Reading Cyber Crime In the past, crime didn’t often happen at home. Crime typically happened on the street and at night. However, with cyber crime, that is changing. Sara was checking her e-mails, when she got a phishing message. It looked like a message from her bank – it even had the bank’s logo and contact details. It asked for her bank account number and a website password. ‘I wasn’t thinking, and I just answered it,’ she says. ‘They stole £300 from my bank account. I felt so stupid.’ Police Sergeant Mike Evans says piracy is also a popular cyber crime. ‘People find music and films on the internet, and they download copies. Normally that’s OK, but it’s illegal to sell the copies – that’s called piracy. Recently we caught a man who was selling over 1,000 pirated DVDs and CDs in a market. We arrested him, and he’s in prison now. Piracy is a serious crime.’ Is it too easy to be a computer criminal? Perhaps! 1 Read the text and answer the questions. 1 How is crime different these days? _______________________________________ 2 What was Sara doing when she became a victim of cyber crime? _______________________________________ 3 Why did she feel stupid? _______________________________________ 4 What is piracy? _______________________________________ 5 What did the police do to the cyber pirate? _______________________________________

UNIT 7
Reading A home for the future How different are futuristic homes going to be? Is technology going to improve our leisure time with big TVs in every room, or our personal safety with video phone security? Or is it going to improve the quality of our daily life with talking robots that do the cleaning? Christine Taylor is a scientist. She specializes in buildings. She says that in fact the most important changes are going to be more ordinary. ‘We’re going to have energyefficient homes which use less electricity and water,’ she predicts. ‘Natural resources are limited and we need to find alternatives. In the future, we’re going to use sound waves for cleaning, not water. Your showers aren’t going to feel the same.’ But this isn’t going to be the biggest change. Because everybody is living longer, future homes are going to be full of technology to help older people. ‘We’re already planning these homes now’, says Christine. ‘The future’s going to be here sooner than we think!’ 1 Read the text and answer the questions. 1 Which three areas of life does the text mention in the first paragraph? _____________________________________________________________ 2 What kind of changes does Christine Taylor predict? _____________________________________________________________ 3 Why are we going to use sound waves for cleaning? _____________________________________________________________ 4 What is the biggest change going to be?
