Green was given a different colour at the end of the last century. Green used to be just green, then it became green left, and now green is healthy and sensible. But how did people treat green even longer ago, in Ancient Times and in the Middle Ages? The size of the population was much smaller and people had never heard of sustainability, but they knew the natural world around them through and through. This book is all about knowledge of plants and where this knowledge comes from. How has man used the Earth and plants since Ancient Times and did they know about their nutritional value or healing properties? Which plants could be used to make organic dyes,
such as indigo, woad (both blue) and madder (red)? Can we use technical research methods to determine this today? Which plants could be found in nineteenth century monastery gardens and what is the symbolic meaning of plants in sacred and secular literature?
Linda IJpelaar is an art historian. Claudine Chavannes-Mazel is professor emeritus of art history of the Middle Ages (University of van Amsterdam).
The Green Middle Ages examines all these questions, with a central role for script and beautiful illustrations taken from numerous medieval manuscripts that are the well-kept secrets of Dutch libraries and museums. Fantasy and reality are sometimes wonderfully intertwined. In first century texts, for example, the mandrake was known for its special properties.

The heart of The Art of Facing Mortality is the canvas reverse side of a painting from 1670, by the Antwerp artist Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbrechts. What was Gijsbrecht’s intention with the painting, other than displaying his virtuosity? Jaap Goudsmit convincingly argues that Gijsbrecht teaches us that death becomes ever more predominant with advancing years. The imagined front of the painting depicts the journey of discovery of the life and the time we spend in the awareness of our mortality – vanitas, a favourite subject of Gijsbrecht’s –, the back depicts the inevitable end. In The Art of Facing Mortality Goudsmit discusses, from the perspective of the
scientist and drawing from literature, highlights of Western art that tells us about life and death. Mantegna, Carracci, Holbein, Ensor and many others are addressed in a book that is designed as a catalogue of a virtual exhibition. The Art of Facing Mortality is a book about art, about literature, about philosophy. With the message: if we are vaguely aware of our mortality – and we usually are – then we also realise that we are alive. And we have to make the most of this life, in the hope that it will be long enough to achieve the goals we set ourselves.
Jaap Goudsmit is a physician, scientific researcher and professor at the Academic Medical Centre of the University of Amsterdam. His most significant research involves deadly viruses. Jaap Goudsmit lives and works in Amsterdam and New York.

War in Ukraine by photographer Pierre Crom is a testimony of the events that took place in Ukraine after the removal from power of the pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych. The photographer visited the country several times between February 2014 and January 2016 and visually recorded the onset and course of the war. On the day of the MH17 disaster, Pierre Crom was already in Donetsk, close tothe place of
where the plane was shot down. In order to visualise the context of the drama, he stayed there for long periods of time and returned several times. War in Ukraine is an extraordinary photographic document that tells the story of the annexation of Crimea, the start and continuation of the war, the MH17 drama and the events surrounding it.

On 1 April 2015, Laura Hospes found herself in the UCP, a psychiatric ward of the hospital, after a suicide attempt. From the very first day she kept a visual record of herself with her camera, because talking was simply too difficult. With her monochrome, high contrast photos she shared her story with the world around her, which helped her to feel less lonely.
The period, that lasted over eight months, resulted in an extended series about a young woman teetering on the brink of a conscious death. Laura decided to make a book of the series, to let the world see and more importantly feel her story. And so the book UCP was created, 1.5 years after this first suicide attempt.

• unique because most of the photos were taken from the unmanned cabin of the train, to which travellers are never admitted. Furthermore, they were taken from within the railway system, not by someone from the outside.
Lenny Waasdorp, visual artist and head conductor for NS (Dutch Railways), has been capturing images of the Netherlands from the train with a mobile phone since 2012. What’s special is the position from which she takes her photographs – at the very back of the train, so that the viewer sees a breath-taking view of the Dutch rail network. This way of working has produced thousands of photos, from which a large selection have found their way into Station to station to
station, in which the rhythm of travelling by rail has been captured in many photos, sometimes dozens per page, sometimes just one. As if a train is gathering speed, stops and then travels further. The photos are testimony to the endlessness, loneliness and rawness of (working on) the railway. A book for everyone with an affinity with the railway, photography, the Dutch landscape, travel and the romance of it. A book like a road movie.
Lenny Waasdorp studied visual arts at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague, Marmara University in Istanbul and postgraduate DNA in The Hague. As a photographer she is autodidact. She uses her photography to examine the medium, analogue and digital.

