Hi! The FREE magazine for all students at Leeds University Union.
A NEW TERM AND A NEW VISION
Issue 1 | Volume 6
o c t o b e r 2010 Welcome Back // News // Varsity // Black History Month // The best deals in Essentials // The List
It probably gets said every year, but with the new building work complete, a new democratic system promising to deliver real change and even more to get involved with, it really feels that this year is going to be great. We’re really excited about the events and campaigns planned for October. Varsity turns six and Black History Month returns with its best line-up yet, but we’ll also be working really hard to protect your education as

we build momentum in the run up to the national higher education cuts demo in November. Whether you’re back for another year or you’ve just started here in Leeds, have a great year and get involved!
Your Exec Leeds University Union P.S Follow us online at www. leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/ haveyoursay/
This summer, your Union has undergone a lot of physical changes. As well as a new building, we have a new vision, website and our charity status... A NEW VISION
MORE HELP
The new vision and a plan for the next four years were voted in last year at referendum with a 96% majority. You told us the Union building was fundamental to your sense of belonging at Leeds - a place to get support, meet friends and learn new things.
We’ve responded to your requests for better access to help, more seating, and better areas for clubs and societies to use for meeting, rehearsing and performing. There are now better areas in the foyer for use throughout the day, and more versatile spaces in the refurbished Lounge.
WEBSITE
A NEW BUILDING
We also have revamped our website. Everything you need to know about the Union, you can find at: www.leedsuniversityunion. org.uk.
It’s one of the busiest buildings on campus, with over 15,000 people passing through the doors each day during term time, so we want to make the most of what’s available. The foyer area, the Terrace and the Lounge have all been refurbished over the summer and we have plans to do even more in the next few years.
CHARITY STATUS
WE WANT YOUR FEEDBACK
We’re now a registered charity, with a clear vision written for you: Together, we’ll make sure you love your time at Leeds. 4 The Gist

Get Representing Over 1,000 students are representatives across the University; will you join them in speaking up for your peers? Student reps are active at every level, from tutor groups to the University Senate. They work to make sure students have their say, voicing concerns and raising issues that are important to those they represent. We’re recruiting for school reps now in many schools. You’ll not only be carrying out an essential role, you’ll also gain great experience attending meetings and forums that will deliver real changes.
Hidden CafÉ With a 1960’s look that evokes nostalgia while also being uniquely exciting, the Hidden cafe offers a great retreat within the Union building. It’s the perfect place to grab afternoon tea and unwind. Tucked away next to Union Books, you’ll find freshly baked cupcakes, scones, brownies, flapjacks and cakes all on offer. The vintage interior has a genuinely homely feel, while a gallery wall of work from Leeds University art students completes the personal look. It’s all new for this year, so head to the Hidden Café today.
or a salad, burger or platter to fill you up at lunch, the new menu offers a great range, even including breakfast and the classic Sunday roast!
Top advice from your Community Officer: Paul Gold Living in a private house means taking responsibility for your own bin. Collection dates have changed, so it’s important that you know when to put your bin out, as well as the consequences of not bringing it back in. You’ve probably noticed how bad a road looks when its pavements are scattered with bins. But imagine how hard that makes it for wheelchairs users, people with impaired vision or mobility, or parents with push chairs to pass through. It only takes a second to bring your bin in and once you’re in the habit you’ll be doing it automatically, so start now. To help you, Leave Leeds Tidy wardens will be out this month in all the big student areas around Leeds, putting stickers on your bins and delivering collection info through your letter box.. When it comes to bins, I’ve got four key tips:
The deadline for applying is Friday 15th October, head to www. leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/haveyoursay/ courseandschoolreps/ to find out how to apply.
Send us your ideas
1. Find out your new bin day. If there’s something you want changing, whether it’s something about your Union, the University or your local community, send us your idea to make it happen. You can submit ideas at any time of year to be discussed and voted on at the next student forum meeting. If an idea is accepted, it’ll become part of Union policy and your Exec will work to make it happen. Submit your ideas here: www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/ideas

2. Put your bin out the night before.
the terrace refurb Get great food throughout the day at the Terrace, with a new menu delivering great meals at prices lower than you’d expect. Whether you’re after a full three course meal, a sharer to socialise over with friends, www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk
Don’t forget the Terrace plays host to a number of nights during the week including Dance Like Your Dad (Montly Tuesdays), Why Not Wednesdays (Every Wednesday), LSR Cocktail Night (Every Thursday), Pent:House (Every Saturday) and the official Fruity Warm Up Party (Every Friday). Entry to these nights are all free!
3. Bring it in the night after it’s been emptied to avoid being fined for leaving it on the street. 4. Make sure you’re putting the right things in each bin, keeping food waste and glass out of your recycling bin.
union books 10% sale Union Books are offering 10% off all their stock until further notice. The bookshop is located on level -1 of the Union Building and is open Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5.30pm. Union Books will be closing on Friday 10th December 2010, but will remain open and will continue to offer the existing service through semester one. “The day highlights the friendship between both Leeds Met Carnegie and Leeds University, the passion our institutes have for sport and the pride our athletes have in representing their university.” Leeds Carnegie AU President
It’s the sixth year that over 8,000 athletes and spectators have been brought together to pit the Leeds Universities’ finest against one another.
Last year’s captain described it as “the genuine highlight of many players’ careers”, and when you’re cheering along in the stands you’ll see why.
This is an event driven by the healthy rivalry we’ve always enjoyed, but it’s also a celebration of everything positive about being a student in the City of Leeds.
Continued success and ever-growing crowds mean the pride of each team and their supporters gets greater every year.
Over 50 fixtures cater for all major track and field sports, with new events this year including mountaineering (bouldering) and fencing. As always, competition culminates at the floodlit Headingley Carnegie Stadium as over 10,000 fill the stands to cheer on the Men’s Rugby Union match.

Coupled with the great new facilities at the University of Leeds, this year has triumph well within its grasp. Come along to offer your support, and make sure we bring the Varsity trophy home!
Tim Mortimer Activities Officer As Activities Officer at LUU I know the amount of dedication and passion from all sides that goes into putting on an event like this. It’s this dedication and passion that ensures Varsity gets bigger and better every year. I know from speaking to people in my role at other universities that Leeds Varsity is the one that they all look to for inspiration. Win or lose, Varsity has always been about taking pride in your university. Whether you’re lining up to play in the Men’s Rugby Union finale, competing for your club during the day or simply coming along to cheer, it’s a chance to get behind your institution, fight for the right result and, together, be a part of the Varsity experience.
