EXPLORE
Experience Summer on the Riverwalk By Leentje De Leeuw
Spending time by the water when temperatures rise is always a good idea. And we cannot think of a better way to spend a hot summer day than to go for a stroll on the Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is truly Chicago’s second waterfront. Chicagoans have long treasured our beautiful lakefront, but now, more than ever, we are spending time close to our river. This is new because Chicago long ignored its river. But the Chicago River has undergone a major transformation. There is life in and along the river once again, including dozens of species of fish, many birds…and happy humans. Enjoy meandering the continuous scenic parkway that is the Riverwalk, enjoying the views of Chicago’s famed architecture while enjoying many other pleasures: food, drink, shade trees, flowers, music, art. The design of the Riverwalk is unique. From State Street to the west, between every two bridges is a section called a “room.” These inviting public spaces create different experiences, from dining to boating to–believe it or not–fishing. The award-winning Chicago Riverwalk offers many amenities. Accessibility is one of the priorities. Every third room on the Riverwalk has a well-designed ramp. And public art is on show all along the Riverwalk, much of it symbolizing the story of Chicago and its river. You can choose to experience the Riverwalk from the water by renting a kayak. Or you may decide to stay on shore and head to one of the most scenic bars and restaurants in the city. Relax and take it all in. We selected four of our favorite places to grab a bite, enjoy a drink, and watch all the boats go by. 6 | CONCIERGE PREFERRED

Here are some of the best shops around the city to get a scoop or a cone: Cone This family-owned ice cream shop in West Loop is serving up quality, European soft serve and hand-scooped ice cream with an Irish flair…and creative flourishes. If you’re craving something magical, try Cone’s “The Shamrock,” topped with Lucky Charms.

With flavors like Pina Colada, Pony Cotton Candy, Chicago Mix, along with delicious vegan options, you’re guaranteed to find something that makes you smile. Eli’s Ark in Wicker Park has the cutest gelato cones anywhere. Scoops morph into koalas, bears, monkeys, or unicorns. You choose your flavor and your favorite animal. You can even stack them up. Eli’s offers signature flavors such as: Pretty in Pink, Dolce and Banana, and Mint-To-Be.
Lickity Split The name says it all. Lickity Split’s rich frozen custard is delicious on its own or you can indulge in a Banana Split or Tasty Turtle sundae. If you dare, try an “OMG,” frozen custard blended with brownies, hot fudge, and a smidge of peanut butter.

Festivals ARE BACK
Concierges weigh in on their favorite festivals By Leentje De Leeuw
Everybody knows Lollapalooza, Pitchfork, North Coast, and Riot Fest, but there are so many other COOL festivals coming back to Chicago this summer. We asked our beloved concierges to tell us about their favorite festivals. “This is a tough one because there are so many festivals in June and July! I’m going to go with Grant Park Music Festival. Where else can you experience contemporary, classical and Broadway in the city’s best backyard? For free!” (Morgan Cohen - Sofitel Magnificent Mile) “My favorite festival is Do Division, always a really fun time!” (Terri Kolzow - The Palmolive Building) “My favorite festival is the St. George Greek Orthodox Chicago Greek Festival in conjunction with Sheffield Fest!” (Susan Alexander - Fashion Outlets of Chicago)
“The dragon boat race has been sponsored by the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce for 20 years. It takes place this year at Ping Tom Memorial Park in Chinatown on Saturday, June 25, 2022. Chinese dragon boat racing dates back over 2,000 years and is a popular sport among Chinese and Asian communities all over the world. The Chicago Dragon Boat Race for Literacy is a family fun activity which carries on the tradition of dragon boat racing, promotes Asian culture and supports neighborhood literacy programs.” “Chinatown Summer Fair celebrates its 43rd year this summer on July 30-31, 2022. Wentworth Avenue from Cermak to 24th Place will be closed to traffic on both days and filled with street vendors selling wares and food, entertainment on stage, and activities for all ages.”