Associatively, with a great deal of pleasure and true interest in the countries they visited, they gathered the elements. Frans Jozef van Rensch Photography
Frans Jozef van Rensch was born in the Netherlands but has been travelling for his whole life. The photos he has taken on the way reflect his character: engaged, restrained and authentic. His modesty has on every continent opened doors to closed worlds that he shares with us in a soft, almost philosophical way. The people who stand in front of his camera feel that they are dealing with a sensitive artist, not a voyeur. His integrity is so clearly evident that he rarely encounters resistance.
Frans Jozef knows neither glamour nor hypocrisy and reserves a special place for the outcast, the needy child and the desperate beggar. As such, it has become more than a photography book. A demand for attention for the pure yet hard reality behind the colourful facades, from man to man.
After studying law, Frans Jozef van Rensch (1950) trained as a commercial pilot and has worked as a pilot ever since.
Light in the Dusk is a title that fits perfectly with the master of the chiaroscuro.

In the late seventies, Ed van der Elsken dove into his extensive archive to compile a book of his black-and-white photos of Amsterdam, the city in which he has lived with the exception of the years 1950-1954. He often worked in the areas around his house on the Koningstraat, on the Nieuwmarkt, the Zeedijk, Waterlooplein. Atmospheric images depicting the fifties, the

The first book from Ed van der Elsken completely in colour, primarily based on his travels for the monthly magazine Avenue, was released in 1977. The starting point for this book was love, specifically the love between man and woman such as it is experienced all over the world. The focus changed halfway to the struggle for existence, that men and women experience in solidarity (or individually). The humanity and commitment that is so characteristic in Van der Elsken’s
work is still fascinating and amazing which is why this publication deserves a reprint. Just as with the book Amsterdam!, all the original negatives have been cleaned, scanned and meticulously processes using a new technique developed by the restoration studio of the Dutch Photo Museum. This reissue presents Van der Elsken’s work in the very best quality.

Ik puber.
Adolescents struggle with a tricky image. If anything is said or written about them, it is usually in relation to problems. I’m in puberty. shows that the world of the adolescent is far more multifaceted. In I’m in puberty. adolescents speak for themselves. Furthermore, they are depicted in all shapes and sizes without judgement. What is striking is just how resilient these young people are in their attitude to life, often despite the situation in which they find themselves. This makes a lasting impression.

Photographer Ellen Martens uses her camera to capture the moment when an adolescent lets down their guard, allowing us a glimpse inside. In the interviews they are given the chance to tell their stories. Image and text combine to give an impression of the adolescents of today, of their families, friends, love lives, finances, music, appearance, status, sadness, ideals, future, and so on.

Out of the picture tells the story of the father of Simone Engelen, who was fired after twenty years of employment; victim of a reorganisation. A man in his fifties, left behind with frustrated feelings of futility and failure. In order to make peace with the past and to restore faith in his own self-worth, he decided to take time away from everything that was important to him. Away from family, friends, and business contacts. Out of the picture. He spent two months in Bali, to think about things in isolation and to put things into perspective. A time to be inspired and to harness new energy.
Complemented with e-mails to Simone and her photos of continuing life back home, Out of the picture has become a personal and emotional document in which her father searches for answers. Perhaps it will help others, who find themselves in a similar situation, to realise that there is more to life than work. ‘I believe that my father’s unusual sabbatical demonstrates a combination of courage and love. My parents’ unconditional trust in each other and a strong belief that – regardless of the setback – the will to survive will result in something positive.’
Simone Engelen (1988) graduated from the Royal Academy for Visual Arts in The Hague and is currently studying for a master degree at the AKV St. Joost in Breda. Her areas of focus during her study include the changing, often personal, narrative identity.
During his time in Bali he kept a photo diary, parts of which are included in the book.

