THE POWER OF
STYLE
WHAT YOUR CLOTHES SAY ABOUT YOU
By: DeiIra Smith-Collard
5
Often times we don’t realize what you wear can say everything without you saying anything at all. My mother always told me don’t dress for the job you have dress for the one you want. At first my at the time 20 something year old mind didn’t give 2 thoughts of what she meant. I continued to wear my simple business casual attire. I did just enough to get by without breaking the company dress code. I mean, my my work would speak for itself right? WRONG! Even though I was great at my job, I was continually passed over for advancement. I would scratch my head in confusion trying to figure what my missing piece was.
STYLE So I decided to follow my mother’s advice and take my style to the next level. I was pressed and tucked, fitted and heeled and ready for achievement. To my amazement, it worked. My work was noticed and so was I. Doors opened, more opportunity came my way, my clothes now said, I was ready to lead. Don’t mistake what I’m saying, the clothes didn’t make me any better at my job, but they did strengthen my image and reaffirm my ambition and desire to succeed. In the work place you are one of many so the desire to stand out is understandable, but style has power so be careful of what your clothes say about you. Here are 3 fashion statements that can send the wrong message.
1. DISHEVELLED & UNTIDY Being unkept says that your work is the same. Even if your work is not people will associate the way you look with the way you work. It doesn’t matter that it’s not true. Your work can be impeccable but let’s be honest who wants a wrinkled jumbled mess leading their company. The answer is NO ONE! Messy dress = Messy Work
2. Out of Date
Walking into a 2015 professional setting dressed like you just stepped out of 1989 JC Penny catalogue will quickly get you noticed, but for all the wrong reasons. Just because it worked back then doesn’t mean it works today. There is a difference between classic or vintage and just plain OLD! The power woman does learn from her past, but she doesn’t get stuck in it. Classic looks are brought current by adding modern accessories and items. Wearing out of date items says that you are inflexible and out of touch with modern ways and technology. These old clothes scream you may not be able to deal with the ever changing complexity of the business world and life in general. Out of Date = Out of touch with current times
3. Is This Appropriate
Appropriate attire is subjective and dependent on the culture of the company. If you work for a Fortune 500 company or large firm, power suits and pencil skirts may be in abundance in your closet. However, if you are in a creative industry you may have more room for quirky prints and hints of color. Either way just remember you are dressing for a business environment and not for a night out on the town. Dressing for Power and success is partly about understanding what is and is not acceptable. Push the envelop without taking it too far. Choose fitted skirts not skin tight ones and when it comes to tops, leave the plunging necklines for the night time. Inappropriate = Inexperience Your style speaks, let’s make sure that it’s sending the right message.

Hair From the Boardroom to the Bedroom
Power Hairstyles
That Take You into the Night By: Josie Sloan
In 2015, if you were to walk into any boardroom you will see springtime colors with bold prints, beat faces, and pixie cuts. Who Run The World, Girls! This wasn’t always true. We fought for many women’s rights in the workplace to get changes in place. As women of power passion and purpose, I think we got this on lock. So what about home do we have that taken care of? Todd Tucker (Kandi Burress-Tucker husband from Real Housewives of Atlanta) seems to think that women are slipping when we put on satin bonnets on to protect our hair. Most men don’t care, or maybe they just know better than to say anything to you about it. Either way, I want to show you some styles that you can take from the Boardroom to the Bedroom. Just in case.
The “Bob”
The Bob is one of the most common hairstyles among women of all nationalities. Whether you are a woman in the service, business owner, or a stay at home mom, you can most definitely rock a Bob. It comes in many different lengths and styles such as long layers, or short and feathered. The Bob hairstyle can be rather complicated to do on youself. I would suggest that you have your hair professionally done. Trying to hold a mirror and cut your hair can be very tricky. If you cannot chew bubble gum and walk, go treat yourself to a professional cut. Your day is almost over and you get that dreaded “so what you cooking tonight” phone call. You know when your husband or significant other calls you right before you get off of work. Except for this time, he has made plans for you guys to go out for dinner. A quick way to transform your Bob from boardroom to bedroom is to curl it with a flat iron. Take small section of your hair between the flat iron plates. Turn your wrist and slightly flip the hair over as you run the curling iron through it. This will produce soft subtle waves throughout your bob that will drive him crazy.
Hair The Bun
Okay so you hit the alarm one too many times causing you to rush through your morning routine. A quick corporate friendly, yet regal hairstyle is the bun. Add some edge control to the perimeter of your hairline. Brush all your hair into a ponytail and add an elastic holder to put the hair in place. Comb the pony tail out and began to twist it in a circular motion. Then wrap the twisted ponytail around itself to create a “bun” on the back of your head. Either pin the bun in place or use another ponytail holder to hold it. You rushed home to start dinner for your family. You heard that his clients just didn’t act right today, so you know he needs a good meal to make him feel better. The kids are full, fed, and ready for bed. He offers to put the leftovers away. You head to the bedroom to get ready to lye down for the night. He has that look in his eyes that let you know he wants to show you how much he appreciates the meal you made. Simply take your bun down to reveal a soft body wave curl pattern, and let him devour you.
