THANK YOU TO EVERYONE AT LUU... There have been a lot of great moments this year. We started with exciting changes to the Union building, but since then there's been progress across the board that has really defined the role of a modern students' union. Involvement in our clubs and societies continued to grow, showing the social side of the Union is stronger than ever, but we also made massive progress in the delivery of effective leadership and representation. Just look at the outcomes we delivered across campus (pg 14) for a glimpse of the hundreds of ways we've made studying at Leeds better, look at the outcomes our democratic system has produced (page 16) to see the changes that have come directly from your ideas, and look at what we've been

working on (page 12) to see why an elected leadership are so important! Thanks to every single one of you who voted in this year's Leadership Race. It was amazing to see 8,000 people taking an interest in the future leaders of our union. The end of term isn't too far away now, which means we're really busy finishing what we've started, ready for your newly elected Leadership to begin in June. Turn to page 5 to be introduced to them. New Menu and Summer Fete in the Terrace Friday 6th May sees the Terrace play host to its annual Summer Fête. Join the Terrace team in an all day event with BBQ, stalls and entertainment. Building works In 2009 you told us that services like the Student Advice Centre and Student Activities were difficult to find. Over Easter we started a phase of building work to improve the first floor and make these services easier to access. We've refurbished our meeting rooms, opened up the first floor balcony and made new space outside the Old Bar. Thank you to everyone who ran, campaigned or voted in this year's Leadership Race and helped to make it a record-breaking success. Over 8,000 voters took part this year (in the Leadership Race plus NUS Delegate Elections) helping us to smash our voting targets and elect a representative student leadership.

The Old Bar have sold over 27,593 pints of Carlsberg this year. The profit from all these pints goes back into providing student services at LUU.

Housing contracts have been checked by the Student Advice Centre and Unipol so far in 2011 ensuring students get a fair deal.

7 & 2,300 LSTV produced over 90 programmes this year. They also raised a whopping ÂŁ2,300 for Children in Need by recording their own song 'Think About It (Give a Pound)'. LSTV recently won seven awards at the National Student TV Awards (NaSTA) including best broadcaster for the 3rd year in a row!

558 The LUU Community Reps have dedicated 558 hours so far to work in the community. The reps have been working with the Royal Park Community Consortium campaigning to save the building for community use. They have been raising awareness of Kirkgate market through the Shop Local Campaign encouraging students to use local businesses. Look out for the 'Love Hyde Park' campaign later in the year which encourages positive use of Woodhouse Moor.

2010/11 Celebrating our year in numbers A collection of some of your success stories and achievements across Leeds University Union.

1,730 You bought 1,730 medium cappuccinos from the Terrace Bar this year making it your favourite type of coffee! All the money from everything bought in our shops and bars goes back into providing services for you.

5,500 The Hiking Club have walked around 5,500 miles (nearly 8,900km). If the moon is 24,000km away, Hiking club would be a third of the way there!

The Student Advice Centre, in conjunction with the NHS Leeds Primary Care Trust bought 29,520 condoms for students to help promote safe sex. Free condoms are available from the Student Advice Centre.

The Japanese Society folded 1,000 Japanese Origami cranes in their Tanabata Festival.

Homed raised £266.07 in Semester one and donated several bags of clothing and other items to the hostels they volunteer at.

This year RAG are hoping to raise a total of over £250,000, this would make it their highest ever total. This year RAG and its 675 members are donating to over 60 charities. RAG have hosted 5 raids, 2 speed dating events and have had over 526 participants in their international/extreme events.

The Irish Dance Society sent 103 dancers to perform at five different locations across Leeds to celebrate St. Patrick's Day this year.

200 Anime watched over 200 Anime episodes. They also added over 600 volumes of manga to their lending library this year.

500 The STAR volunteers volunteered for over 500 hours (50 hours a week) over three weekly projects. STAR also set up a new volunteering project aiming to renovate second-hand bikes and donate them to asylum seekers and refugees. They secured £1,500 to fund the project and have so far received 10 bikes.

£5,000 Dance Expose sold over 900 tickets for their February show 'The Oscars' raising approximately £5,000. They performed 28 dances in the show.

The Debating Society have moved up from 42nd to 22nd in the EU debating rankings.

10,000 Over 10,000 students from Leeds Uni and Leeds Met attended the 2010 Rugby Union Varsity Finale match at Headingley Stadium.

Our year so far... Your Student Executive Mind Your Head

Jack organised the Mind Your Head campaign, raising awareness of how common mental health problems are. The campaign was a great success, and led to a 125% increase in the number of students visiting the Counselling Centre.

Tim achieved the feat of arranging for over 120 clubs and societies to be photographed in one day at the beginning of the year to promote the amazing range of groups within your union. Even more impressive was the amazing range of props that made it into the photos – from kayaks to banana costumes.

Worsley Building As part of Rachel’s commitment to do more for students outside of the Union building, she listened to students based in the Worsley Building and secured a cash machine and water fountain for the Airport Lounge. She’s now working to improve the Health Sciences Library opening hours.

£1 Bus Fares Paul secured success for students when First Buses agreed to reduce ticket prices between Headingley and the University to just £1. The move came following a sustained campaign for better service that saw hundreds of students petition First to take action. Paul’s work on this issue continues, and will hopefully see the changes expanded to include a wider area. 12 The Gist

Global Cafe Marcus worked with the University's International Office to make the Global Café a huge hit this year. Now hosted in the Union building, Global Cafe has been really successful, bringing together hundreds of students from around the world to meet with like-minded people. Themed events have made Global Café even more special - last month's special guests included a meerkat and python, all looked after by a professional animal handler.

