CELEBRATING

Shanon Tarandij - Judo

Physical activity really can unite people around the world. There are so many different ways to be active. Leeds Girls Can wants to celebrate some of these amazing activities practiced all over the world.

"Judo" is an Olympic combat sport which means "the gentle way". Judo not only makes me feel fit and healthy but empowered and strong. When I step onto the mat to train, i am able to forget everything else, for me it is an outlet. Judo has taught me so much, but the best thing I have learned is how to get back up when you are down – that’s life. The judo world championships are held with men and women at the same event and location, with the same number of weight classes and equal prize money for both. This proves judo is an inclusive sport and perfect for women and girls! The judo code is made up of values such as "courage" "honesty" and "respect", these are values that I not only wish to demonstrate on the tatami (the mat), but in life.

SPORT FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Jessica Ennis-Hill Athlete

Dame Jessica Ennis- Hill is a British former track and field athlete. It was outside school that Jessica’s sporting journey really began. In school holidays Jessica and her sister would attend local athletics camps. At the age of 13 at one of those summer camps Jessica met her future coach, who went on to coach her throughout her blossoming athletics career. A lot of people have heard of Super Saturday, this was the day that Jessica achieved her lifelong dream of becoming Heptathlon Champion in front of her home crowd at the 2012 London Olympics. She took the gold medal with a new personal best score. In 2016 Jessica was offered a Dame hood.

Naomi Osaka Tennis Naomi Osaka is a Haitian Japanese professional tennis player. At the age of 23 she was the first Asian player to hold the top rankings in singles and is four time grand slam singles champion. Naomi became the first woman to win successive grand slam singles titles, since Serena Williams in 2015. It has been said that Naomi has a contrasting personality on and off court with her fast pace and aggressive play. She described herself as a cute kitten (off court) and a tiger (on the court).

Golf has been a massive part of my life for around 20 years now. I started playing golf when I was 5 years old, playing at my local golf club, along the way playing for my county and finally turning my hobby into my full time job. I’m now a teaching professional based in Dubai. My goal is to get as many women and girls playing golf as possible! I love how golf has given me so many opportunities to travel and meet people that I would never have met, but also who have turned out to be life-long friends. It’s definitely a sport that gets ignored but one that once you try it you are hooked. It really is worth giving it a go as it might just surprise you.

HEERA-RANIS CRICKET CLUB

Why Heera-Ranis? Most of the team are of Pakistani heritage – so we were keen to capture this in the team’s name. The girls were keen to have a name that represented who they were, which is how the name Heera-Ranis came about. Heera – meaning diamond and Rani meaning queen in Urdu, which is the language spoken by most of the girls attending the group – Hence HeeraRanis was the winner! Successes In November 2019 when we won a successful nomination for Street Project of the Year 2019! You can view more of this success and more by following our Instagram Page @heeraranis

.9

Heera-Ranis street cricket team was established in September 2018 through the Chance to Shine Charity and the Yorkshire Cricket Board. Street is a short and fast format of cricket, which is designed to be playable in smaller spaces and venues. There is no ‘kit’ required and participants can just turn up and play! Clare who delivers the sessions was new to coaching at the time and this was her opportunity to share her love of cricket while supporting the community within Harehills. Initially there were 5 girls attending sessions but as the word spread numbers steadily grew and the move to the Bilal Sports Centre enabled us to continue to grow with numbers peaking around 35!

Ensure you can take in breath easily during practice and avoid pushing into any pinching sensation or pain. Simply come back to the beginning & take the posture to where feels good in your own body.

SELF CONFIDENCE

SOMETIMES WE CAN REALLY WANT TO DO SOMETHING WHETHER IT IS ATTEND A DANCE CLASS, GO TO THE GYM OR JOIN A NEW SPORTS TEAM BUT WE LACK SELF-CONFIDENCE TO TAKE THAT FIRST STEP, TO A NEW EXCITING JOURNEY. SELF-CONFIDENCE CAN PLAY A SIGNIFICANT PART IN HOW WE ENGAGE IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. HERE ARE SOME TIPS ON HOW TO BUILD YOUR SELF-CONFIDENCE. What is self-confidence? Self-confidence is the attitude you have towards your skills and abilities. This doesn’t mean necessarily mean you think you are the best at everything, but you know your strengths and your weaknesses as well.

At times we can all lack self-confidence and which can have an effect on different aspects of our lives such as; school, taking part in new activities and relationships with family and friends. But there are ways we can build our self-confidence.

