –from LEAP’s own expertise to pro bono professional services to flexible funds that help social ventures achieve their visions.
2022 IMPACT REPORT 6
Employ Robust Impact Measurement
Data-driven decision making and impact measurement are the foundation upon which scaling success is built. While measurement cannot take a one-size-fitsall approach, it is a critical aspect for every social venture’s growth and sustainability.
Prioritize Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
We prioritize diversity and representation in our partnerships, the social ventures we include in our portfolio, and our broader collective of stakeholders.
LEAP’s Model
1 Define
Through research and consultation, we define the issue, map the ecosystem of social ventures addressing it, and identify key barriers and drivers of change, resulting in our investment thesis.
2 Select
We select ground-breaking, high-impact social ventures with extraordinary leadership, curating a cohort that captures a diversity of interventions and perspectives.
3 Invest
We provide hands-on, longterm engagement to each social venture to support them as they grow. Our proprietary resources, methodology and tools –along with flexible funds and pro bono professional services from our sector partners – set them up for scaling success.
4 Sustain
By sharing ongoing knowledge and experience across the cohort there is continuing learning and solid groundwork for sustainability at scale.

Healthy Futures

The Healthy Futures initiative demonstrates the power of collaboration in action, and how working together fosters innovation, accelerates scaling, and drives social impact.
Since the start of our partnership, the Healthy Futures social ventures have...
their
Funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada , LEAP launched the initiative with the publication Healthy Futures: The Need for Action. Findings include that a large number of Canadians fail to meet physical activity guidelines, do not consume healthy food, or continue to smoke; trends that cost an annual economic burden of $190B. The pandemic exacerbated these problems, making the initiative even more vital than it was at inception.
The Healthy Futures social ventures are a cohort of diverse, community-informed solutions led by visionary social entrepreneurs. Their high-impact interventions encourage Canadians across every province and territory to lead healthier lives, by improving access to good food, inspiring increased exercise and encouraging smoking cessation.
LEAP’s hands-on engagement with the social ventures is comprehensive and long-term, because we know that the best strategies don’t help if there is no bandwidth to activate them. Embedding ourselves in the social ventures’ teams, we provide coaching and support to implement growth plans. Our internal expertise guides capacity-building in strategy, program development, financial modeling, marketing and communications, and governance.
In 2022 alone, the LEAP team invested a staggering 28,000 hours of engagement, providing tools such as impact dashboards, pitch decks, loyalty program design and financial models. This incredible effort is amplified by our sector partners, who provided pro bono expertise worth millions of dollars in areas such as corporate strategy, legal affairs, government relations, fundraising and technology.
Our cohort model creates the collaborative forum for peer-to-peer learning and innovation. Participants report that our model inspires new approaches and partnerships, resulting in expanded reach into new markets – all of which was unimagined before joining forces under the Healthy Futures banner.
Since 2020, the Healthy Futures social ventures have more than tripled the number of people accessing fresh healthy food, moving more and sitting less, or quitting smoking.

The Equity Opportunity: Advancing Women’s Economic Well-Being
A First-in-Canada Approach to Investing in Women's Economic Resilience
In Canada, women continue to face long-standing barriers adversely affecting their well-being. These challenges were exacerbated by the pandemic, which disproportionately affected women from equitydeserving groups. With this in mind, we launched The Equity Opportunity, which seeks to build a more resilient future for women.
This year, LEAP launched The Equity Opportunity: Advancing Women’s Economic Well-Being, which seeks to build an equitable and resilient future for women in Canada, particularly those from equitydeserving groups.
Our in-depth report Advancing Women’s Economic Well-Being demonstrates how investing in women leads to long-term social and economic benefits that have a proven ripple effect.
Advancing Women’s Economic Well-Being, an in-depth report published by LEAP in August, demonstrates that women’s financial security is directly linked to their ability to meet basic needs–such as housing, food, and transportation– and outlines the ways in which we can help women overcome the systemic barriers they face when seeking economic equity.
Lifting women out of poverty and facilitating their fuller participation in the workforce has a net positive impact on their families and communities.
Loremporecti simpellaut eaquoditatia conserfere, opta vel il illectati te volupta accatur rat atiis adis parum fuga. Ensuring women’s equal participation in the economy is good for every bottom line: data shows that by eliminating the gender wage gap, we can increase Canada’s GDP by $150B.
To drive systemic change, we must look beyond economics and tackle the interconnected drivers that impact women’s personal stability. The issue is complex, but by taking a holistic approach to ensuring women's economic equity, we can create lasting and profound change.
The six social ventures in The Equity Opportunity have impactful solutions that are doing just that – while prioritizing people from Indigenous, BIPOC, low socio-economic and immigrant communities, as well as single mothers and entrepreneurs.
