Photographed during wartime is about part of the oeuvre of photographer Annemie Wolff (1906-1994): a hundred rediscovered rolls of film dating from 1943, depicting portraits of 440 people, one plaster mask, one cat and three dogs. Included with the photos is a ledger, organised by month with the names and addresses of Annemie’s customers and what they paid. Tamara Becker and An Huitzing have identified more than three hundred people in the photographs and tell their stories from the moment that Annemie’s first customer, the half-Jewish toddler Robert Ferro arrived on 14 January 1943. Annemie saw a cross-section of her neighbourhood appear before her camera; Jewish and non-Jewish, young and old, happy and sad, Amsterdammers and refugees.

Why did people go to Annemie Wolff’s house on the Noorder Amstellaan (Churchill-laan) in Amsterdam-South to be photographed in the middle of the war? Many wanted a passport photo for a forged identity card. Others needed photos to prove that they were actually ‘Aryan’. However, most photos were made as memories, to give to loved ones or as keepsakes. There are lots of baby photos: despite everything, life went on during the occupation. The contradiction between the peaceful photos and the horrifying circumstances is the leitmotif through the book, up until the last customer on 24 September 1943, the bodybuilder and German soldier Karl Barta.

Tamara Becker concluded her Research Master’s in History in February 2014. During her study she was an intern at Ons Amsterdam. She worked on the project ‘Save a portrait’, about Studio Merkelbach, at the Stadsarchief Amsterdam. An Huitzing is an anthropologist. She has worked at the UvA, the Wiardi Beckman Stichting and Rotterdam city council. In 2015 Becker and Huitzing edited the catalogue for the open-air exhibition on the Churchill-laan and in Westerbork with photos by Annemie Wolff and Katrien Mulder, entitled War children of the Rivieren neighbourhood.

The concealed lives of Annemie Wolff, a film by Rudi Boon (Selfmade Films / Joodse Omroep)
The German immigrants Annemie and Helmuth Wolff were significant figures in the development of photography in the Netherlands during the thirties. This is largely unknown due to the untimely death of Helmuth and the modesty and taciturnity of Annemie. This biography presents an image of the importance of them both. The two refugees rapidly developed themselves in their new homeland. With the magazine Kleinbeeld-foto, lectures and exhibitions, they made miniature photography popular to a wide audience in the years preceding the war. Helmuth ended his life in 1940. His book about colour photography remained popular until well after the war. Through his emigration, and especially his early death, his impressive constructions in Munich were also forgotten. His name was obliterated from architectural history. This book makes an attempt to restore this. SPRING 2017

The description of the work of Annemie, who learned photography from Helmuth, begins with their collective work before the war and her work for women’s magazines. The travel reports from home and abroad show the entrepreneurial attitude of both. Special attention is paid to the 100 rolls of film depicting photos from 1943, which Annemie saved but never publicised, and her role in the resistance. A great deal of attention is paid to the publicity photos for the Amsterdam city council, the harbour, Schiphol and other firms, which Annemie considered to be the core of her oeuvre. Annemie and Helmuth Wolff tells the story of two eventful lives, marked by turbulent times.

Simon B. Kool is a photographic historian. While compiling an exhibition about 125 years of the North Sea Channel in 2002, he discovered photos by a certain Ms. Wolff in the Amsterdam city archive. After research, it turned out to be the archive of Annemie and Helmuth Wolff, consisting of around 50,000 photos, and owned by heiress Monica Kaltenschnee, granddaughter of Annemie’s neighbour. Kool has been researching the life and works of the couple ever since.

een literaire wandeling in de verbeelding en werkelijkheid van zijn Geldropse jeugd
In his little bedroom on the Hulst in Geldrop, the six-year-old Albert Egberts dreamt in ‘De gevarendriehoek’ that God gave him the sun. It is a golden mirror; the symbol for talent and election. In reality, this talent grew to become the magnetic oeuvre of A.F.Th. van der Heijden. There is a special fascination for the ‘Geldrop’ layer within this universe. This layer, present in ‘De tandeloze tijd’ and ‘De requiems’, reflects the childhood and early youth of the writer in a fabled version. The literary walk passes through locations and scenes from novels and requiems. The walker’s experience includes quotes from these stories. They tell of childhood dreams, alcohol scandal, love’s piquancy, mother worship, fatherly trouble, boyish friendship, youth suffering; all embedded in the polyphonic recreation of a country of origin.
404429
Spread through the compaction of novels, the walker passes the biographic places of the author; the houses, schools, cafés, streets, squares where he grew up and developed until the age of twenty. The book begins with a sketch of the life and work of the author. The core is the description of the walk, condensed introductions to scenes from a novel and broad quotes from his work. Furthermore, it also includes youth photos of the writer and images of ‘his’ Geldrop. The cover includes a foldout map of the walking route.
The walking book is compiled by the work group Van der Heijden walk Geldrop. Members of the work group are: Renny de Bruyn Jos Geevers Leonie Josiassen Marianne Menting Han Roijakkers Mecheline van der Velden

