Step 1

Make up the end panels

First make the two end frames, using the 32 mm x 32 mm x 380 mm long pieces of batten as the vertical sides, and the 32 mm x 32 mm x 236 mm pieces as the horizontal sides. The horizontal sides fit inside the vertical ones. Secure each corner with wood glue and two chipboard screws. Then affix six 8 mm x 44 mm x 300 mm slats to the outside of each frame, spacing them out evenly and ensuring that the lowest gap will admit a 38 mm x 38 mm batten.

Secure them with wood glue and 25 mm wire nails.

Step 2 Screw in the base supports Use the three 32 mm x 32 mm x 780 mm battens to create a strong base. Space them out evenly and then screw the end of the battens into the lowest gap in the end frames, remembering to strengthen the bond with wood glue.

Step 3 Nail on the slats To complete the long sides of the planter, affix six of the 8 mm x 44 mm x 796 mm slats to each side. Again, space them out evenly, apply wood glue and then secure with 25 mm wire nails.

Step 4 Apply the PVC lining Make up a strong lining with the 250 micron PVC sheeting.

Fold and staple the plastic where required and trim off any excess that protrudes above the top of the planter. Pierce the base in a few places to allow water to escape, thus preventing root rot.