Bold Natural Tresses
Rocking your natural kinky curly spirals in the boardroom is a must. Afros, braids, and other ethic hairstyles used to conform to the rules of corporate. We would relax and straighten our hair just to feel like we fit in. Now we can wear what we like within reason. I’m sure no one will be wearing any of Sheneneh from Martin hairstyles in a business meeting. Hair pins and curl definition products are a must. You can pin it up, down, or to the side; all of these will make a bold statement with your natural locks. As a natural woman, I love to come home and take those pins out of my hair. Just letting my springy coils free gives me a youthful appearance. This always catches my husband’s attention. He will play in my hair by twirling it around his finger. Just being me is enough to get that fire going. Bobs, buns and bold natural tresses gives corporate America a run for their money. It has been a long rode for the working woman, but we are loved no matter how we look when we come home. Home is where we can unwind and focus on our family’s needs. Sometimes that can require you to get down and dirty. So hair has to be out of the way when cooking and cleaning. I can honestly say that whether I have a satin bonnet or not, my husband has not ever said that he doesn’t want me. So Todd Tucker, I need you to find another excuse.

Is He Dating A Dutchess? Photo Courtesy of @DutchessofInk
Love & Relationships Welcome to my first reality TV commentary/article. Where we get to discuss, vent, and gossip about our favorite & not so favorite reality TV stars. I know I can’t be the only one who wants to vent their frustrations about some of this ridiculousness we witness. So, think of me as your homegirl. The beauty of this is, there are just so many shows and topics. The choices will give us endless conversations. What shall we get into with this article? I got it! Now, I am sitting here watching VH1’s reality show Black Ink, in disgust and I hate the direction this show has gone in. Dutchess and Ceaser got me scratching my head like WTH?! When you see all the shenanigans unfold, one can only ponder on the sanity of the main female character, Dutchess and the decline of her fan base. I have grown increasingly disappointed in the type of woman she has portrayed herself to be. I find myself praying Lord, please don’t ever let my son bring home such a woman. The more I meditate on it, the more I want to define “SUCH” a woman. Such a woman is controlling, insecure, narcissist. Mayo clinic website defines a Narcissist as a person with a inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration, and a lack of empathy for others. As a ex/fan and viewer of the show since day one. I have seen her exhibit all these traits. Now, if you are a fan of the show and can identify with Dutchess, are you, yourself a Dutchess? If you are a man, and think her boyfriend is the luckiest guy in the world, are you dating or attracting a Dutchess? In order to answer these questions, we need to take a closer, more in-depth look into the actions of
these people. When the show originally started, it quickly became a fan favorite. It was refreshing. We loved the youth, diversity, and the camaraderie of the cast. Everyone connected with the smart, southern, young lady Dutchess Lattimore who moved to New York City from North Carolina to follow her dreams. For all intents and purposes, she was very likable, in the beginning. What woman couldn’t see themselves in Duchess? Picture it. Young girl navigating her course in the big city, making new friends, starting her new dream job, and meeting a boy. Cue the cheesy, girl empowerment song! At the end of season one, it appeared the fairytale was becoming a reality in reality TV. She got the boy, the friends, the fans, & the popularity. We were rooting for her and the whole cast. Hell, I was practically chanting her name at the end of season one finale. Sadly, it didn’t last long. That chant turned into a scream! By the middle of season two, she was losing her friends, Caesar, her boyfriend and boss was losing respect, they both replaced their popularity for notoriety. Season two emerged the, insecure, manipulative and lying Dutchess. The mean chic who thought she was better than all her peers by constantly reminding us that she was a black, educated woman with a masters degree. Although, one would beg to differ because. Her bad attitude, coupled with her constant, profane and vulgar language suggested otherwise. Once her relationship with her boyfriend, the owner of black ink was established and cemented in the
minds of the minions. Which was actually the word, she used to describe her co-workers and ex-friends. Everyone were now expendable. If she felt you had some influence with Ceaser, or If you didn’t agree with her, and she couldn’t control you. You were considered a threat. She would then proceed to, without remorse, initiate a case prepared by the queen herself, to discredit and sully the name of whoever warranted her wrath. Case and point, when she lied, and started the rumors about her co-
37
workers Teddy and Sassy sleeping together. Sassy did not appear to have a beef with Dutchess. Her crime in Dutchess’ eyes, was Sassy’s friendship with Puma. Puma was an employee of Black Ink and longtime friend of Ceaser. Dutchess assisted in getting Puma fired. Sassy and Puma were best friends. Sassy got along with everyone. Dutchess saw it as her loyalties being divided. Why she thought she was entitled to the same loyalty as best friends is one of the traits of a narcissist. Sassy ended up quitting as a result of
the smear campaign instigated by her former friend. In a article from the website, A Shrink For Men, Dr.Tara J. Palmatier states that an emotionally abusive woman is a bully, who will try to steamroll anyone who disagrees with her. It not just about controlling her reality, but controlling everyone else’s reality, too. I would have to agree. At this point, everyone is starting to recognize the inconsistencies and differences in her personality. However; they are consistent with the behavior of a insecure narcissist. Her actions are a sharp contrast between seasons one thru three. I do believe that VH1 attempted to clean up her deteriorating image by getting the audience to sympathize with her. With alleged life altering events. Such as the miscarriage, the cheating scandal, the tearful ostensible apologies to cast and the heart problems. I am not saying that the incidents did not take place. She just wasn’t credible to me at this point. Also, I will say, as a nurse who has worked in the health industry for over 17yrs, that NO
