Historic sites and architectural wonders

Residents and visitors in the Mount Vernon-Springfield area can take advantage of opportunities to see sites that feature Founding Fathers, military history, architectural wonders, the oldest African American community in Fairfax County and more.

The most famous tourist attraction in the region is George Washington’s Mount Vernon, home of the nation’s first president.

In 1754, Washington began living at Mount Vernon, a 3,000-acre estate and a house that likely spanned about 3,500 square feet, according to MountVernon.org. By his death in 1799, his home consisted of about 7,600 acres and an almost 11,000-square-foot mansion.

Today, an estimated 500 acres of this historic property along the banks of the Potomac River have been preserved. In addition to the mansion, visitors can see the estate’s outbuildings, gardens, Washington’s tomb, a slave memorial and a working farm. The museum and education center trace Washington’s life story through exhibits, a 4D Revolutionary War film and the Be Washington Interactive Theater.

Mount Vernon is embarking on a landmark preservation project to safeguard the mansion’s original building fabric and ensure its structural integrity for generations to come. An enclosed work area will be fenced to the north of the mansion for the duration of this project. As work progresses through the house, individual rooms will be taken off display temporarily, and the path of tours through the mansion will change depending on the work that is underway.

The Shops at Mount Vernon also offer unique gifts, reproductions of Mount Vernon treasures, books, toys and more. Visitors can also tour the fully functioning reconstructions of Washington’s gristmill and whiskey distillery, located 2.7 miles from the estate’s main entrance.

Mount Vernon is the most popular historic estate in the country and is open 365 days a year. It welcomes an average of 1 million guests a year. Mount Vernon is owned and maintained by the nonprofit Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association of the Union. It doesn’t accept government funding, relying instead on private contributions.

Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House

Sitting on lands first inhabited by the indigenous Doeg people, Woodlawn mansion, built with enslaved labor and completed in 1805, was the center of a 2,000-acre plantation. The estate was given to Eleanor Parke Custis and her husband, Lawrence Lewis, by her step-grandfather, George Washington.

In 1846, Woodlawn was sold to the TrothGillingham Company, a group of anti-slavery Quakers who wanted to show that slavery was not necessary for the South’s economic and agricultural success. Working with the established free Black community and other local anti-slavery groups, Woodlawn served as an example of free-labor agriculture in a region dependent on enslaved labor.

Since 1949, Woodlawn and the surrounding 126 acres have been operated as a historic house museum, coming under the ownership of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1957.

Also on the property is the Pope-Leighey House, a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Usonian home. Built in Falls Church in 1941 for Loren and Charlotte Pope, the home was sold to Robert and Marjorie Leighey in 1947.

When the home was threatened by the expansion of Interstate 66, Marjorie Leighey, then a widow, campaigned to save the home. She agreed with the National Trust for Historic Preservation to move the house to Woodlawn in 1964, where she lived until her passing in 1983.

The region is home to a number of lodging options, as well:

 Baywood Hotels, for example, owns four properties along Richmond Highway. They are:

 The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Alexandria-Fort Belvoir, which has 86 guest rooms. Its guest rooms, lobby, breakfast space and meeting room were all renovated last year.

 The Springhill Suites Alexandria, which has 91 rooms and was renovated a few years ago.

 The Candlewood Suites Alexandria Fort Belvoir, which has 57 rooms that were renovated last year.

 The TownePlace Suites Alexandria Fort Belvoir, which has 93 rooms.

Lego Discovery Center open in Springfield

One of the newest attractions in the area is the LEGO Discovery Center Washington, D.C.

Located in the Springfield Town Center, the ultimate indoor LEGO playground opened in the summer of 2023. Families can play, explore, craft and laugh together and inspire the imaginations of children ages 2-12 with 1.5 million LEGO bricks in one location.

Discover George Mason’s historic home and 1-acre garden on 550-plus acres with Potomac River views – all just 15 minutes from Mount Vernon.

Visitors can see the rooms where Mason debated ideas and corresponded with historical figures, including four Virginia men who would later become U.S. presidents.

