H E A LT H PDA: A warning sign for future cardiovascular issues By Susan Tulino Novant Health UVA Health Systems According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 8.5 million people in the United States, including about 20 percent of people over the age of 60, have peripheral arterial disease (PAD). PAD is a common circulatory problem in which a buildup of fatty plaque in the arteries — known as atherosclerosis — causes them to narrow and reduce blood flow to a person’s limbs. Most commonly, symptoms of PAD are felt in the legs and can include: • Muscle pain in thighs, hips and calves after walking or climbing stairs • Fatigue or heaviness in the legs • Sores on the legs or feet that don’t heal • A cold feeling in one foot • A change in the color of the legs • Hair loss on legs or feet • Slower growth of toenails “Patients are often referred to us after they notice pain or feelings of heaviness when they’re doing an activity,” said John Hardy, MD, cardiologist at UVA Cardiology, a department of Novant Health UVA Health System. “Once PAD is diagnosed, we evaluate their risk factors and assess for coronary disease, which is commonly related. About 50 percent of patients with PAD also have coronary disease.” Risk Factors PAD can be exaggerated or worsened by risk factors, including smoking, diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), history of heart attacks or stroke and high cholesterol. People who are overweight, of older age orwho may have limited physical activity are also at heightened risk for developing PAD. The good news is that there are many things a patient can do to control risk factors and lower their chances of developing PAD. According to Hardy, if the patient is a smoker, one of the best ways to prevent PAD is to quit smoking immediately. Exercise and a healthy diet are also effective ways to reduce PAD risk.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) can be exaggerated or worsened by risk factors, including smoking, diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), history of heart attacks or stroke and high cholesterol. The good news is that there are many things a patient can do to control risk factors and lower their chances of developing PAD. Treatment and Prevention But hope is not lost if PAD is diagnosed. Treatment options include: • Walking — Improves exercise capacity by stimulating blood vessel development to naturally bypass blockages. • Medications — Taking medication for high blood pressure or cholesterol can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular events. Some medications can improve blood flow in the legs and pain-free exercise capacity. • Angioplasty/Stenting — A minimally invasive procedure in which a wire mesh tube is inserted to prop open an artery and improve blood flow to leg muscles. • Bypass grafting — A surgical procedure in which a vein from another part of the body is used to “bypass” and reroute blood around a closed artery. “PAD can be stabilized,” said Hardy. “It’s not a death sentence,

but it should be a warning sign that lifestyle changes are needed. If the patient is willing to make healthy lifestyle changes, we can slow down the progress of the disease. Visiting a cardiologist for an evaluation and proper diagnosis is

an important first step.” For more information about Novant Health UVA Health System cardiovascular services, please visit novanthealthuva.org/cliniclocations/uva-cardiology.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Culpeper to begin cleaning up grave sites Culpeper Town employees are beginning spring clean-up in preparation for the upcoming holidays and summer season. They are filling graves, seeding, fertilizing and trimming trees and bushes as necessary. They will begin clearing graves of all non-permanent decorations along with items prohibited by town code. The town administration requests that before Monday, March 16, owners or family members remove all nonpermanent decorations from their graves that they wish to salvage or re-use. There are many memorial wreaths and other floral decorations that have weathered, and these need to be permanently removed. Also, items that are not specifically permitted by town policy must be removed. As a reminder, only two floral arrangements may be placed on a grave at one time and should be securely anchored or in a nonbreakable vase or container; floral displays attached to stones are encouraged and permitted all year. Withered, faded and unsightly flowers will be removed. No floral arrangements are allowed within the moving aisles. The following items are strictly probihibited. • Glass containers. • Garden, commercial or advertising flags. • Fencing and borders. • Wood chips. • Decorative rocks. • All other decorative items not listed above. Cemetery lot owners wishing to install permanent items such as stones, flags, benches, statues or plantings must apply for and obtain a permit or permission from the town prior to installation.

