Our Learning Curve description of a healthy state of wellbeing is: feeling optimistic and hopeful for today and for your future, because you know that you are working towards building your best self

The evidence based lessons and activities align with ACARA’s HPE Curriculum for all years of schooling and the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships research for F, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 & 11-12 from the Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne. Teacher Lesson Guides have been created to support you in teaching every lesson/activity in all planners and journals; go the website under the Wellbeing Program tab for the individual guides.

To complement the student planners and journals, we have created a Staff Wellbeing@School Journal for you, and a Wellbeing@Work Journal for parents, to assist the adults in students’ lives to be self-determined to focus on enhancing their own wellbeing. Our Learning Curve team provides professional development for teachers, parents and leadership teams on how to best learn it, embed it and live it, to enable a healthy state of collective wellbeing across your school community.

Research clearly indicates that when both your students’ and your state of wellbeing are in a healthy state, significant personal and academic growth occurs. There are eight Strengths Week spread throughout this planner. They provide you and your class with opportunities to practise using your strengths to build a resilient state of wellbeing. They are also fun to do at home with your family. The order of these weeks are: Curiosity, Leadership, Gratitude, Teamwork, Love of Learning, Kindness, Perseverance, Zest.

GRATITUDE WEEK Think about the little things you already in your life that you are grateful not the things you want; what would happen if they weren’t there? And think about many kind acts others do for you, without you asking; do you say thank you? Choosing to show gratitude builds everyone’s wellbeing. USING SCREENS KINDLY 1

This Lesson: WHY: for your students to use some of their screen time meaningfully to be kind HOW: use screens to be kind to create positive emotions in their familes, friends and themselves. Have fun being kind doing the following activities.

People Who Care – use the online program Canva to make a photo book of the people who are always there for you. Make sure you include those people who you may sometimes take for granted. Then share this caring photo book with each of these people.

What feelings did you have while making your photo book? Were your people who care happy?

Word Search Share – ask two friends to create their own word search using the free online program Puzzle Maker. Words could be about family and friends’ names, sports, foods, music artists, songs or interests. Then the three of you email your word searches to each other, and have fun doing them.

Was it fun creating and then doing your friends’ word searches?

Photo 7 – this is a week long activity for your whole family. Every day each of your family is to take a picture or shoot a short video on their device of something they appreciate or are grateful for. Then have fun sharing these each night at the dinner table together.

HOW: Read Enjoying Feeling Positive with your class. Explain that when they feel positive emotions that their attention and engagement grows and what they are doing becomes more interesting. Share that they are able to create their own positive feelings by doing simple things, such as smiling to receive smiles back, saying hello with a friendly face, asking RUOK, and sharing the many positive things happening all around them that they are grateful for with their families.

DO: Ask students to explore and answer the PERMAH+ questions, do the Wellbeing@School and Mindful Colouring In activities, Big Five Check In, Wellbeing Tip and ask what made them happy this week? Success Criteria: students will be able to: Explain – what they can do create positive feelings in themselves. Do – smile and say hello more.

Being present – listening to students with our eyes, our ears and our hearts students are very good at sensing when our hearts aren’t in it. In my travels, students sometimes tell me that while a number of their teachers know their stuff, they aren’t really there for them as people as the old saying goes, “kids don’t care what we know till they know we care.”