Five years ago a group of designers pointed out that the potential significance of design within our society was being insufficiently recognised. Design was associated only with styling or beauty. Few were aware of the possibilities design had to offer in identifying the problems within society and to help solve them. The group decided to create a platform under the name What Design Can Do! in order to bring to the attention of both professionals and the wider public the capacity of design to solve problems. The platform, centred around a two-day conference in Amsterdam, appeals to

Since then, hundreds of designs from all over the world have been reviewed, of which 31 brilliant ones have been collected together in this book. Armando made his first bronze sculpture in 1988, a long arm measuring over a metre. It was the beginning of a series of around 150 different works in bronze that, with intervals, have enriched his oeuvre until today. The form of the image is striking. The arm is not a natural representation of an arm: thicker and thinner parts alternate to form the crude shape of an arm, which thanks to the presence of fingers, can be recognised as such. The method Armando uses in his images is unique. It is the search for a balance between recognisable and unrecognisable images, a balance between the personal and the general, between the physical and the mental, and representing this. He does this through blurring personal, recognisable elements so that they become widely understandable. The
only way to achieve this with bronze is to play with the surface definition, straight contours are unacceptable. This method can be seen everywhere in his work, from his texts that never quite reach a conclusion, his use of grainy Nazi propaganda films whereby running people in a landscape are insufficiently identifiable as conqueror or conquered, the paintings that suggest movement by painting them as a photographer ‘out of focus’ and finally his bronze sculptures that have more or less the same approach. Armando, all sculptures provides a total overview of the art of sculpture within Armando’s oeuvre, beginning with his first untitled art installation in the Stedelijk Museum in 1955 up to and including his most recent work. The time is ripe to honour artist and graphic artist Jaap Schreurs (1913-1983) with a publication. His life spanned two terrible world wars and numerous ideological conflicts. These did not fail to move him. Jaap Schreurs was ‘captured’ between the legacy of The Hague School and the emergence of the Cobra movement. Artistic trends tumbled over each other and the battle between abstract art and realism seemed relentless. Of course he was completely aware of what was going on. The influence of artists like Picasso, Modigliani and Morandi is unmistakable in his work, but he made no concessions in his artistic views and remained loyal to realism during his artistic career.
AUTUMN 2016
Schreurs did not feel the urge to go to the barricades for this. He fought battles in his studio: his deepest feelings and beliefs came to the surface in his artworks. And they still hit the mark, even more than thirty years after his death. Jaap Schreurs can be characterised as an artist who consciously sought the sidelines. There is actually relatively little known about his life. The stories of his contemporaries paint a picture of an amiable, caring person who was quiet, educated, spiritual, adverse to dogmatism, artistically passionate and gifted. Although he caused a furore at a young age and received rave reviews in newspapers, he shunned publicity.

Guus van den Hout works as an advisor in the field of cultural heritage and is a guest curator of international exhibitions. ‘The work of Gam Bodenhausen presents a world in which the incomprehensible is no longer frightening, but simply a way of looking at something. Commonplace and grand, psychedelic and down to earth. In the series Grey Horizontals the visible reality intertwines with a world in which man, beast, rock and plant, structure and chaos cross straight through each other. In soft grey pencil drawings a universe develops that seems as overgrown as it is organised, as dreamy as it is sober. Without judgement or dualism the images in Grey Horizontals present a new perspective on the world around us. With a mild and almost languid rhythm a dimension unfolds before the
viewer in which things take on a new shape and beauty, and in which the relationship between them changes and yet is also selfevident. In this world we recognise the things that we indeed clearly feel, but are not always able to see or articulate.’ (Cornelie Samsom) This book arose from an intensive collaboration between the artist, designer and writer. It includes an introduction by Arno Kramer, curator of the Drawing Centre Diepenheim. The first part of the book Liquid Debris is comprised of text and images that delve deeper into the work and oeuvre of Bodenhausen. In the second part of Grey Horizontals, a conscious decision was taken to include only the illustrations. This creates a special visual experience.

