Each one of Chicago’s 77 neighborhoods has its unique and local charms and plenty of local businesses to explore. August is Black Owned Business Month, so make sure to check out these neighborhoods and their hottest of spots. HYDE PARK Hyde Park is home to so many iconic events, places, and people: the 1893 Columbian Exposition, the University of Chicago, former President Barack Obama, and the Museum of Science and Industry, to name just a few. Explore the largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere, get lost on some of the most stunning campuses in the world or visit one of Hyde Park’s other classics: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House (a UNESCO World Heritage Site!), the DuSable Museum, the Oriental Institute, and many more iconic places. Don’t forget to check out Yoko Ono’s only permanent art installation in the US, Skylanding, in the Garden of the Phoenix.
EAT & DRINK You can eat and drink your way through Hyde Park all day long. Start in the morning with a stop at Valois, one of Barack Obama’s favorite breakfast spots. PULLMAN DISTRICT You may have heard about the Pullman Historic District being Chicago’s first National Monument. Consider this historic neighborhood a wellpreserved time capsule that will transport you all the way back to the 1880s. Think striking brick buildings, a fascinating history, and picture-perfect streets. The country’s first planned industrial town was built by luxury rail car tycoon George Pullman for his employees (who later kicked off the American labor movement in protest of Pullman raising rents). The district included more than 1,500 companyowned houses, a church, a school, and a building that housed offices, stores, a library, and a bank. Hungry for more details? Check out the brand new Visitors Center or immerse yourself in the neighborhood’s history by taking one of the guided or self-guided tours that embark from Pullman Exhibit Hall. Spending time by the water when temperatures rise is always a good idea. And we cannot think of a better way to spend a hot summer day than to go for a stroll on the Riverwalk.
Tiny Tapp & Tiny Café Tiny Tapp & Tiny Café delivers a genuine neighborhood experience in the heart of downtown. The Café specializes in freshly brewed coffee from locally sourced beans, lemonade, fresh squeezed orange juice, pastries, and quality ice cream. The Tapp is a lively gathering place featuring mouthwatering cocktails, a good selection of wines, and craft beer on tap. Try Henry’s Holiday frozen cocktail, the perfect summer drink. The contemporary American menu includes hearty sandwiches, sides, and starters such as the delectable Street Corn Nachos.
The Riverwalk is truly Chicago’s second waterfront. Chicagoans have long treasured our beautiful lakefront, but now, more than ever, we are spending time close to our river. This is new because Chicago long ignored its river. But the Chicago River has undergone a major transformation. There is life in and along the river once again, including dozens of species of fish, many birds…and happy humans. Enjoy meandering the continuous scenic parkway that is the Riverwalk, enjoying the views of Chicago’s famed architecture while enjoying many other pleasures: food, drink, shade trees, flowers, music, art. The design of the Riverwalk is unique. From State Street to the west, between every two bridges is a section called a “room.” These inviting public spaces create different experiences, from dining to boating to–believe it or not–fishing. Windy City Smokeout returns to Chicago on August 4-7. It’s the place to be for lovers of great barbecue, bourbon and country music! Live performers include Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, Sam Hunt and Willy Nelson, but there’s also an all-star BBQ chef line-up, including these Chicago-based chefs: TIM COTTINI @ BUB CITY Bub City is Chicago’s top destination for live country music, whiskey and barbecue. Chef Tim Cottini's favorite barbecue dish is the 18 Hour Smoked Brisket, a dish that takes finesse to execute and requires a handson approach to ensure that each piece is up to the restaurant's high standards. Chef also loves the Brisket Burnt Ends, cooked in housemade BBQ sauce for an additional 4 hours until the meat caramelizes, giving it a crispy exterior with a moist and flavorful interior.

DAVE BONNER @ GREEN STREET SMOKED MEATS Located down a charming brick paved alley in the West Loop, the nationally acclaimed Green Street Smoked Meats beckons guests with rock music and house-smoked, Central Texas-inspired BBQ, served at the counter in a warehouse-style restaurant. The curated menu focuses on staples of backyard BBQ, including brisket, beef short ribs, and chicken legs, along with rich pork belly and smoked salmon. An array of vegetable-centric side dishes includes a savory potato salad, sweet and nutty broccoli salad, and the popular Frito pie. Guests enjoy a selection of specially chosen craft beers and BBQ-friendly cocktail pairings.