CULPEPER YOUTH SPOTLIGHT

Emily Jenkins and Danielle Fields (Editor's note: This is weekly series highlighting members of Culpeper's Youth Council. To join Culpeper Youth, go to www. culpeperyouth.org to apply.) How much waste do you think actually accumulates in your household ? The average person produces about five pounds of trash each day while a family produces nearly 17.4 pounds. It is important to understand the impact trash and waste has on the environment because it contributes to the build up of pollution and spread of harmful pollutants. Due to these high amounts of waste, encouraging practices of waste prevention and recycling is highly recommended. There are many alternative ways to cut back on the amount of waste produced. For example, instead of using paper towels, invest in reusable towels that can be washed, or instead of plastic straws, use metal straws that can be found in any grocery store and even on Amazon. After analyzing and tracking the

amount of waste accumulated in our households, it really opened up our eyes on how much waste our families actually produced. The No. 1 item that generated the most waste was plastic products such as water bottles, bags, cups and straws. Between both of our families, we wasted about 15 water bottles per day which became about 156 particles of plastic polluting our environment. Research has shown that 80 percent of plastic water bottles do not even get recycled; 38 million plastic bottles go into landfills each year in America alone. For plastic bags, both households wasted about 16 to 20 bags per week. Annually across the globe, about one trillion plastic bags are used, which is nearly 2 million bags being used every minute. As for plastic cups and straws, roughly 12 to 19 accumulated per week in both households. Research data has shown that the world uses 500 billion plastic cups every year, and it is estimated that 500

million straws are used everyday. By continuously using plastic products each day, we are contributing to the build up of waste in landfills and oceans. This harms our society because plastic waste releases harmful chemicals into our soil, water sources, and our ecosystem. To continue with our low waste lifestyle study, we now plan to use alternatives to reduce our amount of waste. We will do so by using reusable shopping bags instead of plastic bags, reusable water bottles instead of plastic cups, metal straws instead of plastic straws, etc. Also, recycling will be better incorporated into our households. As we plan to change our lifestyles, we challenge you to do as well. Consider the amount of waste building up in your household and how using some of these alternatives can help to reduce waste production. By making these changes in our lifestyle now, we are promoting a healthier, safer, and more efficient environment for the future.

Healthy Culpeper hears horrors of human trafficking By Pat Fitzgerald For the Culpeper Times Human trafficking, which is making headlines more and more in the D.C. suburbs, isn't just a problem contained Culpeper's northern neighbors. "The most common myth is, human trafficking is not happening in my community," Joni Langevoort, a volunteer with Just Ask Prevention, told a gathering of the Healthy Culpeper Community Partners last week at Culpeper Baptist Church. "The fact is, it affects every corner of the United States," she said. The Just Ask Prevention program, which began in 2013 after police in Fairfax County learned that people who were victim of sex trafficking and getting into trouble were never asked the cause of why troubles were happening. Its founder, Bill Woolf, who is now works as the director of anti-human trafficking efforts at the Department of Justice, started off as the only detective in Fairfax County who was investigating trafficking. He came across one victim who had talked to plenty of school, sub-

➤ Trafficking, from Page 4 own making. It was in my head. It was my fault.' "Human trafficking just wasn't on the radar a few years ago," Langevoort said. She said Just Ask Prevention is "sort of the education piece in the fight against human trafficking." Langevoort told the story of a Fairfax County mother who had lived there for nearly 40 years when her teenage daughter became a victim of sex trafficking after meeting a 20-year-old MS-13 gang member after a night out with friends at the movies. The 20-year-old, who was also a sophomore at her high school, eventually gained her trust and friended her on Facebook — before things went down a dark and twisted road. She tried to end their “friendship,” but it just ended up in physical abuse during and after school. Eventually, MS-13 gang members would come to her window at night and threaten her at gunpoint. When the parents were away one time, gang members entered the house and threatened the girl’s 8- and 9-year-old brothers, saying that they would kill the parents and rape their 3-year-old daughter if she didn’t come with him. The teenage girl was taken to a house near Burke and gang-raped

