Step 1 Start by fastening the two short sides (450 x 450 x 2) to the front (968 x 450 x 1). Drill pilot holes 5 cm from the top and the bottom of each short side, as well as in the middle. Sink the holes with a countersink cutter and then screw the sides to the front piece.
Step 2
Complete the rectangle by affixing the back (968 x 450 x 1) as per step 1.
Step 3 Slide the base (968 x 418 x 1) into the chest. Once it is in position at the bottom of the chest, use a small drill bit to drill pilot holes from the side, about 8 mm from the base of the chest. Repeat this process for all four sides. Sink all holes and then fasten the base to all four of the sides using screws.

Step 4
Turn the chest upside down and position the three base strips (430 x 50 x 3) equal distance apart underneath the base. Drill pilot holes into the ends and sink holes. Now apply wood glue and fasten the strips on with screws.
Step 5 When you fit the lid (475 x 1050 x 1), ensure that the back of the lid lies flush with the back of the chest. Then measure carefully to ensure that the overhang on each of the sides is exactly 25 mm. Position each hinge, first affixing the top part to the lid, then affixing the bottom part to the back of the chest. Now screw the hinges into place.
Step 6 Straighten out the strut. Raise the lid to an upright position, place the straightened strut between one of the hinges and the side of the chest, ensuring that the joint is completely free to articulate. Mark this position with a pencil and screw the strut to the chest.
