We’re trying to (equip) these kids with not only it being safe and secure in their school but also give them tips and tricks to deal with life. Rob Hefner Culpeper Sheriff Deputy and D. A.R.E. State Coordinator D.A.R.E., founded in 1983, will provide education to millions of children from kindergarten through 12th grade this year, who will gain the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs and violence. There are over 20 D.A.R.E. communities across the Commonwealth. In late June, deputies and police officers from various agencies in Virginia and North Carolina graduated at Eastern View High School after the successful completion of a twoweek long D.A.R.E. officer training program. The training produced 21 new instructors including local SRO Josephine Breckley. Hefner attended D.A.R.E. school in 2003, and by 2015, he was
promoted to oversee the training and implementation of D.A.R.E. programs across the Commonwealth. The training, he said, involves more than just the course materials but also teaches officers how to be relatable to children and how to deliver the program’s message. “When it comes to relationships between the officers and the kids,” Hefner said, “it's that relationship you have, the bond, the trust, that shows a different side of police.” “Any kind of skills, any kind of tools to kind of help them deal with life, I think we should try everything we can to do everything we can to help these kids to lead a successful life.” maria@culpepertimes.com

New fitness, rec center in Culpeper opens PATH Recreation & Fitness Center is located at 19002 Crossroad Parkway. BY

Nearly a year after breaking ground, PATH Recreation & Fitness Center hosted its grand opening on July 29-30. “We had hundreds of people, lots of kids,” said PATH Recreation & Fitness Center Director Tracie Massey. “It was wonderful. We had a great, great turnout.” Located at 19002 Crossroad Parkway, the center hosted a two day grand opening celebration for community members to tour and enjoy the offerings of the new construction. The facility includes two full-size, multisport courts lined for basketball, volleyball and pickleball, batting cages, a multisport simulator and activity room. “It was such a great opportunity for us because it, of course, gave us an opportunity to showcase our new place but there's a lot of people that don’t know we exist in Culpeper,” Massey said.

There was a lot of fun to be had during the weekend of celebrations for the grand opening of the PATH Recreation & Fitness Center on July 29-30. The new center opened its doors to the community to see the new construction and enjoy some of its offerings. Attendees had the opportunity to play volleyball, spikeball and hit balls in the batting cages. One of the most popular activities during the grand opening days, Massey said, was pickleball. “Pickleball definitely was the big draw,” she explained. “It was huge.” Upwards of 50 people, she explained, were playing the sport
across the celebratory weekend. Massey was even approached by a local pickleball team who plans to use the space routinely as it has the only indoor pickleball court in Culpeper. Other upcoming programs will include classes such as an introduction to pickleball, basketball, and volleyball, and beginner golf lessons on the multisport simulator, which also has
bowling, baseball, softball and disc golf. “We’re not just trying to appeal to the kids that are already athletes,” Massey explained. “It’s the kids that either can’t compete at that level or maybe their family can’t afford that sport. We want to be able to provide a place for them to come where they still ➤ See Rec Center, Page 6

Middle St. Gallery moves, reopens Middle Street Gallery has kept its name over several moves in 40 years. The Middle St. Gallery in Washington, Va. has moved and will begin its new life with an all-member show, Summer Dreams, from Aug. 5 through Sept. 5. In this show the 19 artists in the non-profit co-operative will consider the lazy, hazy, and not-so-crazy days of summer in Rappahannock County and a few points beyond. Thomas Spande will offer a rich, summer-lush painting of the Hazel River with “a verdant riverbank with a small frog perched and observing nature in its transformations and subtleties.” Meanwhile, Cathy Suiter ventures farther west, to the Shenandoah River, where she offers an oil painting with a view across the river to Springtime trees on the opposite bank. “Spring is the dream of Summer,” she said. Phyllis Northup also likes water and is showing a painting of two inverted canoes by a lake. “Floating down a river, swimming or paddling a canoe or kayak
on a mountain lake, or just relaxing by a pond or creek, all are things summer dreams are made of,” she said. Photographers Susan Raines and Jo Levine take us far from Virginia, Raines with a view of a lush summer garden in New Orleans and Levine with a pair of views of “gently undulating green hills of the Palouse Country in Washington State, with a soft, dreamlike quality.” Perhaps nothing in art is as dream-like as softly colored and diffusely detailed abstract paintings, and that’s just what Phyllis Magrab offers. “Thinking of the light and warmth of summer inspired my two renderings of Summer Dreams – palettes of warm colors, reflecting the summer sun, flow into my abstract images,” she explained. Photographer and digital artist Jim Serbent invites viewers to “feel the summer heat radiating from the sea rocks that form the backgrounds of these digital collage-prints from the Ganseki Koan – Japanese for
“Rock Puzzle” – series.” The puzzling but dramatic rocks remind one of something baked in a very long Summer heatwave. The ever-imaginative artist, Fae Penland, offers paintings of women’s shoes of various types – sneakers, ballet slippers, hiking boots. Of her painting, Suffragette Roots, she says, “It honors the boots women wore to protest for the right to vote. Their work helped enable us to wear the fun shoes that express freedom and be who we are. What better time than Summer to have fun being footloose and fancy free?” Anita Zymolka Amrhein is showing a lavishly colored and detailed watercolor, “A Charm of Hummingbirds.” “Summer is the time for these birds,” she says. “They are so much fun to watch, even though they seem to always fight for the food.” Middle Street Gallery, which has kept its name over several moves in 40 years, is now at 311 Gay Street, lower level, with an entrance on

