compilation Frits Gierstberg (curator Nederlands Fotomuseum) collaboration with Anneke Hilhorst text Frits Gierstberg, Loes van Harrevelt (curator collections Nederlands Fotomuseum), Katrin Pietsch (restorer Nederlands Fotomuseum) The Nederlands Fotomuseum manages the complete archive of Ed van der Elsken’s negatives and slides and has recently successfully completed the enormous project of restoring 42,000 colour slides by Van der Elsken. As such, the colour works of one of the most influential Dutch photographers has been safeguarded for the future. This achievement will be celebrated with the retrospective exhibition Lust for Life | Ed van der Elsken in colour and a comprehensive publication about his works in colour. Photographer and filmmaker Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990) gained global fame with his black-and-white photography. For a significant part of his working life, however, he worked in colour. He began this in the early fifties during his stay in Paris. In the late sixties he even switched almost completely over to colour for several audio-visual pieces and in his travel reports for the weekly publication Revu and the monthly Avenue. His most important books in colour are EYE LOVE YOU (1977), Hallo! A new Ed van der Elsken (1978) and Adventures on the land (1980).
Frits Gierstberg is an ar t historian, critic and writer and works as curator at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam. Gierstberg was endowed professor of photography at the Erasmus University Rotterdam from 2006 to 2010. He is currently also Visiting Tutor at the Piet Zwar t Institute in Rotterdam. He has compiled various exhibitions and his work has been internationally published. Loes van Harrevelt is an ar t and architecture historian and works as curator of collections at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam. Katrin Pietsch is a photo restorer at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam. She developed a treatment method for cleaning all 42,000 slides without causing fur ther damage.
This is the first comprehensive overview of Van der Elsken’s works in colour. It follows his development as a ‘colour photographer’ and places his colour photography in an (art) historical context. As well as space for relatively unknown and never before published photos, there is also attention for the restoration of the 42,000 slides carried out by the Nederlands Fotomuseum between 2016 and 2018. format 24 x 28,5 cm size 256 page’s bound design Kummer & Hermann release May

tekst Rose Dodd vertaling Elisabeth Smalt Louis Andriessen is the Netherlands’ foremost composer of contemporary music. Writing to Louis Andriessen: Commentaries on life in music surveys significant works from Andriessen’s career. The book will be substantial in its commentary on the span of his work, with contributors from the UK, the Netherlands and the US contextualising his music from a European critical perspective, linking outwards to American minimalism, so too surveying his international importance. It will be in the English language. Louis Andriessen has exerted influence not only as a teacher at the Koninklijk Conservatorium, Den Haag but also internationally in the expanse of works presented. Celebrating his eightieth birthday in 2019, former students, now also significant voices internationally, and contemporaries join together to write to Louis Andriessen in a book of critical reflection and celebration. Amongst those writing will be Donnacha Dennehy, Rose Dodd, David Dramm, Anthony Fiumara, Ron Ford, Christopher Fox, Liz Haddon, Yannis Kyriakides, Jan Nieuwenhuis, Ian Pace, Martijn Padding, Johanneke van Slooten and Julia Wolfe. Designed by Joost Grootens, the visual presentation within the book will comprise letters from Andriessen’s personal correspondence with the iconic American mezzo-soprano Cathy Berberian, music materials and programme booklets, musical score excerpts and archive photos, all in lush presentation.
Based in the Netherlands, Rose Dodd is a composer of instrumental/electronic music; as well as a freelance writer and reviewer about contemporary and experimental music. Initially studying at Dartington College of Arts; she continued composition studies at the Koninklijk Conservatorium, Den Haag with Diderik Wagenaar and completed her PhD in 2006 with Christopher Fox. Dodd’s music is widely performed in Europe and Scandinavia; she has a par ticular affinity with the music scenes of Norway and the Netherlands. In 2016 she published Perspectives on the Music of Christopher Fox: Straight Lines in Broken Times (Routledge: Ashgate imprint). Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2018: male hegemony unmasked (GonzoCircus blog: 8 Okt, 2018). 2019 sees publication of Writing to Louis Andriessen: commentaries on life in music (Lecturis).

