In terms of raw numbers, Loudoun also was at the top of the list, adding 12,125 residents in the new estimate. It was followed by Prince William County (6,715), Richmond (3,379), Fairfax County (3,189) and Chesterfield County (3,094).

Despite public proclamations of joy in getting back the authority to enact a tax surcharge on hotel stays to fund tourism promotion, it’s clear the Arlington County government sees it as a case of settling for half a loaf. And they may make a play for the whole loaf in 2018. The General Assembly this year agreed to restore Arlington’s ability to levy a 0.25-percent surcharge on hotel stays for tourism promotion, bringing it back five years later after Jay Fisette it was stripped away by legislators in a burst of retributive fury at the Arlington County Board. With Gov. McAuliffe having signed the legislation, the tax revenue will again start flowing into county-government coffers starting July 1, and is expected to bring in about $1 million a year. During the legislative session, Arlington leaders made a play to get the tax restored in perpetuity, rather than have the measure include a “sunset clause” requiring the locality

Arlington Population Growth Continuing Census Bureau Estimates a 1.1% Year-Over-Year Boost to 229,164 Arlington’s population grew 1.1 percent from mid-2014 to mid-2015 and was up 10.4 percent from the 2010 federal census, according to estimates reported March 24 by the U.S. Census Bureau. The official estimate for Arlington’s population on July 1, 2015, stood at 229,164, up from 226,624 a year before and from 207,627 in the 2010 census.

Arlington’s year-over-year growth rate was about one-third that of Loudoun County, which at 3.3 percent had the biggest population boost between July 2014 and July 2015. It was followed by Falls Church (3 percent), Greensville County (3 percent), Charlottesville (2.1 percent) and New Kent County (2 percent).
