An 8.27 acre-sized site, it is nestled in a pretty quaint sub-urban neighbourhood along Jalan Padang 4/48, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. It is immediately flanked by 4 houses or worship, which makes it a delicate site, and requires extra sensitivity in integrating the new scheme into the context. It is also within 1km driving distance ffrom Assunta Hospital, thus making the proposed site

“HOW DOES A KAMPUNG LOOK LIKE IN THE CONTEXT OF A DENSIFY I N G C IT Y ? ”

“HOW WOULD KAMPUNG LOOK LIKE IN THE EXISTING SITE?”

From the project aims, I reached the problem statement for my scheme - “how does a village look like in the context of a densifying city?” That famous gotong-royong spirit, the spirit of neighbourliness that makes one feel a sense of belonging. It’s about the celebration of everyday’s slices of life. It’s about fighting the ever-increasing notion of disintegrating urban social structure.

the ruai that makes the longhouse…

LOOKING AT LOCAL TRADITION Ruai is basically the wide internal walkway that runs across the whole longhouse. But unlike the typically Spartan urban corridor which is often

used only as a connector, ruai is the heart of the community where all social forms of relationships, works, religious activities and festivals are carried out. Ruai is also known as the public gallery, and this literal translation into English is what I want to express in my scheme as well.

Once you step out of your house into the corridor, everywhere you see shall be stages that have power to create meaningful connection with your neighbours by stimulating your visual, audio, taste, smell and touch.

These two photos, left is a ruai, right is from a low-cost housing in Penang, show how public realm is used to facilitate social activities, thus enriching one’s daily life. People would just sit around even after they finished with whatever they’re doing, watch people or just sit around, because the spaces are favourable to relax in.

First move is to extend and expand the existing park which is located at the northern part of the site. This is to blur the boundary between the surrounding neighbourhood with the new development so the other residents can interact with the new residents.

Secondly, the central green area is maximized to best support the community in utilizing the facilities. The green is also somehow protected by the blocks so the vulnerable groups can use the space more confidently while still interacting with the surrounding community. The blocks are formed in such a way to comply to setbacks while maximizing the central green zone.

To respond to the immediate low-laying neighbourhood, the blocks height are controlled to be more sensitive to the surrounding.

This level is also accessible by the surrounding community. The red-coloured walkways which is a part of the ruai bleeds to the existing urban fabric and addressing the nodes.

D E R IV I N G E L E M E NT S O F L I F E FROM COMPONENTS OF PJ OLD TOWN Now, to inject the facilities into the scheme. To protect the existing culture and lifestyle of P Old Town, I extracted the elements of life from components of PJ Old Town.

There are 6 elements of life in PJ Old Town – active senior’s lifestyle, welfare, education, religious living, festivals, food spaces and residential. Then I further derived the activities & lifestyle from the components of existing PJ Old Town, and came up with spaces that facilitate the integration of new incoming residents into the existing community.