Daan Roosegaarde
DESIGN
A century of change, 1900-2000 Exhibition Groninger Museum, June 2019 Winnaar of Dutch artist of the year, the INDEX Award and the London Design Innovation Medal Named by Forbes as one of the top 100 change-makers This is the first extensive publication available about Roosegaarde’s versatile practice text Nico Daswani, Fumio Nanjo, Carol Becker
Dutch artist, Daan Roosegaarde, is one of the most innovative artists to emerge in the past decade. His sculptures and installations, made in collaboration with a team of engineers and designers, aim to create better conditions in cities and to make difficult areas habitable again, by rethinking processes and upgrading urban structures. At the core of Roosegaarde’s practice is schoonheid, a Dutch word that stands both for ‘clean-ness’ and ‘beauty.’ It is this that has informed some of his most popular public projects, including Waterlicht (a virtual flood that shows the force of water); Smog Free Project (a large outdoor air purifier that turns smog into jewelry), and Smart Highway (an interactive road that charges throughout the day and glows at night).
Nico Daswani is the head of arts & culture at the World Economic Forum in Geneva. Fumio Nanjo is the director of the Mori Ar t Museum in Tokyo. Carol Becker is Dean of Faculty and Professor of the Ar ts at Columbia University in New York.
New York Times: Motivated by a general fascination with the world and “irritation” at the status quo on air pollution, the 38-year-old Roosegaarde has an obsessive passion for inventing things to improve the natural environment. Guardian: Whether in his native Netherlands or China, where he maintains a second studio, Roosegaarde’s work has always responded to urban environments. Fortune: Daan Roosegaarde is the Dutch boy wonder of innovation, who has won international praise with a range of spectacular technological projects. Dezeen: The Dutch artist is lighting up the world with his nature-driven social design.

Happy (49%)
PSYCHOLOGY
Coralie Vogelaar
HOW WELL DO YOU RECOGNISE EMOTIONS? You can see Happy (49%) as an old-fashioned game, whereby the winner is the best in interpreting emotions – and can best compete with the computer. The book is simultaneously a reference work for your own complex emotional world. concept Coralie Vogelaar
The American Paul Ekman discovered that there are six basic emotions recognised all over the world: joy, sadness, anger, surprise, fear and horror. If these emotions are clearly present, everyone recognises them. Human expression is so incredibly complex, however, that even those who have been trained in it often have difficulty in assessing the mood of another. So-called emotion recognition software analyses our emotions by breaking down our facial expressions into the separate muscles that are responsible for making them and translating these to percentages of the six basic emotions. On the initiative of artist Coralie Vogelaar, actress Marina Miller Dessau separately trained all of her 43 facial muscles in order to be able to optimally express emotions on her face. The numerous possibilities are explored by tensing these muscles in random combinations – with the help of a computer. Emotion recognition software then analyses them and identifies the predominant basic emotions.
Ar tist Coralie Vogelaar (1981) systematically looks into mechanisms of valuation within our visual culture. In doing so she uses research methods like deep learning, software for eye-tracking and emotion recognition. Her work has recently been exhibited in places including ZKM Karlsruhe, Kassel Kunstverein, Transmediale, FOMU Antwerpen, MOTI Breda, Impakt Festival, V2 & MU Ar tspace
The photos of Miller Dessau’s face expose the complexity and undiscovered movements of the face and represent an exploration into how a computer looks and could look at our emotions. At the same time it is a game for the viewer: are we equal to the computer, and do we instinctively recognise the feelings of another?

photography Rebecca Fertinel text Hans Theys
In august of 2015 photographer Rebecca Fertinel (°1991) was invited to a wedding by her friend Tracy Tansia. Here, Fertinel was introduced to the warm, unabashed life-approach of the Congolese community in Belgium and the Bantu concept ‘Ubuntu’: that you really only become human when you are connected to everything and everyone. In Fertinel’s photographic documentary, the concept of Ubuntu seems to intertwine with the desire to belong to a group and maintain a group identity in a changing environment. Focused on the joy and the ritual and not on a need for a perfect venue. This project wants to place the viewer inside an environment that most have experienced at one time or another for a wedding, party or a wake. A place where the emotions are what is important and the flaws of the room overlooked. Everyone in a similar situation has experienced the desire to connect with certain traditions on the one hand, while simultaneously feeling different and no longer seamlessly connected with the old culture on the other hand. ‘Ni congolais, ni belge.’ Within the group, the individual feels strong, but outside the group he or she will feel lonely and deviant. We need each other. See, everyone is looking for a place in life. That is the beauty of Ubuntu.
Rebecca Fertinel (1991) was born in Romania but grew up in Belgium. She has always had a great interest in art and has found a way of expressing herself throughout the medium of photography. Her work includes a wide range of different subjects, with a keen interest in personal views and connection with others. Life itself and in particular people’s sensory capabilities is what triggers her. Her images capture the specific ways in which people act, perceive, think or feel in varying life events.