Summer Fun for Kids (OF ALL AGES) By Leen Yassine
Chicago comes alive in the summertime! There are endless opportunities to enjoy all the city has to offer outdoors with the family.
1. Lincoln Park Zoo
3. Navy Pier Fountain
Take advantage of one of the nation’s last free admission zoos this summer. Located right in Lincoln Park, the zoo is home to nearly 200 unique animal species from around the world and more than 1,200 plant species. The Lincoln Park Zoo also hosts events throughout the summer, including a campout for all ages June 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Navy Pier is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. Alongside shopping, dining, rides, and games, Navy Pier also features an interactive fountain of its own. Located at the gateway to the Pier, visitors are encouraged to walk through the 100-foot fountain composed of nearly 150 water jets— perfect during Chicago’s hot summer days. Afterwards families can walk the pier, grab food, and take a spin on the ferris wheel.
2. Crown Fountain From its museums to its street murals, Chicago is known for its rich art scene. Crown Fountain is another addition to the city’s world-renowned and vibrant public art collection. The Millennium Park fountain consists of a shallow pool with 50-foot glass block towers facing one another at each end. These two towers display images of Chicago citizens, and at regular intervals, water spouts from their mouths—a modern twist on the traditional gargoyle. While Crown Fountain is fun to look at, it’s even more fun to play in! This interactive piece of art is open to the public and a fan favorite, especially for kids looking to cool down in the summer heat.
4. Shedd Aquarium For families interested in aquatics without actually getting wet, the Shedd Aquarium is an exciting place for kids to cool down, have fun, and learn in the summertime. From sea otters to sting rays and corals to crustaceans, there’s plenty to experience in this dazzling watery wonderland. JUNE-JULY 2022 ISSUE | 31

Happy Hour! By Leentje De Leeuw
DRINK
It’s Happy Hour, ladies and gentlemen! We selected five of our favorite spots to enjoy the best time of the day. Fisk & Co. Monday through Thursday, 4-6 pm
Trivoli Tavern
This downtown Belgian-style mussels and beer bistro is located at the Kimpton Monaco Hotel and during happy hour features $2 oysters and $6 glasses of wine.
Every day, 4:30-5:30 pm Located in the West Loop in what could very well be the coziest alley in the world, Trivoli Tavern is considered one of the best happy hour spots in town. They offer an extensive $5 food and drink menu. Food wise, we particularly like the Fritto Misto and Pigs in a Blanket. When it comes to the drinks, it is a tough choice between the wines, beers, highballs, and the Teeny Martinis–all just $5 each.
Insider Tip: Come for happy hour, stay for the mussels. They are amazing!
Fado Irish Pub Tuesday through Friday, 5-7 pm Enjoy the luck of the Irish when you make it to happy hour at this River North staple. $7 will get you fish tacos, a big pretzel, and many other savory snacks to soak up the Irish signature cocktails ($8), premium wines ($6), or the happy hour beer ($6).
Insider tip: Make sure to get here by (or even before) opening time, as it may get crowded and happy hour cocktails and food are only served in the bar area.
Insider Tip: Try the Irish Coffee, considered a signature cocktail here.
Tortoise Club
Wednesday through Sunday, 5-7 pm
Violet Hour
Wednesday & Friday, 4:30-6:30 pm We love the $1 oysters and cocktail shrimp at this old school supper club, which is a bit hidden away next to iconic Marina City. On Wednesdays they throw in half price signature cocktails, as well. This is the perfect place to meet up with friends and unwind after a long day.
Considered one of the best cocktail bars in the world, this Wicker Park hotspot serves artisanally crafted drinks in true Prohibition style. During happy hour these classic libations come at a discounted price of $13 each: Daiquiri, Gin Gimlet, Tom Collins, Margarita, Sidecar, Manhattan, Negroni and Vieux Carré.
Insider tip: On Fridays, stay for the live jazz that starts at 7:30 pm
Insider Tip: Do not try them all at once, you can always come back! JUNE-JULY 2022 ISSUE | 35
