text Jeroen Stumpel
Carel Willink (1900-1983) is one of the greatest Dutch painters of the 20th century and the most important representative of magic realism. His work is generally known, but was not always appreciated in the period that abstract art was the norm. However, he has always had loyal supporters, including the writer W.F. Hermans. They were right: today Willink is part of the canon of art history.
Jeroen Stumpel is emeritus professor of iconology and art theory at Utrecht University.
Willink himself described his work as imaginary realism: painting the imagination as realistic as possible. That is a very apt description of his paintings, which are characterized by perfect technique and a flawless sense of detail, which serve the threatening, mysterious, unreal atmosphere that characterizes most of his works. The viewer can judge for himself in this overview from the early twenties to the late eighties. Art historian Jeroen Stumpel, specialized in iconology and art theory, examines the deeper meaning of Willink’s work, which has many layers

Charles Donker’s etchings ‘Fumbling with zinc, acids and presses’
text Ed de Heer and Charles Donker
Charles Donker will reach the age of 80 next April. In his work of the past forty years he did not let himself be led by the daily issues and has kept away from the turbulent developments of art. He has always remained aware of his place in the visual arts and the inexhaustible vitality of it’s tradition. He made an in-depth study of the masters of yore. Their presence is manifest in his graphic oeuvre, but there’s no sign of epigonism, of idealess repetition. The influence of the old masters has been completely absorbed, processed and made subordinate to his own artistic objectives. Donker’s extensive knowledge of the art-historical tradition goes hand in hand with the pursuit of technical perfection. He commands respect for the great spontaneity and freedom that his work shows: nowhere the viewer becomes aware of the complexity of technology and the effort that the artist had to make to reach the result. It is Donker’s great credit that he has never been dragged by his technical virtuosity, but has always made it subordinate to his artistic intentions. By consciously sticking to tradition, Donker’s unique talent could thrive and flourish. His many impressive works enriched our lives, influenced our way of looking and have conquered a unique and permanent place in art history.

Leven en kunst na Bergen-Belsen Life and ar t in the aftermath of Bergen-Belsen
• beautiful and moving book about a Holocaust survivor who, thanks to his ar t, was able to deal his past and give meaning to his life text Dawn Skorczewski, Karen Maandag, Sieg Maandag
Sieg Maandag (1937-2013) was seven years old when he was released from the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. His father was killed there, his mother survived camp Beendorf and was reunited with him. A photo of Sieg walking along a row of bodies in liberated Bergen-Belsen on 9 May 1945 shocked the world when it appeared in Life magazine. Sieg’s family were diamond dealers. After the war he lives a rich life. He learns the craft of diamond, travels the world, falls in love, sings in night clubs, paints hundreds of paintings and makes ceramics. He also becomes a father and joins an ashram, a Hindu community.
Karen Maandag is the widow of Sieg Maandag. Dawn Skorczewski teaches English at Brandeis University in Waltham (Massachusetts) and is currently a visiting fellow at VU University Amsterdam. She regularly publishes on the Holocaust.
This book focuses on the paintings and ceramics of Sieg Maandag. His work cannot be viewed separately from his trauma of Bergen-Belsen. Maandag’s art is troubled and beneficial at the same time. Like all good art, the paintings and ceramics make a deep impression on the viewer who is unfamiliar with the background of the maker. Sieg Maandag has often commented on his own work and his comments are included in the book. That makes this monograph an unique document.

