Welcome The Learning Institute Handbook For 2010 to 2011

Introduction by Professor Simon Gaskell, Principal I am pleased to have this opportunity to introduce the Handbook from our newly-formed Learning Institute. During my months as Principal of the College, one of my first tasks has been the creation of our new Strategic Plan which sets out our ambitions for the future and a way forward with clear objectives and milestones. In the current financial environment, more than ever, we need to be sure that we are agile and effective in everything we do. The development of our staff and students will be crucial to our success if we are to move forward as one of the elite research universities in the UK, as judged by robust national and international criteria. I expect the work of the new Learning Institute to have a key role to play in enabling the College community fulfil its true potential. Our success can only be achieved through and by the people who work here. I hope that staff from across the College will find the services of the new Learning Institute useful in enhancing institutional performance and ensuring that our students receive the best possible experience whilst with us. The Learning Institute is here to support us all in our work and the services offered will remain tightly aligned to our strategy through new lines made possible by the academic structure for the College which I have put in place this year. The Learning Institute at Queen Mary The Learning Institute at Queen Mary is a centre of expertise providing specialist services to promote and enhance learning and development across the College community. We provide a range of services to support staff and student learning and development, designed to help you teach, research, work and study effectively at Queen Mary. These consist of programmes, courses and events, individual and group consultancy, award and recognition schemes, funding opportunities, tools and resources, and collaborative networks.

The Learning Institute is one of the College’s Professional Services and we offer services across four areas: Professional Development (for all staff – includes leadership and management development) Learning, Teaching and Assessment (including e-learning) Researcher Development (for both postgraduate research students and all research staff) Employability and Entrepreneurship (for staff supporting the employability agenda and all students)

On 1st September 2010, Educational and Staff Development became known as The Learning Institute, a change approved by the Queen Mary Senior Executive. The reason for this change was to reflect the fact that the name ‘ESD’ no longer accurately reflected what we do. At its creation ESD offered basic staff development, initial support for learning technology and the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice. The growth in scope and complexity over the intervening years has been fuelled by the institutional need for support across a range of new national and strategic initiatives. The unifying theme across all our services in the new Institute is that they support staff and student learning. We are committed to supporting the development of all College staff, but now we increasingly work as well with undergraduate and postgraduate students: our work to support e-learning impacts across the College and on all campuses; many of the College’s postgraduate research students access skills development activities in the Learning Institute; our Drapers’ Skills Award has now become established for undergraduate students and a Drapers’ Skills Certificate is to follow. The challenge for the Learning Institute will be, in the current environment, to provide a range of quality services that meet the requirements of the three Faculties and the professional and support services, yet remain tightly aligned to College strategy. This Handbook is the first publication you will receive from us as the Learning Institute. Inside you will find details of the range of services that the Institute offers to the College. We will hold a Learning Institute event on the 18th November in the Octagon at Mile End. We will transform our Teaching and Learning Bulletin into a Learning Institute Journal which will encompass all aspects of academic practice. We will establish new ways to engage with Schools and Institutes through a network of Learning Institute Associates and Senior Associates so that we can better understand they ways they would wish us to support them. These changes will be appearing over the coming months, with details on our new website at www.learninginstitute.ac.uk.

We offer a range of opportunities for all College staff to become more effective in their current roles and to prepare themselves for new projects and possible career progression. The focus is on you as an individual in developing your knowledge and skills, whilst building on your experience. This can then be applied to your learning in your personal work context, the College as a whole and the wider environment. In addition to classroombased teaching and discussion, our approach combines a variety of learning experiences including faculty-led case studies, work based projects, one to one coaching and leadership development groups.

We know that attending a course is not the only way to learn. There are many different ways of meeting developmental needs and some of the most effective will be informal, quick and easy to access. These include being coached or mentored, reading, distance learning and using web resources, work-shadowing (working alongside colleagues), etc. We can help you to identify how to close the gap between where you are now and where you would like to be, so please do make use of us.

Personal Effectiveness Workshops and Courses This series of open courses and workshops provides one way to meet your developmental needs. Leadership and Management Development In 2005 the College introduced a framework for leadership and management development along with a new series of programmes for research and academic staff. We offer an incremental series of management development programmes, on a pathway from Introduction to Leadership and Managing Teams finishing at MBA level, which are all accredited or endorsed by an appropriate body (Figure 1). Professional Support Pathway MBA (Part 2)

We can offer advice on which pathway may be best for you. The majority of leadership and management programmes are delivered internally and the course team includes the Institute’s two Visiting Professors. The approach of the programmes is contextually grounded using the actual leadership challenges and experiences of participants as a source for case studies and leadership development groups.