Love & Relationships doctor would clear a patient for breast surgery so soon after a miscarriage and a supposedly major heart surgery. It seemed like a over exaggerated ploy to get her back in the good graces of the public. However, you can only play nice for so long. Dutchess has continued to prove she does not play well with others. Now that I have given you a brief history of previous seasons, I can start with the current season. Shortly after the premier of the third installment of Black Ink started, we were not surprised to see the old Dutchess of yesteryear re-emerge. Now I’m dumbfounded as I look at Ceaser in awe of how lost he is in this relationship. He is living proof of the old adage love is blind. As I reflect, I believe the part that stumps me is, he has witnessed her actually on camera being caught in lies. There is a public record of her deception and he continues to forsake all his relationships to be loyal to a person who is only loyal to self. Despite all his self proclaimed bravado and street smarts, Ceaser has broken every code of the streets. This new generation would phrase it, she got you looking weak in these streets son! Yet, I do see how Ceaser has arrived to this place of denial. A black man born & raised in the hood, knows better than anyone that the struggle is real. At the beginning of their relationship he was having the typical baby mama drama. Dutchess was there physically, emotionally, and financially. To prevent him from going to jail, She gave him over 2000$ he owed in back child support. In the hood, no one just gives you that kind of money. He was smitten and blinded from that point forward. To be fair to Dutchess, I don’t think she had an agenda or any hidden motives. I believed she did it out of love. Matter of fact, no one will deny that they love each other. I believe it is at this juncture, that their relationship started to become unhealthy. After this selfless act, no one can compete with Ms.Lattimore. She knew it and everyone else knew it as well. We see them collectively start developing the us against the world mentality. We see the general concern of family and friends helplessly watch Ceaser become irrational about all things Dutchess. Everybody claim they want you to keep it real or 100 with them. But that’s not entirely true. What people really mean is I like when you keep it real with everybody except for me. When the people who love you, can’t tell you the truth. You unintentionally set up an atmosphere of mistrust. Ceaser created an environment of disloyalty. He is totally unaware by allowing Dutchess to wreak havoc in all his personal relationships, he is empowering her insecurities. Here are a few suggested evaluation questions to ask yourself from a article on the wikiHow website titled Are You in a Manipulative or Controlling Relationship? Does the person bring out your best, or worst traits? Do you feed each others’ best self, or have your attitude changed to more closely mirror your partner’s, which puts off your family and friends? Do you find yourself apologizing or defending your significant other’s behavior? Finding reasons to excuse it? Do they treat your family
and friends disrespectfully or rudely? It also states that people in healthy relationships have nothing to hide or defend. By partaking in this us against them fantasy, Ceaser has diminished the support of the very people who was down with him from day one. Which is why it is strongly suggested in the article to re-establish your support system. To do that you have to first apologize and admit your role in the breakdown. He clearly is not in that place yet. Ceaser’s inability to be unbiased and objective has permitted his girlfriend to have a power and authority over his personal and professional relationships who did not earn it. He need to set the example with both his relationship and in his business. The goal and intent of this article is not to offend or devalue another woman. It is simply to help my audience, whether you are a male or female to unveil and recognize undesirable traits in a mate and I used their love story as the example. In an attempt to be transparent about my own journey, here are a few of my rules, I personally live by. No matter who you are, and your station in life you should always be leery of people who don’t promote peace in your relationships. If a person is important to you, they should be important to your mate as well. Always be open and honest in communicating. And, to answer one of the above questions, yes in MY relationship WE help each other be better. I don’t pretend to have it all together. I am a highly opinionated woman who loves reality TV. These are my opinions based on my interpretation of the show. My advice is based on time and experience. I have been happily married for 22 yrs. My husband will tell you, this southern girl who has also had issues with control has come along way. At the end of the day, I am, have been, and will always be a hopeless romantic. It’s that romantic in me that believe there is still hope for all the Dutchesses and Ceasers of the world if you allow love to truly be your guide. Be Blessed! If you have any feedback, or ideas you can reach me at kimbob on facebook and kimbob37 on instagram. I look forward to hearing from you. Kim Bob, Independent Woman
Conversations Over Chocolate Milk

By: Tia Griffin
A
nyone who knows me knows I love a good glass of chocolate milk. It brings me to a happy place, and I can get inside of my thoughts and break them down. Just the other day at a seminar, I was lecturing about cultivating relationships, and then the usual Q&A began. I was asked the question: “What is fear and how do I overcome it?” The beginning of my answer was confusing, but very much true. Fear is the excuse you give yourself to initialize a life less lived. Plainly put, fear cultivates mediocrity. We have conditioned ourselves to believe we have to conform to perfection. We have to have this, or we have to have that in order to be considered successful. STOP that right now! We are allowed to be different and imperfect! A study done by Professor Michael Strayer of The University of London says as early as 6 years old, you began to become what you think you are based on the information provided. Cultivating your mindset is where it starts. Write an affirmation that includes the sentences: “It’s okay to make a mistake. I am still present in this moment. Mistakes prove I showed up for my life today. Love is in everything. Forgiveness must become fundamental in my life. I forgive myself as much as I breathe and I extend that generosity to everyone else.” When you begin to say these things out loud, you began a redesign your mind. Change the information provided to you. Always remember that renewing your mind is like learning a new language; it takes studying, practice, and time. How do you overcome fear? Fear is overcome by faith! Faith is the mindset utilized to overcome fear. The affirmations, the change of what you allow yourself to think, hear, or say on a daily basis. Faith is based on what you choose to believe. Do you believe you are successful? Do you believe you can do anything you put your mind to? Do you believe you are worthy of authentic love and attachment? Matter of fact, simply put, what do
YOU believe?! Questions for Tia?