D’Andre Carter is no stranger to the food world. The Chicago-based chef ran a Michelin-starred kitchen, then left fine dining to strike out on his own. He first hosted pop-up dinners, then started a full-service catering company, and finally launched Soul & Smoke. Carter describes himself as a chef first, and pitmaster second—a careful and elevated approach to the barbecue experience that makes Soul & Smoke unique. Chef D'Andre: "I connect most with our rib tips because I've been eating them since early childhood. We asked our concierge friends about the best wings and added a few of our own favorites to the list. Justin Ivie, Courtyard Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile “I always recommend the Firecracker Wings at Jake Melnick's to our guests. They're a perfect blend of sweet and spicy.” Jake Melnick’s has been a favorite spot for locals since opening twenty years ago. The restaurant & sports bar’s proximity to bustling Michigan Avenue has also made it a top dining and drinking destination for tourists, especially during the summer months. The wings come in so many different flavors that you will have to come back to try more!
Flor Sigaran, BuildingHub Concierge “My favorites are the Offset Wings at Offset BBQ on California Avenue. They have great wings; served with pickled carrots and your choice of sauce. Definitely try the white sauce!”

They’re ‘lollipop style’, which makes them larger than average chicken wings, and not quite as messy. The sweet glaze on top of the spice gives them a great flavor.”
Hooters With over 300 locations, Hooters is one of the best-known restaurant chains in the country. And they happen to be renowned for their … chicken wings! Monk’s Pub Monk’s is one of my favorite low-key hang-outs in the Loop. They always have a great selection of beers on tap and food classics on the menu. I love spicy stuff, so I am a sucker for their Mango Habanero chicken wings. But they also have the Traditional Buffalo Wings as well as the vegan Cauliflower Wings or the boneless wings if you don’t like gnawing! Surplus: the staff at Monk’s simply rocks!
Wishbone Located in the West Loop, Wishbone serves delicious southern cuisine. The spacious location is suitable for large parties. Enjoy the lunch, dinner, and brunch menus with dishes like shrimp and grits, catfish, and gumbo.

Ed Debevic’s Try out Chicago’s famous retro-themed diner! Ed Debevic’s is sure to be one of your most unique dining experiences. Your servers will play 60’s inspired characters while you enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner. You can’t forget the kids menu with tasty hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken tenders!
Fatso’s Last Stand Fatso’s Last Stand takes the classic hot dog stand to the next level. At its two locations in Ukrainian Village or Lincoln park, get a taste of a Fatso Burger, mac and cheese, or char dogs in an inviting outdoor space.
Lou Mitchell’s Stax Cafe This cafe specializes in breakfast classics with fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Millennium Hall Millennium Hall is a new multiconcept dining experience that opened in Millennium Park earlier this summer. Napolita is the Italian restaurant that opened right under Chicago's most famous attraction, Cloud Gate AKA The Bean. Portillo’s Many locals will agree you haven’t experienced Chicago until you go to Portillo’s. With the first location opening in 1963, this historical restaurant has become synonymous with Chicago. Try Chicago classics like Italian beef and a Chicago style garden dog. Portillo's is great for gatherings and experiencing Chicago’s history through food.
Pinstripes Food isn’t the only thing you will enjoy at Pinstripes. This downtown restaurant offers Italian American cuisine alongside bowling and bocce. Strike some pins as you chow down on wings, pizza, sandwiches, and more.
Savor breakfast and lunch at this diner on historic Route 66. Lou Mitchell’s has pancakes, waffles, a wide variety of omelets, and donut holes. Ladies and children will even receive boxes of milk duds inspired by Greek hospitality!
Palace Grill If you’re a family of Blackhawks fans this is the restaurant for you. Palace Grill has been serving the community since 1938 and is just a short walk away from the United Center. Looking to simply soak in the beauty of nature? Garfield Park on the West Side of Chicago is especially popular for its Conservatory, which houses over 100,000 plants and a play area for little ones. Whether you want to bask in the glorious heat of summer or cool down in the A/C, Chicago has a myriad of options for movie buffs (or casual viewers), so be sure to check if your favorite movie is playing in a park or theater near you. Millennium Park Millennium Park is one of the most iconic areas of Chicago, so what better place to spread out a blanket and relax? Throughout July and August, Millennium Park will be screening recent movies like “Encanto” and “In the Heights,” along with classics like “Dirty Dancing” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.”

The Music Box Theater But for a truly unique experience, try checking out one of Chicago’s old school movie theaters. They might not have the more recent releases, but the off-beat movies and beautiful architecture make for a summer adventure. The Music Box Theater features a gorgeous starry ceiling and interactive viewer experiences with midnight showings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” and “The Room,” two cult classics that elevate the movie-watching experience.