VO I C E S The Marshall Plan | A Legacy of Joy BY
What constitutes a life well lived? Sadly, this discussion typically occurs at funerals and celebrations of life. We often believe that our favorite people are permanent players in our lives even though we know instinctively that life is transitory. What impact or ripple does our life create? Recently, family and friends gathered at Reformation Lutheran Church to honor the life of Wilma Erchull. Wilma was a beloved member of the Silver Club. She was the leader in the meeting room kitchen, a rock of life wisdom, a welcome scoop of humor and kindness each Wednesday as she made the coffee. Her accent was as noticeable as her smile and her ever changing hair colors. She was a proud New England lady with a heart of gold. Wilma listened to the Dropkick Murphys, read all the cool writers, and loved all my columns. Every member of the Silver Club appreciated her spirit, wit, and heart. When the club hosted the Country Troubadours, a popular local band,
Marshall Conner
Wilma would bring a wooden whistle to play along with the band’s train songs. She danced the Hokey-Pokey and clapped along with all the songs. She emanated a joy for life that was highly contagious. She also loved history and worked tirelessly in the Culpeper Museum, sharing our community’s history. Like many of us, she found a home in Culpeper and shared its many attributes with others. Pastor Bradley Hales, in his eulogy, spoke glowingly about a lady who changed the color of her hair to match the liturgical colors associated with the seasons of the church. He stemmed the tears of all assembled in her honor by citing examples of Wilma’s indomitable spirit and joy for life. Tears gave way to smiles and laughter as her legacy was celebrated. One story that Wilma liked to share was the origin story of one of her favorite sweet treats Dunkin Donuts. The company’s first coffee and donut shop opened in Quincy, Massachusetts in the late 1940s by William Rosenberg. She was a local.
“Wilma would always bring Dunkin Donuts for our church meetings—this continued even after she had to move to an eldercare facility. When I would visit her there, she would insist on slipping me cash and request that I still provide donuts for our church meetings,” recalled Hales. “Her legacy was the joy she spread in this life. She liked to share her fun-loving nature with others, her church, Silver Club, community, and her many friends. Her life had its hardships—yet through it all her focus was lifting people up and being a positive influence on this world.” Wilma’s life was built on service, hard work, love for family, community, and friends. My 11-yearold daughter was among her biggest fans. On her many visits to the Silver Club my daughter had a deep friendship with “Miss Wilma.” Both were excited to share interests each time they met. Wilma would always buy a large supply of Girl Scout cookies or support all her fundraisers--her support and friendship meant the world to my daughter. Life as it comes to its conclusion
leaves us with foundations anchored in love, faith, family, and an understandable fear of not seeing the conclusion of a story you helped create. The end of Wilma’s story is a legacy of bringing joy to all—a positive, colorful, force of nature that created smiles, laughter, and hope that in the end it will all work out for the best. The loss of Wilma felt like the loss of a family member. I like to think that she is smiling in heaven, sending a hug to us all with the warmth of a morning sun. Perhaps she will live on in the song of a fluttering bird or the laughter of kids. I will search the sky for a singing bird with a New England accent and colorful feathers. Thank you for your life, Wilma. You made the world a better place. Marshall Conner Marshall Conner is a contributing columnist.
That popular Fairfax name BY
Why are so many places in Culpeper County named Fairfax? The story starts in Kent, England at Leeds Castle. Thomas Fairfax of American fame was born there in 1693, the eldest son of the fifth Lord Fairfax whose wife Catherine was born a Culpeper. Thomas followed the pattern of most sons of titled Englishmen. He studied at Oxford, became a British army officer, then a London playboy. As the son of an English Lord, he divided his time between partying and fox hunting. He inherited a castle and other lands in England, as well as vast acreage in Virginia between the Rappahannock and the Potomac rivers. Like most aristocrats, he was land rich but cash poor. Reluctantly, he sold many of his holdings to pay his father's debts but he kept his lands between the headwaters of the Rappahannock and the Potomac. These had been granted to his grandfather, Lord Culpeper, in the late 1600s, and the rustic beauty of the area appealed to him — so much