• for lovers of the wadden • poetic atmosphere book, a wonderful gift
text Gonnie Tijs, Arno Haijtema
For this book, Gonnie Tijs selected the works inspired by Vlieland from her many miniatures (gouaches). Here and there she provided them with short poetic texts. The book is an ode to the beautiful island with pages steeped in nature.
Gonnie Tijs (1955) was born in Raalte and grew up in Luttenberg. She studied Dutch language and literature at the Free University and painting and graphic design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. She combines her ar tistry with graphic design of the Volkskrant (par t-time).
The wind, birds, sand, water and a single tree. People can only be seen vaguely on the beach or in a boat that swings up and down on the waves.
She doesn’t have a driver’s license. She does almost everything on foot, by bike, by bus or by train. The nice thing about it is that there is so much to see, hear and smell along the way. And you never take along more than you can carry. A delay or missing a train or bus can be annoying, but at the same time it gives an opportunity. Olivier Heiligers
text and illustrations Olivier Heiligers
Sequences contains more than 60 stories told through drawings of objects. The book with satirical observations is beautifully designed and invites you to merge with a smile. Illustrator Olivier Heiligers came up with the idea for the book when he walked through Amsterdam with his nephew in the pram and saw the different means of transport people use to move around the city, depending on their age. First they are pushed, then they push their children and at an old age, when they can no longer move themselves, they are pushed again.
Illustrator and visual artist Olivier Heiligers (1982, Eindhoven) lives and works in Amsterdam. He makes drawings for the VPRO Gids, De Volkskrant, Het Parool, The Washington Post and Damn Magazine, among others.
This is how Heiligers’s Sequences came about: telling visual stories by placing nine drawings of objects in a sequence. By only showing the objects, he could tell all kinds of stories. From observations of daily life to socially critical stories and parodies of popular culture. It is ultimately up to the reader to combine the objects and finish the story in their own way.

Jasper Hagenaar
tekst Robbert Roos
Souvenir shows an overview of recent paintings by visual artist Jasper Hagenaar. Hagenaar mainly makes small, intimate paintings. They are representations of ceramic vases, tropical landscapes, toy dinosaurs, cowboys and other childhood idols, locked between the narrow barriers of the canvas. They look like watery fragments of memories that are part of a personal story. Very familiar in a strange way, such as that old smiling portrait photo that has been on the mantelpiece for years at home. (Rieke Vos, 2016) Robbert Roos, director of art hall Kade Amersfoort and art critic, wrote a text for the publication in which he describes the most important themes and developments within the work of Hagenaar.
Jasper Hagenaar (Tilburg 1977) is educated at the Academy of Visual Arts Tilburg and the Rijksakademie Amsterdam. He exhibits his paintings nationally and internationally. In 2012 he won both the jury and the public award of the Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst. In 2016 he was selected for an international mentoring program from the Mondriaan Fonds. Hagenaar lives and works in Utrecht.
In 2012, Hagenaar was the winner of both the jury and the public prize of the royal prize for free painting. The two winning works are the starting point of the book, which then shows the development of his work up to and including 2019. The book shows a wide selection of paintings supplemented with room overviews on which the specific monumental way of exhibiting that is typical of Hagenaar is shown. Context – creative studio took care of the design of the book and took this monumentality as a starting point for the design.

Think twice before you commemorate Critical thoughts about the planned Holocaust Names Monument
CONTEMPORARY HISTORY
editors Petra Catz , Abram de Swaan, Herman Vuijsje
The discussion about the planned Holocaust Names Monument in Amsterdam was mainly in the news because of the legal battle that was going on. The content of the arguments was hardly discussed and the underlying ideas about what commemoration is all about even less. In this book, sixteen people formulate why they are not happy with the design at the chosen location in the city. Among them artists, architects, scientists, people from the Jewish community and local residents. The criticism also concerns the way in which the plan for the monument came about. Who do you involve in creating a meaningful monument and what does the commemoration of the Holocaust and all those who perished look like in the future? The questions, arguments and considerations in this book are highly topical and will remain so as long as there is reason to commemorate.

