Tosca Puccini Sun 16, Sat 22 & Fri 28 September; Wed 3, Fri 5, Thu 11 & Sat 13 October 2018 Tosca, Rome’s star opera singer, is deeply in love with charismatic artist Cavaradossi. When he is arrested and tortured by Scarpia, the corrupt Chief of Police, Tosca becomes the victim of cruel blackmail: she plots her revenge, but the consequences are more terrible than she can imagine... One of the world’s most popular operas, Puccini’s melodrama of lust and love, of cruelty and self-sacrifice, portrays people at their best and very worst. The high-octane score veers from tenderness to brutal power and includes Tosca’s famous passionate aria Vissi d’arte. Sung in Italian with English titles Running time approx. 2hrs 40mins Supported by the Friends of Opera North

Arriving in Paris, French bachelors everywhere vie excitedly for her attention. Meanwhile Baron Zeta, the Pontevedrian ambassador, must ensure that she marries the charming Count Danilo to save the state from financial ruin. Tue 16 – Sat 20 October 2018 Cilla – The Musical is a spectacular and heart-warming musical adaptation of the critically acclaimed ITV mini-series based on the early life of Cilla Black, by BAFTA Award winner, Jeff Pope (The Moorside, Philomena, Mrs Biggs, Little Boy Blue) and recently nominated for Best New Musical at the WhatsOnStage Awards. Kara Lily Hayworth plays Cilla. Following weeks of open auditions countrywide, Kara fought off thousands of hopefuls to be named as the girl to play Cilla in the first ever musical about the star’s life. Executive Producer and Cilla’s son, Robert Willis, said of Kara: ‘I knew she was the one my mum would have wanted!’. In the role of Brian Epstein is TV and stage favourite Andrew Lancel best known for his portrayal of Frank Foster in Coronation Street. The musical score includes Cilla’s greatest hits Anyone Who Had a Heart, Alfie and Something Tells Me, Twist and Shout by The Beatles, California Dreamin’ by The Mamas and The Papas and many more.

Mon 1 – Sat 6 April 2019 Two famous but desperate playwrights are stuck on an ocean liner headed for New York, feverishly trying to rehearse their latest show before reaching land, and opening night. But they are constantly distracted by their delicate composer’s attempts to end it all, having overheard his lover confess her feelings to the leading man. Add an absurdly unorthodox waiter, a mistimed lifeboat drill and a vanishing glass of brandy and soon the sharp Atlantic winds turn to world-class gales of laughter as these colourful characters become tangled up in a typically Stoppardian string of absurd events.

Tue 23 – Sat 27 April 2019 From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Jerome Robbins’ iconic production transports Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to 1950s New York City where two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs: the American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time. Following this year’s acclaimed production of Cats, Leeds Amateur Operatic Society (LAOS) returns to The Grand to bring you this landmark Broadway musical. Based on a concept by Jerome Robbins, book by Arthur Laurents and a stunning score by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, this is one rumble you won’t want to miss!

Evenings 7.30pm

Tue 7 – Sat 18 May 2019 Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it ‘brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval’ (DAILY MAIL). The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Starring Olivier Award-nominated Linzi Hateley in the seminal role of Mrs Johnstone. Linzi has performed in countless West End productions including MAMMA MIA!, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Les Misérables, Chicago, Grease and Mary Poppins.
