Chicago comes alive in the summertime! There are endless opportunities to enjoy all the city has to offer outdoors with the family.
1. Lincoln Park Zoo
Take advantage of one of the nation’s last free admission zoos this summer. Located right in Lincoln Park, the zoo is home to nearly 200 unique animal species from around the world and more than 1,200 plant species. The Lincoln Park Zoo also hosts events throughout the summer, including a campout for all ages June 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. 3. Navy Pier Fountain
Navy Pier is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. Alongside shopping, dining, rides, and games, Navy Pier also features an interactive fountain of its own. Located at the gateway to the Pier, visitors are encouraged to walk through the 100-foot fountain composed of nearly 150 water jets— perfect during Chicago’s hot summer days. Afterwards families can walk the pier, grab food, and take a spin on the ferris wheel.
2. Crown Fountain
From its museums to its street murals, Chicago is known for its rich art scene. Crown Fountain is another addition to the city’s world-renowned and vibrant public art collection. The Millennium Park fountain consists of a shallow pool with 50-foot glass block towers facing one another at each end. These two towers display images of Chicago citizens, and at regular intervals, water spouts from their mouths—a modern twist on the traditional gargoyle. While Crown Fountain is fun to look at, it’s even more fun to play in! This interactive piece of art is open to the public and a fan favorite, especially for kids looking to cool down in the summer heat. 4. Shedd Aquarium
For families interested in aquatics without actually getting wet, the Shedd Aquarium is an exciting place for kids to cool down, have fun, and learn in the summertime. From sea otters to sting rays and corals to crustaceans, there’s plenty to experience in this dazzling watery wonderland.
