Femke and the black hole that swallowed her sock

YOUTH

4-6 JAAR

The first book about black holes for children from 4 to 6 years tekst Watse Sybesma illustraties Diego Cohen ‘Astronomers have seen how a black hole devours a star. There is no cutlery needed and not much in the way of table manners. Furthermore: the astronomers gave the longest burp ever to round off the meal. It’s been going on for over ten years.’ (Govert Schilling, Volkskrant, 17-6-2018) Everyone has heard of black holes, but what exactly is a black hole? Physicists Watse Sybesma and Diego Cohen think the time is right to make ‘black hole’ as much of a household word as ‘star’, ‘planet’ or ‘universe’. They introduce this apparently difficult and abstract topic to young children with the help of the curiosity-driven experiences of Femke and the black hole. Femke’s adventure begins at night, when her sock suddenly disappears through the bedroom window. Femke goes after it and meets all kinds of celestial bodies during the search for her sock. She finally comes face to face with a black hole, the thief of her sock… Her experiences, in rhyme, are intended to be read aloud. When the story is finished, there is ‘more for curious people’, which includes a clear explanation of what black holes are, what happened to Femke’s sock and how it is possible that she got it back (well, almost). As such, the reader is well-prepared to answer any more questions the children may have.

GIFT BOOKS

Thoughts of a toddler TOEN KENDE IK DE WERELD NOG NIET

The world through a child’s eyes. Ricky Koole is famous for musical theatre, film and TV. This is the first book with her illustrations

RICKY KOOLE

samenstelling en illustraties Ricky Koole

- Why do you still have a father and a mother when you’re already grown up? - Why does poo stink, even though it’s fresh? - What do you call something that’s beautiful and ugly at the same time? - I dreamed I couldn’t sleep. - Why can’t I know when I’m going to die? - I feel a little bit like it sometimes smells in the car. - I am romantic about you. Ricky Koole has a cheerful, melancholy child full of good ideas and big lifequestions. She made a note of the best quotes and questions from his toddleryears. Comments that, if you read them all at once, give a good representation of a child learning about the world around him. His lovely observations, the funny misunderstandings and his fear of death make this an extremely personal monologue. You can see him growing older. It is refreshing to look at the world through the eyes of a toddler again. He asks questions we haven’t asked ourselves in a long time.

Ricky Koole is a singer and actress. She graduated from the Academie voor Kleinkunst in Amsterdam. She has since released seven albums, given several solo performances, worked with several theatre companies and made musical shows together with her husband Leo Blokhuis. She has performed in films and TV series’ (including Sonny Boy, De Jurk, CMC, Alleen op de wereld). Every Sunday afternoon she has her own radio programme on NHradio. Ricky organises quarterly services without god in the Rode hoed in Amsterdam. Ricky Koole and Leo Blokhuis have one son together.

A book that will be recognisable for many parents, grandfathers and grandmothers. Singer and actress Ricky Koole painted all the illustrations herself. - I’m as happy as a snail... but then less happy.

My green suit

PHOTOGRAPHY

A book about moral injury Frans Kurstjens

Unique view from within the Afghanistan mission There is increasing attention for moral injury and PTSS as the results of traumatic experiences, in war zones among others.

Mijn groene pak

One of the few books in the Netherlands to express value and recognition to the military and veterans who were confronted with moral injury through their deployment.

E E N B O E K OV E R M O R A L I N J U RY

photography Frans Kurstjens text Annemarie Staaks Frans Kurstjens was an active humanistic counsellor and photographer in Afghanistan from 2005 to 2008. During and after the missions he fought for the mental health of his men and himself, with his camera as an eye witness. In My green suit he tells his story and about the price he paid... As humanistic counsellor Frans Kurstjens took photos at times and in places no other photographer will ever come. From this special position within the army unit Kurstjens constantly reflects on everything he sees and experiences. During, but especially after the mission he finds himself in a treacherous web of moral questions, memories and self-deception. What can you know for sure about what happened out there? His experiences appear to be clouded by his colleague’s traumas and stories. The conscious and subconscious self-deception used by Frans in his attempt to function normally seems to be in vain. It is assumed for a long time that he suffers from PTSS. Years later he hears about ‘moral injury’. He recognises all the symptoms. In contrast to other books about Afghanistan, this one is not only recognisable for the ex-military and those close to them, but also for those who stayed at home. The theme is universal and interesting to anyone who is aware of his own role in the bigger picture. The ‘care-free’ Dutchman, for who news about the mission was nothing more than a newspaper article on page 2, can now experience the story from close-by: personal, stripped of all heroic, political or sensational layers. Honest, open, vulnerable and shameless.

