Introduction by Professor Simon Gaskell, Principal Once again I am pleased to have this opportunity to introduce the Learning Institute Handbook for Queen Mary staff for the new academic year. The year ahead brings many new challenges for all of us. As we move towards a new era of increased student fees, we need to be sure that we offer the best possible experience to our students to meet fully their expectations. This will apply to all Queen Mary staff, whatever their role. At the same time we are striving to assure excellence in the research that we do across all schools and institutes. Perhaps more than ever in our past, we need to ensure we can offer a full range of development opportunities for all staff that can support them in delivering their full potential. Naturally these things will happen in schools, institutes and within the Professional Service areas. At institutional level, The Learning Institute has developed a comprehensive programme for the year ahead that will form a sound base for staff to fine tune and enhance their own skills and abilities, according to their individual context and need. I am sure that colleagues will have taken the opportunity in their personal appraisals to reflect how they can best meet the emerging challenges over the forthcoming year. For many this may mean considering mentoring and coaching arrangements working with trusted colleagues. This is just one example of the specialist advice that The Learning Institute can provide. Professional Development Maintaining a programme of career and personal support for all staff is identified as a strategic enabling aim for Queen Mary and the participation of staff in career learning and development programmes is a measure of this commitment. We offer a range of opportunities for all Queen Mary staff to become more effective in their current roles and to prepare for new projects and possible career progression. The focus is on you as an individual in developing your knowledge and skills, whilst building on your experience. This can then be applied to your learning in your personal work context, the College as a whole and the wider environment. In addition to classroom based teaching and discussion, our approach combines a variety of learning experiences including faculty-led case studies, work-based projects, one to one coaching and leadership development groups. Advice for All Staff You may not see a course that seems right for you, or you are aware of an area where you wish to develop but are unsure whether a course is what you need. If this is the case, please do get in touch with us and we will endeavour to advise you. We know that attending a course is not the only way to learn. There are many different ways of meeting developmental needs and some of the most effective will be informal, quick and easy to access. These include being coached or mentored, reading, distance learning and using web resources, work-shadowing (working alongside colleagues), etc. We can help you to identify how to close the gap between where you are now and where you would like to be, so please do make use of us.

Personal Effectiveness Workshops and Courses This series of open courses and workshops provides one way to meet your developmental needs. The topics covered by the programme focus on four key areas: • Communication Influencing skills, managing conflict, presentation skills, effective writing, assertiveness • Administration Accredited programmes for administrators, note taking, chairing meetings, supporting students, data protection • Organisation Performance management, project planning, managing multiple priorities, stress management • Personal development Negotiation skills, enhancing your personal presence, career planning, planning for retirement. Professional Development

Leadership and Management Development In 2005 the College introduced a framework for leadership and management development along with a new series of programmes for research and academic staff. We offer an incremental series of management development programmes, on a pathway from Introduction to Leadership and Managing Teams finishing at MBA level, which are all accredited or endorsed by an appropriate body (Figure 1). Professional Support Pathway

We can offer advice on which pathway may be best for you. The majority of leadership and management programmes are delivered internally and the course team includes the Institute’s Visiting Professor. The approach of the programmes is contextually grounded using the actual leadership challenges and experiences of participants as a source for case studies and leadership development groups.

Queen Mary Welcome Event for New Staff All new members of staff are invited to a Queen Mary welcome event upon joining the College and we run these three times a year. The day includes presentations from senior members of the College and a lunchtime information fair with Professional Service departments and trades union representatives. New staff will automatically receive personal invitations from The Learning Institute in advance of the next induction event. Appraisal Support

Confidential Consultancy and Support for Senior Staff

The Queen Mary Performance Appraisal Scheme (QMPAS) has been implemented throughout the College and involves all staff as a contractual requirement. All appraisers need to be inducted into the scheme before conducting any appraisal meetings. Full details of the scheme and many supporting materials (including the relevant forms) are available on the website from the link below.

Delivering results, dealing with change and emerging agendas, brings a raft of challenges for those with leadership responsibilities. Advice, information, personal consultancy and support is available in strictest confidence with us or our Visiting Professor.