Barwerd van der Plas
text Barwerd van der Plas
From 2001 the Dutch photographer Barwerd van der Plas has been working in the team around the world famous fashion photographer Mario Testino, known for his publications in magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair and for his advertising campaigns for large fashion houses such as Gucci, Chanel and Versace. At the time, Van der Plas stood alongside celebrities such as Kate Moss, Julia Roberts, Penelope Cruz, Ben Stiller, Scarlett Johansson, and Emma Watson. Van der Plas made photographs of these special moments and their setting. These unique photos were soon noticed. Not only by Testino itself, but also by his clients. In addition to the conceived advertising campaigns, the emergence of social media required authenticity and transparency. These “behind the scenes” images have a completely different character than the posed images for clients. Van der Plas made his own images without having to worry about an end result desired by the client.
Barwerd van der Plas (Aduard 1969) living in Amsterdam, has been a professional fashion and architecture photographer since 1998. He has been working intensively with Mario Testino since 2001 and regularly takes photographs in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Madrid and Monaco and other world cities. He is now internationally renowned as a behind-thescenes photographer.
Van der Plas became Testino’s official Behind-The-Scenes photographer and in the last ten years he has had the opportunity to create a beautiful oeuvre with images that give a rare insight into the production process of Mario Testino. The photos show the top of the fashion and film world in an intimate and honest setting. Van der Plas has an artistic, almost contemplative view of this hyper-commercial world. An approach that yields tender photos that would do very well in photo museums. The photos were brought together for the first time in a book. English format 23 x 32 cm size 208 pages bound

75 FACE STORIES
JODEN IN NEDERLAND VAN 1945 TOT 2020
photography Julie Blik text Els Quagebeur 75 years ago the Netherlands were liberated and the Second World War ended. To mark 75 years of freedom, Els Quagebeur and Julie Blik, commissioned by the Centraal Joods Overleg of the Jewish organizations in the Netherlands, present the stories of 75 Jews in the Netherlands. The short, personal stories and portrait photos are arranged by decade from 1945 onwards. The concept of “passing on the baton” ensures a great diversity; the portrayed Jews are of different ages, from all walks of life, pious or liberal, known and unknown, male, female or child. 75 FACESTORIES is about life, work, school, study and about love, dreams and ideas. It is about life today, in this time, and in the last 75 years in which the Jewish community rebuilt an existence in the Netherlands. The shadow of the Shoah will not disappear, but the community has been looking ahead since the war. 75 FACESTORIES gives, in a special way, an insight into the diversity of Jewish people in the Netherlands.

• Nominated for the Kassel Dummy Award 2019 • Winner of the Unseen Dummy Award 2019 Amsterdam photography Moritz Jekat
This book appears on the occasion of winning the Unseen Dummy Award, 2019. One of the oldest, constantly changing social constructs in the world is family. It has been evolving since its inception, and many differences depend on which cultural background it originates from. The contemporary, globalized world offers us an opportunity of finding and living as a family across borders and continents in a multinational construct where different ideas of family are allowed to come together.
Moritz Jekat (Herdecke, Duitsland, 1987) lives and works as a professional still life and documentary photographer in Berlin. He graduated in communication design in Potsdam in 2018
German-born Moritz Jekat, his partner (USA/Japan) and his stepdaughter decided to start living together as a family in 2017 after they met in Los Angeles in 2016. Three very different individuals and evolving identities came together in a small flat in Kreuzberg, Berlin. Finding himself in a parental role in an alternative family situation while dealing with their migration, inspired him to start this project. “Non ya” (“Non of your business”) is a narrative about a coming together of multiple cultural heritages and family ideas, a new home, decipherment of the otherness, and the establishment of the common.