Appraisal Support

Tailored Services

The Queen Mary Performance Appraisal Scheme (QMPAS) has been implemented throughout the College and involves all staff as a contractual requirement. All appraisers need to be trained in the scheme before conducting any appraisal meetings. Full details of the scheme and many supporting materials (including the relevant forms) are available on the website from the link below.

Whilst individual development is vital for both the person concerned and the College, improvements in performance can be achieved through more subtle organisational development.

There is a series of workshops throughout the year for staff who need to qualify as new appraisers, or for those who would like to improve their appraisal meeting skills. Queen Mary Induction Events All new members of staff are invited to a Queen Mary Induction event upon joining the College and we run these three times a year. The day includes presentations from senior members of the College and a lunchtime information fair with professional service departments and trades union representatives. New staff will automatically receive personal invitations from The Learning Institute in advance of the next induction event.

Professional Development Fund and Professional Development Loans

An updated version of our on-line introduction to the College will be also available from October 2010, and may be of interest.

We are sometimes able to contribute towards the cost of award bearing professional development programmes for individual members of staff provided there is a strong business case and support from the relevant Head of School. In some cases we may also be able to offer Interest Free Loans to enable members of staff to fund course fees outside the College provided that the individual member of staff meets the criteria for funding.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment We offer services to support academic staff in the development of learning, teaching and assessment and to enhance the student experience at Queen Mary. These include workshops on learning and teaching matters, accredited programmes for staff who teach, schemes to recognise and reward excellence in teaching, and support for the development of local teaching and assessment strategies across the College. Through these services we support the implementation of the Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy and the College’s Strategic Aim 2: ‘To disseminate knowledge through the presentation of inspirational and authoritative teaching programmes to a diverse constituency of talented undergraduate and postgraduate students’. Whether you are interested in your own development as a practitioner, good practice in the College and beyond, the development of strategy, or particular issues around - for example – good practice in assessment or observation of teaching, we hope you will find our services useful.

Accredited Programmes and Workshops to Support Learning, Teaching and Assessment We offer programmes and workshops to help you develop and deliver the innovative and inspirational teaching programmes that are crucial to the College’s success. These are free for academic staff at Queen Mary. The workshops, which are open to all staff, cover a range of issues around learning and teaching and programme design. For more details, see the index at the back of this book and our online course booking system, which you can reach from our website. In addition to the advertised workshops, we can also work with you to design and run bespoke sessions around particular topics, for example to explore issues that may be a priority within your own subject area. If you would like to take advantage of these, please do get in touch. We offer three accredited programmes designed to help in your role as an academic practitioner, and to improve the student experience: The Certificate in Learning and Teaching (CILT) is a programme for new or inexperienced staff with limited teaching responsibilities. It is a two module introduction to the knowledge, skills and principles required to be an effective teacher. It combines workshops, independent study and work-based activity such as teaching observation. CILT is worth 30 Level 7 credits and successful completion also entitles participants to Associate membership of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

The Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) is aimed primarily at new members of academic staff, but is open to any other members of College who wish to gain a qualification in academic practice (spanning teaching, research, academic management etc.). The PGCAP is worth 60 Level 7 credits. It is a four module programme intended to develop the knowledge, skills and principles required to be effective in academic practice. It places emphasis on the development of practice at disciplinary level and combines workshops, independent study and work-based activity such as teaching observation. It has been designed to enable new academic staff who have not taught before to meet their probationary requirements. Successful completion of PGCAP also entitles participants to membership of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). The Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice is aimed at anyone who is teaching at Queen Mary and has more than three years’ relevant experience, or has completed PGCAP (or a similar Postgraduate Certificate at another institution). Anyone can undertake the programme, and we have tried to make it as simple as possible for colleagues to enroll, study and complete the assessment for it. There are two modules, each of which is worth 30 credits at Level 7. If you are interested in enrolling on the programme, or want more information, all you need to do is contact the Programme Director, Dr Matthew Williamson, at m.williamson@qmul.ac.uk. Recognising and Rewarding Excellence in Teaching

Sharing Good Practice in Teaching and Assessment

The recognition and reward of teaching excellence is central to the aim of improving student satisfaction at Queen Mary.