In his paintings and poems, Wouter Stips searches for that which is lost in the course of a lifetime: childish innocence, wonderment, unbridled imagination. From different perspectives he highlights what it is to be human and universal values such as Love and Trust, Life and Death, Something and Nothing. Oh oh oh I’m so happy is the seventh poetic art album by Wouter Stips, in which he tackles all stages of life. The essence of this book is that life has so much joy to give, but we sometimes have to make an effort to achieve it. The wonderful combination of image and text directly touches your heart. The poetic art albums have quietly become a series, of which earlier publications have now become collector’s items.

Ode to the Netherlands’ smallest museums
CULTURAL HISTORY
(and the people who made them possible)
Ode to the Netherlands’ smallest museums will be released during National Museum Week, from 8 to 14 April. The presentation will include an exhibition of the top museums from the book. With an essay by mathematician, text writer, sport columnist and comedian Jan Beuving photos en text Maartje ter Horst essay Jan Beuving The Netherlands is home to dozens of tiny museums. Some are no bigger than the owner’s living room. Who is familiar with the Electro Radio Nostalgia Museum, Jannie’s Cow Museum, the Hourglass Museum or the Dutch Roof Tile Museum? Photographer Maartje ter Horst became fascinated by the Netherlands’ smallest museums and their owners. She selected 20 photogenic museums, located all over the Netherlands, and created beautiful, often moving images. The stories of the museum owners have been recorded with humour, but also with great respect. Together with the photos they form an ode to the people who invest their time, money and energy in their passion, that they are so keen to share with us.
Maartje ter Horst (1990) is a photographer. With her camera, she constantly searches for insights into the lives of ordinary people. She is fascinated by what we humans do to make every day wor th living. How we can lose ourselves in our work and our hobbies, how we try to distinguish ourselves from others and which clubs and traditions we devise to give our lives a little more cachet. This all comes together in the photo project about the Netherlands’ smallest museums.
As well as a beautiful photo book, Ode to the Netherlands’ smallest museums is a call to us to visit these and other mini museums. Although you may not find them in hip city guide books, and you can easily walk past without noticing them, the Netherlands is full of them. Not only their collections, but also the owners could steal your heart.

Shinji Otani
Tentoonstelling Design Museum Den Bosch van 13 oktober 2018 t/m 17 februari 2019 photography Shinji Otani idea Erik Schilp text Pepijn Reeser For a long time, the Netherlands was known as a statue-less country. While princes and heroes appeared in bronze and stone elsewhere in the streets, such honour here was reserved only for the select few. The small number of statues that did exist were primarily tourist attractions. This has not changed over the years, but the Netherlands is by no means still a country without statues. They can be found in almost every community, in all sorts and sizes, and they matter. Discussions about who does and does not deserve a statue and what it should look like, are the order of the day. Statues are now a serious business in the Netherlands. Is that what you see when you look at them? This is the question that Japanese photographer Shinji Otani (1972) took on his travels in recent years. He travelled all over the Netherlands, from Groningen to Maastricht, via Assen and Zundert to Vlissingen and Amsterdam. He took pictures of statues in relation to their surroundings everywhere he went. Sometimes they were the radiant centre point, more often they were somewhat hidden – we are still rather uncomfortable with hero worship in the Netherlands. Otani gathered together his very best photos for this book. It includes a refreshing and stimulating view of iconic, beloved and controversial statues from all over the Netherlands. Historian Pepijn Reeser has written an introductory essay about how Dutch people treat their statues and has added a brief explanation to each image.

