Combined Neighborhood Watch gathering to focus on mental health after COVID Jim Graffe, executive director of the RappahannockRapidan Community Services Board, will discuss mental health and services that are available to the community.
BY PAT FITZGERALD FOR THE CULPEPER TIMES
After a year-and-a-half of not meeting, the Culpeper Police Department’s Combined Neighborhood Watch will gather in person Thursday, July 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the Culpeper Baptist Church. “Our last in-person meeting was February 2020, and then in that March or April they had one virtual meeting, but then after that it kind of stopped because we didn’t have the community people watching it, we had everyone else watching it and making comments and it just took away from that [community] feel,” Culpeper Police Lt. Ashley Banks said. After a presentation of the Amazing Citizen Award for the past few months at 6:30 p.m., the featured speaker will be Jim Graffe, executive director of the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Board, will discuss mental health and services that are available to the community. He’ll address the group for about 45 minutes, and then take questions for about 15 more minutes. (The meeting will also be livestreamed on the Culpeper PD’s Facebook page.) Lt. Banks said the topic of mental illness was specifically chosen after a year-and-a-half of lockdowns and social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s a hot topic right now, locally and nationally, especially with a lot of people who were not able to get services that they needed with the pandemic,” he said. “Coming out of the pandemic, we’re just trying to let people know what services are available.”
PAT FITZGERALD/FOR THE CULPEPER TIMES
Culpeper Police Sgt. Anthony Caruso and Lt. Ashley Banks promote National Night Out, an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. “In Culpeper, we have a total of 25 different neighborhood watch groups, each of which has their own liaison officer from the Police Department,” said Sgt. Anthony Caruso. “Some are more active than others, but they get together or have meetings every month — or least they used to prior to COVID. We’re trying to get them back into that now.” The “combined” part of the Combined Neighborhood Watch Meeting means it’s open to both Neighborhood Watch members and the general public. Usually, an
investigator will give updates on crime trends and cases, as well as traffic safety campaigns or other events going. “It’s not quite a town-hall meeting, but just to give [out] information,” Lt. Banks said. “For this one, however, we’re just having Mr. LaGraffe for 45 minutes. The whole meeting is dedicated to him.” In addition to the relaunching of the Combined Neighborhood Watch Meetings, the Culpeper Police Department is also promoting upcoming events such as Pack a Patrol Car for back-to-
school and the Tuesday, Aug. 3, National Night Out program. National Night Out, an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie, had to be postponed until October last year — or not held at all — across the nation. “Last year it was scheduled for August, however, they put an asterisk next to it and said if you community didn’t feel safe to do it, you can do it in October. I think some communities are still doing that,” Lt. Banks said. “The larger ones still had something, but it was scaled back, especially with the number of people you could have at an event.” Sgt. Caruso said some neighborhoods do something as small as an ice cream social, while other groups will just get together and have a barbecue at somebody’s house. “Some of our bigger groups … have a bunch of different vendors, sometimes games and food,” he said, noting that AirCare 6 Medivac is scheduled to showcase its helicopter in the Belle Court and Spring Meadow Lane neighborhoods. “That’s one of our biggest events in town every year,” he said.

