The weeks are flying by. It feels like term has not long started but we’re already half way through and Movember is here (page 8). The rapid pace means a lot has flown by – a highly successful Varsity, a great Black History Month and an exciting visit from Channel 4 news as tuition fees hit the national agenda, to name just a few. But there’s a lot more to come before the year is out. Firstly, we want you to join with us as we voice our opposition to higher fees and the devastating cuts aimed at

higher education joining the march on November 10th is the best way to do this (see page 4). We also got two big ideas that we want you to vote on (page 12), and finally, but perhaps most importantly, we’ve got four spaces that need occupying by the best brains on campus for our University Challenge team (see page 16 & 17 for more info)!

Looking for a house? It’s better to wait... With over 4,000 surplus bed spaces left in student houses every year in Leeds, students have never been in a better position when it comes to house hunting. So if you’ve been told ‘the earlier the better’, here’s the truth… The longer you wait, the more landlords are willing to negotiate on rent, furniture and improvements. If an agent, landlord or even your mates are pressuring you to sign now just take a step back. It’s a true buyer’s market, which means YOU have the power. Waiting gives you longer to decide who you want to live with; remember, you may have only known your housemates for a few months, and a lot can change in a year. Once you have signed for a house, it’s very hard to get out of the contract. And importantly, until January, many of the best houses won’t be on the market yet and some will be leftovers from last year. So please don’t rush into looking for a house; you’ll never be in a position where there are no houses left, no matter what you’re looking for. January 15th is the date when Unipol housing list is published. I strongly recommend waiting until this date to start looking. That’s the only way to make sure you’ve got the best pick of good quality housing, backed by the Unipol code of standards which guarantees you a fair deal. 6

House Hunting? At the end of the month, the Student Advice Centre are visiting halls of residence to talk to first-time house hunters about the potential pitfalls of moving into private housing (and how to avoid them). There’ll be talks taking place in the larger halls, with talks on campus for all other students!
The longer you wait, the more landlords are willing to negotiate on rent, furniture and improvements...” Paul Gold Come along and get armed with the knowledge that will put you in the driving seat and make sure you’re not left with broken promises and unexpected charges. Look out for the dates on www. leedsuniversityunion.org.uk.
Housing Fair There will be a Housing Fair in the Union building in January, and will bring together some of the best landlords in Leeds in your union. It’s a great place to start your search for a house, so watch out for it. www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk

First Impressions Count We asked you to tell us how your Freshers’ Week went. Your answers came rushing in, and they were resoundingly positive! Every year we gather feedback from thousands of new students to paint a picture of how you found the start to your time in Leeds. That way we can find out what’s gone well, but also find out how to keep working to make each Freshers’ Week better than the one before. We asked you what the most important thing we could do for you to make sure you love your time at Leeds. You told us you want us to:
• • •
Offer support, advice and a place to socialise and meet people. Be the voice of students. Provide information about all the

activities on campus. Provide a range of activities. Keep bringing you live acts. Organise learning-related activities, discussion groups, etc.
Over half of the students surveyed follow Leeds University Union on Facebook and 80% of you like receiving information from the Union in this way. While we’ll always strive for 100% positive feedback, we like being kept on our toes so we’ll be looking to improve in the areas you felt were lacking. That means we’ll be looking at how we can boost the range of Freshers’ Week events further to cater for all tastes, and make changes to our daytime events to make sure those with Freshers’ Week lectures can still attend.
