Local Residents: New Proposal to Relocate Septage Operation Stinks
COUGARS CONQUER CONCORDE
BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer
Dozens of Vienna and Reston residents expressed outrage Feb. 18 regarding a proposal by Fairfax County officials to relocate the Colvin Run Septage Receiving Site in Great Falls to the Fairfax County Park Authority’s Lake Fairfax Park in Reston. “There’s ‘shared community burden’ and there’s borderline ridiculous,” said Timothy Greten, a neighbor of the Lake Fairfax site who worried about its impact on the quality of his well water. Greten and others also complained about the short notice for the meeting, held at Bechtel Conference Center in Reston. County officials directed the firm of Hazen and Sawyer PC to conduct a feasibility study to determine whether improvements could be made at the more than 40-year-old Colvin Run facility, and evaluate possible alternative locations. “We want to make sure we’re not just moving the problem from one site to another,” said Ellen Hall, an engineer with the consulting firm. The Colvin Run site is outdated, inadequately secure, hard to access and lacks sufficient queuing space for trucks, officials said. The 22 trucks per day on average that use the Oakton High School’s Kailyn Fee, No. 30, dribbles the ball up court to break the press against the Centreville Wildcats in last week’s Concorde site have only one road in and out and must execute Conference semifinal game. Teammate Christian Butters is in the background. Oakton won that game, then later the title game. See story inside on Page 24 and a photo page of team action on Page 18.