Partnership builds up Jimini BY PAT FITZGERALD FOR THE CULPEPER TIMES
The last 18 months brought nothing but hardship for most small businesses. But for Jimini in downtown Culpeper, it led to a chance encounter that has resulted in renewal. John Beck, who recently moved from Tallahassee, Florida, to Culpeper to be closer to his granddaughter in Alexandria, had visited the store when he saw a golden opportunity. “I fell in love with this store,” said Beck, a woodturner who makes wooden bowls. Owner Jim Schorr, who creates one-of-a-kind, custom furniture, used his Jimini store to sell his products, but it was mostly an artisan showroom for others. “He would have outside artists,” Beck said. “We do support our local artisans. They do bring their goods in here; we take a commission and we sell it.” However, Beck saw that Jimini could be so much more. That’s when he pitched the idea to Schorr to let him work for free for a couple of months, giving Schorr more time to develop his wares. “I don’t mind changes. I grow every time I make a change in my life,” Beck said. “I said, ‘Jim, what do you need?’ He said, ‘I wish I had more
time to develop and create the furniture I do best — live-edge furniture.’ “I saw a diamond in the rough,” Beck said. “I’m getting something out of this. I’m getting a commission out of this; I’m not an all-saint guy. I just love it. It’s a beautiful story on how it all came together. Beck made a win-win offer. “I just moved to Culpeper, I’m retired, I’m new here and I don’t know anybody and that’s what I have, nothing but time,” he told Schorr. This all happened while other people with time — as well as pentup frustration and money — decided that they were ready to spruce up their surroundings, whether at home or the office. “The pent-up people are out and they’re spending money, and the No. 1 home renovation is the office,” Beck said. “We have a lot of people come in and say, ‘I need a desk. My boss said go out and buy a desk.’ They’re tired of the kitchen Zooming and homes are being built up with offices. Schorr has a couple of artisans that help him build “living-edge furniture,” where one side cannot be touched by mankind. “[They] can take the bark off, and that’s it,” Beck said. That’s what Beck, a retired marketing director for SC Johnson, said

The Culpeper Chamber of Commerce holds a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, July 16, at Jimini, 154 E. Davis St. Jimini needed to be showcasing. “We brought in a few pieces of furniture and we more than tripled our sales within two or three months.” The wood used to create Schorr’s pieces comes from local sawmills. “This is expensive furniture, but the process that it goes through [can be years],” Beck said, adding: “You have to understand that the quality of the wood and the simplicity of the wood speaks for itself.” “We try to do live-edge furniture and we’ve added this section into the store and hope to bring more products into the store. Anything that anyone needs to be made or have something special done, we will do it for you,” Schorr said.
At a Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting July 16 at the store, Beck said Jimini is a celebration of friendship and community. “This ribbon-cutting is not for Jimini. This is to introduce our furniture, but it’s really for downtown Culpeper. Let’s celebrate COVID hopefully coming to an end,” Beck said. “I’ve got people across the street asking if there’s anything we can do for you. That’s the community we live in, which I love and adore. This is a ribbon-cutting for all of us.” As for the correct pronunciation of the store, Beck shared this story. “[Schorr’s wife, Alice] used to say, ‘Jim and I started the store,’ ‘Jim and I opened the store,’ and that is how Jimini got its name.”

Chamber celebrates First Responders ➤ Valor Awards honor many who helped at horrific accident BY PAT FITZGERALD FOR THE CULPEPER TIMES
The Culpeper Chamber of Commerce honored local first responders Aug. 14 on a night that ironically saw heavy rain and winds that resulted in downed trees and the ceremony running on generator power at the Salem Volunteer Fire Department. “We went through COVID and learned how to roll with the punches,” Culpeper Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jeff Say said to the large crowd that filled the Salem VFD in western Culpeper County. “We know how important [first responders] to have them in our lives and we are so blessed to have them here in Culpeper. “We’ve heard stories over the past year of first responders going above and beyond in everything they do. Whether it is a family that is shut in their house when they are ill, and buying them food from Chick-Fil-A on their own dollar or coming to aid for those who are stuck in flooded homes following the heavy rains that we’ve had. Whether it’s helping out the homeless; there are so many first responders taking those in who have nowhere to go and helping them out when they have nowhere to go and giving them a helping hand. “To me, that is what Culpeper is all about,” he said. “It’s neighbors helping neighbors.” Chad Melton, CEO of Fauquier Health, gave the keynote address, thanking family members for supporting first responders who put their lives on the line — some without pay. “I really believe that without the family support that we would not