Climate Week Paul brought Climate Week to a bigger audience than ever before this year – the Love Food Hate Waste event outside the Union fed 1,000 www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk

students for free with the amount of food a typical household throws away in a year. All the food was saved from the bin and delivered a strong message about how much food we waste in the UK.

Student Choice Awards This year, Jack and Elliot expanded the I Love My Personal Tutor awards to include awards for teaching and representation too. The Student Choice awards as they’re now known are set to be a huge success – with nearly 1,000 nominations being submitted across campus. The awards are a great way to recognise the dedication of staff and reps, and are a great way to showcase best practice at Leeds.

Food Waste Recycling Paul worked with the Essentials team to implement a new student idea – to recycle our edible waste by donating it to homeless shelters in Leeds. Every evening the Nightbus now takes food that can no longer be sold and puts it to good use.

Fees The Exec worked together to lead 13 coaches of Leeds students to the London demo against higher fees, made national television appearances, lobbied MPs and delivered a deputation to Leeds City Council, gaining their support. The government majority was reduced from 84 to just 21, but the campaign against higher fees didn’t succeed. Since then, Elliot and Rachel have been working with the University to deliver a partnership agreement that acts as a useful tool for both staff and students, and curriculum that sets Leeds apart and meets students' needs. They're also working with Leeds City Council alongside the University to ensure fair access arrangements are put in place to support future students. All the stuff we’ve done... Become a School Rep for 2011 to 2012: School Reps are there to voice your views within your school. By acting as your representative and working closely with Course Reps, they provide clear and effective communication between students and staff, ensuring you have a say about your education. They attend forums and sit on committees, making sure your interests are served by the decisions being made. Having representatives in your school or on your course makes a real difference. This year has been a real success, with over five hundred changes being implemented by School and Course Reps across the University. Here we’ve collected a few of the achievements to give you a snapshot of the progress being made. Sociology PG Sanne Velthuis Part-time fee increases were raised at the Student Staff Forum. Many staff and students were unaware of the changes and fees were returned to the original level.

POLIS Josh Saxby Submission requirements for assessed work were unclear, so a new guide is being created to respond to feedback from students.

European Languages Rachel Albinson A successful campaign resulted in the EU year abroad funding being retained.

School of Law Richard Quayle Richard helped LawSoc when they ran a session for mooting attended by over 250 people.

Geography Charlotte Howman Students have been involved in rewriting the curriculum.

PCI Gavin Rogers A shortage of core texts has been resolved by the school acquiring licenses to photocopy relevant pages which are placed on the VLE for all students.

Faculty of Biological Science Arya Gupta Module assessment criteria have been improved – there was a page limit in place rather than a word limit, so a font size has been introduced for fairness.

Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies Gaia Rosenberg The most popular modules have been duplicated to improve access to those that are regularly oversubscribed.

Chemistry David Bleasdale Lab sessions have been extended with more equipment available to reduce long waiting times.

Music Caroline O Brien Lecturers have agreed to always use slides, and anonymous complaints through a suggestion box are working really well.

Transport Studies PG John Buckell After student request, there is to be changes in the MSc Sustainability module, as of next year (essentially module adjustment).

Medicine Clare Bird We worked with the department to bring a cash machine and water fountain to the Worsley Building. We’re now working to improve the opening hours of the Health Sciences library.

Should we celebrate our achievements with a trophy cabinet?

Should we lobby against proposed policy on HMOs in Leeds?

Our teams' successes mean we have an impressive collection of awards and trophies to display. We're working on making this happen and should have them on display in the next month.

In April we led a deputation to Leeds City Council opposing plans to restrict new houses under multiple occupancy (HMOs) on the grounds that they will reduce the amount of affordable accommodation in Leeds and discriminate against lower income groups including students.

Better Union:

Should the Union renew its Nestlé boycott? We've not sold Nestlé within the Union since 1989, and the idea has been renewed every three years since. This year's renewal will keep the boycott in place until 2013.

Every year, during June and July, thousands of student move around or away from Leeds. This big move can cause a massive amount of rubbish to be left on the streets in residential areas. You can help to stop this happening by starting to get rid of your unwanted stuff and rubbish early. Just going to the bottle bank early, or donating stuff to Green Streets will make a huge difference.

Should LUU offer solidarity to community organisations and their bids for public spaces? Better University:

We gave our full support to the Royal Park Community Consortium's bid for Royal Park Primary School. The consortium's bid was successful and now need to raise £750,000 to achieve their goals. Since pledging out support, there's been involvement from Union Community Reps in the project, as well as fundraising events to help achieve the target.

Should we oppose a rise in tuition fees and campaign on HE funding?

Results of Better Union, Better University and Better Leeds Forums so far...

We campaigned against tuition fees by organising coaches to the London demo, coordinating the march in Leeds, delivering impassioned deputations to Leeds City Council that gained their support, and communicating your views to the University.

If you live in halls, then there will be a designated point on site where you can donate these unwanted items to Green Streets.

Should the Union promote a more positive approach to Woodhouse Moor to obtain Green Flag status?

Should we campaign for cheaper buses?

Green Flag status is awarded to the best green spaces in the country. Consultation is already underway to establish how we can deliver a space that best serves the community. Once that's complete we're hoping to start fundraising to turn those hopes into reality.

Our campaign for a better service on Leeds buses delivered success this year when First Buses agreed to reduce bus fairs to £1 between Headingley and the University. Lobbying is continuing as we work to improve fairs for all Leeds students.