There is a series of workshops throughout the year for staff who need to qualify as new appraisers, or for those who would like to improve their appraisal meeting skills. If you are new to Queen Mary and would like to find out more about the scheme, there is also an ‘Introduction to Appraisal using QMPAS’ available online at the link below.

Drapers’ Award for Outstanding Service The Drapers’ Awards for Outstanding Service to the College are intended to recognise and honour people whose contribution has had an outstanding and significant impact either beyond their immediate School/Institute/Centre or over a sustained period of time. All members of staff- except academics - are eligible for nomination for these awards. (Academic staff are eligible for awards awarded through separate schemes for academic staff.) Nominations may be made by members of staff or students and should be for outstanding performance which contributes significantly to the Queen Mary’s mission. The awards for the 2011 session will be for £1000 each. The judging panel will be chaired by the Principal, Professor Simon Gaskell, and each of the winners will be presented with their award by him at the annual Award Presentation Reception in November 2011. Every nominated candidate will receive a Certificate of Recognition.

Professional Development Fund and Professional Development Loans We are sometimes able to contribute towards the cost of award bearing professional development programmes for individual members of staff provided there is a strong business case and support from the relevant Head of School. In some cases we may also be able to offer Interest Free Loans to enable members of staff to fund course fees outside the College provided that the individual member of staff meets the criteria for funding.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment We offer services to support academic staff and other staff who support student learning in the development of learning, teaching and assessment and to enhance the student experience at Queen Mary. These include workshops on learning and teaching matters, accredited programmes for staff who teach, schemes to recognise and reward excellence in teaching, and support for the development of local teaching and assessment strategies across the College. Through these services we support the implementation of the Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy and the College’s Strategic Aim 2: ‘To disseminate knowledge through the presentation of inspirational and authoritative teaching programmes to a diverse constituency of talented undergraduate and postgraduate students’. Whether you are interested in your own development as a practitioner, good practice in the College and beyond, the development of strategy, or particular issues around - for example – good practice in assessment or observation of teaching, we hope you will find our services useful.

Accredited Programmes and Workshops to Support Learning, Teaching and Assessment We offer programmes and workshops to help you develop and deliver the innovative and inspirational teaching programmes that are crucial to the College’s success. These are free for academic staff and others in trust who teach our students at Queen Mary.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) is aimed primarily at new members of academic staff, but is open to any other members of College who wish to gain a qualification in academic practice (spanning teaching, research, academic management etc.). The PGCAP is worth 60 Level 7 credits. It is a four module programme intended to develop the knowledge, skills and principles required to be effective in academic practice. It places emphasis on the development of practice at disciplinary level and combines workshops, independent study and work-based activity such as teaching observation. It has been designed to enable new academic staff who have not taught before to meet their probationary requirements. Successful completion of PGCAP also entitles participants to membership of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) (Standard Descriptor 2). Anyone can undertake the programme, and we have tried to make it as simple as possible for colleagues to enrol, study and complete the assessment for it. There are two modules, each of which is worth 30 credits at Level 7. Recognising and Rewarding Excellence in Teaching The recognition and reward of teaching excellence is central to the aim of improving student satisfaction at Queen Mary. We run internal schemes for the recognition and reward of excellence in teaching. The Drapers’ Awards for Teaching will seek student nominations, and one Award may be made per School for the best teacher. In 2011/12 we will be launching the Drapers’ Teaching Fellows scheme, which will invite applications from those members of staff who wish to make a case for excellence in teaching. It is hoped that this scheme will enable us to identify potential nominees for the National Teaching Fellowships Scheme, run by the Higher Education Academy. This prestigious national scheme allows every Institution which teaches at degree level or above to nominate up to three members of staff. Each year, 50 National Teaching Fellowships are awarded to those judged the best performing of the applicants. Queen Mary has an enviable track record in being awarded National Teaching Fellowships, having received at least one fellowship each year since we began to submit nominations in 2006 and QMUL now has won a total of 8 fellowships, making it the institution with the highest success rate among the 1994 Group institutions and also the most successful institution in Greater London. The Learning Institute offers support, mentoring and coaching for potential and actual nominees for the National Teaching Fellowships Scheme. We also offer Drapers' Prizes for the Development of Teaching and Learning. These are given to acknowledge important new developments in teaching and learning that have taken place at School and disciplinary levels. Each year up to six prizes are awarded of £3000 each. Applications will be invited in January, so do check our website later this academic year for details about the next round of prizes. We also offer support for colleagues applying for Fellowship or Senior Fellowship status of the HEA. For: All staff engaged in teaching. Small Grants for Learning and Teaching

PhD Supervision

The Small Grants for Learning and Teaching for 2011/12 offers up to £2,500 each to up to ten projects which seek to improve the student experience or support curriculum or educational development.