Visual artist Paul Bogaers (1961, Tilburg, the Netherlands) likes to describe his work as ‘thought photography’. Making use of a medium that particularly excels in showing the world as it actually looks, Bogaers has been searching for years for ways of using photos to express an inner world. So, photographing the invisible – how does that work? Bogaers has developed his very own method. He begins with collecting, rather intuitively, photographs from very different sources, such as amateur snapshots, postcards, clippings from books and magazines and other existing images. Together with his own photographs, which he usually takes without any preconceived idea, all these
AUTUMN 2016
images form an extensive collection that serves as a reservoir for Bogaers’ associative experiments. On the table, on the ground or on a screen they are given the opportunity to form surprising, marvellous or sometimes even impossible combinations, such as ‘the chance encounter of an umbrella and a sewing machine on an operation table’ by Comte de Lautréamont. A selection of twenty-seven image combinations, originally printed on blackand-white glossy paper and displayed here in duotone, offers an exceptional cross-section of the surreal oeuvre of Paul Bogaers in recent years.
38
Association and suggestion play an important role in the work of visual artist and photographer Paul Bogaers (Tilburg, the Netherlands, 1961). In combined images made from his own photos, found photos, postcards and other existing images, he shows the viewer surprising new connections and meanings. Associations that generally go unnoticed behind the façade of the commonplace and trivial are also revealed in Bogaers’ independent pictures.

Like a string of DNA, the series’ on paper are seen in relation to the large-scale installations in this second monograph by Ton Boelhouwer. Ton Boelhouwer prefers to speak of the working rather than a work. He refers to the intensive moments of action that break open the image, generating a rhythm and a structure in time. The viewer does not stand opposite the work, but is included in it. The book will be released at the same time as the solo exhibition by Ton Boelhouwer in the

Strength through interaction Hans van Beek. Architect text Hans van Beek en Marcel Teunissen
Hans van Beek architect Kracht door wissel werking Interaction is a key concept for architect Hans van Beek, who founded the architect’s bureau Atelier Pro together with Sjoerd Schamhart and his colleagues Cees Nieuwenkamp and Ernst Verheij in 1976. Interaction with the Earth, the elements, the earth’s inhabitants and their conduct, but primarily with the surroundings and with the employees of Atelier PRO. The book presents a chronological overview of Hans van Beek’s most important developments and projects before and during Atelier PRO. The layout of the book is also based on interaction. The author Marcel Teunissen allows clients and prominent architecture critics from then and now to have their say, but first and foremost Hans van Beek himself provides context and depth to the projects. He uses intermezzos to take the viewer behind the scenes of the bureaus Sj. Schamhart, PRO and finally Atelier PRO. He tells the stories that cannot

be deciphered from the spaces and buildings, but that were defining in their creation. Crosslinks from a different angle show what more the book has to offer. There are connections between numerous buildings that are not always immediately visible in the chronological overview. Once again, it is often about crucial decisions, but on the design level. The overview is marked by the first and last major project: the ground-breaking, experimental housing complex Couperusduin in The Hague (1971-1976) and the Meander Medisch Centrum in Amersfoort (2005-2013), an international milestone in healthcare architecture. In between lies a rich body of work that was created with great enthusiasm. This oeuvre moves between small and large, renovation and new build, transformations and extensions, city renewal and urban redevelopment, whereby buildings are constructed in both historical environments and in new areas. 43