Between 1989 and 2001, Hester Doove photographed internationally renowned pop artists for Muziekkrant OOR and other magazines. Often the circumstances were not too favorable: most of the time there only were a few minutes for the photo sessions, backstage or in and around hotels. But her love for music and the musicians she met were a major motivator and an important creative source of inspiration for making these portraits. Music Portraits shows a selection of 60 pop artists from this period including Seal, Barry White, Elvis Costello, Marianne Faithfull, Tori Amos, JJCale, John Hiatt, Suzanne Vega, Joe Jackson, David Byrne, Lenny Kravitz, Susanna Hoffs, Robbie Robertson , Lisa Stansfield, Chris Isaak, Sonic Youth, Youssou N’Dour, Thom Yorke.
Hester Doove (1966) has been working as a photographer since 1989. She specializes in por traits and prefers to take photographs with natural light on location. In the course of her career, Doove developed her own style. She makes por traits for various magazines, companies, publishers, individual customers or projects.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Ed van der Elsken - The pioneering years
text Edwin van Onna
The publication in 1956 of Een Liefdesgeschiedenis in Saint Germain des Prés (A Love History in Saint Germain des Prés) marks the international breakthrough of Ed van der Elsken. After his photos of the Parisian fringes of society were published, his name was established as a street photographer. Early Ed highlights the period prior to his success (1944-1956). The books tells how Van der Elsken was taken care of by Christian-anarchist anti-militarists in Bergeijk during the last year of the war; how he became acquainted with photography in Wormerveer and how he immersed himself in high society circles in Paris. Documents from the archives of the Leiden University Library and the Nederlands Foto Museum in Rotterdam show a searching Ed van der Elsken. Contact sheets expose a photographic universe populated by models, stars, musicians, cats, dogs, partygoers, artists and top athletes.
Edwin van Onna (1966) studied ar t history at the VU Amsterdam. He worked as a theory teacher (HKU and Piet Zwar t Institute Rotterdam), curator (De Krabbedans Eindhoven) and published for the national design magazines Frame Magazine and Items. Various books for publishers Frame, BIS and Archehov are to his name. He unravels “lost” stories on the crossroads of ar t, design and architecture.
There is an impression that Ed opposed corporate photoshoots, but his pocket diary is full of business appointments for advertising campaigns. Examples for whom he worked are Weverij De Ploeg and furniture brand ‘t Spectrum, UMS Pastoe and PTT Post and Telecom. Within this oeuvre he develops a remarkable personal style with an emphasis on interaction between the models. He likes to use acquaintances from his own circle for the necessary freedom of movement. A new love story unfolds against the backdrop of the coldest winter month of the twentieth century.

Pruyser takes the reader into an accessible life story about education, design, collecting waste, collaborating with people and making decisions. “I would like to tell a wide audience about my beautiful profession, the creativity that connects people. Because of the industrial success of Philips and DAF and because of the current identity of high-tech and design, the stories of A.F.Th. van der Heijden swing like golden traces in the city of Eindhoven. The author was not born there. He and his alter ego Albert (from De tandeloze tijd) are born in the home of the maternal grandparents in Tivoli, at that time a quarter of Geldrop. After his childhood in Geldrop he attends secondary school in Eindhoven, where the girls come into view, his friends appear, and Adri and Albert find their way in the nightlife there.
The bicycle book was compiled by the Van der Heijden cycle route working group. The members of this workgroup are: Renny de Bruyn, Jos Geevers, Leonie Josiassen and Han Roijakkers
The bicycle tour in this book takes you past biographical locations and past locations of scenes from the recounted time between 1950 and 1980 from the prologue and three parts of De tandeloze tijd and from two requiems. The book starts with a short portrait of the writer and his oeuvre. The heart of the book is the description of the cycle route with seventeen storytelling points, each elaborated in a general introduction, description of the novel scene and quotes from the book. TRAVEL STORIES
a Burgundian pilgrimage
• a fascinating travel story to Santiago de Compostela text Theo Reijnders
In September 2001, five friends made a bicycle trip from Best in The Netherlands to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. It became a fascinating adventure, the journey of their lives. They enjoyed the sporting challenge, the beautiful landscapes and the historic environment that they cycled through every day. They also enjoyed the evenings when, at the table, with a glass of wine, many surprising, fascinating, sometimes also tragic or moving stories were revealed.
Theo Reijnders studied English and American Literature and star ted his career as an English teacher. He was subsequently rector of the Jacob-Roelandslyceum in Boxtel for almost 20 years. He was also an alderman in the Brabant municipalities of Eersel and Best.
A book with multiple storylines, full of knowledge about a very broad field, and also embedded in the issues of the day (9/11). A book that reads very easily, with surprising twists and turns. Written down with warmth and compassion. Rob Voeten, former director of Brabant Pers