Kids can get tips and tricks from the Master Model Builder in the “Creative Workshop”; design their own LEGO car and test it out in “Build Adventures”; build, customize and launch a spaceship in “Spaceship Build and Scan”; and learn while having fun in “Duplo Park,” created for the littlest of builders. Visitors can create, build and play with the whole family.

The attraction also hosts birthday parties, special LEGO-themed events throughout the year, school field trips and LEGO education workshops.

Or, they can explore the interactive exhibit, “Revolutionary Rights,” and learn about his role as an influential political thinker, his authorship of the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights and why he was one of three delegates who did not sign the Constitution because it did not contain a Bill of Rights.

The area also boasts the National Museum of the United States Army on Fort Belvoir.

 Other lodging options on Richmond Highway include the Hampton Inn & Suites Mount Vernon/Fort Belvoir, Quality Inn Mount Vernon and stayAPT Suites for long-term accommodations.

 Located at the center of major transportation arteries, Springfield has several hotels for business or leisure travelers. The Hilton Springfield is near Springfield Town Center and has 245 guest rooms and 7,870 square feet of meeting space. Embassy Suites, Courtyard by Marriot and TownePlace Suites Springfield are also all good options for visitors.

Opened in 2020, it’s the first national museum to tell the Army’s history. It features nearly 1,400 artifacts, flight and tank simulators, a rooftop garden, a 300-degree theater and an activity area for young children. In 2024, the museum also will include a special exhibit in honor of the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The museum opened Warriors’ Plaza and Field in summer 2023. The outdoor plaza offers visitors a tranquil place to reflect on the stories told inside, while the adjoining field serves as a large outdoor space for public and private events. The Army Historical

Foundation recently launched a capital campaign to develop a Memorial Garden on the campus that will be dedicated to the sacrifices made by soldiers throughout history.

Gum Springs Black History Museum

The Gum Springs Museum tells the story of the first AfricanAmerican community in Fairfax County. Gum Springs was founded in 1833 on land given to West Ford by Washington’s family.

Gum Springs became a refuge for runaways and recently freed slaves and has maintained its distinct character. Gum Springs now has more than 2,500 residents, and as many as 500 are descendants of the families who first lived there.

The historical society owns and operates the museum. It was chartered in 1984 to tell the story of the oldest African American community in Fairfax. Its primary purposes are to authenticate the history of Gum Springs by preserving its heritage, culture, artifacts and traditions; to establish Gum Springs as a historic landmark; to create and stimulate

community awareness, appreciation and involvement in preserving culture and history; and to establish the museum to serve as a repository whereby the community may display artifacts that embody the cultural values and worldview of a people.

Local shops offer a variety of unique products

The Mount Vernon-Springfield area is home to retail businesses of varying sizes, all offering unique products to local consumers.

Stores include chain brands that may be familiar to consumers, as well as others that are locally owned. Shopping locally supports these businesses that enrich the region. Of every dollar spent in a local business, 67 cents stays locally to build the community.

Some important local shopping centers include Belle View Shopping Center, Hollin Hall Shopping Center, Brookfield Plaza, Hilltop Shopping Center,

Kingstowne Towne Center, Mount Vernon Plaza and Springfield Town Center.

The latter is a regional destination for shopping, dining and entertainment. It boasts several retailers, a 12-screen Regal Cinema, a Dave & Buster’s, and an LA Fitness with a swimming pool, sauna and basketball court. Added in 2023 at the mall was a LEGO Discovery Center, a toy-brick-inspired attraction for families.

Belle View Shopping Center is home to many small, unique stores that cater to the local community. One store in this retail center is UnWined.

A woman-owned and -operated business, UnWined was established in 2004. It offers a wine selection from around the globe and covering all price ranges, and its beer, cheese and gourmet departments highlight local and trailblazing artisans.

Proprietor Vanessa Moore and her staff believe buying wine should be inclusive, not intimidating. So they work to bring customers

wines they will love and to extend service that consumers can trust. They also host weekly tastings, emphasize hospitality and ensure the inventory is always growing and changing.

Among the unique stores at Hollin Hall Shopping Center is Urban Redeux. Owner Willow Wright opened the business in fall 2018 and moved to its current location in 2021.