They take the time to volunteer and give back to the community. “When you look at the dictionary, valor is defined as great courage in the face of danger, especially in battle. Leaders like me in Christ look at the Bible as our guide as well,” he said. “… This is a calling. This is a profession. Just like us who work in the hospital, we all have a reason why we are doing the job that we do. It’s because we love it, we love the people who we work with and we love our community.” “They deserve all the recognition and the acollades that they received here tonight,” Say said. “I can nothing more than ‘thank you.’” • Richardsville Volunteer Fire

Visitors of all ages are welcome to enjoy a variety of activities that will bring to life the experiences of soldiers and civilians impacted by the battle. The Battle of Cedar Mountain took place in Culpeper County on Aug. 9, 1862. Confederate troops led by Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson prevailed over Federal troops led by Gen. Nathaniel Banks at a cost of 3,800 men killed or wounded. “Education is an important part of our mission and we are excited to offer a variety of learning opportunities and expanded kids’ activities this year,” FCMB President Diane Logan said. “We are grateful to the American Battlefield Trust and our volunteers who help make this happen.” Programs and activities open
to the public will take place from 9 a.m.- 5p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8. EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

Myers is the author of American Citizen, which documents the Civil War experience of George Brooks, a captain in the 46th PA during the Battle of Cedar Mountain. (Myers has a family connection to the 46th PA: his great-greatgreat-grandfather served in Company D under Captain Brooks). • At the Cedar Mountain sig-
nal station, visitors will see a demonstration of signal flags and learn how messages were coded, sent and decoded. • On Sunday, Aug. 8, a Memorial Ceremony at 9:30 a.m. recognizes the fallen at Cedar Mountain whose names have been submitted to the FCMB Ancestors Roll by their descendants. A schedule for the event is available at https://friendsofcedarmountain.org/annual-event/ Logan added, “We welcome volunteers to help FCMB continue building on current projects and to develop new programs,” Logan said. “There are opportunities to fit varied interests from gardening to house maintenance, battlefield tour guiding, supporting kids’ programs, and helping organize a library and research center.” Friends of Cedar Mountain Battlefield is a community-based nonprofit corporation dedicated to working cooperatively with landowners and local citizens to protect, restore, maintain, manage, interpret, and promote public awareness of the Cedar Mountain Civil War Battlefield and vicinity in Culpeper County.

Parks & Rec celebrates martial arts success BY PAT FITZGERALD FOR THE CULPEPER TIMES
On a recent hot Friday at Lenn Park in Culpeper County, 16-year-old Riley Wilton received his purple belt from martial arts instructor Remi Godlewski. And while the focus was on Wilton, who respectfully received his belt and then demonstrated some of his moves while sparring with his instructor of the past eight years, the accomplishment was more a celebration of the success of the Culpeper Parks and Recreation program. Wilton is just one of three active purple belts — an advanced/-intermediate designation in the local program, along with 17-year-old Leigh Taylor and 14-year-old Emery Taylor. “When I started out, I really didn’t know how long I’d be doing it, but I’ve continued to do it,” said Riley, a home-schooled student. (The next stage is brown, followed by the prestigious black belt.) “It’s a big accomplishment,” said Riley’s Mom, Kelly. “It’s great. This is a wonderful program. We kind of fell into it. He was into martial arts but we couldn’t afford anything at the time. This is just a wonderful, affordable opportunity for families. It’s really well run. Godlewski is “just fabulous, especially with the younger crowd,” Kelly Wilton said. “He’s got great poise and patients, and he did with Riley as well.” “[Riley] was actually a little boy, like some of these other campers starting out like that,” Godlewski said, noting that his student has been part of the program for half his life. And while it usually takes about four to five years to go from beginner to receiving a purple belt, Riley’s journey has taken longer due to the part-time nature of the Parks & Rec program — as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our program has reached a level of excellence because we all our classes full for several years,” Godlewski said. “The limit was 10 per class, and we filled up at 10. Unfortunately, when COVID came, we were shut down. Finally, we were able to do six in a small camp with restrictions. “We did one small camp. Now we continue to do (more). We did some small classes this year, but also limited it to six people with re-