Poland

HISTORY

Not a country of cyclists and vegetarians

tekst Jeroen Kuiper

What’s going on with Poland? Since the hostile takeover of the Law and Justice (PiS) party in 2015, there has been a cutting national-conservative wind blowing through Poland. The former top kid in the class of the European Union refuses to accept refugees, carries out controversial reforms of the justice system and thereby puts at risk tens of billions of Euros worth of European subsidy. Party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski has a mission: the dobra zmiana, the good change. The PiS is committed to the true Pool, the ordinary man: white, family man, Catholic, Polish-speaking. Teraz kurwa my, now it’s our bloody turn! Witold Waszczykowski, the former minister of Foreign Affairs, said in an interview with German newspaper Bild in 2016: ‘It seems like the world can only move in one direction – towards a mixture of different races and cultures, a world of cyclists and vegetarians, who only focus on sustainable energy and fight every form of religion. But this has nothing at all to do with traditional Polish values.’ The political fronts in Poland have fortified in recent years, and the question is whether the PiS can maintain its position of power in the parliamentary elections in 2019. Is Poland, a hundred years after its reclaimed independence, on the way to becoming a liberal democracy? Journalist Jeroen Kuiper travels through his beloved Poland and explains about the complicated background of the shift to the right in Poland.

VERDWENEN VELODROMES: NEDERLAND IN 160 FOTO’S

Unique research into the remnants of the rich Dutch cycling culture

Photography en text Robert van Willigenburg

It all started with a fantastic satellite photo for Robert van Willigenburg. The Amby cycling track near Maastricht, established in 1895 and abandoned in 1930, cannot be seen from ground level, but is visible from the air as the impression of an oval in a field, partly cut off by the A2 motorway. The discovery came at the same time that the motorway would be modified for the new tunnel under Maastricht. The piece of land in question would be excavated to serve as ground depot for the tunnel. The photographer was able to capture images of the last concrete remnants of the velodrome before they were removed.

Robert van Willigenburg (1967) was educated as an all-round journalist and quickly chose the camera as medium. He has worked for Fiets Magazine, Dagblad van het Noorden, the Red Cross and has produced a series of photo books entitled Kat in de Stad.

It turned out there were more of these kinds of remnants all over the countryside. Archive research followed, and the search became a longterm project that took him all over the Netherlands. In the first half of the twentieth century there were more than 160 open velodromes in the Netherlands, usually made of wood, concrete, grass or grit. The sport was particularly popular in the 1930’s. Robert van Willigenburg is has been to all these places and has photographed what can be found there now. Here was a cycling track is a fine example of cycling archaeology and a look back at the rich history of velodromes in the Netherlands.

Dementia with a smile

HEALTHCARE

Clown meets Alzheimer

‘Encounters with a smile for people who have lost their way in the misty world of dementia.’ Arno Huibers text Arno Huibers

Dementia with a smile is an encounter between a clown and people in deep dementia. A meeting without words. People with dementia gradually disappear into a state of mental and social isolation. In the end they no longer have a foothold on life. This makes dementia an extremely frightening process. How extreme is this fear if words and functions lose their meaning? Can you make contact without language? Mime clown Arno Huibers poses this question in his book. The clown meets the person with dementia, without expectations and without plan. But with imagination. They meet each other in their own logic, in an encounter that feels logical, and with eye contact in which a smile is visible. Such humorous moments are small miraculous meetings, even if only briefly. This book is a report of a search for contact, with practical instructions and backgrounds. A book for care-home employees. For caregivers. Family. For clowns in healthcare. And also for people involved in caring for people with multiple disorders. With beautiful illustrations, anecdotes, poems, interviews and photos.

Arno Huibers has performed highly sensitive clown acts in theatres and innovative circuses in Europe since 1980, whereby he searches for the essence of ‘the clown’. Poetic performances. In the early nineties Huibers was a co-founder of the Cliniclowns in the Netherlands. In Romania he established various projects for street children. In 1999 he experimented with subtle clownery in nursing homes, which later led to the establishment of stichting miMakkus; an officially recognised, shor tterm professional education for smile with dementia. His clown work in care homes has inspired clowns to set up similar initiatives all over the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany ever since.