Power…Passion…Purpose.
hese three words are often spoken with frequency but rarely executed with expertise. In today’s what’s in it for me world a person that gives whole heartedly is a person that stands out and a person to be celebrated. A woman who pushes for what she believes, and uses her influence to fuel her passion and complete her purpose in life is the type of woman who can leave their mark on the world, and make a lasting impact for years to come. Candace Ford, wife of retired NBA player TJ Ford, mother of three, entrepreneur and philanthropist encompasses all of these traits. The Houston resident is educated and accomplished. She received both a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Masters in Economic Development. She holds strong beliefs that education helps children reach their goals and become productive individuals. Candace gives Le Charme Magazine a view into her world and answers questions about her life, fulfilling her purpose and how she’s making a difference through Project Beautiful Me. LM: You are a very accomplished and educated woman, of the many avenues you could have chosen, how did this become your passion? CF: My passion for wanting to empower girls came from seeing the need and urgency to develop young girls into educated, confident and extraordinary women. I believe that impacting girls at a young age can affect generations to come, so that was the driving force behind Project Beautiful Me. I was blessed to be around other women who share that same enthusiasm and passion as I do. My team is extraordinary. When a girl sees strength in herself, she empowers others around her and when she becomes a woman, she will empower her children, grandchildren, and those that come after her. Every girl doesn’t have positive role models in their lives so I felt it was my duty to provide that to young girls.
LM: When these young women see you, they see someone with power, passion and purpose, how do you make sure you show that with them and impact their lives positively with each encounter? CF: With each encounter I try to be as real and as honest as I can every time. I want them to see the real me, I want to be able to relate with them and them with me by sharing my personal experiences. I show interest in their ideas and lives and I think that’s what makes the difference. I am very hand’s on with them. LM: When you created Project Beautiful Me what was the purpose and goal of the organization? CF: Project Beautiful Me was created to inspire young girls by building selfesteem through encouragement, empowerment, and teaching life skills.

LM: Do you feel you have achieved your goals?
LM: What tools or programs does your organization use to empower and motivateyoung women?
CF:I feel I have achieved these goals but it is a continuous process. Every year is different and sometimes I face different challenges but in the end I’m always reminded of why I do what I do when I am with the girls. I am dedicated and committed to the mission of Project Beautiful Me and I am so blessed to have a team that is as passionate as I am.
CF:Project Beautiful Me is a taxexempt 501 (c) (3) organization. We developed a Mentorship Program where we provide workshops that are designed to educate equip and inspire young girls to become successful. Our goal is to teach them to love, honor, and appreciate themselves. We have a Beautiful Me Program where we provide prom dresses and a day of
pamper to girls so they can attend their prom despite their economic and financial status. It was designed to help drive donations of prom dresses, evening wear, and accessories to help make it possible for local high school girls to enjoy their prom. We also have implemented the College Tours Program. We aim to encourage and bring awareness to higher education by visiting college institutions. The goal is to empower girls by exposing them to new environments while emphasizing the importance of higher education. LM: Sometimes people define beauty by what they can see on the surface, would you give me your definition of beauty? What would a young woman looking in the mirror see after she had an encounter with Project Beautful Me? CF:Most of the time people define beauty on what they see on the outside but for me my whole perception of beauty changed when I spoke with a blind lady while in college and it changed my whole perception of the word, she said “she don’t see beauty but she feels it”. So for me beauty is defined by a person’s character and not their outer appearance. No one person is the same, so we all should celebrate our uniqueness. After being in one of our programs I hope that the girl looking in the mirror sees that she is unique and special and that everything that God created is beautiful. She will not let TV, social media or society define who she is. Everyone is beautiful in his or her own way.