Honoring the Mother of Beulah Baptist Church The life story of Harriet Tubman On Sunday, members and guests of Beulah Baptist Church of Rixeyville, celebrated Deaconess Sandra Lee Washington as the Matriarch of Beulah Baptist. A position of notoriety, the Mother of Beulah is also a ministry of serious responsibility as noted by the Reverend Dr. Kenneth Lee Pitts, pastor of Beulah Baptist Church.

Deaconess Washington was recognized for her special gifts and dedication to the ministry. Most importantly, Deaconess Washington live her life for Christ always walking in love and witnessing to everyone about the goodness of our Lord. The Beulah Baptist Church thanks her for accepting this obligation and challenge.

Sunday also afforded the members and guests of Beulah the opportunity to witness a stellar performance by Cleo Kay Coleman. Coleman is an 88-year-old historian. Beulah was the recipient of a historical account of the life of Mrs. Harriet Tubman. In Coleman's oration, she explained that Harriet was a slave who never learned to read or write and received visions

from God that guided her survival during the tough times of slavery. These visions along with the lessons she learned from her father, the Quakers and abolitionists helped her to free over 300 slaves. She fought against those who sought to continue slavery while taking slaves as far as Canada to ➤ See Tubman, Page 9

➤ Tubman, from Page 8 be free. Tubman's determination and strong will became an obsession to free as many slaves possible. Harriet always consulted God through prayer before making any trips in the underground railroad to free these slaves. The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved African Americans. She became a scout, a spy and led a section of the Union Army. Coleman recounts that Harriet always carried three things: her bible, a walking stick and a pistol. Affectionately, Mrs. Tubman was known as a "pistol packing woman" who believed that God didn't mean for any human to own another human being. As the program ended, Pastor Pitts mentioned it is good for us to read and research our history and don't always rely one source to teach us. We as African American people have made important strives and contributions to our society. What another great day to be at Beulah Baptist Church, “the little mega church” that sits on a hill on holy ground with a spectacular view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

EVHS student wins $15,000 scholarship from ACT A senior at Eastern View High School won the student lottery from a national college testing company. Amir Shariatmadari received a $15,000 scholarship and a $5,000 technology package from the ACT, an organization that provides college-placement testing to more than 1.8 million high school students each year. This year, the organization chose 14 students at random to receive a scholarship and technology package. Seven of those students, including Shariatmadari, were awarded the prize after taking the ACT. “When I found out I won the scholarship, I had trouble believing what had happened,” Shariatmadari said. “I wasn't even aware of the scholarship existing. [My counselor] called me over saying that the ACT people wanted to survey me [about] my experience taking the ACT. Instead, I found out that I won a scholarship.” According to the ACT, winners must use the scholarship funds at any Title IV-eligible postsecondary school in the United States. The technology package included a laptop computer, tablet, monitor, keyboard, mouse and other computer accessories. Winners also

received a gift card to help fund any other technology or software needs at college. Eastern View Principal, Dr. Felix Addo applauded the announcement. "Amir is a great student and deserving of this scholarship,” Addo said. “It couldn't have happened to a better student. We are on cloud nine and over the moon for Amir". Along with the scholarships, ACT officials are also awarding $65,000 this school year in flash giveaways to students preparing for the ACT test through ACT Academy, the organization’s free online learning and testing practice program. Shariatmadari, who has applied to several colleges and universities, plans to major in computer science. He is the son of Reza and Manijeh Shariatmadari of Culpeper. In January, ACT officials and EV staff were on hand to present Shariatmadari with the scholarship. “I just want to thank God, my family, and faculty and staff at Eastern View High School for all the blessings, opportunities, and support I have today,” Shariatmadari said. “I wouldn't be here without it.”

