OUR OFFERING At University Centre Leeds, we understand, support and welcome everyone’s differences. We know that one size doesn’t fit all, that’s why we offer foundation, top-up, postgraduate and masters degrees as well as foundation degrees with foundation year, higher and degree apprenticeships, HNC/Ds and teacher training qualifications. FOUNDATION DEGREE AND TOP-UP DEGREE ROUTE
Our foundation degree and top-up degree route ensures you achieve the same level of qualification, in the same number of years, as a traditional honours degree programme. Our offering is condensed into two or two and a half days per week, giving you time for other commitments. Foundation degrees are respected qualifications that develop specific expertise in conjunction with employers, relevant to particular sectors. They generally last two years, are industry-focused and are the same level as studying the first and second year of a full honours degree. They can lead to one year top-up courses that raise a foundation degree or HND to a full honours degree.

FEES AND FUNDING ucleeds.ac.uk
28
TUITION FEES
Bursaries are means-tested and will depend on your performance. You don’t need to apply separately for these as they will be administered by University Centre Leeds automatically. Please visit our website for details on fees for individual courses.
Don’t worry, funding is on-hand to help. Tuition fee loans are available to cover course costs regardless of household income. These are paid to us by the Student Loans Company. You only pay back according to how much you earn, once your salary is over £26,575.
WORKING OUT YOUR BUDGET
The calculator at gov.uk/student-
finance-calculator will give you an estimate of how much student finance you may be entitled to before you apply.
Ineligible or self-funding students will need to pay an initial payment of 25% at enrolment. This is followed by six consecutive monthly direct debit payments to cover the remaining tuition fee for that academic year. Part-time students are eligible for loans if they are completing at least 25% of the equivalent full-time course load each year.
REPAYING STUDENT LOANS
You will only start repaying your loans for fees and living costs from the financial year after you graduate when your income is above £26,575. If your income falls below this amount, your repayments will stop. The repayment rate is 9% of your income above £26,575, so the amount you repay will depend on what you earn, not how much you borrow.
Changes to student finance regulations are published regularly. Potential government policy changes may impact available funding. More information can be found at gov.uk/studentfinance or studentfinanceengland.co.uk.
The loan will be written off after 30 years if you have not repaid the full amount. Information on how much you will repay is available at gov.uk/ repaying-your-student-loan/what-you-pay.
Students can apply for loans to help with living costs. The maximum amount varies each year and the amount you can receive will depend on household income. Visit gov. uk/student-finance for more information. Additional non-repayable support such as Parents’ Learning Allowance, childcare funding and Disabled Students’ Allowance can pay for any extra study costs that may be incurred due to children or disability. We also have a generous bursary scheme available to full-time students.

Nightlife lovers will enjoy the variety of bars in the centre. Eat inside a docked boat at The Dry Dock Leeds or have a catchup and a cocktail in the rooftop beer garden at Headrow House. STUDENT CASE STUDY LAUREN HOODLESS FASHION, THEATRICAL AND MEDIA HAIR AND MAKEUP
Fashion, Theatrical and Media Hair and Makeup graduate makes it as a makeup artist. With a new wave of beauty influencers, social media professionals and
YouTube stars, the next generation of makeup extraordinaries are already pursuing creative careers as makeup artists (MUAs). Yet, what separates
the amateurs from the professionals is qualifications, work experience and a captivating portfolio. We managed to snag a few moments with Lauren
Hoodless about her experience at University Centre Leeds, her role as a freelance MUA and advice for aspiring artists.
WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE UNIVERSITY CENTRE LEEDS?
After studying a BTEC in Media Makeup at Stockport College, I visited a
variety of university courses across the country. I was really impressed by the open day at University Centre Leeds and felt the course was going to
cover everything I was hoping for. I also really trusted that the staff were
committed to our success and invested in the course, which was reassuring. WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT STUDYING AT UNIVERSITY CENTRE LEEDS?
I think it was really great how much free reign we were given in terms of how we interpreted our practical briefs, and received so much support
and guidance from the staff every step of the way. I feel like my confidence in areas such as prosthetics developed massively due to the tutor's help,
the extra sessions provided, as well as the equipment and products that were always readily available.
I found the course offered a really good balance of theory, practice, teaching and guest speakers.
HOW DO YOU APPLY THE SKILLS YOU LEARNT ON THE COURSE IN YOUR JOB ROLE?
I don't think there has been anything on the course that I haven't ended up putting into practice in industry. Some aspects of prosthetics that I
didn't imagine I would need to know were the sole reasons I managed to secure a couple of jobs, as I had the capability needed for that specific
role. Everything I learnt across my three years at University Centre Leeds has been applied in industry at some stage.

