JOIN THE LEADERSHIP RACE
FEBRUARY 2011 News // Mind your Head // The Leadership Race // Summer Ball // School Reps // House Hunting
We’re only half way through our year ‘in office’ but it’s already time to start thinking about the future. That’s because the beginning of February sees the opening of nominations for next year’s student executive, giving every one of you the chance to join the Leadership Race in March. If you’re keen to take on one of the six positions and lead 32,000 students, or just want to know what it’s all about and why your vote is important, turn to pages 8 to 9.
That’s not all we’ve got going on this month though: it’s LGBT History Month, we’ve got the Mind your Head exhibition taking place and there’s a great line up of events for International Cultural Festival too. For a lot of people of course, February means the search for housing begins – if that includes you then don’t miss Paul's housing advice on pages 14 to15. Your Exec (L-R Above) Tim, Rachel, Paul, Marcus, Elliot & Jack

Ideas going to Referendum: Vote 'YES' or 'NO' to the following ideas: Two ideas are being put to the vote this month, giving you the chance to have your say about your union. Both ideas were submitted by students, and if they pass will be implemented:
Better Union Idea 1: Should the Union seek to stop selling (and cut off its association) with the Coca-Cola company? Better Union Idea 2: Should the Union actively promote lift sharing? No consensus was reached on these ideas at the last forum meetings, so it’s now down to you to decide if they become policy. It’s no secret that studying for a degree can be stressful, but what if it all becomes too much?
With the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans) community more visible in today’s society than ever, it’s easy to forget it has a history thousands of years old involving millions of people. During LGBT History Month we’ll be looking at the history of the community to learn how its contributions have helped shape the world we see today. There are events planned throughout the month. We’ll be using the Kinsey Scale to dispel the myth of a sexuality binary and holding Body Beautiful to reject the idea that you have to conform to look good.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS
Please visit www.leedsuniversity union.org.uk/LGBThistorymonth for more information.
Jack Cheyette Welfare Officer
Students are more likely than others their age to experience mental health problems, so it’s important you know where you can turn if you need support. But it’s also important you know the steps you can take to make work-related problems less likely to happen at all.
Who can I turn to? There are a number of people you can turn to, whether you just need someone to talk to or help with a specific issue.

Unipol, now in your Union Save money, save energy Think you could be saving money on bills but not sure where to start? Want to know more about making your student house environmentally friendly? Need help persuading your landlord to make changes? The Student Advice Centre will be answering all these questions and more in February. For more information, see the Advice Centre website www.leedsuniversityunion. org.uk/helpandadvice and look out for publicity of session details. 6 The Gist
The new Unipol drop-in bureau in the Union makes accessing housing advice even easier. If you need help on matters such as contracts, disrepair or deposits, just drop-in without appointment on weekdays from 10.00am to 4.00pm. As a non-profit charitable company, Unipol have a well established reputation in Leeds for helping students make the right choices through offering expert, pressure-free advice.

Mind Matters Society
Nighline is open every night from 8.00pm to 8.00am. Please call 0113 380 1381 if you would like to speak to somebody or 0113 380 1380 for general information. You can also email at nightline@luu.ac.uk.
Spot the warning signs We’re all different, and all have different responses to high pressure situations, but if you find yourself sick with worry, unable to sleep at night and prone to breaking down in tears without the slightest provocation, talking to someone might help.
Keep fit There’s truth in the saying 'healthy body healthy mind', so make sure you look after yourself physically. That means avoiding the temptation to switch to low effort junk food and keeping up the exercise.
Don't procrastinate Break the habit of leaving things too late, it’s a guaranteed way to multiply the pressure. Don’t envy the guy who takes exams and essays in his stride – be him.
Take a break Using alcohol or drugs to take the edge off when it’s all getting too much is an easy route to dependence… not to mention an unbalanced mood. Unwinding by planning breaks away from your work is a more effective, and safer, way of keeping your head happy.

When students asked for longer library opening hours ahead of exams, the Exec secured them. When students said they needed a cash machine in the Worsley building, the Exec got one. And when the Exec worked with the police to prevent burglaries in Hyde Park, they achieved a reduction of 50%!
The Positions Any student at Leeds can stand for any of the six positions on the Exec, each with its own remit, these include the:
• •
union
• • • •
Education Officer Communications and Internal Affairs Officer Welfare Officer Equality and Diversity Officer Community Officer Activities Officer
There’s no interview, no application forms and no qualifications required. Instead you’ll take part in a leadership race during which you’ll need to convince campus that you’re the right person for the job.
Being an Exec Officer Jack Cheyette Welfare Officer
"Not only do you learn skills to being a student political leader, you also learn to be a trustee of a charity, a strong public speaker, a creative campaigner and a representative to the University and wider community. Not many people can say before they’ve graduated that they’ve been responsible for a £10 million charity, represented 32,000 students and headed up an organisation with 200 full-time staff. Being an Exec officer is the best learning experience you could ask for.”
Paul Gold Community Officer
join the race to lead a union of 32,000 students "It’s definitely a challenge - my role has stretched me, and often takes me out of my comfort zone. But by doing so it has given me opportunities I might never have had until much later in life. I’ve gained a feel of what it really means to make decisions on behalf of an organisation representing thousands of people, with real consequences.
It could be you that makes us different, that drives us forward, that makes us a better students’ union. It could be you forming a part of next year’s Student Executive, helping to lead a £10M charitable organisation. Leading 32,000 students isn’t easy, but every year we spend nearly £100,000 paying six students to take the helm and do just that. Elected by students at Leeds, the Exec are the face of the Union when we make the headlines and the people who make things happen here every day through campaigning, representing and decision-making. 8 The Gist
When students voted to oppose proposals to raise tuition fees, the Exec led 700 people to the national demo in London, received a standing ovation after delivering a speech to Leeds City Council, and spoke out again and again in both regional and national media.