Laid out in a “60 Minutes” style, the show was comprised of short documentary films. A few months after production began in June 1968, co-host William Greaves was made executive producer. Everyone's family at Southside Coffee and Gifts By Jeff Say For the Culpeper Times Tanya Rixey Hale hopes people feel at home when they come into Southside Coffee and Gifts. The new coffee shop, located at 211 Southgate Shopping Center, welcomes visitors in like family — and for many they are. Hale laughs when she says, “we’re kin to just about everybody.” She calls herself “the last of the true Rixeys,” dating her lineage back to the early 1700s in Culpeper County. Her great great uncle is Eppa Rixey and the village of Rixeyville was built on her family’s land. Through the years, her family “threw more girls than boys” and that led to a lot of extended family. Those family members now frequent the new coffee shop, which specializes in customer service along with quality ingredients. “I do want people to come in here that they feel like they’re walking into my home,” she said. She gets the highest quality coffee possible, from a roaster in Atlanta who is on the Jamaican coffee board and he can get Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. She is able

The derivative from yellow peas is high in protein so it still foams up like whole milk. Love's Kitchen brings Bourbon Street to Culpeper By Pat Fitzgerald For the Culpeper Times Just off Davis Street in Culpeper is a taste of Bourbon Street. “I always wanted a different taste in Culpeper,” said Roger Hoffman Jr. of Love’s Kitchen at 106 W. Cameron St. “I think a Southern New Orleans-style restaurant was something that would catch Culpeper by surprise,” he said. “We have our Ruby Tuesday, we have our chains and all those things, but there’s nothing really Southern that’s here. I’ve been wanting that ever since I was in high school. A 2004 graduate of Culpeper County High School, Hoffman was a high school basketball player and has had his own successful barbershop — the aptly named Successful Hands — for a little more than four years in Culpeper. Hoffman sees Love’s Kitchen as just another way of giving back to his mother, his community and God. “My mother, Virginia Hoffman, she’s a part of the business and she always wanted her own restaurant ➤ See Love's, Treasures 6

Love’s Kitchen, which incorporates the New Orleans theme, serves up everything from fish and oyster po’ boys, shrimp linguini and blackened chicken penne to shrimp and grits. For those who want something not so Southern, there’s also Philadelphia-inspired cheesesteak sandwiches. “I think a Southern New Orleansstyle restaurant was something that would catch Culpeper by surprise,” says owner Roger Hoffman Jr. (left). With him is chef Kenny Henderson.

➤ Love's, from Treasures 5 one day,” Roger Hoffman said. “I believe it started from a vision from God — My Lord and my Savior — that’s how it started.” It’s also about “my Mom and helping her achieve her goals she wanted,” he said. “I think that the times have changed from her era and now I can give back to her for raising me and just being a good mother to me and just to help her, because she’s involved with this as well.” Love’s Kitchen, which incorporates the New Orleans theme including a saxophone and posters from the Big Easy on the walls, as well as festival Mardi Gras decorations on the tables, serves up everything from fish and oyster po’ boys, shrimp linguini and blackened chicken penne to shrimp and grits. For those who want something not so Southern, there’s also Philadelphia-inspired cheesesteak sandwiches. “I believe one of our top sellers is the cheesesteak,” Hoffman noted. In addition, there’s everything to drink from Southern sweet tea to a full bar, and daily drink specials are available. “There are some other things that have not been on board yet, so there’s more to come from her,” ➤ See Love's, Treasures 7