The children are happy to assemble, socialize and play together. Godlewski said the accomplish of his students are reflective of him as an instructor as well. “I’m tremendously proud, because the instructor — the sensei, the teacher — is not judged by what he can do, but what his students can do,” he said. “My students show what we’ve been able to accomplish together. And that includes the support of the parents and their commitment, and the self-control and the discipline and so on. “Along the way, I tell them, ‘you should be proud.’ I am proud for him, very much proud, because of the top students, he is one of them,” he said. “Most people don’t even get a yellow belt, which is first.” Martial arts classes through Culpeper County Parks and Recreation will run August-December, and March-May. The next session starts in late-August, and registration opens Aug. 13. For more information, call the department at (540) 727-3412 or visit web.culpepercounty.gov/Government/ DepartmentsP-V/ParksandRecreation. “The skill level is comparable to the best karate schools, in my humble opinion,” Godlewski said.

CCHS students receive Bowers for Suicide Awareness Scholarships Two local Culpeper high school students recently received educational support from the Rusty Bowers Memorial Scholarship. Lara Parker received $1,000 and Olivia Searle accepted $500 through the effort sponsored by the family of Rusty Bowers, lost to suicide on Oct. 17, 2009. Both students will be attending James Madison University, according to Bowers’ mother, Brenda. She joined suicide prevention specialist Alan Rasmussen and her husband, Junior, recently for the scholarship presentations. The Bowers family started the Scholarship in memory of their son and brother “Rusty” John Russell Bowers III in 2012 after losing him. The nonprofit aims to raise awareness about and bring attention to depression and suicide. “Rusty was a kind-hearted, gentle soul who always put others before himself. He is so loved and we miss him every day,” Brenda Bowers wrote. Rusty’s Scholarship relies on several annual fundraisers including the Life Savers Walk, Community Fun Day and The Bowers
Bowl. COVID-19 curtailed these fundraisers last year, but the work continues nonetheless, needed now more than ever, the group said. “The most important thing to our family is to focus on depression and awareness,” Brenda Bowers said. “We’re praying that if anything has come from the loss of our precious son is that what we’re doing in his memory is that people realize that they are not alone. It’s OK to talk about it. “Depression is a serious illness; it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s a chemical imbalance in the brain and can be deadly if not treated. It’s OK to reach out for help.” She said she hopes her family could walk beside the community, be there for one another and save just one life so that no one else would have to endure what they did in losing Rusty. “That’s what Rusty’s Coalition is all about — ‘Saving Lives Together,’” Brenda Bowers said. To support Rusty’s Coalition’s with a tax-deductible donation, send a check payable to: Rusty Bowers Fund/RRCS; RRCS PO Box 568 Culpeper, VA 22701 (Tax ID #23-7238218).

Local Realtors give back to community As the Culpeper area transitions from the COVID-19 challenges, the Greater Piedmont Realtors Cares Committee recognizes there are many community organizations that still need help. Greater Piedmont Realtors, a nonprofit trade association covering four rural counties in Virginia, has a “Cares Committee” that plans and organizes fundraisers and donations for a variety of needs in the community. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit last year, they chose to help those vulnerable – the elderly. When the Greater Piedmont Realtors Care Committee contacted the nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the area, the response was immediate and enthusiastic. Due to the pandemic, the people living in such facilities could not have family come visit or even visit much with others in the same facility. These seniors were isolated. The Greater Piedmont Realtors Care Committee ascertained what was needed and immediately began collecting donations of funds and