We organise workshops, research seminars, an annual Learning and Teaching Forum and other events to facilitate the sharing of good practice.

We run the Drapers’ Award for Excellence in Teaching, an internal scheme to recognise individual excellence in teaching. The aim of these awards is to provide a tangible means of recognition for inspiring student learning in the College. It also includes excellence in the supervision of postgraduate research students. Nominations are made by students or other staff and the nominated staff are then invited to apply for an award. Each year up to 4 awards of £1500 are made to outstanding teachers. Dates for the 2010-11 awards will appear on our website from the link below, where you will also find nomination forms, lists of previous winners and full guidelines. We also offer Drapers' Prizes for the Development of Teaching and Learning. These are given to acknowledge important new developments in teaching and learning that have taken place at School and disciplinary levels. Each year up to six prizes are awarded of £3000 each. Applications are invited in July, so do check our website later this academic year for details about the next round of prizes.

The annual Student Experience Seminar provides an opportunity for student course representatives to present issues and the student perception of College practice to an audience of academic staff. For dates and more information about these events, check our website throughout the year. We produce good practice guides and other publications (for example on Good Practice in Assessment), which you will find in hard copy if you drop in to The Learning Institute, and are also available on request. We also have a growing bank of video resources, featuring QM colleagues talking about their own practice. Small Grants for Learning and Teaching The Small Grants for Educational Developments Fund for 2010/11 offers up to £2,500 each to up to ten projects which seek to improve the student experience or support curriculum or educational development. All staff who support student learning are invited to submit applications for Small Grants for Developments in Learning and Teaching. Applications will need to demonstrate a local impact on the quality of the student learning experience and to collect some qualitative or quantitative evaluation of the enhancement. Using Learning Technologies Our E-Learning Unit offers services to support and promote effective practice in e-learning, whether for blended or distance learning, for online or teaching room technologies, for platforms we run (such as the College's VLE) or through the use of other tools. We offer technologies that we support, expert advice for tools we don't, consultancy for individuals or Schools, funding for e-learning production or for online tutoring, planned or bespoke courses and events, online resources and collaborative networks within which to share ideas and practice, and a studio space in which to develop or demonstrate uses for learning technologies. We work with individuals, groups, Schools or whole Faculties to devise and implement e-learning initiatives big or small. We're also keen to hear from anyone doing anything innovative, or just something simple that really works. Areas in which we offer support: Sharing practice: the E-Learning Practitioners' Network This year we are launching an E-Learning Practitioners' Network. This is a space for anyone interested or involved in e-learning (or, indeed, learning) to share ideas and practice with others around the College. We also publish news (conferences, funding opportunities etc), organise seminars and speakers around interests expressed in the Network, and envisage it as the online and social hub of crossCollege e-learning activity and information. Using the VLE to enhance learning and teaching We run the College's Virtual Learning Environment, Blackboard, which is used for e-learning on some 1500 Queen Mary courses, and is now part of daily study for most of our students. This is the core technology for most course-based e-learning activity. We offer training and advice on the practice and pedagogy of using it effectively, as well as day-to-day user support for staff and students, and comprehensive online resources. Q-Review: a lecture capture service A popular pilot project in its second year, offering a service whereby your lecture can be automatically recorded in different formats, and a podcast/RSS feed, download link, and a link from your VLE course area are immediately available. E-Learning production service A scheme whereby we are able to fund pieces of e-learning development that an individual academic may not have the time or skills to do themselves. We talk over the planned work with you, and provide a trained Postgraduate Student to work with you, and just ask that you feed back about the development and its impact through our Practitioner Network. We can also help with setting up online tutoring for e.g. your distance learning course.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment

