Old Bar FestivALE Thursday 5th to Sunday 9th November

The Old Bar always tries to offer its customers as much variety as it can. On November 5th the range will be taken to another level as FestivALE ‘09 kicks off – an event where customers can try 18 different varieties of ale and five scrumptious ciders, all at one bar! The FestivALE will run from Thursday 5th through to Sunday 9th November, offering great drinks and traditional entertainment for all. As part of the extravaganza they’ll be hosting a flock of beers from over a dozen carefully selected breweries, so there’s something for everyone no matter how

diverse your taste. These breweries were chosen for their good quality, award-winning beers brewed in time-honored traditional manners, using traditional recipes that have died out in other parts of England. Cider fans won’t be disappointed either as this year sees the return of the ever popular range of Weston’s ciders, including such favorites as Old Rosie and Vintage Organic. If you’ve never tried ale before, or if you enjoy supping a pint every now and then, then head to the Old Bar and see what’s on tap. See you there!

Get home safely. Never walk home on your own from a night out. Amber cars support our Knowledge campaign and can get you home safe. Simply call Amber on 0113 231 1366 or visit www.taxileeds.co.uk www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/thegist

Relax in our secret hideaway with a coffee or smoothie! The Wicked Café is one of our newest additions this year, but it’s already proving a great hit. Directly opposite Union Books on the shops level, of the Union building, it’s tucked away from the busier parts of the building and offers a quiet retreat any time of day. If you’re after a quick break between lectures then why not pop in for a fresh juice or smoothie? Faced with a long day at uni you’ll want to keep your energy levels up, and fresh smoothies and juices are a great way to stay on the ball while avoiding a sugar overload! www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/thegist

The healthy options don’t stop there though; the ‘Healthy Meal Deal’ puts together any small smoothie, a portion of soup with a roll and a piece of fruit for just £3.50 – light on your wallet too!

“Fresh smoothies and juices are a great way to stay on the ball while avoiding a sugar overload!” There’s also a full range of sandwiches, panini and toasties available at great prices, with cakes, pastries and home-made cupcakes to boot. Had a long day? Any herbal/ flavoured tea and a scone or croissant is only £2!

DIY Smoothie! Make your own! Choose from: Orange, Apple or Pear Juice AND Up to 3 fruits AND Either Mango, Raspberry, Lemon Sorbet or Strawberry and Vanilla Frozen Yoghurt. £2.50 for a small & £3.00 for a large! Opening Hours:

stand. STUDENT EXECUTIVE “I never thought I’d be leading a £10 million pound organisation before I’d even graduated!” Representing over 30,000 people in an organisation with a multi-million pound turnover probably doesn’t sound like a first job.

6 The Gist

For a successful candidate in the Student Executive Elections, however, that’s exactly what it is. It’s a chance to positively impact the experiences of students, while at the same time gaining experience for life – and next year it could be you. Maybe you want to improve relations between students and the community, maybe

you think there are flaws in the University’s education system, or maybe you want to help combat discrimination: if you think you’ve got what it takes to improve the lives of students, consider standing. Nominations open on Monday 9th November, and any current student can stand.

www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/thegist

For most candidates that means speaking to thousands of students, and talking passionately about the issues that matter to you: there are no pre-requisites, you just need to be a University of Leeds student willing to put in a lot of hard work. If you’re successful, it’s a rewarding position unlike any other. You’ll join the Board of Trustees alongside directors from other organisations, it’s an incredible experience. It opens doors too - just take a look at what two former Student Executive members had to say about their time in

office (‘Executive decisions’, right). If you’re thinking about standing in the Student Executive elections and want to know more, pop into the Campaigns & Democracy Support office: they can tell you more about the role itself and the election process that comes before it. They also provide support to all candidates when campaigning, giving you guidance and advice on how to be effective - you aren’t left to fend for yourself.

READ MORE ONLINE To find out more about the roles of the Student Executive go to www.leedsuniversityunion.org. uk/stand.

Who are the Exec?

Blast from the past:

Executive Decisions! Two former officers tell us about their time in the role: “I wouldn’t be doing the job I have now if it wasn’t for my time on the Exec at Leeds; it was like having the first five years of your career fast-tracked. Influencing the leaders of the University and the City, building relationships with your team, Union staff and NUS, making hard choices about how to spend limited resources – all skills which I use every day in my job now. It was also two of the most enjoyable and rewarding years I have ever had and my achievements at LUU are still amongst my proudest.”

Seb Elsworth

The Exec explained: LUU members have six Student Executive officers - each with their own role: Activities, Community, Communications and Internal Affairs, Equality and Diversity, Education, and Welfare.

Employed full-time, they work for one year (maximum of two years if re-elected).

They are elected by fellow students in an annual vote which takes place during February.

Previous members of the Exec have gone on to achieve great success in their field, whether it be education, business or politics – Jack Straw is a former member of the LUU Exec!

Representing the views of students and making sure their voice is heard is the main responsibility of an officer.

www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/thegist

Any student can stand in the election in any year of their degree.

LUU Officer 2003 to 2005. Currently Head of Policy at ACEVO.

“From helping individual students with problems on their course to challenging the government on fees, my year as a sabbatical officer was the best decision I ever made. During the year I fought the University for better bursaries, improved feedback and I radically reformed the personal tutoring system.”