FILM • “Old Yeller” (Disney/ Buena Vista, 1957) Stories of boys and their dogs have long been fodder for films and books, but none has ever resonated more strongly with the public than this 1957 adaptation of the Fred Gipson novel. Produced by Disney, which knew how to touch the hearts of moviegoers with both laughter and tears, the beloved film was directed by Robert Stevenson and stars Fess Parker, Dorothy McGuire, Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran. Purchased for three dollars from a Van Nuys animal shelter, the real star of “Old Yeller” was a yellow Black Mouth Cur that trainer Frank Weatherwax named Spike. Spike went on to appear in 20th-Century-Fox's 1960 remake of “A Dog of Flanders,” as well as on the short-lived NBC series “The Westerner” starring Brian Keith, and sired two more generations of animal actors. Few movie endings have ever proved as emotionally affecting as the conclusion of “Old Yeller.” The film was included on the National Film Registry in 2019. 35mm archival print, 83 min. as a New Jersey convenience store clerk while his alter-ego video store friend Randal (Jeff Anderson) works when the mood strikes him. At 23 years old, director Kevin Smith (who also plays Silent Bob) made his debut film for $27,000, reportedly financed by selling his comic book collection and using proceeds from when his car was lost in a flood. This sleeper hit helped define an era, grossed over $3 million, achieved prominent cult status among Generations X to Z, and easily garnered the most public votes in this year’s National Film Registry balloting. Critic Roger Ebert described “Clerks” as “utterly authentic” with “the attitude of a gas station attendant who tells you to check your own oil. It's grungy and unkempt, and Dante and Randal look like they have been nourished from birth on beef jerky and Cheetos. They are tired and bored, underpaid and unlucky in love, and their encounters with customers feel like a series of psychological tests.” 35mm archival film print, 92 min. *No one under the age of 17 will be admitted without a parent or guardian. FEB. 27 FILM • “The Phenix City Story” (Allied Artists Pictures, 1955) Film noir comes to Alabama in this ripped-from-the-headlines tale in a film based on notorious real-life 1954 events. Albert Patterson (John McIntire) is an attorney trying to clean up his mob-controlled town — Phenix City, aka “Sin City, U.S.A.” — and is killed while running for state attorney general. Also featuring Richard Kiley and Kathryn Grant, the film has been lauded for being both stylish and for its semi-documentary style. Noted B-movie director Phil Karlson crafted this low-budget, violent shocker ➤ See Happenings, Page 14

VIEWS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Virginia legislators are stealing my vote With all of the angst of the Democrats in Richmond attempting to suppress our second amendment rights, the House of Delegates is attempting to steal our votes for president. House Bill 177 is designed to force Virginians to have their Electoral College votes go to whoever wins the national popular vote. Not the Virginia popular vote — the national popular vote. So if the majority of Virginians vote for a candidate for president, the law would force our Electoral College votes potentially go to another candidate altogether. So the states like New York and California, could actually determine Virginia’s Electoral College votes. Allow me to be clear, this is all about Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote and not winning the Electoral College. In other words, it is about sore losers attempting to corrupt the system. It is a fit of childish bitterness aimed at erasing the Electoral College that our Founding Fathers established. They did not desire the popular vote to determine the presidential winner because it gave too much power at the time to Boston, Philadelphia, and New York. Our current suite of leftist legislators believe they are somehow smarter than our Founding Fathers. I assure you, they are not. What this does is steal my vote. To say I am pissed off about this would be an understatement. The voting right of each person is what the Democrats in Richmond are stomping on. Consider this, 100% of Virginians could vote for Candidate A, but 100% of our Electoral College votes could go to Candidate B if he/she wins the national popular vote. This means that my constitutional endowed vote could be stolen and given to someone I did not vote for. My ability to represent myself is being taken from me and from you as well. Plain and simple, the Virginia Democratic Party in our state attempting to hijack our votes and spit on our rights. We should have come to expect this behavior from a party that is burning up the second amendment, who has a lying governor and a sexual predator for a lieutenant governor. Like Obamacare, this is being forced down our throats by one party totally in charge of the state government. And like Obamacare,