Over the next several weeks, the Realtors provided carloads of puzzle books, crayons, playing cards, food and snacks, toiletries, Bingo prizes, note pads and more to 11 local nursing homes and
assisted living facilities. The thank you notes, letters, and smiles from the residents were overwhelming. Again this year, the Greater Piedmont Realtors Care Committee delivered the food and goods right before the July Fourth
holiday and included a patriotic flag and individual baggies filled with gifts such as lotion, hand sanitizer, tissues, note pads and pens, chap stick, nail files and other “goodies” to eight local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. This year was extra special because the Committee had some limited opportunities to interact with the residents and personally deliver the gifts. Their appreciation, smiles, thank-you calls and notes made it all worthwhile. “When called to help, I am always amazed and overjoyed by the participation of my fellow Realtor community,” said Becky Miller, president of the Greater Piedmont Realtors. “It is with deep gratitude and appreciation that I thank our members for their donations of time, money, and supplies. “As your business or organization looks for ways to help or give back to the community, keeping those less fortunate or vulnerable in mind makes a difference for you and them,” she said.

“Within the Greater Piedmont region, year-to-date sales were up 19% compared to the same time period last year and prices across the four-county region are up almost 15%. The median sales price is now higher than the median list price, meaning most properties are selling for over asking price. Until more inventory hits the market, we will continue to see a very competitive market. If you are thinking about selling, contact your local Realtor to help navigate through this complicated process.” Becky Miller Greater Piedmont Realtors president Greater Piedmont Realtors is a trade association representing approximately 700 Realtors in Culpeper, Fauquier Rappahannock, and Madison counties.