Susan Nash

LUU Officer 2007 to 2008. Currently Vice-President of NUS.

Spaces

Space will be provided for this as part of a building master plan, which will see exciting new development, both inside and out. Changes to the building will see seating and social spaces become the focal point, while excellent new amenities, design and lighting will result in a building that both encourages and inspires.

Value

One thing that won’t change is the Union’s commitment to providing value to its members. In fact, the new plan will see an emphasis placed on finding ways the Union can help your money go further - a new loyalty card will reward those who are most involved, while encouraging less engaged members to get more out of their union.

Tell me more:

Love your time at Leeds. A new vision and plan for Leeds University Union (LUU) aims to make sure every member loves their time at Leeds - and it looks set to make 2010 a very exciting year. The last four year plan (2006 to 2010) set out to make Leeds University Union the most effective students’ union in the country. With the plan now coming to an end, it looks like that goal’s been achieved, with recognition coming in the form of a Gold award from SUEI and being recognised as Student Union of the Year in the NUS awards. A new vision for 2010 to 2014 shifts the focus onto you, the member, and aims to make 10 The Gist

Leeds University Union not only the best building on campus but also right at the heart of your university life. The new plan covers a wide range of ideas, you can read it in full at www. leedsuniversityunion.org. uk/vision2014, or read on for a glimpse of the changes it outlines, and what they mean to you.

Services

With over 290 clubs and societies, and services like Joblink and the SAC, there’s

already a range of services on offer to support and develop members. The new plan will see this taken further with the creation of an opportunities centre that consolidates the options available to those wanting to grow their skills and experiences.

“A new social space will form the focal point of the building” www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/thegist

We asked...

What’s the main thing your union can help you with?

You said...

13% Academic Success

“What aspect of the Student Union would you miss the most if it closed?” The new plan was drawn up based on your responses. Feedback for the plan was collected at the start of term, with the plan amended based on your feedback.

What happens next? The plan will be taken to the November Referendum for you to vote on. At least 1,500 students are required to vote with a majority ‘Yes’ vote for the plan to be adopted. If the plan is voted in, Union trustees, officers and staff www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/thegist

Traditionally, campaigning has been one of the most important parts of a students’ union, and that isn’t set to change – but in future student feedback will take the lead when deciding on the big issues of the day.

Stakeholders

Leeds University Union is built on its members, so trust is important. That’s why increased transparency is something promised throughout the plan, with members treated like stakeholders; recognising the importance of the Union’s future in the lives of students.

Sustainability

Where did the plan come from? Work on the new plan started towards the end of the last academic year. To build up a complete picture of how the Union is used by its members, over 4,000 of you were asked questions ranging from “What aspect of University life can the Student Union help you with most?” to

Campaigning

will prepare the action plan and develop ways in which to deliver the initiatives within it. The new plan will begin in July 2010 and will be reviewed continuously until July 2013, when the process will begin all over again!

Finally, one of the most important parts of the plan looks to protect the future of the Union while ensuring its impact on the wider world is a positive one. Sustainability, in its broadest sense, covering not only environmental responsibility but a financial one too, is something that must form a part of the Union’s future.

Finance

Developing a financial strategy tied to our long term developments, diversifying income sources, registering with the Charities Commission and developing active partnerships with the University to improve ethical and environmental practises will together ensure that Leeds University Union has the energy to remain at the forefront of students’ unions for a long time to come.

All of this week the Union is focusing on students living in the local community. Throughout the week we’ll be dealing with rubbish, recycling, safety, finding a house, as well as showing you how to get involved in volunteering projects in your community.

Friday Representation

Recent media reports might suggest that living in LS6 is terrifying: that’s simply not the case! We’ll tell you all about how you can take very simple precautions that will reassure you as well as keeping your things safe. The experts from the Union’s Knowledge campaign (www. knowledge-leeds.co.uk) join forces with your local Neighourhood Watch Student Coordinator and West Yorkshire Police with practical advice on living blissfully in LS6!

Is something bothering you in your community? Is the street lighting bad? Are you surrounded by rubbish? Do the buses run on time? This is a great opportunity to find out how to get involved in local campaigns, meet your representatives, and find out how to make sure you are registered to vote in local and national elections, especially in a General Election year. The Universities in Leeds can help resolve community issues involving their students, such as noise and rubbish. Leave a message on the answerphone, with details of the problem and address, and the Universities will investigate if it is their students causing the problems, and mediate if they can. If this doesn’t help you can also contact the Council’s noise nuisance squad on 0113 240 7361 – they have the legal power to confiscate equipment and even fine people up to £5,000 for noise offences.

Dear Maddie,

Our cooker is broken. We reported it to the landlord when we moved in at the beginning of Septembe r but he hasn’t fixed it yet. We haven’ t been able to eat hot food as we don’t hav e a microwave – so we’ve been living on takeaways, which is taking its toll on our our waistlines! Is there any wallets and thing else we can do other than a sit-i n at his office? Send by email Answer: The first thing you need to do is put the problem in writing to the landlord. This goes for any repairs or housing problems – it gives you proof you have told him. It might also be useful to keep your takeaway receipts, and tell him how much you have spent extra on food as a result of the disrepair. In the letter, explain the situation and give him a reasonable deadline to complete the work or get back to you. If you are not satisfied with his response, or you do not receive one, head to the Student Advice Centre in the Union, and one of their advisers might be able to help.