WAYS TO BUILD YOUR SELF CONFIDENCE

naC slriG sdeeL | 3 eussi 1202 remmuS

LEEDSGIRLSCAN

Make a list, of all the things you have achieved. Every time you do something that you are proud of add it to the list. This could be doing well in an exam, taking part in exercise or being a good friend etc. When you are lacking confidence pull out your list and remind yourself of all the amazing stuff you have done.

Set some goals.

It is important when setting goals you write down the steps you need to take to achieve the goal. You can start by setting small achievable goals such as; taking part in 10 minutes exercise, completing one task for your homework or baking a cake. Once you complete s step or the full goal tick it off. This will help you gain confidence in your ability to get stuff done.

Get a hobby

.31

Having hobbies can really help build our confidence. It is important that it is something you are passionate about, it could be boxing, photography or even blog writing. By committing to something you are passionate about you are likely to feel motivated to build your skills. Which will then help increase your confidence.

ASK US ANYTHING I really enjoy taking part in P.E at school because I don’t have to worry about what I am wearing, as we all have our P.E kits on. I really want to start running after school but I do not own any other sports kit, except for my uniform. I am worried it is expensive to buy sports clothes therefore it isn’t affordable to my family. What can I do?

It is great to hear you enjoy your P.E lessons. There are so many factors that can stop us taking part in physical activity, attire (clothing/kit) is a really common one. Sports kit can be expensive to purchase dependant on the brand, but there are cheaper available alternatives from high street shops, charity shops and online. Try not to worry about having all the kit, as long as you are comfortable in what you are wearing and have suitable footwear that is the most important thing. Another option is to get in touch with us at Leedsgirlscan@leeds.gov.uk and we can look into other options to help you to get the kit you require.

Tips for what to wear when your working out... It is really important you feel comfortable in what you wear. So try to set aside a loose fitting T-shirt in your favourite colour, just for when you get active. Appropriate footwear is really important when taking part in physical activity. Something that provides support and comfort. Also try and find a comfortable pair of leggings or loose pants that are just for when you are active, that way you have a specific workout kit. Clip or tie your hair back and get into the zone and enjoy the work out. Don’t forget we are always here to help contact Leedsgirlscan@leeds.gov.uk and we can look at providing you with support.

TIPS

WE ASKED THE STUDENTS AT DIXONS TRINITY CHAPELTOWN

TO TELL US WHY THEY LOVE SPORT this is what they said...

Looking past over the past few years I have been suddenly interested in sports I have to say having no doubt that I have come an extremely long way. Sport has been the sort of thing that instantly brings the real me out. Despite this there has always been some negative sides to sports. During the 5 years I’ve been playing I have seen some back chatting and body shaming and “they are not fit for this” or “they can’t even play”. This put so many people down and reduced their choices to playing more often. Period pains can also put you down when you’re trying to enjoy yourself and so does the pressure that’s been thrown onto you However sports in general had an amazing impact in my life. As a person who has trouble focusing playing sports help me stay awake and in the moment. It’s really an amazing feeling owning the ground and scoring points. Don’t be afraid to try new things out and to explore new things. Play a few sports see which one is your favourite. You will come to liking one eventually. Trust me.

Thank you for taking the time to read my piece of writing. Yours sincerely, Someone who understands

Sports. Think of the first sport that comes to mind. Football (for example). What do you see? Huge, muscular guys chasing the ball on a football pitch dripping with sweat? Wrong. If this is what you imagine when thinking of football, I’m here to change your mind. This idea is not only wrong in the fact that society portrays athletes, such as footballers, as men but also in the fact that it cannot only damage a girl and woman’s self-esteem but also make young boys and men feel like they also have to look/be like them too. I’ve always been chubbier than other kids my age so when I was younger, I used to hate playing sports because in my head, you had to be skinny to play sports and boys were anyway better at most of them so what was even the point? BOYYY was I wrong! (no pun intended). When I was 9, as a year group, we would do swimming lessons every week. I hated it with a capital H. I was insecure about my body especially in a swimming costume but that’s for another day. Other classes thought that one of my friends (a boy) was the best swimmer there since he was the fastest runner. But I can say, without a doubt that one of my best friends, a girl was by far the best swimmer there. You see it doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or a girl, fat or skinny, you can do whatever sport you want. You just need to always work hard. From hating sports, to now playing netball with my school, I know that I can succeed in sports. I might have to work a bit harder than others but hard work beats talent every time. The next time you feel discouraged to play sports, read this article and remember your worth.
