Resilience@School to Respond Well Resilience is being able to respond well to a challenge at school. When you are faced with a challenge, your brain assesses it as either short term for survival, fight or flight, or long term for future success and responds accordingly. The resilience skills you need to overcome the challenge follow below. Being Self-Determined WHY: by understanding that being self-determined enables you to feel that you have control over the choices you have in your life at school, you will be likely to choose to be self-determined. HOW: to be self-determined at school, three key psychological needs must be met. Competence: the need to feel that you can learn and master different skills in your roles at school. Connection: the need to feel that you belong and matter to others in your school. Autonomy: the need to feel in control of your choices at school and achieving your goals for school. MEANING@SCHOOL

Give to Live WHY: by understanding that most people get much more pleasure from giving of themselves to others than from receiving from others, you will be open to looking for opportunities to give of yourself to live more at school. HOW: when you give, your body language is sending the message to other people at school, that you value them, which in turn releases the feel-good brain chemical serotonin. When others give to you, you will feel that they think you matter as a person. This giving and receiving without wanting anything in return, builds a cooperative and caring atmosphere in your school. Regulating Your Emotions Experiencing anxiety and stress sometimes at school are perfectly normal. But the key is to act immediately to use coping strategies to self-calm and share your concerns with one of your trusted people. It will benefit you to be aware of what your personal warning signals for being stressed are.

Distress signals fall into three categories, which when combined affect your state of wellbeing at school: Physical: trembling, dizziness/headaches, skin disorders, pounding heart, breathlessness, tiredness. Emotional: anxiety, anger, depression, ill temperament, panic, lack of interest/boredom. Behavioural: disturbed sleeping patterns, frequent distraction, forgetfulness, abnormal eating habits. Which distress signals do you feel most often. Rate them using Usually At Times Not Yet

The last decade has seen considerable neurological research into how we can develop our brains to reduce the fight or flight response and function better as individuals at school. Seven core elements have been identified, called the Seven C’s, which are: Connection, Confidence, Certainty, Contribution, Control, Celebration and Culture.