Searching for School Reps BECOME A SCHOOL REP This year’s reps have revolutionised the level of academic support we provide. Find out how to join next year’s team. Why do we have school reps? The School Rep system ensures that students have their say within the University. There are over 1,000 student reps involved across the University, speaking up for their peers at every level from tutor groups to University Senate - and this number is growing every year.
What does a school rep do? The reps attend Student Staff Forums, School Learning and Teaching Committees, and Faculty level meetings, as well as attending the Union’s new ‘Better University’ forum. They work closely with Union Course Reps in their school to provide a clear and effective channel of communication between students and staff, ensuring that students have their say in their education.
How can I become a school rep? We’re recruiting for school reps for next year now! You can nominate yourself from Monday 21st February, simply visit: www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/haveyour say/courseandschoolreps.
What have school reps achieved this year? Here are a few examples of some of the great work done by our school reps so far...
Robyn Brockie, UG School Rep for Education
Jenny Leigh 2nd Year of Adult Nursing Healthcare School Rep Students on various professional courses felt very segregated from one another, so Jenny set up weekly drop-ins to help students meet each other.
Mbongeni Zwangobani 2nd Year Mathematics with Finance Mathemaics and Physical Sciences School Rep Mbongeni was told by students that their lecturers were enforcing a policy that prevented them from entering lectures if they arrived even a few minutes late. He took this feedback to his department, outlining how problematic the policy was for students, and got it revoked. Ben Jackson, 3rd Year Biology, Biology School Rep
Ruby Kirby 2nd Year Theatre and Performance Performance and Cultural Industries School Rep Ruby campaigned after feedback that the University’s Virtual Learning Environment wasn’t very engaging for PCI students. They now have control of several pages to promote student-led activities. Ben Jackson 3rd Year Biology Biology School Rep Ben helped students on the discontinuing Genetics course by keeping them informed and they were invited to meet regularly with the Dean of Learning and Teaching for updates and support.

“Being a School Rep has been a really rewarding experience. I've had the opportunity to attend meetings I would never normally have seen - including Senate which involves some of the biggest names in the University. I’ve been responsible for keeping student views at the heart of debates ranging from changes to library services at faculty meetings to challenging the proposed changes to bursaries at Senate.”
David Bleasdale 3rd Year Chemistry Chemistry School Rep Students had issues with not getting lab manuals in time, David took the issue to a Student Staff Forum- it has now been fixed. Polly Goddard 2nd Year English Language and Literature English School Rep Students were impressed with how quickly staff extended opening hours for them following intervention by Polly.

Improvements Paul Gold Community Officer Contracts Don’t just read your contract – get it checked! The Student Advice Centre offer a free service that will help you understand all the terms and conditions, and your responsibilities and rights, plus they’ll tell you what they know about your landlord! You can drop in to the Student Advice centre between 9.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. NO RUSH TO SIGN!

House hunting is difficult enough - finding the right people, price and location – without having to worry about bad landlords too. Community Officer, Paul Gold has the advice you need to make taking the right decisions easier.
www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk
Stick with the Code LUU recommends you go with a Unipol Code of Standards landlord, and I do too. Unipol set out standards for landlords to follow, such as timescales for repairs. They also have a complaints process if anything goes wrong.
Speak to the tenants (privately!)
The scheme ensures any disputes over deductions at the end of the tenancy are handled fairly and properly.
What’s the landlord’s like? Have they had any problems? Why are they leaving? How much rent do they pay?
More info at www.leedsuniversityunion.org. uk/helpandadvice/housing/deposits/.
Slow but steady
Ask about signing fees before going on viewings – it’s not uncommon for them to be sprung on people just as they’re ready to sign the paperwork. Signing fees are not uncommon but do vary significantly. It’s important to take them into the calculation when you’re working out how much you can afford to pay. Remember – a deposit is returned when you move out, but a signing fee isn’t!
14 The Gist
If it’s not in the contract you can’t prove the landlord agreed to it later on!
Make sure your deposit is being protected in a deposit protection scheme. It’s a legal requirement that your landlord does it, but it’s important to check. Ask your landlord to confirm in writing which protection scheme is being used within 14 days of payment.
Signing Fees
ADVICE FROM YOUR COMMUNiTY OFFICER, PAUL GOLD
Don’t rely on verbal agreements or promises – insist on everything being written into the contract. An agreed completion date is essential too, or you might find that new mattress only arrives as you’re packing up to move out!
www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk
Good landlords do exist, but why risk relying on their opinion when you’re about to make such a big commitment? Get some honest info by grilling the people who currently live there instead.
It’s a myth that there’s a shortage of accommodation – in fact there are thousands of spare bedrooms left in the student areas of Leeds every year. Hold back and you’ll be in a better position to negotiate. For more help email the Student Advice Centre at advice@luu.leeds.ac.uk, call 0113 380 1290 or pop into the office on the first floor of the Union building. You can also get help and advice from Unipol. Find their new drop in centre on level -1 of the Union building.