Pinball machines remedy post-vacation blues It was my annual saddest day of the year — the longest time before any return to the Outer Banks. The end of a family vacation is always strangely emotional for me especially when I am crossing the Oregon Inlet Bridge. All the songs seem sadder on the playlist as the last few glimpses of the ocean are relegated to the rearview mirror. Marshall Conner It gets sad … country song sad, Morrissey sad or maybe even end of A River Runs Through It-level sad. The sadness lingers in the car like the smell of a half-closed packet of shrimp scented Gulps and Sonic burgers past. Then somewhere near Grandy, North Carolina, I had an idea to turn the post-vacation blues around. Somewhere in Currituck County, a childlike quest for fun took control and the dark cloud of sadness lifted. As I crossed the last bridge out of the Banks, I thought about a place I discovered a few years back that looked like a simple (gas station/ laundry mat) from the outside. The
THE MARSHALL PLAN
place is called Flippers Convenience and Arcade. This time I wanted my whole family to share in its magic. As we entered the front door a blinking, zonking, beeping, rattling, humming, wonderland dedicated to youthful time mismanagement unfolded before us. Smiles emerged. Hours passed. My wife and son battled it out on air hockey, my 10-year-old daughter went straight for the virtual reality googles. I made a beeline to a large backroom with a neon sign over the door that beamed Flippers Pinball Museum. This was what I remembered. There is something about the rows of vintage pinball machines that puts my mind on a nostalgic tilt. Strangely, I did not rush to play the machines. I went from machine-tomachine marveling at the art on the back glass. The countless bells, flippers, bonus blinkers and clanking silver balls on the playfield that were a fun part of my childhood in the 1970s and ’80s. It all seemed rather innocent compared to the legions of smart phone zombies that inhabit our world today. Remember the older folks saying, “Those arcades will ruin your life and turn you into a quarter scrounging delinquent!” Good luck finding a game that costs
a quarter now. Remember when MTV was an issue? We earned our fun one quarter at a time, not like you little WiFi leeches do now. Remember all the shady characters puffing Marlboros, showing off their first tattoos as they worked a pinball machine to earn a High Score? Remember Kelly Leak from the Bad News Bears? The best machines had back glass that honored horror movie icons, Playboy, Sci-Fi, rock bands and space aliens. I paused to lovingly stare at the KISS and Twilight Zone machines. So many memories of summer camps, skipped classes, old bowling alleys, pizza places and back-alley arcades flooded the mind. When I spoke to friends about my discovery many reflected with fondness about pinball machines and early video game stations tucked into stores and boardwalk arcades. Games like Pac-man, Tempest, Battle Zone, Space Invaders, Tetris, Donkey Kong, Defender and Galaga were the most popular. There were also fond memories of early home-based gaming platforms like Atari and Nintendo. The Tecmo Bowl battles with my brothers were legendary in our basement days. So, what happens when past
amusements meet the present? A friend in his 20s who now lives in New Orleans relayed his insight. “I’ve fallen in love with a local BBQ joint. They have four pinball machines. An old Playboy one, an Evel Knievel one too! I was lucky to find them. Young kids were running around overlooking them, as soon as I pulled the plunger, they all stopped what they were doing to watch. They had never seen such a thing. I gave a kid my last quarter and taught him how to play,” said William Campell. In retrospect, our love for games is centered on the need for little escapes from the real world. It was true in the past, and it is true now. I needed a lift of mood and a brief escape from my post-vacation blues and those pinball machines provided it. When I was in military school as a teen, we enjoyed our little escapes at places like Pinball Alley in Waynesboro. We squandered our precious quarters on pinball, pool, video games, Ciros pizza and nervous calls to girls. We even had this crazy thing called a phone booth. The dance of the silver ball through bells, ramps, gates, and buzzers still holds a certain magic. Seeing Elvira, Mistress of the Dark light up on a bonus play just made me smile.
Museum of Fine Arts’ Artmobile will be at Brandy Station Fireman’s Fair The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has announced that the Statewide Artmobile will be on display at the Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Department’s Fireman’s Fair on Thursday and Friday evenings, Aug. 12-13. Display times are 6-10 p.m. that Thursday and Friday. The Brandy Station Fairgrounds are located at 20057 Fleetwood Heights Road in Brandy Station, Virginia. The Artmobile is part of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’s VMFA on the Road’s new exhibition A View from Home: Landscapes of Virginia. Each year, VMFA on the Road, an Artmobile for the 21st Century, travels across Virginia from the Eastern Shore to the mountains of the Southwest. The exhibition of paintings, photographs, woodblock prints and engravings from the museum’s permanent collection explores the diversity and beauty of the Commonwealth’s natural landscape. The collection showcases artists of various styles and periods, who together record both the sublimity of unspoiled nature and the impact of human activity on the countryside. “Besides welcoming visitors to enjoy our collections and educational programming in our Richmond campus, VMFA is committed to bringing works of art to Virginians across the
Commonwealth. VMFA on the Road has done a fantastic job of doing just that,” said VMFA Director and CEO Alex Nyerges. “We are delighted to be showcasing works that highlight our own beautiful landscapes.” This exhibition is curated by Jeffrey Allison, VMFA’s Paul Mellon Collection Educator and Manager of Statewide Programs and Exhibitions. A View from Home: Landscapes of Virginia features multiple artists such as Adele Clark, Hullihen Williams Moore, George H. Benjamin Johnson, Miwako Nishizawa and others. In 1953, VMFA became one of the first museums in the world to have an Artmobile. For four decades as many as four Artmobiles toured 59 exhibitions and served more than 2.5 million Virginians. Due to conservation concerns and the fragility of traveling works of art, VMFA replaced the program in the early 1990s with a strategy to develop stronger partnerships with schools, community centers and museums around the state. VMFA re-launched its state-ofthe-art traveling museum and art studio called VMFA on the Road in October 2018. The climate-controlled 53-foot Volvo trailer includes Wi-Fi to connect visitors with VMFA educators and interactive components