LM: Giving back seems to be a passion, how do you instill the same gift of giving in your home? CF: Giving back is something that we stress in our household, especially to my children. I want my children to understand that they are blessed but at the same time many others are not in our situation so it’s important for us to do our part. I practice what I preach. When my kids outgrow clothes I make sure they give them to others and when they outgrow their toys I make sure they sort them out and we bring them to a shelter, so that they understand we are giving to someone in need. LM: What do you believe has been your formula for success? CF:I really don’t have a formula for success; I just measure our success on the lives of the girls the organization has touched. I just keep pushing and building relationships with people and organizations to help Project Beautiful Me be an environment that is inclusive of young women in all communities to ensure they lead purposeful, active, healthy, and responsible lives. LM:A woman with Power, Passion, and Purpose has the ability to impact the world. What is your impact or message to the world? CF: My message to the world is for young girls to realize their potential, find their ambition, discover new possibilities within themselves, and approach life’s challenges with fierce determination. It’s all about believing
in themselves, being beautiful inside and out, and being confident in their own skin. Candace’s strength and passion is undeniable and she is indeed fulfilling a purpose by empowering and uplifting young ladies to become successful and productive women.

Trainer and and Owner of Bodied by Bates, is no stranger to the hard work it takes to get in shape. Not only does she train women everyday, she also walked the walk for her own wedding. Her intense and passionate training style will push you to become the best you. READ her tips about getting wedding dress ready! LM:What are some reasons you would recommend working with a personal trainer over someone trying to get fit without any help? BB: Trainers or Instructors have a coaching and encouraging ability about us that is immeasurable! We want to see you succeed and not only reach but surpass your goals. We are able to teach you about your body and how it works, and what it responds to based on your goals. When trying to do all this on your own you may give up or not push yourself to your limit. We are available to listen and analyze your body on a deeper level. LM:Sometimes people don’t have realistic weightloss views. How much time should one realistically give themselves to lose weight? For instance, how much time does someone who wants to lose 20 pounds need as oppossed to someone who wants to lose 50 pounds? BB: Ok, the first thing that we have to “overstand”…yes…Overstand; this is the area right past understanding; is that this weight did not come over night. This has been happening for weeks and maybe even months and it is now visible to you, when you put on clothes that are suppose to fit. Also, it Is visible to others when they see you out and about. I would recommend loosing 15-20 pounds a month. So your realistic goals should be about 2 months for 30-40 pounds and about 5 months for 50-60 pounds. It just may happen sooner depending on discipline and dedication to move your body, eating properly, and getting rest. LM:Oftens times peoples # 1 excuse is “I don’t have time to excercise”. What kind of fitness plan would suggesst to this person? BB: 1 hour is 4% of your entire day and you need less time than that to your move your body effectively. I would tell anybody to JUST START MOVING! Jumping jacks, Squats, running in place dancing etc. during commercial breaks. Parking further away from the entrance of the grocery store. While cooking do lunges or air jump rope. Incorporate it into your everyday live. Find Time.
LM:In addition to excercise, what you eat is also important. What are some nutrition tips that can help startsomeone’s weightloss journey? BB: To help you get started on your healthier nutrition journey lets start with a few things: 1. Cut out red meat and pork dramatically. 2. Increase the amount of vegetables and fruit. 3. Cut out fried foods and simple sugars. 4. Cut out fast food chains Eat real food, fresh food. Shop more in the fresh produce section of the stores. Think about it; what your food looks like on your plate is what it will look like on you. Choose wisely. LM:Can you give us ive of your favorite excercises for weightloss and toning, and why they work? BB: My top five: 1. Squats- They can be low impact; great for toning or high impact; great for weight loss. There are so many variations that are possible, jump squats, plie squats, Sumo squats etc.

2. Track Drills! My absolute favorite. My father introduced me to track and field at a very young age and it transformed my body completely. The beauty of these drills are both weight loss and toning. 3. Jump roping is great cardio and weight loss. You can use a regular jump rope or use a weighted rope. This helps with your arms, legs, shoulders etc. 4. Jumping Jacks is a great way for cardio and weight loss. 5. Last but most certainly not least DANCE, DANCE, DANCE! Dance your fat off! Amazing cardio for weight loss and toning. I believe that a dancer is the ultimate athlete. That is what my company BodiedxBates is about, dance cardio with H.I.I.T inspiration to great music. We focus on lifestyle above anything and the importance of consistency and support.

L1: Hiring a personal trainer has clear advantages to working out alone. A personal trainer will plan an efficient workout based on his extensive knowledge. A Personal trainer will also keep a client motivated by forming a team with the client and therefore keeping him/her accountable for the work.
LM:Sometimes people don’t have realistic weightloss views. How much time should one realistically give themselves to lose weight? Knowledge is Power Know Your Status!