Using teaching room technologies We can give you advice and demonstrations about using technologies available during a teaching session, such as audience response systems, tablets, interactive whiteboards, visualisers and other kit now available in QM's lecture rooms. Using web-based technologies for teaching, work, study Social software, software as a service, user-generated content, web conferencing, the staple tools of Web 2.0, the explosion of possibilities in the last few years means we can now all use external software to do interesting things (in our teaching, our learning, our work here), often freely or cheaply. We'll help you navigate the world of unsupported but intensely useful web technologies, working from the opportunity/problem to the solution. The E-Learning Studio: development and demonstration The Studio is a well-resourced area for staff and postgraduates to use for work on their own e-learning projects, and where we can demonstrate some of the latest learning technologies to interested colleagues. We also do our seminars and training sessions there (3rd Floor, Francis Bancroft Building, Mile End). The studio is now four years old, and will be refreshed in January 2011 to feature the latest technologies for learning. Do drop in – it’s a free facility for you to take advantage of. Developing students as e-learners This year we are able to run a series of 'E-Learning Clinics' for students who are themselves increasingly learning through electronic media. We have a dedicated E-Learning Student Support Adviser who can answer student queries about e-learning, such as: How do I use the Web effectively in my studies? How do I get the best out of my Blackboard course? How do I reference and search online academic resources? Online assignments, deterring and detecting plagiarism Many areas of Queen Mary are now using the VLE for electronic submission of coursework. We offer support for online submission in the VLE, help for those using the TurnItIn software to detect and deter plagiarism, and online resources for students to inform them about the issues surrounding plagiarism. PhD Supervision The Strategic plan of the College identifies an increase in the size and quality of the graduate research student programme as a key target. In order to achieve this and to ensure a high level of student satisfaction amongst doctoral students, we provide initial supervisor training and the Skills Development Programme for postgraduate research students. For new supervisors the Learning Institute provides workshops for staff in disciplinary groupings to address best practice for research supervision and review some of the problems and solutions associated with this area of academic practice. All experienced PhD supervisors must receive refresher training within their School or Faculty at least once every five years, in order to ensure that they are up to date with any changes in College guidelines, regulations or procedures pertaining to research degrees.

Support for Developing and Evaluating Teaching Strategies Each School has a local strategy for teaching and learning which operates within the broader context of the College’s Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy. The publication this year of a new College strategy means that many Schools will be reviewing, evaluating and renewing their own strategies. We can offer advice and support for this process, in the form of one-on-one consultancy, developmental activities and through examples in other subjects. Researcher Development

Researcher Development Institutional and Practice-Based Research In order to support the implementation of the Learning and Teaching Strategy of the College, research is conducted within the Institute and with colleagues in Schools. Institutional research such as the Transitions’ Research Project (which explored the experience of undergraduate students moving from school to Queen Mary) provides an evidence base for the development of College policy and strategy. Our practice-based research explores and evaluates developments in learning, teaching and assessment practice and is disseminated at internal events (such as our research seminars) and in publications, internal and external. Such research is intended to inform the institution and its subject areas in the development of both strategy and practice, and as such may be of interest to colleagues across the College. The College is committed to supporting and developing its postgraduate research students, research staff, independently funded research fellows and academic staff, and recognises the vital role that this group plays in helping to achieve our research goals. Postgraduate Research Students Postgraduate Research Student Development Programme: This programme of workshops and courses runs throughout the year, to help research students develop the skills and attributes necessary for the effective management of their research and to aid planning and preparation for future careers. This rich and varied programme includes events designed to help with specific aspects of the PhD (e.g. ‘Writing your Thesis’, ‘The Viva’) as well as more widely applicable topics such as ‘Tackling Procrastination’ and ‘Critical Thinking’. For added value, lively competition events are run to provide a more intense development opportunity including: ‘Junk the Jargon’ Communication Competition The ability to communicate research in clear and simple terms is essential for PhD students and indeed researchers at any level. This competition encourages researchers to practise this skill by presenting their research in an exciting way to a non-specialist audience. Café Scientifique Café Scientifique evenings are regular events for PhD researchers and research staff. The idea of the event is to create an informal, relaxed atmosphere where researchers from all disciplintes can meet and chat, and also present their work and ideas to a general, friendly audience. A typical evening would consist of three short presentations from researchers, refreshments, and other activities such as a quiz, a debate or a creative challenge.