The Queen Mary Strategic plan identifies an increase in the size and quality of the graduate research student programme as a key target. In order to achieve this and to ensure a high level of student satisfaction amongst doctoral students, we provide initial supervisor training and the Skills Development Programme for postgraduate research students.

All staff who support student learning are invited to submit applications for Small Grants for Developments in Learning and Teaching. Applications will need to demonstrate a local impact on the quality of the student learning experience and to collect some qualitative or quantitative evaluation of the enhancement. Supporting Curriculum Design and Development The design of the curriculum is key to maximising student engagement and success. We support the development of innovative curricula in several ways: • By providing consultancy to individuals and course teams, on request. • The open workshop programme provides an opportunity to discuss issues of common concern across the College and to gain information about developments and research across the HE sector (see the Learning, Teaching and Assessment section in the courses index).

In order to support the implementation of the Learning and Teaching Strategy of the College, research is conducted within the Institute and with colleagues in Schools. Institutional research such as the Transitions’ Research Project (which explored the experience of undergraduate students moving from school to Queen Mary) provides an evidence base for the development of College policy and strategy. Our practice-based research explores and evaluates developments in learning, teaching and assessment practice and is disseminated at internal events (such as our research seminars) and in publications, internal and external.

• Discipline-based approaches to learning and teaching are considered in detail with participants on the PGCAP programme.

Such research is intended to inform the development of both strategy and practice, and as such may be of interest to colleagues across the College. Similarly, do get in touch if you have an idea for a useful piece of research about practice at Queen Mary.

E-Learning E-learning is now a mass activity at Queen Mary, and is used in some way on the great majority of programmes. The E-Learning Unit within the Learning Institute offers a suite of services and tools to support the effective use of technology in teaching and learning, whether to supplement a campus-based module, for fully online programmes or for using teaching technologies in live lectures. We're here to support you from the inception of an idea, through planning, production, delivery and evaluation, and can also put you in touch with others within and beyond Queen Mary who are doing similar things. Development Programme This year we are offering a wide range of activities: a scheduled programme of workshops and introductory sessions delivered faceto-face and online; on-demand sessions that can be delivered when you choose; networking events to facilitate discussion between practitioners; town-hall meetings to set out the road map for elearning at QMUL; a programme to prepare you for using the forthcoming new online learning environment; and support clinics for your students in the new Helpzones. E-Learning Production Scheme Running for a second year, this successful scheme is designed to fund small projects which require an element of technical development to produce rich e-learning content. We can fund pieces of e-learning development that an individual academic may not have the time or skills to do themselves. We talk over the planned work with you, provide you with an E-Learning Assistant (usually a student with specialist technical skills), and just ask that you feed back about the development through a short case study for our website and practitioners' network. We will fund small projects that are tightly defined in scope and can be completed within a single academic year. The scheme is not able to supplement general teaching budgets nor provide regular funding for ongoing projects, but exists instead to provide a 'kick–start' to new initiatives. E-Learning Studio We run an E-Learning Studio on the Mile End Campus which offers a comfortable and well resourced area for staff to come in and work on e-learning projects. The studio provides staff the (free) use of various technologies to support your use of technology in education. The room can also be booked for small events related to the use of technology to support teaching and learning. There are comfortable chairs where you can sit and read (and free coffee). You can conference, edit video, record teaching content, try out teaching room technologies, do web development, work with audio, talk, read, eat and drink... a place to escape from your office and use up to date equipment on your e-learning projects, or just experiment with possibilities.