so that he decided to relocate to Virginia. Relocating did not include managing his vast land holdings. He appointed agents for that. In Virginia, he named a cousin, William Fairfax, who settled his family in a red brick mansion on the Potomac called Belvoir. Thomas also settled into Belvoir, but only temporarily. Thomas came to the colonies as a bachelor. At one point, he had been engaged to be married, but his fiance broke the engagement shortly before the wedding to marry a man slated to be a Duke. Cousin William Fairfax, however, was a family man and his daughter Ann married Lawrence Washington, George's older step-brother. When George's father died at an early age, Lawrence stepped up to help and George was drawn into the Fairfax world through Lawrence. This gave George access to the excellent Fairfax library at Belvoir and greatly enhanced his education. Surveying, however, was his main interest as it promised to provide
income for his widowed mother and four younger siblings. Within five years, Thomas Fairfax decided to move west into the Shenandoah Valley and establish a hunting lodge and land office. He often invited young George, who was an excellent horseman, to join him for fox hunts. George's ability as a surveyor, however, did not go unnoticed, and he was soon hired to survey the Fairfax lands lying west of the Blue Ridge. The war years brought change. During the French and Indian War, Fairfax was the only English nobleman living in Virginia and one of its largest landholders. As such, he was given many honorable positions, one being commander of the militia in Frederick County. When the American Revolution divided the colonists into pro-British and anti-British groups, Fairfax remained loyal to the Crown, refusing to swear allegiance to Virginia, but nevertheless making no move to return to England. His 88 years of life ended two months after the American
victory at Yorktown. Much of the vast Fairfax land holdings ultimately ended up in the hands of settlers, pioneers, and merchants. The Shenandoah Valley became the major trading route through Virginia to Pennsylvania. It also became a breadbasket and mining hub. The Fairfax legacy continued to spread throughout Culpeper County. Fairfax City and Fairfax, West Virginia were named after him. Numerous streets, buildings, and a community college still bear his name. Thomas Fairfax's final resting place was Christ Episcopal Church in Winchester, Va. He never returned to the old country. Instead, he became part of the new, and that's why we still celebrate his name today. Sally Humphries Sally Humphries is a local writer and contributor.

Expos help aging population BY
There are no real secrets to the art of aging. What you need is right here in your own back yard, but many people are not aware of all the resources that exist. That’s why every fall Aging Together and its partners showcase the region’s programs and organizations that help everyone age well. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Aging Together has not been able to host the annual expo for the past two years, but this year we are back with a twist! The theme for this year is The Art of Aging Lifestyle and Wellness Expo, and rather than one giant expo, we will host 3 “mini” expos on different dates and in different counties. All mini-expos will have 25-30 exhibitors with information on services that support healthy and happy aging. Activities such as flower arranging, and exercise, and music will be available as well as