STUDENT CASE STUDY AARON RAMSKILL COMPUTER GAMES
Building a career around a lifelong ambition is incredibly important for University Centre Leeds student, Aaron Ramskill. After turning to video games during tough times, his passion was ignited and his academic journey began. We spoke with him to find out more about achieving his BA (Hons) Computer Games degree and carving his career path. HOW DID YOUR PASSION DEVELOP?
Video games have always been part of my life and have got me through
some challenging times in the past. For this reason, I’m really passionate about building a career in this field and so decided to study game design at Leeds City College for two years, before enrolling at University Centre Leeds.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY AT UNIVERSITY CENTRE LEEDS? While studying the college course, I was told that a new degree was being introduced. I chose to enrol as some of the tutors who taught
me at college were also going to be teaching some aspects of the degree course. This was key motivator for me as I was inspired by how supportive and knowledgeable they were.
WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE? The tutors were phenomenal. They would go the extra mile to aid my
understanding and would always answer my questions and put extra
time aside to go through anything I needed. They built a really strong foundation for my learning and helped me achieve my best.
My degree was amazing for developing my professional and industry
skills. There are some great opportunities to attend gaming events and we’ve been lucky enough to hear from some impressive guest speakers. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE CONSIDERING A SIMILAR PROFESSION?
Practise every day. The games industry is really competitive, so the more you practise, the better chance of getting a good job after
education. Teamwork is the key to this industry; collaborative practice is something that everyone needs in this profession, as you are
constantly communicating with a wide range of people on a project.
ENGINEERING Shift your career into high gear with our multifunctional engineering programmes. Combining management, production and engineering elements with our connections with the engineering industry, we have all the components to accelerate your engineering career.

STUDENT CASE STUDY LIAM BARRETT BACHELOR OF LAWS
Student Liam Barrett (Bachelor of Laws) returned to education to pursue his passion for law. In 2019, he was awarded The Oxford University Press Law prize for being an outstanding student. We caught up with him to find out about his journey. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TIME AT UNIVERSITY CENTRE LEEDS?
My time so far has been a journey of growth, both academically and
personally. When I first arrived, I had been out of education for a few years and was worried about re-entering an academic environment.
These worries were soon alleviated, as I was welcomed by UC Leeds and received all the support I needed to smoothly get back into the swing of education.
WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE UNIVERSITY CENTRE LEEDS?
After working in finance after school for a few years, UC Leeds offered me the chance to return to education and study law. The first course that I
completed was an Access to Higher Education qualification, allowing me to move on to degree studies. After completing the Access course, I had the
opportunity to go to numerous universities across the country. Despite this,
I stayed at UC Leeds as I knew this was the best environment to develop me academically; class groups are more intimate and the tutors know you well. Furthermore, it’s diverse and exciting, everyone has a completely different past, students and teachers are of all ages and backgrounds; it is a true reflection of the modern world
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT RETURNING TO EDUCATION?
To anyone considering a return to education, a new career, a different experience to traditional universities or just entering the next
stage of their education, I would strongly advise that you consider
studying at UC Leeds. This institution aims to not only deliver a good qualification, but help you to grow personally, support you in your times of need, encourage diverse friendships and open your eyes to the fact that you have something special to offer the world.

THE UNIVERSITY IS PHENOMENAL IN PROVIDING FLEXIBILITY FOR ME
TOM PARTINGTON FD SPORTS PERFORMANCE
STUDENT CASE STUDY TOM PARTINGTON SPORTS PERFORMANCE
SPORTS PERFORMANCE STUDENT WALKS INTO SILVER MEDAL Tom Partington is currently studying a Foundation degree in Sports Performance and has recently scooped a silver medal for the British Senior Indoor Championships in race walking. We spoke with him to find out more about his impressive achievement and how he balances university life with an intense training schedule.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY AT UNIVERSITY CENTRE LEEDS? I studied my Level 3 Diploma in Sport at Leeds City College, where
my tutor recommended University Centre Leeds. The idea of studying something I’m very passionate about was so exciting to me and the
prospect of becoming more skilled as an athlete through understanding theory was really intriguing.
HOW DOES UNIVERSITY CENTRE LEEDS SUPPORT YOUR ATHLETIC CAREER?
The university is phenomenal in providing flexibility for me and I am
given a work extension if an upcoming assignment clashes with a race walking competition. This is extremely important for me and allows
me to focus my time accordingly so I can achieve my full potential. HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED WITH RACE WALKING? Both my parents are fierce race walking champions who hold
around 30 medals between them, so I’ve been exposed to it from a very early age. My dad is also close friends with the director at
the National Endurance Centre in Leeds who has been coaching me. HOW DID IT FEEL TO WIN SECOND PLACE IN THE BRITISH SENIOR INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS?
I felt an immense sense of pride; especially in continuing my
parents’ legacy. This is the first silver I have ever won, so I was ecstatic to have achieved this. My win makes me even more
motivated to continue training and achieve higher next time. I would definitely recommend University Centre Leeds to
budding athletes as the courses provide useful techniques,
skills and theory to allow them to go forward in their career.