Making it Happen Professional Short Course Open to PhD students, post-doctoral researchers and ImpactQM scholars, this is a professional short course co-delivered by industry partners. The course will allow participants to improve their knowledge of enterprise, innovation and knowledge transfer, and how to successfully exploit research results. Innovation Scholarships These awards, offered by Queen Mary Innovation Ltd., are open to those research students registered on the Making it Happen Short Course. Research and Academic Staff We offer a programme of special events, development activities and workshops designed specifically for research staff across the College. These aim to support the College commitment to the Concordat and the career development of research staff. Fellowships and Grant Funding There is an annual Fellowship Day which attracts speakers from most of the major funding bodies (including EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC, The Leverhulme Trust, The Welcome Trust and the Royal Society). This event showcases their grant award schemes for supporting postdoctoral researchers who plan to become independent researchers. The Fellowship Masterclasses, led by distinguished senior academics, provide additional insights and advice for researchers who plan to submit a Fellowship application in the current year. The Fellowship webpage provides details of the application procedures and information about the support that is available to assist you with making your funding application. Videos of presentations and sessions from recent Fellowship events are also available (link below). Research Staff Workshops We offer a programme of workshops and activities tailored to meet the needs of research staff across the College. The topics include: research project management, creative thinking and research leadership and management (see the Research Staff section of the courses index). We also provide Career Pathways Days, with follow-up individual consultancy and support on request. Academic Leadership and Research Management Programmes (ILM endorsed) We offer a suite of three leadership programmes designed specifically for research and academic staff. Programmes in Academic Practice We offer accredited programmes which help you to function effectively across all areas of academic practice, including your capabilities as a researcher. These are: The Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) is aimed primarily at new members of academic staff, but is open to any other members of College who wish to gain a qualification in academic practice, and is worth 60 credits at level 7. The Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice (PGDip) is aimed at anyone who is teaching and researching at Queen Mary and has more than three years’ experience, or has completed PGCAP (or a similar Postgraduate Certificate at another institution). The PGDip has two modules, each of which is worth 30 Credits at level 7. The Certificate in Learning and Teaching (CILT) is a programme for new or inexperienced staff with limited teaching responsibilities, and is worth 30 credits at level 7. We also offer an open programme of workshops for academic staff which includes sessions about enhancing your research capabilities. Employability and Entrepreneurship For Queen Mary students to compete in an increasingly competitive and unpredictable world they need to develop their employability alongside their subject and professional expertise. Enhancing the employability of our students is core to the College’s Strategic Plan and Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy. The Graduate Attributes Statement, launched in 2010, makes explicit the knowledge, skills, behaviours and values expected of our graduates. This provides a framework for developing student opportunities for learning that are consistent with our academic programmes but are also focused on preparing graduates for their future careers. Within this context we offer a range of services aimed at helping College staff to support student learning for employability, through curricular and extra-curricular activities. We also deliver some services directly to students, including opportunities to obtain accreditation for development of their employability. Accrediting Students’ Development of Employability Undergraduate students can have their learning for employability accredited by registering on the Drapers’ Skills Award or the Drapers’ Skills Certificate. To receive the Certificate, students complete a number of activities which they choose from a list of on-campus opportunities such as careers workshops, Peer-Assisted Study Support (PASS) mentoring and Language and Learning Unit courses. Students aiming to further develop their understanding of employability can apply to join the Drapers’ Skills Award, a supernumerary module that provides structured support to students to identify the learning achieved through study and engagement in extra-curricular activities. Incorporating Graduate Attributes in Curricula Curriculum change can ensure curricula remain relevant in a continuously changing world and requires careful management by programme leaders. The Queen Mary Statement of Graduate Attributes describes the knowledge, skills values and behaviours expected of Queen Mary graduates. As such it provides a key reference point for the review and enhancement of curriculum provision as well as providing a framework for students’ personal development planning. Supporting Students’ Informal Learning, Intercultural Communication and Digital Literacies Students need to develop their digital literacy skills to enable them to handle and communicate information and knowledge effectively, using a variety of media and formats. We have developed a framework for students to develop their digital literacy skills based around the use of social networking software and moderated peer mentoring. The focus of the learning is on intercultural communication and can be linked to specific academic modules and is being used to support languages and law students on their year abroad. The Finance Department’s training focuses on understanding of the financial processes in the College.

Financial Planning This course is to assist those involved in planning both in academic and administrative departments. It gives an overview of the financial planning process in the College and how the resources are allocated to departments, institutes and sectors. It is also useful for those who have a general interest in the financing of the College.

Budget management There is an annual course on budget management. In addition the Faculty financial managers will assist with training appropriate staff on managing their budgets. Please contact your financial manager for further details.

Working at Height

This course covers risk assessments and use of access equipment and is suitable for staff that work at heights or manage staff working at heights.

Asbestos Awareness

This course is suitable for managers and staff who work or manage work relating to the fabric of buildings/cables/supply or extract mechanical equipment or any areas where asbestos may be suspected.