Wright said she always loved vintage goods and antiques, so when the time came for her to throw her hat in the ring, she decided to create a vintage shopping experience different from what anyone else was doing.

The items at Urban Redeux are curated based on what’s happening in the design world, and Wright hopes every piece will be relevant in her clients’ homes. Whether their style is mid-century modern, grandmillenial, boho or contemporary, she aims to offer something

that will fit just so.

Urban Redeux also has been chosen as the best antiques store in the area by the Zebra Press for three years in a row.

Nothing Bundt Cakes, meanwhile, is in Brookfield Plaza. It’s the local franchise representing a brand that now has more than 500 bakeries across the United States and Canada. It offers bundt cakes in a variety of sizes that feature a signature cream cheese frosting.

Founders Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz started the company in 1997 in their Las Vegas home kitchens, and it has become the nation’s largest specialty cake company. It also was named No. 2 on Yelp’s Most Loved Brands list.

From woods to wellness, opportunities abound

The Mount Vernon-Springfield area boasts a wealth of indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities.

Residents and visitors can stroll through a wooded park, watch birds on the Potomac River or enjoy the premier facilities at the St. James wellness facility.

Lake Accotink Park in Springfield allows visitors to enjoy the natural resources of Lake Accotink and Accotink Creek, whether they’re hiking, biking or setting out on the water. It also has areas for picnics or special events.

The hustle and bustle of the Washington area seems a world away when traversing Lake Accotink’s trails or taking a quiet moment to sit by the water.

Nature lovers also can take a walk in Huntley Meadows Park and see wildflowers, wetlands, beavers and a notable house. That’s historic Huntley, a 19th-century Federal period villa built for Thomson Francis Mason,

Alexandria’s mayor from 1827 to 1830 and a grandson of George Mason, who wrote the Virginia Bill of Rights.

Wildlife is a frequent sight at Huntley Meadows, with more than 200 bird species having been identified in the park’s wetlands, the Fairfax County Park Authority notes.

“Some of the best wildlife watching in the Washington metropolitan area is here,” the Park Authority website says.

Another way to experience the outdoors is to play golf at one of the Fairfax County Park Authority’s courses, which range from par-3 to championship length.

Laurel Hill Golf Course, for example, spans

18 holes on land that used to house the D.C. Department of Corrections facility at Lorton. Architect Bill Love, whose credits include the Iron Forge Course at Penn National in Pennsylvania and Hunting Hawk Golf Club in Glen Allen, designed the course.

Pohick Bay Golf Course, one of Northern Virginia’s most scenic and challenging spots, offers 18 holes as well, and private courses include Belle Haven Country Club, Springfield Golf & Country Club and Mount Vernon Country Club.

The George Washington Memorial Parkway is a 7,600-acre national park that stretches from Washington’s Mount Vernon estate all the way to Interstate 495. It protects the landscape, historic sites and native habitat of the Potomac River shoreline while providing trails for walkers, runners and cyclists.

Fairfax County also provides several facilities for fitness and recreation, while local clubs have opportunities for children and youth to learn and compete in different sports.

In addition, the St. James in Springfield is a premier wellness facility where active families and professionals can train like elite athletes, play their hearts out and reach peak health and performance in their lives.

New developments keep real estate market healthy

Real estate in this region continues to be a good investment, according to local agents.

“The Mount VernonSpringfield area continues to be highly desirable with its close proximity to three Metro stations (Huntington, Van Dorn and Franconia-Springfield) and easy access to I-95, 395, and 495,” Realtor Jeff Pennington said in an email.

Continual development such as the new Franconia Governmental Center and the new Inova hospital coming soon in the Kingstowne area should help sustain increased home values for the next five to 10 years, Pennington said.

Spring in North Kingstowne

From garden and high-rise apartments and condominiums to townhouses and a wide variety of single-family homes, the area has dwellings to suit all tastes and lifestyles, he noted.

Many of these coveted neighborhoods have elementary schools in them, too, which is a plus considering Fairfax County schools are known around the country as being among the best of the best.

And these enclaves offer proximity to the District of Columbia, Old Town Alexandria and regular commuter routes.