A spectacular book about the design duo Ravage, released to mark their major retrospective exhibition in Museum Arnhem, with lots of images and an array of contributions that do justice to the many disciplines practiced by Ravage. Trend forecaster Li Edelkoort has known the duo since they studied together at the art academy: ‘We’ve known each other since we went to the art academy together. A whole lifetime already. During this time I’ve seen the Ravage oeuvre develop and a dream become reality, the materialisation of a daydream. The coming together of talented, blond, long-haired men has led to an unprecedented solidarity and fusion, and the emergence of a distinctive

idiom of using the same stories over again in order to tell a different story; stories of war and peace, victims and dictators, old dames and young guys, crowned heads and bloated citizens, acclaimed officers and bandaged soldiers. It immediately became clear that the art direction of the fashionable Clemens Rameckers would be on par with the visual talent of the more traditionally focused Arnold van Geuns; that the inventiveness of one would fuel the insight of the other and that the unbridled curiosity of both would lead to a special life, a visual life’s work.’ Ravage, illustre inconnu is a beautiful, overwhelming overview of the work of Ravage from the seventies until today.

The West-Berlin artist Johannes Grützke (1937) is the first of his peers from free Germany that did not want to belong to the avant-garde from the second half of the last century. He started out as a figurative artist and illustrator. Just like in the Netherlands, the ‘progressive’ artist in the old Federal Republic was regarded as taking a stand, overcoming artistic and disciplinary boundaries. Grützke, however, refused to adapt to modernist mores. ‘Kunst ist nicht modern, Kunst ist immer’, according to Grützke. Grützke made his breakthrough in 1967 with work in a distinctive modern-realist style, often large in size, meticulous and with attention to detail. From the early eighties they gradually became smaller, freer, more emotional, physical and painful, especially in his self-portraits. The art of painting itself became more and more a form of expression,
Monument der Tröstungen, 1971 (detail)
instead of style or anecdote: ‘Nicht vor dem Malen denken, Malen ist Denken!’ In his own words, he was led by his brush, not vice versa. As an outsider, Grützke always preferred to remain an observer, albeit of a different kind. His dramatic and burlesque physical theatre on a large scale betrays compassion. His paintings are populated by clumsy men and sturdy women in impossible baroque poses. They are often group portraits, a kind of contemporary historical pieces, whereby the artist himself also walks through the image. All characters play a role in his sketches. He comments on collective neuroses, female power, group pressure and man as a lonely yet ignorant being, who he depicts with amused compassion in all his glorious madness. Grützke has painted very little in recent years due to health reasons.

In all his portraits Urban Larsson (1966, Stockholm) emphasizes the importance of painting to model. He thereby combines a strong naturalism with animation. By evoking a mood or emphasizing the character of the portrait subject, his paintings transcend the outer world. His landscapes, painted outdoors, and his still lifes are also characterized by a harmonious, balanced composition and a subtle play of light and shade. It is not only the work process but also the use of materials that links Urban Larsson with the

The Swiss Magnum photographer Werner Bischof (1916-1954) worked as a photojournalist for magazines such as Life and Picture Post. He created an impressive and diverse oeuvre in the two decades preceding his early death in 1954. Bischof’s fame began shortly after the end of the Second World War when he reported about the desperate people in affected cities in Western Europe, where he recorded, as he himself said, ‘the face of suffering man’. As such, he found himself in the battered Netherlands in November - December 1945.
He arrived in Limburg, travelled through to Amsterdam, via Schiphol to The Hague and Scheveningen and finally to Zeeland, where he recorded the flooded Walcheren. The photos taken by Werner Bischof in the Netherlands, of which twenty are being published here for the first time, present a poignant image of the ruins and suffering that followed during the cold months after the initial euphoria of liberation ebbed away, and the large scale rebuilding had yet to begin.
Wim van Sinderen is a senior curator of the Fotomuseum Den Haag and conservator of the photography collection of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.