usty winds, cold temperatures and steady rain could not stop fellow Houstonians from showing up and showing out on March 8th, for the 2015 Aids Walk sponsored by the AIDS Foundation of Houston. Volunteers and walkers from all around the city threw on their ponchos, slipped on their rain boots and raised their umbrellas to make the event a great success; and the ladies of Le Charme Magazine were no exception. These ladies volunteered their time working in the incentive tent handing out T-shirts, water bottles and hand bags. Volunteering time is just one of the ways Le Charme Magazine shows their support and commitment to their local community. At the end of the day, the walk raised $487,568 dollars to support local organizations that provide programs and life support to thousands of people who are impacted by HIV/AIDS in the Houston community. Every year over 1200 people in the Houston community become infected with HIV which is why it is critical that we all continue to support such organizations. What is HIV & AIDS? HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It damages the white blood cells that our bodies use to fight infection and disease. Over time it causes ones immune system to become weak and damaged. When this happens, HIV can lead to AIDS (Acquired Deficiency Syndrome). How Big is the Problem? HIV/AIDS does not discriminate against age, race, color, sex, or gender. It affects people of all background, social classes and affiliations; anyone exposed to the virus can contract it. Communities that are subjected to poverty and have inadequate access to health care are at an increased risk. Each year nearly 18,000 people die from AIDS, and researchers have yet to find a cure. • Currently 1.1 Million people are living with HIV infected with HIV each year in the US • 44% of all new HIV infections occur in • Nearly 1 in 5 of those (18%) are unaware of African Americans their infection • Every 1 in 4 people infected with HIV are • Approximately 50,000 Americans become women – 295,000 women living with HIV 29
How do I protect myself and reduce my risk? Statistics show that most people who contract HIV/AIDS were infected either through unprotected sex (vaginal, anal or oral) or through sharing needles or other drug works. HIV is spread through body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, pre-seminal fluids and breast milk. However what most people don’t realize is that you CANNOT become infected by day to day contact in social settings, schools, or at work by shaking someone’s hand, hugging, using the same toilet, sheets, towels, eating from the same bowl or drinking from the same glass. So protect yourself at all times with the following tips: • Practice Abstinence – Ok this may be hard for those of you who have high libidos but trust that this method is 100% effective in preventing the risk of infection. • Limit your sexual partners to ONE– Who said monogamy has to be boring! Spice things up by being creative in the bedroom- candles, hot wax, body butters, and edible undies are all good choices. • Practice Safer Sex- When used consistently and correctly condoms are a highly effective prevention method. Plus, condoms are everywhere and affordable – so why are we always looking for him to have one? It is ok for us to carry them too. • Just Say “NO” Just say No to drugs and sharing needles! • Protect your cuts - Cover your sores or open cuts and keep them away from other people’s blood. Don’t forget to protect your eyes and mouth too!
Get Tested and Know your Status– If you are between the ages of 13-64 get tested at least once in your life. Remember a negative HIV test result “expires” with every risky behavior – in this case you should get tested once a year. If you have never been tested, make a commitment to yourself to know. Many new HIV infections are caused by people unaware that they are infected. But there is good news. Getting tested is quick and easy, and there are many places to get tested: HIV testing centers, health departments, hospitals, private doctors’ offices, and clinics. To get tested you can do the following: Ask your doctor to do the test – or contact a local HIV testing site Call CDC-INFO at 800-232-4636 or 888-232-6348 (TDD) Visit https://locator.aids.gov to find a local testing site If you test negative, you go girl! Make sure you take necessary steps to stay that way. If you find out that you are positive, remember you are not alone. Seek treatment ASAP. There are many organizations that can help you in your area. Treatment can slow down the progress of the virus and ensure the best health for you and a longer time before the virus develops into AIDS. Anyone that you have been sexually active with will need to know your status. At times it may be difficult to talk about, but it’s the best thing that you can do to help others protect their health. If you can’t bring yourself to make that call, you can contact your local health department and they will work with you to contact your partners. They will talk to them about getting tested and you will remain anonymous. *Statistics and data are reported from the US Department of Health & Human Services, Office of Population Affairs, Last Update on 10/19/2012

POOR MANNERS!
FINE AND YOU
When I make a business call, I make it a point to introduce myself and ask for the person who I want to speak with and I expect the same in return. When I receive a business related phone call, I expect the person on the other end to have enough phone etiquette to ask for the person whom they would like to speak with and continue by stating their name and reason for the phone call, anything less is annoying and unacceptable.
I used to date this guy who lacked consideration. When I would ask him how his day was, he would go on and on and on about his day. If I didn’t interrupt him, he would take 10 minutes just talking out loud about his day. After he was finished talking I would wait to see if he would ask me how my day was, after 6 months of failing to ask me how my day was in return, I had to give him the boot.
You can get the dial tone ADVICE SEEKERS I find it annoying when friends consistently ask you for advice. Advice about life, losing weight, love, education, how they can save money etc, especially when you continue to give this person advice because you want to see them do better, yet they never follow any of the advice you give them, but continue to ask your opinion.

