Tue 31 March – Sat 4 April 2020 Following critically acclaimed performances of Cats and West Side Story, Leeds Amateur Operatic Society (LAOS) returns to The Grand with this compelling tale of a cockney flower girl transformed into an elegant lady. Hailed by critics and audiences for its heart and its wit, My Fair Lady is that rare musical by which all others are measured. Winner of 6 Tony® Awards and 8 Oscars and based on George Bernard Shaw’s play, Pygmalion, My Fair Lady has been entrancing audiences since it was first performed on Broadway in 1956. Acclaimed Professor and confirmed bachelor, Henry Higgins, makes a wager with his linguistic colleague, Colonel Pickering, that in six months he can pass off “guttersnipe” Eliza Doolittle as a duchess at an Embassy ball. And so the journey begins, not only for Eliza but for Higgins and others too, with unlikely bonds deepening as the story unfolds. With one of musical theatre’s greatest songbooks, including Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, With a Little Bit of Luck, I Could Have Danced All Night, On the Street Where You Live, and Get Me to the Church on Time, you are sure to leave the theatre singing! Hilarious mishaps and DIY disasters are bringing the house down, quite literally, as Some Mothers Do ’Ave ’Em hits the road with Joe Pasquale (New Faces, I’m a Celebrity, Spamalot, The Producers) as the lovable accident-prone Frank Spencer. Betty has exciting news for Frank, but he’s preoccupied by possible newfound fame as a magician. With guests arriving for dinner and crossed wires all round, priceless misunderstandings are on the menu. Susie Blake (Coronation Street, The Victoria Wood Show, Blithe Spirit) stars as his disapproving mother-in-law and Sarah Earnshaw (Nativity! The Musical) as his long-suffering wife Betty. Based on the 1970s classic TV comedy by Ray Allen and directed by the award-winning Guy Unsworth, Some Mothers Do ’Ave ’Em is the ultimate feel-good night out, washed down with lashings of nostalgia and mother’s prune wine. Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, the Olivier Award-winning West End and Broadway show returns to Leeds! Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation, with countless classics such as (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Take Good Care of My Baby, You’ve Got a Friend, So Far Away, It Might as Well Rain Until September, Up on the Roof, and The Locomotion.