He has been a steady hand to help small businesses and families navigate through state and local government regulations. “Jon puts Culpeper residents first and foremost,” Sen. Reeves said. “It is an honor to have worked with Senator Reeves over the last seven years,” Russell said. “He has been a good friend to Culpeper. RRHD announces new campaign to encourage COVID-19 vaccinations “I chose to get the vaccine because I don’t want to get sick.” “I got vaccinated for my grandchildren.” These are some of the voices local residents will hear in a new video series produced by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District. The videos aim to inform and answer questions for individuals who may feel hesitant about receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. They are being shared on the Rappahannock-Rapidan Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ RappRapHD/, and you can view the video series www.vaccinatepiedmont. com. Supported in part by the PATH Foundation, the video series features testimonials from patients, doctors and community leaders who have received the shot. One of those leaders is Alex Smith, Worship Leader and Director at Culpeper Baptist Church. “As we all know, this past year has been very challenging and tough for many of us,” Smith says in one video. “If you’ve lost someone, like I have, you know the importance of getting the COVID vaccine, so we can all get back to some sort of normalcy.” The videos are meant to address

several concerns expressed by community members: some may be worried about the efficacy of the vaccines, while others harbor concern over potential side effects. Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District Population Health Coordinator April Achter emphasizes that vaccines are not only safe, but an essential part of returning to prepandemic life. “We know it has been a difficult year, and that many may feel uncertainty about the vaccination process. By sharing science and reallife experiences from folks who have been vaccinated, these videos will help reassure our community that the shots are safe and effective,” Achter said. “Vaccines are our best shot at normalcy, and keeping our families
and communities safe.” As vaccination rates have increased in the district, vaccine doses have become more widely available, with many locations offering walk-in vaccine appointments. “There are so many vaccines available at this time,” said Dr. Joshua Jakum of Piedmont Pediatrics. “For those who are hesitant, we hope we can answer your questions and bring you peace of mind around your decision.” To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccines, or find a free vaccine appointment, visit www.rrhd.org or vaccines.gov. REC’s ‘NEW TOOL’ Aims to Cut Tree-Caused Outages
R
appahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) recently contracted with pilots at Aerial Solutions Inc. to clear rights of way in and around Shenandoah National Park and the Bentonville-area of Warren County to improve system reliability and resiliency. Though REC’s vegetation management team clears hundreds of miles of rights-of-ways each year, this was a sight to be seen. Attached to the bottom of a helicopter, a nearly 900-pound tool — made up of 10 saws, each with dozens of blades — is remotely guided along trees in the hard-to-reach mountainous area of REC’s terrority. As it goes along the tree line, the large saw cuts down branches that have the potential to fall onto power lines, causing a power outage. “The objective here is to clear the

right of way out to a 30-foot width,” said Sean Johnson, a pilot with Aerial Solutions Inc. “In about six work days, we covered almost 12 miles,” said Cindy Musick, director of Vegetation Management Services. “That’s a significant amount of work, but even more significant is that the amount of pruning that we are doing to try to harden these circuits is much more than we would ever ask a regular tree crew to do.”
Without the aerial saw, the same work would have taken months and would have been more dangerous for crews working in the field. “Using the aerial saw is very safe compared to having a crew climbing each tree with a saw in their hand or attached to their belt, roping each piece down, one by one, so it doesn’t hit the line and knock out power. Doing the work without the aid of the helicopter saw would have been extreme-
ly tedious with a set of unique challenges. “The mountainous area is very steep and would be inaccessible to our bucket trucks,” Musick said. She noted that the region also serves as home to plenty of snakes and bears, which can present an entirely different hazard for vegetation management crews. Musick noted that the aerial trimming was a team effort, with line crews on hand in case of an unintended outage and safety team members on site to ensure everyone’s well-being. “The line crews and REC’s safety team really stayed busy, taking limbs off the wires and setting the circuit equipment so it would have the least amount of impact on our members,” Musick said. “There was also a coordinated effort with REC’s communications team to let people know if a helicopter was going to be near their property and to talk about the safety measures that REC took to make sure this was an extremely safe work environment. “At REC, this has been a big group effort, and for our members we think this is going to be a raging success,” she said. “Trees are the No. 1 cause of power outages, and we are taking advantage of every available new tool to keep the lights on for our member-owners.”