Healthy Meal Remix
Chipotle Turkey Tacos
By: Josie Sloan
As women of power passion and purpose, we have a lot on our plate. Literally. If you are like me, once your day job is complete, then you go to your second job: Wife and Mother. We know that this means dinner is on you. You have to make sure that it is delicious, healthy, and most importantly quick. Sure, it is easy to stop by any fast food chain and pick up something, but going to the grocery store you are getting more bang for your buck. Let’s face it, you have to have food in your refrigerator and pantry; so why don’t we take some items that you have and make a healthy meal of it. You Will Need

Low fat Sour Cream 2% Shredded Mexican Blend Che ese 8 Corn Tortillas Olive Oil Flavored Co oking Spray

What’s Going ON
Down There? Today’s modern women are strong, independent, hardworking, multi-taskers. We are mothers, wives, CEO’s, entrepreneurs, nurses, lawyers, journalist and so on, the list can continue forever. In Today’s society, we can do it all & have it all. However; In the midst of doing it all, & taking care of everyone else, we become so busy with life, we forget to take care of ourselves. Just as productive, as we are in every other area of our life, we need to be equally proactive about our health. We can start by educating ourselves about womens health issues that affect us. Let’s face it, A lot of topics are often uncomfortable to discuss and this topic is no different. Such as today’s topic. A quiet but common problem amongst women are Prolapsed Uteruses. As I elaborate on the subject, If you are shy, I hope your refined sensibilities will not be offended by my over usage of the political & correct verbiage describing certain female anatomy. The uterus is a female reproductive organ located between the bladder and the rectum, in the pelvic area. A prolapsed uterus is defined in Tabers Medical Dictionary as a downward displacement of the uterus, with the cervix sometimes protruding from the vaginal orifice. A prolapsed uterus has four degrees of complexity. The first degree being, when the cervix drops into the vagina. The second degree is when the cervix sticks to the opening of the vagina. The third degree is when the cervix is outside the vagina. The cervix is the cylinder- shaped neck of tissue that connects the vagina and uterus. Last, is when the entire uterus is outside the vagina. The fourth degree is when it becomes a health risk because the uterus can then become infected and irritated. This also known as Procidentia, which is caused by the weakness in all of the supporting muscles. Several conditions can be associated with a Prolapsed Uterus such as a herniation of the vaginal walls where the bladder, the small bowel, and the rectum can bulge into the vagina. Depending on the location of herniated area. Pelvic tumors that push the uterus down, multiple childbirths, advanced age, weakening and loss of tissue tone after menopause and loss of natural estrogen, and being over weight or obese, major surgery in the pelvic area are all contributing factors. Other risk factors include excessive weight lifting and being Caucasian.
There are several signs and symptoms our bodies use to alert us of a prolapsed uterus. Watch for difficulty urinating, a lower pulling sensation accompanied with a low back pain, constipation, and painful intercourse, Difficulty walking, a feeling of fullness or pressure in your pelvis, Feeling that something is coming out of your vagina
gate way to more complex and diverse problems that men don’t have to deal with. Ladies, it’s time to adopt a more healthier lifestyle.
As is often the case, when concerning our health, prevention is one of the keys to success. Here is a list of simple suggestions to help combat this growing problem. Start with doing Kegal exercises daily in short 10 second intervals. Start slow, and aim for at least three sets of ten repetitions a day. You do this by tightening your pelvic muscles, as if trying to stop the flow of urine. Kegal exercises help to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which support the uterus, bladder, small intestines and rectum. A high fiber diet with daily exercise helps with the motility of the digestive tract & reduction of weight. Avoid heavy lifting and straining.
Kim Bob, Lvn
Treatment can vary and be as mild as medication, and as extreme as partial or total hysterectomy. Another option is a pessary, which is like a diaphragm that holds the uterus in place. Pessaries do require some maintenance. If experiencing any of the above mentioned symptoms consult your OB/GYN immediately. Yearly well woman exams are recommended for all women of childbearing years. In conclusion, The bible says that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. We know the obvious differences between male & female bodies. Yet, our bodies are more unique. Which opens the

LIVING
By: Chole Leviston May marks the month of Arthritis Awareness, so many Americans come together to raise awareness about this disease that effects over 50 million people. As someone who’s been living with rheumatoid arthritis since the age of 22 I want to give fiction, facts, and forewarnings associated with this debilitating disease. In February 2003, I awoke one morning and could barely get out of bed due to pain that was in my right knee. Thinking maybe I just twisted my knee or slept wrong I continued to get ready for work and went about with my day. Same day midday after standing on my feet most of the day my knees were weak and I noticed my knee was slightly swollen. By the end of the day my knee was maybe the size of a grapefruit. I took off the next day to see a doctor, after seeing a few different doctors none of them could really pinpoint the reason why my knee was so swollen and why the pain was so intense. After being in so much pain for several weeks a friend of my mom’s referred me to this small clinic. One of the first question the doctor asked was did I have arthritis I responded “I’m only 22 years old”. The doctor response was arthritis affects not only old people but babies and maybe in your case young adults. Most Americans don’t associate arthritis with young people. In 2012 the CDC reported 52.5 million adults were affected
33
by this disease. I was examined and blood was drawn for test. I was told I would be notified as soon as the results returned from my blood work. A few days later I received a call from the nurse at the doctor’s office stating that my rheumatoid factor was 1500 and they were referring me to a specialist also known as a rheumatologist. After seeing the rheumatologist and understanding what my body was going through I became depressed and only wanted to sleep. I’m sure the Rheumatoid had something to do with the feeling of always wanting to sleep along with the feeling of depression. 22 and dealing with such a huge thing taking my life crossed my mind on more than one occasion. Which is why having a support team is very important. Thankfully I had God, family and a few friends to encourage me in such a difficult time.