Working with Radioactive Isotopes

Suitable for new and existing radiation workers.

Full First Aid Training course (Four-Day Course)

Suitable for all staff who are required to become First Aiders.

First Aid Re-qualifier (Two-Day Course)

A two-day re-qualifying first aid course.

Fire Marshal training

This three-hour training course includes: the nature of fire, basic risk assessment, common fire hazards, facing the fire, extinguishing the fire (practical) and role of a fire marshal. A multiple choice test paper to gauge competence is also undertaken at the end of the training.

Evacuation Chair Training (nominated staff only)

Practical demonstration and training in the use of disabled evacuation chair. Staff must be able to display confidence and competence in its use and handling.

Temporary summer conference staff

Basic fire awareness and use of fire extinguishers. (approx 1 hour duration)

Student stewards

Fire evacuation procedure, basic fire awareness and use of fire extinguishers (practical) and safe evacuation routes. Approx 2 hour duration.

First year student induction

Presentation of do’s and don’ts in Halls of Residence and keeping safe whilst at QMUL. Approx 15 mins duration.

Security staff

Well-being and Stress Stress can have significant health consequences on an individual as well as cost implication for the organisation. The impact can be reduced by increasing self-awareness and improving the stress management skills of the individual and line managers, through training and workshop activities. It is important to note that individual factors can alter or modify the way we work and our exposure to workplace stress. Each individual has his or her own personal stress threshold. Line managers play a vital role in preventing stress. They are likely to see the problems causing the stress first hand and be in the best position to notice changes in staff behaviour that may indicate a stress-related problem.

The Stress management course is for line managers and the course aim is provide managers with essential components of stress and its management. The course will help managers to identify workplace stressors and learn how to tackle them and improve their people management skills. Training in Human Resources Policy and Process The courses provided by Human Resources focus on diversity, recruitment and selection and discipline and grievance. We also contribute and design generic management courses.

Recruitment and Selection The College’s policy requires that all members of recruitment panels complete the fair selection recruitment and selection course, unless they are able to produce certification of having completed a course at a previous place of work. Those who attended a course more than three years ago, should attend a Fair Selection Refresher session to receive information on recent legislative updates. Information Compliance – Data Protection and Freedom of Information Whatever your role at Queen Mary, freedom of information, data protection and records management will affect you and how you do your job. Everyone in Queen Mary creates, handles or otherwise uses information and records, and requests for information can come in to any part of the College. For example, at some point, you may need to handle information about an individual; you may need to know what to do when someone asks for information; or you may be asked to organise information so that you, or your colleagues, are able to find specific information quickly.

It is important that staff know their responsibilities in these areas and so the Records & Information Compliance Manager can offer courses which will give participants a basic understanding of the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act and their impact on Queen Mary. These cover the main points of the Acts and their implications for work areas including: • understanding of key terms • recognising a subject access request, and what to do with it • recognising FOI requests and how they are handled

Data Protection relates to personal data, that is, information about an identifiable, living person, such as data in the Student Information System and including expressions of opinion in emails. The Data Protection Act 1998 allows individuals access to any information about themselves held by Queen Mary and regulates its collection and use of information about individuals. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 any individual from any country has the right to access information held by Queen Mary. This information can be in any format, including paper files and electronic records and requests are purpose and applicant-blind. The Act also requires the College to manage its records in line with good records management practice. If you receive a non-routine enquiry (for information that you would not normally provide), treat it as a freedom of information request. Even if the enquiry doesn’t mention freedom of information explicitly, Queen Mary is obliged to respond within 20 working days of receiving it.

Urban Writing Retreats for staff and postgraduate research students Thinking Writing runs retreats for writers wishing to make progress on a writing project. Examples to date are research articles, thesis chapters, a professorial lecture. As well as providing a supportive and focused environment for 2 days of productive writing, we aim to help participants develop writing habits they can continue to employ in other contexts - and pass on to their students.

The Learning Institute working with Queen Mary Innovation Ltd Supporting Student Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at Queen Mary The Learning Institute and Queen Mary Innovation Ltd have been collaborating on a range of activities for students aimed at developing their commercial awareness and supporting student business ideas. These activities have been supported through the Knowledge East Enterprise Network (KEEN) funding awarded to QMI Ltd. Xing Business Strategy Game Over 60 students worked in teams to develop a business strategy using the Xing strategy game. This all-day event required teams to pitch to a panel of business experts. Flux 2010 Annual National Inter-University Business Planning Competition A team of six students competed against 18 other universities at the University of Nottingham in this annual national business plan competition.