Practitioners' Network We manage a network of e-learning practitioners, so that we can publish news and gauge interest in new initiatives, and so that people can share ideas and experiences across the College. We can advise you on the approval process, how to teach effectively at a distance, and can provide you with the tools and support you'll need for the e-learning delivery. For students We do student inductions for the virtual learning environment, student support clinics (for, say, online submissions), and work closely with the Library on skills support. We also do the day-to-day support for student users of the main e-learning services (Blackboard, Q-Review, TurnItIn etc.).


Researcher Development

Researcher Development Research Excellence is a key component of the College’s Strategic Plan (2010-15). This is underpinned by a full commitment to supporting and developing all members of the College research community including research students, research staff and independently funded research fellows. Recognition of the vital contribution that this group makes is demonstrated by the College’s commitment to the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers (www.researchconcordat.ac.uk/), and to the Researcher Development Framework (www.vitae.ac.uk/policypractice/234301/Researcher-Development-Framework.html).

Postgraduate Research Students Postgraduate Research Student Development Programme: This programme of workshops and courses runs throughout the year, to help research students develop the skills and attributes necessary for the effective management of their research and to aid planning and preparation for future careers. The programme combines discipline and faculty based provision and Learning Institute organised courses. This rich and varied programme includes events designed to help with specific aspects of the PhD (e.g. ‘Writing your Thesis’, ‘The Viva’) as well as more widely applicable topics such as ‘Time Management’ and ‘Critical Thinking’. For added value, lively competition events are run to provide more intense development opportunities. These include: ‘Junk the Jargon’ Communication Competition The ability to communicate research in clear and simple terms is essential for PhD students and indeed researchers at any level. This competition encourages researchers to practise this skill by presenting their research in an exciting way to a non-specialist audience.

All full-time PhD students at Queen Mary are expected to take part in 70 hours of transferable skills development activities or equivalent per academic year. From 2011-2012 academic year activities for first year research students activities will be recorded on the central database and a report for each individual PGR student will be generated for the annual doctoral review and progression purposes. It is expected that a selection of the appropriate activities and courses should involve discussion with doctoral supervisors and form part of the normal supervisory process. We offer advice and a full range of services for all research staff and students to support their development and meet the above requirements.

Café Scientifique Café Scientifique evenings are regular events for PhD researchers and research staff. The idea of the event is to create Junk the Jargon 2011 winner Myrto an informal, relaxed atmosphere Chioni, from Barts Cancer Institute, uses props to explain her research. where researchers from all disciplines can meet for informal discussion and present their work and ideas to a general, friendly audience. A typical evening would consist of three short presentations from researchers, refreshments, and other activities such as a quiz, a debate or a creative challenge. Fellowships and Grant Funding The annual QM Fellowship Day attracts speakers from most of the major funding bodies (including AHRC, The British Academy, The British Heart Foundation, EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC, STFC, The Leverhulme Trust and The Welcome Trust). This event showcases their grant award schemes for supporting postdoctoral researchers who plan to become independent researchers. The Fellowship Masterclasses, led by distinguished senior academics, provide additional insights and advice for researchers who plan to submit a Fellowship application in the current year. Programmes in Academic Practice Many PhD students undertake some teaching whilst they undertake their research, so a key part of their development is support and training in how to teach. We are developing resources and workshops for PhD students. We have inaugurated a number of day workshops called ‘Teach Your First Session’ and we currently run discipline-based training for individual Schools. Over the course of 2011/12, we will be carrying out research to identify the ways in which we can support those who are setting out on a career teaching in higher education and will be developing a more detailed set of workshops and supporting materials. We also offer accredited programmes which help you to function effectively across all areas of academic practice, including your capabilities as a researcher. These are: The Certificate in Learning and Teaching (CILT) is a programme for new or inexperienced staff with limited teaching responsibilities, and is worth 30 credits at level 7. We also offer an open programme of workshops for academic staff which includes sessions about enhancing your research capabilities. The Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) is aimed primarily at new members of academic staff, but is open to any other members of College who wish to gain a qualification in academic practice, and is worth 60 credits at level 7. The Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice (PGDip) is aimed at anyone who is teaching and researching at Queen Mary and has more than three years’ experience, or has completed PGCAP (or a similar Postgraduate Certificate at another institution). The PGDip has two modules, each of which is worth 30 Credits at level 7. Graduate Attributes, Enterprise Education and Entrepreneurship For Queen Mary students to compete in an increasingly competitive and unpredictable world they need to develop their employability alongside their subject and professional expertise. Enhancing the employability of our students is core to the College’s Strategic Plan and Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy. The Graduate Attributes Statement, launched in 2010, makes explicit the knowledge, skills, behaviours and values expected of our graduates. This provides a framework for developing student opportunities for learning that are consistent with our academic programmes but are also focused on preparing graduates for their future careers. Within this context we offer a range of services aimed at helping College staff to support student learning for employability, through curricular and extra-curricular activities. We also deliver some services directly to students, including opportunities to obtain certificates endorsing their development of employability. Accrediting Students’ Development of Employability Undergraduate students can have their learning for employability accredited by registering on the Drapers’ Skills Award or the Drapers’ Skills Certificate. To receive the Certificate, students complete an audit of their attributes and attend an interactive debrief event in which they are supported to reflect on the substantive elements of learning associated with their extra-curricular activities. Students aiming to further develop their understanding of employability can apply to join the Drapers’ Skills Award, a supernumerary module that provides structured support to students to identify the learning achieved through study and engagement in extra-curricular activities. Incorporating Graduate Attributes in Curricula Curriculum change can ensure curricula remain relevant in a continuously changing world and requires careful management by programme leaders. Supporting Student Entrepreneurs in Starting a New Enterprise