it is fundamentally wrong. Virginia Democrats are attempting to ensure, at a state level, that Donald Trump will not win the 2020 election. They are so feebly desperate, they are willing to take away the power of our votes to do so. It is wrong…no…it is evil. The framers of our great nation felt that a national popular vote was not the way to elect a president. The Electoral College was designed to ensure that individual voices and votes were carried forward in a fair and just way. If you want California and New York to determine the Presidency, then you are advocating the stealing of my vote. If you support this lunacy, you believe you are more intelligent than the people that built this great nation. If you support House Bill 177, you are attempting to illegally negate my vote. I will not stand by idly while this happens, nor should you. This should be taken to court. More importantly, we need to replace these idiotic ideologue Democrats in office in our great state so that laws like this do not pass. Blaine Pardoe Amissville

Yowell Meadow Park needs Charter of Freedom monument What we know as Yowell Meadow Park once served for military musters and encampments in two wars by three armies. If there was enough space for such intense activity then, there is certainly more than enough room now for the Charters of Freedom monument. The setting is not only adequate, but wonderfully appropriate. The park is a favorite of my grandchildren. When they visit, I want them to see this monument honoring the founding documents right beside the monument honoring those who fought to make the founding possible. I urge the Town Parks and Recreation Commission to return to their original approval of these two monuments in Yowell Meadow Park. Nancy J. Rice Culpeper

Team Jordan thanks those who contributed at Dec. 4 fundraiser On behalf of all of the members of Team Jordan, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to our recent fundraiser held on December 4, 2019. Team Jordan, in collaboration with Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services, is a suicide prevention coalition committed to providing resources to those most at risk and also to surviving loved ones after a tragic event has occurred. Because of the generosity of many local businesses and individuals, this latest fundraising effort was hugely successful. The proceeds raised will be used to further our outreach efforts and educate our community about reducing the risk of suicide. There are countless people to thank for their various contributions. Whether you helped sell raffle tickets for Team Jordan or purchased them, donated your valuable time in some way, made a monetary gift, attended our event or made any of the other forms of donations we received, I sincerely thank you. Your generous contributions mean Team Jordan and RRCS can reach more people and educate them on how to better recognize someone at risk, learn where to get help, and to offer the vital support to surviving loved ones and friends. The community support and attendance of this year’s fundraiser was bigger than ever, which means there is an ever-increasing number of people in the community who are committed to suicide prevention. There is nothing greater that one can do than to contribute to a community’s well-being, and your very generous help will certainly be felt by those who need it, when they need it most. And if you were not able to join us on December 4th, there’s always next year’s event -or you can contribute anytime by sending your donation to Team Jordan, PO Box 773, Culpeper, VA 22701. With sincere gratitude and appreciation, Chris R. Jenkins Chairperson Team Jordan

DAM SAFETY AND FLOODPLAIN MANAGEMENT www.dcr.virginia.gov/floodawareness

Steeplechasing enthusiasts and fans of Downton Abbey are invited to make plans to enjoy the exciting spectacle of beautiful horses racing over fences on Saturday, March 7, when Rappahannock Hunt Races, which last ran in 2008, kick off the 2020 Virginia Point-to-point Association season at The Hill Farm on Route 522 North, just outside Culpeper. Jump racing on natural terrain is great fun to watch and you can't help getting excited, cheering for "your" horse to win, but first you have to get to the course. Your outing becomes a special adventure when you find yourself driving along a farm lane that leads you into a glorious expanse of open countryside with mind-boggling views of the horizon where the Blue Ridge Mountains meet the sky. It’s so easy to organize a party of family, friends, and business associates. You can choose general admission (GA) at $7 per head or the discounted book of 10 GA tickets for $50, both options with free parking and a short walk to the course. Food trucks and vendors will be on site if you don’t feel like toting picnic baskets and coolers. Reserved parking with premium and direct views of the course provide another terrific way to enjoy your day at the races. Patron Parking ($125) and Railside Parking ($125) put your party of four in a pre-assigned parking place. Have a huge guest list? No worries purchasing additional GA tickets ($7 per person) or that discounte book of 10. will get all your besties to the party. Another option is Side-by-Side Parking: $225 reserves two adjacent parking spaces an four occupants per vehicle and GA tickets for additional guests. There’s also an option for tent parking ($175) with parking for one vehicle with four occupants, but you have to provide your own tent, maximum 10x10. Note: no dogs allowed, for safety reasons. Steeplechase Tailgate Party 101 What To Wear: it helps to be prepared for extremes in weather, so get updated forecasts, and remember that layering is the best bet. Country casual covers a

