LUU is still full of stuff to get involved with: 16th to 20th November is Community Week, the perfect time to find out more about your community, meet your representatives and get involved in local groups and campaigns. Also on Monday 2nd November is the big re-launch of LUU’s very own social centre The Peanut Gallery. Come along at 5.00pm to get involved in the running of the space.

Old Bar FestivALE Thursday 5th to Sunday 9th November
The Old Bar always tries to offer its customers as much variety as it can. On November 5th the range will be taken to another level as FestivALE ‘09 kicks off – an event where customers can try 18 different varieties of ale and five scrumptious ciders, all at one bar! The FestivALE will run from Thursday 5th through to Sunday 9th November, offering great drinks and traditional entertainment for all. As part of the extravaganza they’ll be hosting a flock of beers from over a dozen carefully selected breweries, so there’s something for everyone no matter how
diverse your taste. These breweries were chosen for their good quality, award-winning beers brewed in time-honored traditional manners, using traditional recipes that have died out in other parts of England. Cider fans won’t be disappointed either as this year sees the return of the ever popular range of Weston’s ciders, including such favorites as Old Rosie and Vintage Organic. If you’ve never tried ale before, or if you enjoy supping a pint every now and then, then head to the Old Bar and see what’s on tap. See you there!

For a successful candidate in the Student Executive Elections, however, that’s exactly what it is. It’s a chance to positively impact the experiences of students, while at the same time gaining experience for life – and next year it could be you. Maybe you want to improve relations between students and the community, maybe
you think there are flaws in the University’s education system, or maybe you want to help combat discrimination: if you think you’ve got what it takes to improve the lives of students, consider standing. Nominations open on Monday 9th November, and any current student can stand.

For most candidates that means speaking to thousands of students, and talking passionately about the issues that matter to you: there are no pre-requisites, you just need to be a University of Leeds student willing to put in a lot of hard work. If you’re successful, it’s a rewarding position unlike any other. You’ll join the Board of Trustees alongside directors from other organisations, it’s an incredible experience. It opens doors too - just take a look at what two former Student Executive members had to say about their time in
office (‘Executive decisions’, right). If you’re thinking about standing in the Student Executive elections and want to know more, pop into the Campaigns & Democracy Support office: they can tell you more about the role itself and the election process that comes before it. They also provide support to all candidates when campaigning, giving you guidance and advice on how to be effective - you aren’t left to fend for yourself.

Executive Decisions! Two former officers tell us about their time in the role: “I wouldn’t be doing the job I have now if it wasn’t for my time on the Exec at Leeds; it was like having the first five years of your career fast-tracked. Influencing the leaders of the University and the City, building relationships with your team, Union staff and NUS, making hard choices about how to spend limited resources – all skills which I use every day in my job now. It was also two of the most enjoyable and rewarding years I have ever had and my achievements at LUU are still amongst my proudest.”

The Exec explained: LUU members have six Student Executive officers - each with their own role: Activities, Community, Communications and Internal Affairs, Equality and Diversity, Education, and Welfare.
Employed full-time, they work for one year (maximum of two years if re-elected).
They are elected by fellow students in an annual vote which takes place during February.
Previous members of the Exec have gone on to achieve great success in their field, whether it be education, business or politics – Jack Straw is a former member of the LUU Exec!
Representing the views of students and making sure their voice is heard is the main responsibility of an officer.

The Referendum is coming. Time to VOTE ‘YES’ or ‘NO’! The closing date for motions has now passed and the issues you’ll be voting on this month can be revealed. The Referendum takes place twice each year, and the forthcoming vote gives you your first chance to voice your opinion on the issues your fellow students feel should be up for debate.

Members are the most important part of any group, they’re the reason why clubs and societies exist! You can rest assured that whenever you decide to join up you’ll be warmly welcomed. In fact, you can join clubs and societies at any time during the year, and at any time during your degree. It’s really easy to join a club or society, just take a look at the three steps on the right, but don’t forget: the sooner you get involved, the more you’ll get out! Space will be provided for this as part of a building master plan, which will see exciting new development, both inside and out. Changes to the building will see seating and social spaces become the focal point, while excellent new amenities, design and lighting will result in a building that both encourages and inspires.

One thing that won’t change is the Union’s commitment to providing value to its members. In fact, the new plan will see an emphasis placed on finding ways the Union can help your money go further - a new loyalty card will reward those who are most involved, while encouraging less engaged members to get more out of their union.

The last four year plan (2006 to 2010) set out to make Leeds University Union the most effective students’ union in the country. With the plan now coming to an end, it looks like that goal’s been achieved, with recognition coming in the form of a Gold award from SUEI and being recognised as Student Union of the Year in the NUS awards. “What aspect of the Student Union would you miss the most if it closed?” The new plan was drawn up based on your responses. Feedback for the plan was collected at the start of term, with the plan amended based on your feedback.

Traditionally, campaigning has been one of the most important parts of a students’ union, and that isn’t set to change – but in future student feedback will take the lead when deciding on the big issues of the day.
Stakeholders
Leeds University Union is built on its members, so trust is important. That’s why increased transparency is something promised throughout the plan, with members treated like stakeholders; recognising the importance of the Union’s future in the lives of students.
Sustainability
Where did the plan come from? Work on the new plan started towards the end of the last academic year. To build up a complete picture of how the Union is used by its members, over 4,000 of you were asked questions ranging from “What aspect of University life can the Student Union help you with most?” to

will prepare the action plan and develop ways in which to deliver the initiatives within it. The new plan will begin in July 2010 and will be reviewed continuously until July 2013, when the process will begin all over again!
Finally, one of the most important parts of the plan looks to protect the future of the Union while ensuring its impact on the wider world is a positive one. Sustainability, in its broadest sense, covering not only environmental responsibility but a financial one too, is something that must form a part of the Union’s future.
Finance
Developing a financial strategy tied to our long term developments, diversifying income sources, registering with the Charities Commission and developing active partnerships with the University to improve ethical and environmental practises will together ensure that Leeds University Union has the energy to remain at the forefront of students’ unions for a long time to come.

All of this week the Union is focusing on students living in the local community. Throughout the week we’ll be dealing with rubbish, recycling, safety, finding a house, as well as showing you how to get involved in volunteering projects in your community.
Monday Talking Rubbish
The bin strike has been painful for everyone living in Leeds, but especially for students living in multiple occupancy houses. We’ll be lining wheelie bins up by the dozen outside the Union to see what you think about the council’s waste collection services and how you do your recycling.

Moving into a new house is one of the most daunting things that you can do at uni. Leeds University Union offers free and confidential housing advice throughout the year. We can help with everything from checking your landlord contracts, giving you insurance advice or even supporting 14 The Gist

Leave a message on the answerphone, with details of the problem and address, and the Universities will investigate if it is their students causing the problems, and mediate if they can. If this doesn’t help you can also contact the Council’s noise nuisance squad on 0113 240 7361 – they have the legal power to confiscate equipment and even fine people up to £5,000 for noise offences.