Enterprise Education is the development of a set of knowledge, skills and understanding about how ‘businesses’ and other ‘enterprises’ (including private, public sector and social enterprise), function, including the key elements of starting a new business venture. In collaboration with Queen Mary Innovation Limited, we offer a range of student development activities (for example, professional short courses co-delivered by industry experts, and specific enterprise focused workshops) that aim to enhance students’ understanding and experience of business and the enterprise environment, through both curricular and extra-curricular activities.

At Queen Mary entrepreneurship is understood to be the establishment of a new enterprise, based around a product, service, or the practice and development of the skills required to achieve this. In collaboration with Queen Mary Innovation Limited, we offer a range of services to support student entrepreneurs. Examples include business plan development, presentations by established entrepreneurs, and 1:1 business coaching. Finance The Finance Department’s training focuses on understanding of the financial processes in the College.

Financial Planning This course is to assist those involved in planning both in academic and administrative departments. It gives an overview of the financial planning process in the College and how the resources are allocated to schools, institutes and faculties. It is also useful for those who have a general interest in the financing of the College.

Budget management There is an annual course on budget management. In addition the Faculty financial managers will assist with training appropriate staff on managing their budgets. Please contact your financial manager for further details.

This is a 2 hour course which is suitable for all levels of staff particularly managers with health and safety responsibilities, who are predominantly office based. Course covers basic legislation, DSE on line information, HSE office safety guidance, common hazards and office risk assessments.

Manual Lifting and Handling

This is a 2 hour course which is suitable for all levels of staff, particularly managers with health and safety responsibilities. Course covers current legislation, common hazards, potential injuries, risk assessments and handling technique.

COSHH Risk Assessment in Laboratories

This is a 3 hour course for all staff and students who use, purchase, control the use of, handle, dispose or store hazardous chemical substances. The course is provided in the context of risk assessment in research and teaching laboratories, based on the Health & Safety Executive’s ‘Five Steps for Risk Assessment’ and the COSHH ‘Hierarchy of Control’ of hazardous substances.

Stress Awareness Course

This is a half-day course. Stress can be an unnoticed and gradual build up of the many pressures experienced in work, at home and in everyday life. Stress effects people in different ways that can either be dealt with or if not spotted or understood, or adequately tackled lead to more problems both physical and mental. The aim of the course is to equip employees to manage their private and working lives that stress is minimised and ill health due to stress is reduced.

Working Safely with Biological Hazards and Genetically Modified Organisms

This is a 3-hour course which is suitable for research, technical and teaching staff working with biological material, clinical samples, pathogens and genetically modified organisms. Topics include Bio-containment, handling biological waste, disinfection and decontamination, personal protective equipment, transport, storage and Bio-COSHH risk assessment, legislation requirements for biological hazards and genetic modification (GM) work will be covered.