The ninth photo book from documentary photographer Martijn van de Griendt. A book about the girl Maria from Eindhoven, also the photographer’s birth town. He spoke to her in 2007 in the City Hall Square (Stadhuisplein) in Eindhoven and then took polaroid photos of her through the subsequent nine years. Due to her special story, the photographer decided to buy a film camera and thus also to record moving images of Maria. Ten years later there is a film and a photo book. Martijn van de Griendt: ‘I met Maria in the street in Eindhoven when I was taking photos for my photo book Smokin’ Boys Smokin’ Girls, about youths who smoke cigarettes. But Maria
(18) was smoking cannabis. I talked to her and quickly felt that there was a special story within this photogenic girl. She was adopted from Brazil as a baby, experienced problems with her adoptive parents, ran away from home and was placed in a youth institution at the age of eleven. She became involved with drugs, made the wrong friends and became a mother at 16 years old.’ Van de Griendt photographed Maria on polaroid because of this unique, vulnerable material. It fits with Maria’s story. He did not want to focus in on all the problems, but on Maria the person.

Documentary photographer Martijn van de Griendt (Eindhoven, 1970) attended the School for Journalism in Utrecht and graduated from the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague in 1997. Van de Griendt records our rapidly changing Western society in thematic series’. He has been photographing young people all over the world for the past twenty years. You could say that this theme has now become his speciality. In 2014 the series resulted in a solo exhibition in the Rotterdam Kunsthal, including accompanying photo book: Forever Young. The exhibition received four stars and a very favourable review in the Volkskrant.

There is perhaps no more controversial piece of clothing in Western Europe than the niqab: the facial veil that only exposes the eyes. It is banned in many countries, and everyone has an opinion about it. This was also the case for photographer Saskia Aukema. It was quite intense when she once, by chance, had two niqab-wearers in front of her lens. But at the same time it sparked her curiosity; who are these women who choose to wear something that provokes so much discussion? What do they find important, beautiful and funny? Aukema visited dozens of niqab-wearers at home and abroad, and was surprised. The women were so much stronger, more colourful and more nuanced that she at first expected. Although Aukema had the almost impossible
task of making portraits of people who do not want to show themselves, she succeeded little by little in uncovering a world that has always been hidden to most of us. Interview fragments give the images added depth. Professor Annelies Moors (University of Amsterdam) wrote the epilogue. Veiled is a beautifully designed and stimulating document about an extremely topical subject, and offers insight into a choice that for many people is difficult to understand. A first section of the photo documentary won a Zilveren Camera in early 2016, was nominated for the SO2015 Awards in the category portrait and selected for the New Dutch Photography Talent 2017.

Saskia Aukema studied photography at the Fotovakschool Amsterdam and Dutch at the University of Leiden. The photos in I loved my wife were taken on the site of 16 Austrian psychiatric institutions. Tens of thousands of children were murdered in these institutions during the Second World War. Killed because they were considered to be incurably ill. The costs of keeping them alive were too high for society, an opinion that was reinforced with films and other propaganda directed against people who had nothing to offer society. Euphemisms for the murders were ‘mercy death’ and ‘euthanasia’.
Provisions for the institutions and care for the victims of hereditary illnesses were seen as working against natural selection. The costs of this had to be borne by healthy workers, and money was taken from them that could otherwise have given them a better life. The photos in this poignant book are interspersed with historic documents and stills from propaganda films.

The first collection comprises a unique series of vintage, hand-painted French military jackets, shirts and bags, made by Jasper Krabbé. Every piece is a unique, wearable piece of art and tells its own story, partly visible to all, partly only to the owner. Drawings or poems have been stitched into the fabric or into the lining and worked in such a way that the garment is ready to wear.
T-shirts come with hobo symbols. Hobos are American vagabonds who travel illegally through the country on cargo trains and have developed their own language of symbols in order to communicate with each other.

Inspiring and exciting travel and climbing adventure about six Dutch women who, without the help of other climbers or local Sherpa guides, ascended a peak in the Himalayas of over 7,000 meters. The women’s expedition of 1988 was a unique event and not without danger – rough weather, avalanches, glacier crevasses, rubble and steely-hard ice. Combining the ascent of the Chamlang with today’s knowledge gives the story extra
depth and topicality. As well as the physical performance, it is about the interaction within the climbing team. What is it like to take extreme risks and completely depend on each other? Is an all-female expedition really different than a mixed or all-male team? Is there mutual empathy and solidarity or do the participants remain loners with just one goal: the top.

They find their way into six thousand schools, reading corners and homes, in a country where there are hardly any books anymore, due to the
violence of recent years, so that books were lost or destroyed on purpose. When Roror’s bed flew into the air by Miranda de Haan became the winning story of the competition ‘Write For Afghanistan’, organized by the National Postcode Lottery and Save the Children in the Netherlands. The story has been translated and is part of the book package for Afghanistan and is included in the book, De Rode Koffer (The Red Suitcase) together with 19 other stories from the final.
