It’s a real honour to be given the inside column for the final Gist of the year, our special Celebrate edition. We wanted to showcase as much of the Union as we could in this final issue. In particular we wanted to celebrate all of you who are involved with LUU and at the same time encourage those of you that aren’t that it’s time to change that! Getting involved in LUU has given me so much. I’ll miss the day to day involvement of what I regard as one of the most privileged jobs I could have hoped for. Most key of all though, I’ll miss the people. I’ll miss your passion that makes it so easy for me to want to get things done for you. Whether it’s been those of you who spend your time preparing for a

debate at Union Council, putting on performances in the Riley, scoring that try up at Weetwood, organising a charity event for other students to spend 24 hours touching a car, or the energy in the Leeds Student office on a Thursday night. It all builds up, along with so many others, into a series of memories all centred around LUU that’ll last forever. So here’s to Celebrate Week 2010 - a time to acknowledge and congratulate our many dedicated individuals in LUU. I couldn’t be more genuine when I say that we’ve got a lot to celebrate and be proud of. Enjoy this issue of the Gist - let it serve as a reminder of what you did this year. Thanks to everyone I’ve met this year, it’s been the greatest job anyone could ask for.

Whether you’re a member of a sports club, society or volunteering group, you’re on a residents’ committee, or you’re a community or academic rep, you contribute to making us the best students’ union in the country. During Celebrate Week we recognise the commitment of those involved, and highlight the successes and achievements from throughout the year.

Here, in this special ‘Celebrate’ edition of the Gist, you can find out why we’re so proud, and discover why getting involved has so much to offer.

“It was a proud moment when there was a reduction in burglaries in the area.”

For a full list of clubs and societies at LUU, please visit www.leedsuniversityunion. org.uk/clubsandsocieties/ atozlist. Remember, you can join any one of these groups anytime throughout the year.

Introducing... Your New Exec! What was your highlight of the year? Rachel: Campaigning

week for the Exec elections. I got the opportunity to speak to such a wide variety of people across campus - it was like Freshers’ Week all over again.

Tim: Seeing many of the

volunteering societies grow and develop in my role as Volunteering Rep.

Paul: Seeing the

student participation on Remembrance Day. It’s not often that so many people can be united behind one cause.

Jack: Definitely LUU Varsity

this year, completely rinsing the Met at the Rugby and watching their supporters gradually get quieter throughout the match... it was classic!

Elliot: International

Cultural Festival. Seeing the amazing events put on

20 The Gist

by the societies and how welcoming they were was fantastic!

Marcus: I think that

participating in my sixth and final Stage Musical Society show (Footloose) and receiving my lifetime members’ hoodie have to be my personal favourites.

What can students look forward to next year? Rachel: I want to try and include everyone across campus in what we offer by taking LUU services into different buildings around campus. Tim: There’ll be even

more activities on offer. This means more fun, more new experiences and more ways to help you stand out in the job market.

Paul: The Union is only as

good as the students that use it, so I’m looking forward to a year when more students than ever use our

services and realise their own potential.

Jack: A new look Union.

The building will be getting a summer revamp, allowing space for lots of interesting activities to take place in the year ahead.

Elliot: I want to make sure the University hears what we have to say, and makes the improvements we want to see - from the libraries to personal tutoring. Marcus: Getting the Equality and Diversity Celebration Board up and running so that minority groups can advertise their celebrations and the rest of the student population can learn about and appreciate the diversity that LUU has to offer. Leave Leeds Tidy

Every year, during June and July, thousands of students move around or away from Leeds. This big move can cause a massive amount of rubbish to be left on the streets of residential areas. Stop this from happening this year and help to keep Leeds tidy. Leave Leeds Tidy is here to help along the way with tips, and information on services that can make moving out and leaving Leeds tidy easier for you. Check out www.leaveleedstidy.com

Use your bag!

If you have reusable items that you don’t want, look out for a Green Streets bag through your letter box at the start of May. Green Streets will be collecting any unwanted items you might have in these collection bags on:

Collection Dates: 15th May, 5th June, 20th June, 27th June, 30th June and 1st July.

Changeover wardens needed!

If you have some spare time on your hands, why not apply to work as a Changeover Warden. These act as the eyes and ears of Leave Leeds Tidy in the streets. Email leaveleedstidy@luu.leeds. ac.uk for more information or an application form. Deadline for applications is on Friday April 23rd.