Containment Level 3 – Principles and Practices

This is a full-day course which gives an overview of the legal requirements for high biological containment (ACDP Containment Level 3) laboratory work and facility design features, operational practices and safety management principles and practices which enable safe working. Suitable for research, technical and teaching staff and postgraduate students starting work at ACDP Containment Level 3, other staff closely involved with facility operation, and those requiring a ‘refresher’ session.

Introduction to Biohazards and Genetically Modified Organisms

This is a 1.5 hour course suitable for Clinical Research Nurses and Associates conducting clinical trials involving Genetically Modified Organisms.

Laboratory Safety for Non-academic Staff

This is a 2.5 hour course which gives an overview of the hazards,(e.g. biological, chemical, radiation) and potential risks, which non-academic staff may encounter in the laboratory environment during their duties, such as maintenance works, transport of packages, goods and waste, installation of equipment and services and security patrols.

Suitable for College staff and students undertaking fieldwork for research purposes in any setting (e.g. geological, geographical, botanical, zoological, social surveys, interviewing, home visits for clinical trial work, filming).

Introduction to Laser Safety Management Course (provided by external trainers)

This is a full day course for staff and students who intend to handle high risk laser sources. Provides a balanced view of the risks associated with working with lasers, practical measures for reducing laser related risks, current safety standards and legislation and key points of a laser safety management program.

Transport of Dangerous Goods (provided by IATA/ADR accredited external trainers)

This full day course gives an essential introduction to the air and road/rail transport of dangerous goods regulations, covering the classes, packing groups and dangerous goods list as well as marking and labelling, tailored to dangerous goods shipped from/to College premises. Suitable for shippers, packers and receivers of dangerous goods.

Working at Height

This is a 2 hour course which is suitable for all levels of staff, particularly managers with health and safety responsibilities and those who regularly work at heights. Course covers current legislation, common hazards, ladder safety, access equipment safety and risk assessments.

Asbestos Awareness

This is a 2 hour course which is suitable for managers and staff who work or manage work relating to the fabric of buildings/cables/supply or extract mechanical equipment or any areas where asbestos may be suspected. The course covers asbestos related hazards/illnesses, asbestos identification and action to take if unrecorded asbestos is discovered.

IOSH

Working Safely This is a one day course and is suitable for all staff. This Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) accredited course provides grounding in the essential basics of health and safety. The course covers: • Defining hazard and risk • Identifying common hazards • Improving safety performance • Protecting the environment There is a written assessment at the end of the course. Delegates achieving the required standard will be awarded an IOSH certificate.

Managing Safely This is a five day course which is suitable for those staff with management/ supervisory responsibility for health and safety. This Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) accredited course provides delegates with the knowledge and tools to tackle the health and safety issues they are normally responsible for. It explains why health and safety is an essential part of their job. Full First Aid Training course (Three-Day Course)

Fire Marshal training

This 4-hour training course includes: the nature of fire, basic risk assessment, common fire hazards, facing the fire, extinguishing the fire (practical) and role of a fire marshal. A multiple choice test paper to gauge competence is also undertaken at the end of the training. A refresher course will be necessary every two years.

Evacuation Chair Training (nominated staff only)

Practical demonstration and training in the use of disabled evacuation chair. Staff must be able to display confidence and competence in its use and handling..

Temporary Summer conference staff

Basic fire awareness and use of fire extinguishers. (approx 1 hour duration)

Student stewards

Fire evacuation procedure, basic fire awareness and use of fire extinguishers (practical) and safe evacuation routes. Approx 2 hour duration.

Training in Human Resources Policy, Process and Systems Human Resources The courses provided by Human Resources focus on diversity, recruitment and selection and discipline and grievance. We also contribute and design generic management courses as well as providing training on MyHR self-service for employees and managers.