Supported by the Mondrian Fund and the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund tekst Katia Kruppennikova
The Book of Happiness and Sadness will be Irina Birger’s first monograph. It will focus on her works made during the last six years and will also include projects from the past ten years. The publication will contain numerous drawings that were never or seldom exhibited, documentation of installations and performances, video stills and animation stills will be included as well. The different projects will be placed in a way that enhances their connection. The Book of Happiness and Sadness will present the act of drawing as a self-contemplative study, and aims to provoke a similar contemplation in the viewer while leafing through her personal story in images. Graphic design Rimini Berlin will create a publication with a strong presence. Bold typography and different coloured pages will accentuate Birger’s works. The numerous details in the drawings will juxtapose the monumental appeal of her other works, while enhancing their connection. Independent curator Katia Kruppennikova will write an essay for the monograph that examines the core of Birger’s work in connection with significant dilemmas in our society today, such as the group versus individualism and interdependency.
Irina Birger was born in Moscow. She studied at the Bezalel Academy of Fine Ar ts and Design in Jerusalem and at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. Aleksandra Gaca
DESIGN
Textiles
Commissioned by De Lakenhal in Leiden, Aleksandra Gaca made a wall-hanging for the auditorium in the renewed museum, inspired by the work Counter-composition in dissonant XVI by Theo van Doesburg. The result can be seen in the museum from spring 2019.
Textile designer Aleksandra Gaca was a pioneer in 3D woven textiles and grew to become an expert in the field of textile design, production and use. For her textiles she looks to both centuries-old weaving techniques and the newest technology. Her feeling for materials, colours and patterns offers plenty of scope for experiment. The work is characterised by abstract architectonic concepts such as order, rhythm and repetition. She experiments with selfdeveloped bindings and special kinds of thread, with the final result being a series of intriguing fabrics on the cutting edge of art, design and architecture. Her work always shows a beautiful balance between craftsmanship and innovation. Her specialisation is designing and putting into production innovative fabrics that have an acoustic effect as well as an aesthetic value. All these aspects are covered in a monography that does justice to Aleksandra Gaca’s work both in form and materials.
Aleksandra Gaca (1969) was born in Łόdź, the hear t of the Polish textile industry. This is where she developed her fascination for textile, design and structure. After secondary school she moved to the Netherlands and began studying textiles and fashion design at the Royal Academy of Visual Ar ts in The Hague. But her greatest passion is designing functional textiles using both old and modern techniques. Her designs have been winning prizes for years in the Netherlands and abroad and have been included in various museum collections. She recently received the Dutch Design Award 2018 in the category ‘Best Product for her custom’ for the threedimensional woven textile BLOKO for the Renault SYMBIOZ.

