Read all about it: The winners and more

This “extra edition” of the InsideNoVa/Prince William weekly newspaper was produced for members of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the chamber’s 2024 Business Awards banquet on Feb. 23. In addition to being distributed at the end of that event, this section is being mailed to nearly 1,400 members of the chamber and is being inserted into the Feb. 29 edition of our newspaper.

Over 100 nominations of local businesses and organizations were submitted this year - nearly half of those in the top two categories for business excellence. And many businesses were nominated in more than one category.

Some of these businesses are less than a year old, while others have been around for more than 100 years. Whether they are young or old, they reflect the diversity and vibrancy of the local business community here in Prince William County.

The pages that follow include many details about the businesses and organizations nominated for this year’s awards, along with some of the challenges they have had to overcome. Reading them can do nothing but strengthen one’s belief that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in our community – and lead one to

Charles J. Colgan Visionary award

Dr. Carol Shapiro receives Colgan Award

WINNER

Dr. Carol Shapiro, who has been dedicated to the health care needs of the people in Prince William County for more than 50 years, received the Charles J. Colgan Visionary Award from the Prince William Chamber of Commerce on Feb. 23.

The award, named in memory of the longtime state senator from the region who passed away in January 2017, recognizes individuals for their service to the business community. It was presented during the chamber’s annual awards dinner at Foxchase Manor.

She has served in numerous medical staff leadership roles, including as the first woman president of the medical staff of the former Potomac Hospital and Prince William Hospital. She continues to serve as chair of the Medical Affairs Committee at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center.

Dr. Shapiro is a graduate of Woman’s Medical College in Philadelphia in 1965 (now Drexel University Medical School) and earned a master’s of business administration degree from George Mason University.

Upon completion of her training in General and Plastic Surgery at Georgetown University, Dr. Shapiro established her private practice in plastic surgery with offices in Woodbridge and Manassas. After decades in private practice, she became medical director of the Wound Healing Clinic at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center.

Dr. Shapiro was integral in establishing the gang tattoo removal clinic in Prince William, generously donating her time and expertise. Her commitment to her profession has included leadership roles with the Prince William Medical Society, the Medical Society of Virginia – where she served as the first woman president – and the American Medical Association, serving as chair of the Virginia delegation from 2007 to 2016. Christy Grabus, chief nurse executive of Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, said Dr. Sharpiro has had an “indelible mark in the more than 50 years of professional and volunteer contributions to our hospital, our community and the medical profession coupled with her irrefutable character, affability and dedication.”