Recruitment and Selection The College’s policy requires that all members of recruitment panels complete the fair selection recruitment and selection course, unless they are able to produce certification of having completed a course at a previous place of work. Those who attended a course more than three years ago, should attend a Fair Selection Refresher session to receive information on recent legislative updates. Information Compliance

Information Compliance – Data Protection and Freedom of Information Whatever your role at Queen Mary, freedom of information, data protection and records management will affect you and how you do your job. Everyone in Queen Mary creates, handles or otherwise uses information and records, and requests for information can come in to any part of the College. For example, at some point, you may need to handle information about an individual; you may need to know what to do when someone asks for information; or you may be asked to organise information so that you, or your colleagues, are able to find specific information quickly.

It is important that staff know their responsibilities in these areas and so the Records and Information Compliance Manager can offer courses which will give participants a basic understanding of the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act and their impact on Queen Mary. These cover the main points of the Acts and their implications for work areas including: • understanding of key terms • recognising a subject access request, and what to do with it • recognising FOI requests and how they are handled

Data Protection relates to personal data, that is, information about an identifiable, living person, such as data in the Student Information System and including expressions of opinion in emails. The Data Protection Act 1998 allows individuals access to any information about themselves held by Queen Mary and regulates its collection and use of information about individuals. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 any individual from any country has the right to access information held by Queen Mary. This information can be in any format, including paper files and electronic records and requests are purpose and applicant-blind. The Act also requires the College to manage its records in line with good records management practice. If you receive a non-routine enquiry (for information that you would not normally provide), treat it as a freedom of information request. Even if the enquiry doesn’t mention freedom of information explicitly, Queen Mary is obliged to respond within 20 working days of receiving it.

Thinking Writing runs retreats for writers wishing to make progress on a writing project. Examples to date are research articles, thesis chapters, a professorial lecture. As well as providing a supportive and focused environment for 2 days of productive writing, we aim to help participants develop writing habits they can continue to employ in other contexts - and pass on to their students.

Showcasing Activities

The Learning Institute working with Queen Mary Innovation Ltd Supporting Student Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at Queen Mary The Learning Institute, Queen Mary Innovation Ltd and the Careers Service have been collaborating on a range of activities for students aimed at developing their commercial awareness and supporting student business ideas. A number of these activities have been supported through the Knowledge East Enterprise Network (KEEN) and Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) funding awarded to QMI Ltd. Xing Business Strategy Game Over 100 students in three Schools have developed their knowledge of business strategy through use of the team-based Xing strategy game. Teams allocated key team roles (e.g. Managing Director, Finance Director) and created an elevator pitch to describe their business proposition succinctly. These events require teams to pitch to a panel of business experts. Flux 2010 Annual National Inter-University Business Planning Competition A team of six students represented Queen Mary at the University of Bristol and competed against 24 other teams in this annual national business plan competition.

Journey of an Idea – Business Plan Competition Students worked in teams of five to develop a new business, including a cash flow, patent specification, summary business plan, marketing plan and a prototype model of their product. Entrepreneurship Apprentice Challenge Ten Queen Mary students attended a two-day Apprentice style challenge hosted by London South Bank University. The students were set a marketing strategy and sales and negotiation challenge. A team from Queen Mary won the overall challenge. Entrepreneurship Funding In 2010-11 13 Queen Mary students have ‘won’ start up grants to support the early stage development of projects that show commercial potential. The grants can be as much as £2000, with the average grant being £1400. Each grant applicant was also offered space in Whitechapel Innovation Centre. LI course booking database The Learning Institute at Queen Mary, University of London, has an online system which is used for browsing and booking courses and events offered both by the Learning Institute and by many other College providers. The booking database is web-based and can be found at: www.learninginstitute.qmul.ac.uk/booking

Registration The first time that you visit the site, you will be required to register. Registration is a simple process that takes a few minutes and you will receive an email with your login details for future reference. Note that we will not use your registration details for any purpose other than managing your course bookings, nor will we pass them on to any third parties. Once registered you will just need to log in to begin browsing and making bookings on to courses.

Finding courses

For some courses that have specific requirements you will receive a provisional place and booking and will be emailed instructions on what will happen next in order to confirm your booking. If a course is full, you will be added to the waiting list and notified by email as soon as a place becomes available.

Managing Your Development When you log in to the system, you can manage all your personal details in the ‘My Account’ area so, for example, if your email address or telephone number changes you can keep it up to date and still receive important messages about your bookings. The ‘My CPD Record’ area allows you to review all of the courses that you have attended using our database. You can also see the courses you are currently booked on to, or awaiting a place for. From here you can also cancel your place or you can choose to remove yourself from a waiting list.