The importance of preventative pet dental care BY
Dental disease has profound consequences for your pets, supporting good dental care is important for you and your pet. A pet’s mouth is a gateway for bacteria that travel throughout the bloodstream to vital organs. Neglected teeth can lead to kidney damage, heart valve infections and other ailments that cause premature aging and death. Five reasons why preventative dental care is essential for your pet’s health; 1. tooth loss 2. bad breath 3. oral pain 4. organ damage 5. shortening of lifespan Indications of dental disease include: • Broken or loose teeth
Patty Werick
• Bad breath • Painful and bleeding mouth • Refusing or unable to eat and drink • Drooling Preventative measures are healthier and smarter than curing treatments, less pet trauma and less expensive! Check your pet’s mouth regularly and treat any dental issues as soon as possible to prevent more serious effects. At-home dental care can be highly effective, like feeding dry food, giving dental chews, and performing routine brushing, even 2 or 3 times a week (not with people’s toothpaste as that can be highly toxic to pets). Also, checking your pet for any redness of its gums, pain while eating, dropping food from its mouth, excessive salivation, or foul breath can help by showing a dental issue that you can
react to quickly. The most important preventative measure that can be taken is a routine oral examination by a veterinarian at least once a year. There is no substitute for professional vet care and dental cleaning. Anesthesia is considered vital to do a thorough job of cleaning along the gumline and between the gums and roots. Help your pet live a long, healthy life, avoid unnecessary pain and spend your money wisely with preventative dental measures. Spanberger votes don’t align with Culpeper I agree with my Democrat friends that Abigail Spanberger has a nice smile. I agree that she dresses professionally. I agree that when she is in Culpeper, she says things people want to hear, for example, how nice it would be to save lives by lowering the cost of prescription drugs.
Culpeper Times • August 4-17, 2022
What I don't agree with my Democrat friends about is how Abigail Spanberger votes. She voted to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the Civil Rights Act. She voted for the $1.9 trillion dollar stimulus package. She voted to restrict our Second Amendment rights. She voted to add
$1.5 trillion more in spending with dollars we don't have. In short, Abigail Spanberger voted with Nancy Pelosi's agenda at least 90% of the time. Check it out. What matters to you most? Her smile in Culpeper or her votes in Congress? Sally Humphries

Future-Ready Culpeper Graduates BY
Randi Richards-Lutz
On Aug. 10, Culpeper County Public Schools will welcome back approximately 8,000 students to our six elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools, Phoenix Alternative Education and the Culpeper Technical Education Center. We believe in all of our students and we will work hard to ensure that each of them will become “future-ready” upon graduation. What does “future-ready” mean? The outcome may look different for every student depending on if he or she goes straight into the workforce or goes onto post secondary education. It could also look like a combination of the two, but regardless the CCPS graduate will leave with the knowledge, skills, competencies, and experiences that our students will attain during their K-12 education to define them as “future-ready.” CCPS is very excited for our High Quality Work Based Learning (HQWBL) Program. While we have had students participate in cooperative education for decades and clinical experiences in recent years, students can now also participate in internships, mentorships, apprenticeships, service learning activities and more while in high school. For some students, they take many core classes early in high school and then they have choices centering around their individualized academic and career plan. Their choices could include a path to a four year degree, preparations for a two year community college degree like our Germanna Scholars program or a career and technical education program at their high school or the Culpeper Technical Education Center. In high school, a student might participate in cooperative education or he/she would participate in an apprenticeship program while working for a local business. While this is not a new philosophy, it is a shift in our state regulations. Currently, Culpeper County students earn many different industry credentials every year, but we would like to offer more. During the 2021-2022 school year ,over 1,400 industry credentials were earned by CCPS students including Servsafe, Microsoft Office Specialist exams, Adobe Certified Associate, Autodesk Certification, W!se Financial Literacy, Virginia Workplace Readiness Skills, NOCTI Agriculture Mechanics Certification, NOCTI Small Animal Certification, Certified Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, ParaPro, Automotive
Service Excellence and many more. We define “future-ready” as being prepared to succeed in the economy and in our community as a productive citizen as soon as they graduate from high school. “All students must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to reach their full potential,” said Thomas J. Gentzel, Executive Director of the National School Boards Association. “To better prepare the next generation, school leaders have to look at enhancing educational opportunities for all students, both college bound and career bound, to ensure future readiness for both.” Culpeper County educators and business leaders agree. If you have a child in elementary or secondary school you will see and hear more about this as the school year progresses. All schools will have various career, college, and citizenship activities throughout the school year. High school students will participate in our annual Career Exploration. Eighth graders will have a detailed Mock Interview experience with resumes, cover letters, a mock interview with local business leaders and more. Elementary students will have Career Exploration activities either virtually or on-site and they will begin Career Pathway inventories. In middle school, students will develop a detailed Academic and Career Plan and they will continue to work with their school counselor to make changes as needed. If you do not have a son or daughter in our school division, we hope you will follow us on this exciting journey as well. As you see the school buses back on the road and know that the students may be sad to see summer go, they are also excited for a new school year, to reconnect with or make new friends and perhaps run for class president, try-out for a new sports team or join a new club. You may see them at the local library or at the park, at the movies, in a restaurant or in a store. As you see a student recently back to school, no matter their age, know that with each day they are learning, watching, and growing into a graduate. A proud, Culpeper County, Virginia, Graduate. Randi Richards-Lutz Randi Richards-Lutz is the Career and Technical Education Director at Culpeper Technical Education Center.