text Frederike Huygen, Bob Witman and Anthon Beeke
Dutch Posters, 1960-1996, A Selection by Anthon Beeke (now a collector’s item) was released in 1996. There has been no other overview book of Dutch posters published ever since. Time for part 2: Dutch Posters 1997-2017. A total of 150 designers were invited to contribute and they together submitted 3,500 posters. Around 350 of these posters have been included in this book. The selection was made partly based on presenting the visual story told by the images that fortify each other or react with each other. This overview of twenty years of Dutch cultural posters provides a beautiful representaiton of the development of the Dutch poster. The poster today holds a very different place in out streetscape than 22 years ago. Frederike Huygen (author) has placed the posters against the background of the developments in the profession and of the medium. Bob Witman (author) examines the criteria used by Beeke in his selection process. It is partly this personal choice that makes this an interesting book, as Beeke’s criteria are sharply formulated in relation to legibility, concentration, topical position, aesthetic and emotion. This project was initiated by Saiid & Smale.
Anthon Beeke (1940-2018) was a graphic designer. He was adjunct director at Total Design and established studio Anthon Beeke in 1981. He is known for his noteworthy posters for Zuidelijk toneel Globe, Toneelgroep Amsterdam, Holland Festival, the Theatercompagnie and the Kunstrai. Many of his designs have received awards. Beeke’s recognitions include the H.N. Werkmanprijs, the Grafische Cultuurprijs and the Frans Banninck Cocq Penning from Amsterdam city council. Tropical Hair Salons
PHOTOGRAPHY
Laurent Muschel
photography Laurent Muschel text Rolf Sachsse Laurent Muschel has travelled all over the Tropics, photographing the intimacy surrounding this special world of hair salons. The series took off in the “Afro part” of Brussels called Matonge (the name comes from a surrounding in Kinshasa) and then continued in East and West Africa: Addis Abeba and Shire (Ethiopia), Abidjan and Grand Bassam (Ivory Coast), Accra (Ghana), and Banjul (The Gambia). It expanded to further tropical areas: Dhaka (Bangladesh), Havana (Cuba) and Jericoacoara (Brazil). The journey was accompanied by many short cuts and extensions along the way…
Laurent Muschel (Strasbourg 1968) studied phylosophy aan de Sorbonne in Paris. He lives and works in Brussels with his wife and three kids. His work was exhibited in Belgium, France, Germany, the USA and in Asia. A previous published book by him is Back to the Museum.
Laurent Muschel likes to photograph the small details and gestures, inviting us to come closer and explore further. At the back of these hair salons, people are eating, talking, sleeping, or watching football matches on small TV screens. The multitude and diversity of the scenarios in Laurent Muschel’s pictures are part of his narrative principle. By doing so, he opens up an often overlooked world. But in reality, hair is the pretext for something else: a pure photographic pleasure where a pair of scissors becomes more than a simple tool without soul. Through his pictures, the photographer transforms the business of hairdressing, which appears at first glance as “banal”, into a fetish ceremony. He turns the salons into churches, the chairs into thrones, the counters or tables with their hair dressing accessories into altars. For this is how the spaces in Laurent Muschel’s photographs can be viewed; the photographer kneels down before beauty and its creation, an admiration with which we join. It all started with a fantastic satellite photo for Robert van Willigenburg. The Amby cycling track near Maastricht, established in 1895 and abandoned in 1930, cannot be seen from ground level, but is visible from the air as the impression of an oval in a field, partly cut off by the A2 motorway. The discovery came at the same time that the motorway would be modified for the new tunnel under Maastricht. The piece of land in question would be excavated to serve as ground depot for the tunnel. The photographer was able to capture images of the last concrete remnants of the velodrome before they were removed.

Many dozens of faces of members of the House of Orange-Nassau adorn the walls of the Royal Palace Amsterdam. The oldest por trait from around 1550 shows Anna van Egmond, the first wife of Willem I ‘the Silent’. The most recent is the inauguration portrait of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima from 2013. The por traits from the Royal Collection provide an overview of the members of the Orange Dynasty through the years. From equestrian and

formal por traits to family and children’s por traits, these are no spontaneous ‘snapshots’ but carefully thought-out scenes full of symbolism, in keeping with a long tradition of the royal por trait. The catalogue focusses on the different por trait genres that can be seen in the Royal Palace Amsterdam, whereby the function and the corresponding representative and symbolic characteristics of the royal por trait hold a central position. A photobook with two stories. Oblivious takes you into the hidden world around us. A world of all ages but this time placed in the sixties. Everlasting tells the story of the beauty and tragedy of a marriage. Where kindred spirits find each other and lose each other. About the passing of time over a lifetime and what remains. 30

In 2013 Antwerp was ‘European city of Spor t’. Photographer Hans van der Meer was commissioned to record amateur football in the region. During ten weekends, he worked with a team of three assistants on the assignment, not only photographing, but also acting as a director. Hans van der Meer also worked in his famous style of European Fields (2006) on a film with humorous observations of the Antwerp amateur football. Just as with the successful Fields of Holland (1998) Jan Mulder wrote a text, in this case about his memories of the Bosuil stadium and the professional football scene in Antwerp in the sixties.
From the A of accessories to the Z of ‘zzz’ of the dream that is fashion. Piet Paris draws the essence of 26 fashion concepts as glamor, elegance and haute couture. Georgette Koning explains in a humorous and poignant way what it is all about. All texts are illustrated with a letter. The letters not only reinforce the text, but are also an illustration in themselves. The A of Accessories says why, according to Prada, bags sell better than dresses. The P of Paris makes it clear why Paris has been a fashion metropolis since the seventeenth century and what cookies have to do with it. The K analyzes the fashion Karl Lagerfeld in a razor-sharp manner. Anyone who knows the well-known illustrations by Piet Paris knows that these are true fashion works of ar t in themselves.