13 years later and 2 knee replacements later and one total hip replacement later, I’ve somehow learned to manage this disease that affects so many people on a daily basis. My objective as a survivor is to educate, enlighten and to empower the men and women that deal with this silent and even deadly disease.
LIVING Let’s first start with the fictions, the main one being that old people have arthritis. Arthritis is not just a disease of old age. Two-thirds of people with arthritis are under the age of 65, including 300,000 children. Another misconception is people suffering with arthritis should NOT exercise at all or not as much. That is the worse misinformation of them all. People dealing with arthritis should stay active and exercise should be a daily routine and if there is any joint swelling you should let your body rest but NEVER stop exercising or constant activity. Your body was made to move if that movement stops a person with arthritis joint’s may severely suffer. Another misconception is that people with RA get cancer. People with rheumatoid arthritis are at a higher risk of getting lymphoma (blood cancer) but risk is overall low. Last some believe that RA isn’t that serious. If you downplay the disease in that time frame joints can quickly be damaged. Having RA increases the risk of having cardiovascular disease as well as lung disease. So can you live a healthy life with RA? Yes you can! The hardest part of the day is waking up with RA. Most suffers wake up with stiffness and pain. So to alleviate the stiffness start your morning out with a warm shower. Afterwards moisten your body with almond oil mixed with a few drops of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is a nat rural inflammatory and for a lot of people its soothes the pain that come with RA. Staying active is important when you have RA. Stretching improves range of motion. Strength training builds muscles that support joints. Cardio boosts your mood and overall health. Aim for 30 minutes of walking or swimming. Swimming is great for RA suffers because the water soothes the joints and allows you to exercise easily because there not so much pressure on the joints. Keep the lines of communication open with your rheumatologist. Document any questions or concerns you may have for your doctor and be open to try new treatments. Most suffers of RA are treated with methotrexate alone. Others who’s RA might be more advanced may be treated with Enbrel or Humira. These medications are used to block TNF alpha, which is a protein that the body produces when there is inflammation. Studies have shown these medications to be effective in RA patients. Getting enough rest is a must. RA seems to take all of your energy at times, so be sure to get at least 8 sound hours of sleep and wake up feeling like you can move mountains. Lastly DON’T GIVE UP! We were all created to live and no matter how tough the fight gets we can’t give up. We can beat this, so let’s fight together. For more information or to donate visit http://www.arthritis.org/
I WIN One Woman’s JOURNEY of
SURVIVAL

Close your eyes and imagine you are beautiful, healthy fierce and fabulous. You are less than a month away from celebrating your 50th birthday and all is well in your home and life. This is the kind of peace every woman works towards and even dreams about, but what happens when the frame that holds your perfect world shatters suddenly? Every woman has a story, this one is one of strength, faith, and perseverance. This the story of Regina Lowery and her battle of survival. When Gina walked through the door, there was something inspiring about her. No words were necessary to feel the positive energy that radiated from her. My spirit is always in search of positive, faith filled people, so when I encountered Gina I instantly recognized this in her. As she took a seat to prepare for her interview and photoshoot, she smiled softly to give me the go ahead for the interview. Because the C word can be a sensitive subject for some, I was at first hesitant to ask her questions about cancer. I timidly started, not knowing exactly how to approach the subject but after my first question she instantly opened up. Regina was ready and willing to share her story and journey with us, in hopes that she my inspire and uplift someone else. Regina was 49 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, exactly 24 days away from her 50th birthday. After giving herself a home exam and finding a small lump, she visited her doctor just to be certain. The news she received next would forever change her world. Gina explains that at first a feeling of disbelief washed over her. I suppose any woman would feel similar but for Gina this news dazed and perplexed her. Gina exercised, ate right, and never skipped doctors appointments. She had done everything right, everything she was supposed to do but somehow this had still happened to her. Gina explains after being diagnosed there was a fear of the unknown. The not knowing and waiting made the process harder for her but the more she began to learn about her condition, the anxiousness and disbelief started to dissipate. Now it was all about a plan of action. Regina was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer.
Her oncologist took the time to explain to her how the treatments would work, what side effects she could have and how long the treatments would be. Regina is currently undergoing Chemotherapy. After her first treatment Regina’s hair began to shed. For Regina, hair was her thing. One thing she says that people always noticed about her was her hair, so when she began to lose it, she wanted to preserve as much of her hair as she could but because of the pain her dying follicles caused she opted to cut it. At that moment she said she was hit with a moment of reality “This is real”. As she continues to speak I notice she talks with ease and is able to recount, the pains she has endured while undergoing treatment. The moment I noticed this I had to know how she stayed so positive, so strong when some would crumble under the pressure. Gina smiles at me, then she exhales and says one word. “Belief” This was the moment that showed me truly who she is. Regina’s faith in God was carrying her through each trial that came her way. She smiled when others would cry, her journey empowered her and there was no way cancer wouldwin. “I Refuse to Give in!” I will continue to Thrive!” Gina explains that she has her moments, but she states that’s exactly what it is, a moment and it will pass. She keeps her mind strong and focused on the Power of God to guide her through. This is Gina’s journey, it’s her story and it’s still being written. Through her different stages we will follow her and watch her WIN!