wide variety of fashion, and rural styles bring sophisticated practicality to your sartorial splendor. Plan on waterproof and warm outer layers and several light layers that are easy to remove. Pack along extra socks and wear waterproof boots that protect you from puddles, mud, snow. Don’t forget gloves, scarves, neck-warmers. Hats are more than a fashion statement: wearing one prevents the loss of 50 percent of your body heat. Even if you’re not a shopaholic, be sure to stop by Rappahannock Hunt’s tent and check out the sporting selection of apparel with distinctive running fox logo. Food and Drink Your tailgate picnic, fancy or casual, is up to you. If you’re attending general admission and you don’t feel like carrying picnic basket or cooler, food trucks and vendors will be on site. If you reserve a tailgate parking space, it’s easy to put on the ritz or keep it simple. If you’re a guest at someone’s tailgate, it’s nice to offer to bring something, but some enthusiasts are serious DIYers – just go and have a good time. Hosting? Keep a list of who and what: bouillon, coffee, wings, ribs, fried chicken, various salads, deviled eggs, ham biscuits, brownies — everyone has a favorite dish to share. If you bring adult beverages, please remember to designate a driver s that your fun day at the races doesn’t end with flashing lights. The Venue: The Hill, situated on Durantes Curve (Rt. 522) in Boston, VA, is extremely well named, offering sensational views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Driving through The Hill to the new course is like going back in time: all you can see is natural countryside and distan mountains that span the horizon like slumbering dragons. Post time is 1 p.m. for the program of timber and flat races. Gates open at 10:30 a.m. You don’t have to know horses to enjoy an exciting day of racing over fences amidst breathtaking views and spacious skies ... like scenes from Downton Abbey, but live.

‘Mother Road’ — Long Ride on Scenic Route A man who’s been shot in the abdomen with a shotgun isn’t going to last an hour without medical help, much less a night and day sitting up in a pickup truck. Serious suspension of disbelief aside, by the time we get to this part of “Mother Road”, it’s just a matter of what will kill William Joad, not if. It’s certain he has to die, because that’s the only way Martin Jodes can inherit the Oklahoma farm. Octavio Solis’s two and a half hour play owes its inspiration to Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath” in much the same way that “Clybourne Park” spun off of “A Raisin in the Sun”. It’s a case of “let’s pretend sixty years have passed and this is what happened.” In Steinbeck’s classic Depression-era novel, the Joad family faced a long series of setbacks and losses as they escaped the dustbowl of Oklahoma along Rt. 66, the east-west highway that Steinbeck termed the “mother road.” Their goal was California, land of opportunity and promise – or at least jobs. But their arrival merely exchanged one set of hardships for another. Always there was the taint of being “Okies”, that white, dirt poor farm class often treated no better than a swarm of locusts. “Mother Road” begins with an aging William Joad, grandson of Tom Joad, searching for the only other direct descendant of the family so that he can turn over the deed to the Oklahoma farm and die in peace. The fulcrum of the entire play begins with his discovery that the relative he seeks is a young Mexican-American man named Martin Jodes. For the next two hours, this journey will be punctuated with memories, vignettes, and disputes mostly centered on who has the greater claim to victimhood – from nature, society, life itself. Directed by Bill Rauch, “Mother Road” is a presentation of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and features most of the same fine actors and design team. Mark Murphy as the wiry, dust-bit William Joad radiates the defiant anger of a man who has had enough of life’s foolishness. His immediate conflict is between keeping the farm in the family and accepting that “the family” is now Mexican. Tony Sancho in a fine portrayal of Martin Jodes negotiates the thin line between wanting to accept this unexpected piece of good fortune and rejecting the gut level prejudice with which he is met. Their shared stories of hardship and loss – and a bizarre side trip