in collaboration with the Straatpastoraat, The Hague Compiled by Mariët Herlé and Carolyn Wiersum
Meals for large groups are often prepared – in schools, camps, in youth hostels, for refugees, but also for jubilees, anniversaries etc. More and more amateurs are cooking for large groups of people, so it is becoming more interesting to share recipes, shopping lists, budgets and cooking methods. A group of international volunteers in The Hague cook for the homeless. They are happy to share their experiences. The power of Cooking for Crowds is that the authors cook for large numbers of people, but not using the methods commonly used in the hospitality industry, with lots of half-products and a great deal of preparation in advance. Cooking for Crowds cooks like you do at home. It offers three-course menus with the
key words healthy, fresh and low budget. The pleasure in cooking splashes from every page. Cooking for Crowds is the first book with recipes from all over the world for 125 people or more. As well as recipes it also offers lots of useful facts, such as: - how long does it take 5 people to peel 25 kilos of potatoes? - how long does it take for a pan containing 30 litres of water to boil? And general tips for buying and preparing, laying out the kitchen, planning, stock management, safety and hygiene.
Mariët Herlé is an ex-teacher of communication. Carolyn Wiersum is a British expat and copywriter. Both are cooks for the Straatpastoraat Den Haag (The Hague Street Ministry), where volunteers cook for the homeless.
A must for everyone facing the challenge of cooking a healthy, fresh and affordable menu for a large group of people.

‘Do you remember them? Ministers from the purple cabinets, members of government from Lubbers II or Biesheuvel I? “Oh yeah, Wil Albeda, he was there too! Minister for Social Services in Van Agt I.” People who enjoy such aha-moments will love Servants of the Crown. In the past years, Fjodor C. Buis has photographed all living government ministers – it turns out there are 114 of them – from 23 post-war cabinets. The oldest? Gerard Helders, Minister of Foreign Affairs in Drees IV and Beel II. Helders, just like Els Borst, did not survive to see the publication of the book, but passed away in 2013 at the age of 107. From the mouth of every minister or ex-minister Buis drew a short or long memory. What did you actually enjoy about being a minster? the photographer asked VVD celebrity Wiegel. “Not much”, he answered, “but it was the only way to become an ex-minister”.’
Fjodor C. Buis (1968) studied at the Academy for Photography in Haarlem. Since 1994 he has worked from his Studio Burgwal in Haarlem as freelance photographer for various clients, such as NWO, Atlas Uitgeverij, Greenwheels, Adformix and various designers. Buis likes to give his portrait and reportage photos that little bit extra using contemporary digital image manipulations. Alongside his freelance work he also works on his own projects that have culminated in a book about ‘Sporters met een bijnaam’ (Sportspeople with an Alias) and a series of portraits of female Dutch singersongwriters (Lijfliedjes).

The way the Netherlands commemorates today is very different than a century ago. The Ritual Landscape of being born, dying, commemorating and remembering loved ones will also be surprisingly different in the future. People migrate and evaluate along with the major societal shifts, from collective to individual and back again. The trusted Dutch urban backdrop and green countryside are too evolving rapidly. A pluralistic editorial team was given the communal question: ‘How do we commemorate?’. How do we deal with the phenomenon of death and our dead? How do we greave? How do we do this in relation to our faith, beliefs or intuition? Do we use our freedom to perform the rituals of grieving, saying goodbye and processing our feelings

The kaleidoscopic approach covering numerous topics has been made easily available with a detailed table of contents and an extensive index. BEKROOND

Foto omslag Huismeester Pieterskerk Photo cover Concierge Pieterskerk
The photo series Guardians of the City represents the story of the people who live and work behind the scenes of the city. The guardians of the city determine its shape. None of them realise that they have this power, as they’re continually forced to focus on their own passions, duties and quests for survival. Recording the personal stories of these anonymous people reveals the true identity of the city. Photographer and columnist Rob Overmeer worked on this series for a whole year as Leiden’s city photographer. A full-page spread, consisting of a photo and a column of some 300 words, was published in the Leidsch Dagblad every week. The whole series has been brought together in this book to form a gripping tale about the true soul of a city. Rob Overmeer (1971) is based in Leiden. He has a wide variety of publications, photo columns and advertising campaigns to his name.