Entrepreneurship Boot Camps Ten Queen Mary students were selected to attend two intensive business development ‘bootcamps’ that involved working with young entrepreneurs, industry experts, business professionals and investors. Entrepreneurship Funding Ten Queen Mary students have received funding from KEEN to take the first steps towards realising their own business ideas. Two of these students, Karen Baratram and Tom Sebrell have built quickly on this entrepreneurial success. Karen won first prize in a ‘Business Angels’ competition held in London for her gluten-free cake products. Tom has forged links with Liverpool John Moore’s University, for his American Civil War tourism business and has since authored two publications and received enquiries from the BBC. LI course booking database The Learning Institute at Queen Mary, University of London, has an online system which is used for browsing and booking courses and events offered both by the Learning Institute and by many other College providers. The booking database is web-based and can be found at: www.learninginstitute.qmul.ac.uk/booking

Registration The first time that you visit the site, you will be required to register. Registration is a simple process that takes a few minutes and you will receive an email with your login details for future reference. Note that we will not use your registration details for any purpose other than managing your course bookings, nor will we pass them on to any third parties. Once registered you will just need to log in to begin browsing and making bookings on to courses.

Finding courses Browsing our programmes of courses is made simple with the inbuilt search facility. All the courses are listed chronologically, allowing you to browse through courses that are coming up. Courses that have already been held, or that have been cancelled, are greyed out.

Managing Your Development When you log in to the system, you can manage all your personal details in the ‘My Account’ area so, for example, if your email address or telephone number changes you can keep it up to date and still receive important messages about your bookings. The ‘My Training Record’ area allows you to review all of the courses that you have attended using our database. You can also see the courses you are currently booked on to, or awaiting a place for. From here you can also cancel your place or you can choose to remove yourself from a waiting list.

New Front Page In October we will be introducing a new welcome screen for the course booking system. From the welcome screen you can; log in to the system as usual; find out who to contact regarding course queries; see some suggestions if you can’t find what you are looking for and quick links to ‘My Account’.

If you want to browse a particular programme of courses or type of course, such as Personal Effectiveness or PGCAP courses, simply select the course type from the drop down menu in the course ‘type’ box above the chronological list, then click ‘search’.

Any Questions

Making Bookings Once you’ve found the course you want to attend, securing your place is easy. Just click on the blue booking icon for the course, and a space will be reserved for you. You will receive an email confirming your place with details of the course time and location, as well as any pre-course preparation that may be required.

LI Short Courses Programme Booking Arrangements 1. 1. The Learning Institute offers an open programme of courses, workshops and short programmes which are advertised through the Learning Institute website and in our Handbook (published each autumn). This programme is open to all staff members in the College and is planned taking account of budget available and training needs that have been identified by heads of departments and institutes, and others in the College. 2. The programme aims to provide activities for all categories of College staff, with many courses and workshops being targeted at specific groups of staff. 3. Bookings for courses offered by The Learning Institute may be made through our website, by email or by telephone. For operational reasons, some categories of staff will need to obtain permission from their heads of departments or line managers in order to be released to attend staff development activities. 4. Bookings for courses are accepted on a first come, first served basis. The Learning Institute will normally acknowledge receipt of a booking within two working days by email (if possible) and we will confirm whether or not you have been booked onto a course or workshop. 5. Sometimes when courses are fully booked, a waiting list will be opened. You will be informed if your name is held on a waiting list and you will be offered a place if one becomes available.

6. Members of the College are not normally charged fees for attendance at courses, workshops or short programmes offered by The Learning Institute. All others will be a charged course fee at the following rate: Half day activity Full day activity Other course fees

7. Exceptionally, staff may have to cancel places at courses because of illness or for operational reasons. Cancellations for other reasons received less than two working days before the scheduled start of a course may incur a cancellation fee equal to the full course fee given above. You may also incur a fee if you do not attend a course on which you have booked, and have not cancelled your booking beforehand. This is to minimise unnecessary wastage of resources. This fee will be charged to your head of department or institute. Departments are free to substitute names of staff attending courses. 8. Staff attending courses, workshops and short programmes can receive a Certificate of Attendance to help them log their own record of continuing professional development.