– solidify the bond which eventually unites them. Martin’s cousin, Mo, (Amy Lizardo) joins the trip and adds a strong primary color of street “cred” and humor. Nothing seems to shift her very far from her base of self confidence and her understanding that life is a wily opponent, and she has to be ready. Kate Mulligan plays three roles, but as Ivy the waitress, and William’s mother in flashback, she is stunningly clear. The underfed body in a loose, faded dress, the wisp of hair and the small flash of flinty stoicism is the very portrait of prairie women who were forced to become migrants. Scenes in past and present interrupt the narrative with a graphic explanation of the history that drives them. A dust storm comes, and father Tom (Ted Deasy) has ropes attached to the house so that he won’t be lost. A motel run by Hispanics who “hate gringos and Okies” won’t allow them to stay because of the Joad name. That lead foot on the accelerator of “social justice” keeps driving the play, but younger generations heal from their parents’ memories even as William remarks, “Old ghosts turn up.” “Mother Road” relies heavily on a chorus of players who appear as incidental ranch hands, cooks, and State Troopers, as well as road markers, cassette players, juke boxes, and vending machines. This last, where actors stand in for inanimate objects, is so playful as to be comic. I have no objection to a startled laugh, but it contributes to a sense that the play is searching for a tone, and in an effort to cover all bases, is in danger of losing direction. Another sweeping tone change comes in the frequent choral recitations. A good half hour could have been lopped off by eliminating this overused college drama class device. Actors shouting “Mile marker! Mile marker!” aren’t necessary for making us understand that the Joads are traveling on a highway. Especially when the two large screens suspended above the arena stage show highway going by. Christopher Acebo’s set design must accommodate the special problems of theatre in the square, and for the most part succeeds. A diagonal highway cuts through the center of a dirt colored floor with two boulders, and barely noticeable hill-shaped cutouts line the four sides. Those projection screens do what they can to support the time and place, but swiftly placed and removed area staging – pickup truck bed, diner seats, motel beds – are the ➤ See Curtain Call, Page 23

In this pairing I see an arduous and unfamiliar Cara Cutro path leading to a deeply transformative experience. The 5 of Pentacles, at face value, represents a challenging time brought on by loss. If we take a deeper look at the meaning we may see an experience of abandonment or being left out and forgotten. This is often brought on by the chaos and dismantling that occurs with change. The saying, “It’s hell in the hallway,” comes to mind. Whatever challenge we are facing, whether it’s a difficult change occurring around us or strictly an internal sense of being thrown out of the nest, this change is a necessary one we must face. Keep moving forward and no matter how bleak it seems, help is available to aid us in this process. The 5 of Pentacles requires us to suspend the belief that we have been somehow abandoned by life and to recognize the help that is available to us. This help is often found in our relationship with a Higher Power or a supportive

community. Death is the inevitable change that awaits each of us. In Tarot we almost always view this as a metaphor, as we experience the process of acceptance and letting go many times within a lifetime, these are mini-deaths if you will. Grief and loss are a part of living. The beauty is that out of endings new beginnings emerge with the integrated materials from the lessons, people, and experiences of our past. If we can see the truth of how everything connects into a fabric that never truly ceases to exist, we transcend into a whole new life and depth of understanding. The Death card is an invitation to emerge from the chrysalis once more. Now is a time to lean into family, community, and spiritual connection. Cara Cutro is a spirit centered teacher and life coach residing in Sperryville, VA.