Browsing our programmes of courses is made simple with the inbuilt search facility. All the courses are listed chronologically, allowing you to browse through courses that are coming up. Courses that have already been held, or that have been cancelled, are greyed out.

The Learning Institute

LI Short Courses Programme Booking Arrangements 1. The Learning Institute offers an open programme of courses, workshops and short programmes which are advertised through the Learning Institute website and in our Handbook (published each autumn). This programme is open to all staff members at Queen Mary and is planned taking account of budget available and learning and development needs that have been identified by heads of schools and institutes, and others in the College. 2. The programme aims to provide activities for all categories of College staff, with many courses and workshops being targeted at specific groups of staff. It also supports all categories of researchers.

6. Queen Mary staff and students are not normally charged fees for attendance at courses, workshops or short programmes offered by The Learning Institute. Other staff in NHS Trusts who teach Queen Mary students are also normally able to attend courses free of charge. All others will be a charged course fee at the following rate: Half day activity Full day activity Other course fees

4. Bookings for courses are accepted on a first come, first served basis. The Learning Institute will normally acknowledge receipt of a booking within two working days by email (if possible) and we will confirm whether or not you have been booked onto a course or workshop.

7. Exceptionally, participants may have to cancel places at courses because of illness or for operational reasons. Cancellations for other reasons received less than two working days before the scheduled start of a course may incur a cancellation fee equal to the full course fee given above. You may also incur a fee if you do not attend a course on which you have booked, and have not cancelled your booking beforehand. This is to minimise unnecessary wastage of resources. This fee will be charged to your head of school or institute. Schools/Institutes are free to substitute names of staff attending courses.

5. Sometimes when courses are fully booked, a waiting list will be opened. You will be informed if your name is held on a waiting list and you will be offered a place if one becomes available.

8. Staff and students attending courses, workshops and short programmes can receive a Certificate of Attendance to help them log their own record of continuing professional development.

3. Bookings for courses offered by The Learning Institute may be made through our website, by email or by telephone. For operational reasons, some categories of staff will need to obtain permission from their heads of school, institute or line managers in order to be released to attend staff development activities.

Academic Practice The Team

The Academic Practice team is part of Educational and Staff Development. We support learning and teaching through consultancy, educational research, courses and workshops.

Our programmes The team runs a number of programmes to support staff in learning and teaching, including the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (which is primarily for new full-time academic staff), the Certificate in Learning and Teaching (which is for part-time educators), the Demonstrators’ Academic Development Programme (which is for demonstrators in science and engineering disciplines) and the Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice (which is for experienced staff who wish to carry out an educational research project). There is also a wide-ranging programme of stand-alone workshops in various areas of academic practice which would be of interest to any staff involved in teaching or the support of learning.

For postgraduate research students there is an exciting programme of courses, workshops and events designed to help them recognise and develop the key skills they will need to effectively manage their research and plan for the future (see page ?? for further details)

Recognising and rewarding excellence We also run and manage schemes to support and reward innovation and excellence in learning and teaching. These include Small Grants for the Development of Learning and Teaching, Drapers’ Prizes for Developments in Learning and Teaching and the Drapers’ Awards for Excellence in Teaching. We also manage the College’s process for the National Teaching Fellowship scheme, including coaching applicants and assisting in writing documentation.

Research and events We also carry out educational research and organise events to foster discussion of education within the College. These include the annual Drapers’ Lecture on Learning and Teaching, which is given by an expert in learning and teaching from outside the College, the annual Learning and Teaching Forum, which aims to spread good practice from within the College, an annual student experience seminar and the series of Educational Research Seminars, which are presented by a mix of internal and external speakers on current research into higher education.

Consultancy We also offer consultancy services to departments and individuals from across the College. This is usually in the form of one-to-one guidance and advice from an appropriate member of the team. Issues which we have worked on recently include: Developing assessment criteria for engineering projects, developing learning outcomes and module descriptors for Law, redesigning practical classes in biological sciences and developing skills in mathematics.