One desirable location is Kingstowne, an urban community of more than 5,300 homes in Alexandria.

“Tree-lined streets and a vibrant town center make Kingstowne a great place to live and work,” the Kingstowne Residential Owners Corp.’s website says. “Kingstowne has a unique environment thanks to its 1,200 acres of well-maintained green space.”

Residents also enjoy many amenities, including several miles of walking trails, two swimming pools, tennis and pickleball courts, numerous tot lots, two fitness

centers and an aerobics studio, according to the site.

Not to be outdone, another Alexandria neighborhood even boasts homes with designs that were influenced by architectural icon Frank Lloyd Wright.

That’s Hollin Hills, which has one of the largest collections of mid-century modern homes in the country.

Other major communities are Springfield, West Springfield, Franconia, Huntington, Mount Vernon/Alexandria, and there are numerous planned developments such as Daventry, also known as Hunter’s Village; Ravensworth; Hunt Valley; Kings Park, and Orange Hunt.

The region is home to a host of retirement communities, too, many of which are operated by Sunrise Senior Living. These include The Fairfax in the Fort Belvoir area, Sunrise at Silas Burke House, Sunrise of Springfield and Sunrise at Mount Vernon.

Real estate sales have been on the rise in Fairfax County recently. The median sales price was $650,000 in January, an increase of 6.6% over the same time in the prior year.

More medical services coming soon to area

The Mount VernonSpringfield area already has a lot of health care options, and even more services are on the way.

Inova Health System this year will begin construction of a community hospital on land next to its existing Inova HealthPlex at Franconia-Springfield, providing more world-class health care options close to home for the greater Springfield community.

The campus plan is organized in a linear fashion anchored by the HealthPlex to the west and outpatient surgery center to the east with the hospital in the middle. The proposal also features a series of garden spaces, pathways and activity nodes that

would be accessible to patients and the community.

Inova has aimed to take great care in the layout and organization of the hospital and related buildings to minimize adverse effects on nearby properties and neighborhoods. The new Inova FranconiaSpringfield Hospital is expected to open in 2028.

Also important to the health care industry here is Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, a 225bed dedicated facility serving residents, from children to seniors, with 24-hour emergency care, radiology and laboratory services, general and specialized procedures and more.

recognized Inova Joint Replacement Center and the Inova Rehabilitation Center, Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is ranked among the country’s top orthopedic and rehabilitation programs. It also administers the Inova Wound Healing Centers, the region’s largest and most experienced centers of its kind, and Inova HealthPlex-Lorton, a full-service facility that combines the latest technology with an array of services.

In addition, the hospital last year opened a 20-bed behavioral health unit and a critical illness recovery hospital to care for medically complex patients who require an extended stay in a specialty hospital.

Kaiser Permanente, a nonprofit health system and health plan that provides care and coverage to more than 800,000

members in the Mid-Atlantic region, sees many patients in the Springfield area.

The organization’s Springfield Medical Center on Loisdale Court, near Springfield Town Center, includes allergy, dermatology, endocrinology, general surgery, neurology, rheumatology and wound care services and employs more than 200 people.

Another health care provider in the area, Patient First, offers urgent-care services.

Its facilities are open every day, including all holidays, and have on-site labs, X-rays and prescription drugs, which means patients can be seen, diagnosed and treated in a single visit.

Opportunities abound from elementary to higher-ed

The Mount Vernon-Springfield area contains lots of educational opportunities, whether you’re a youngster learning your ABCs or a high school graduate looking to further your career.

The Franconia, Mount Vernon and Springfield communities have 48 elementary schools, seven middle schools and eight high schools: Thomas A. Edison, Hayfield Secondary, John R. Lewis, Lake Braddock, Mount Vernon, West Potomac, West Springfield and South County.

Local high schools host Advanced Placement courses as well as the International Baccalaureate program. Some high schools also have a specialized academy that offers advanced technical and specialized courses that successfully integrate career and academic preparation. These courses include veterinary science, automotive repair, construction management and information technology.

Overall, the Fairfax County Public Schools system is one of the largest in the United States with 199 schools and centers.

For higher education opportunities, Northern Virginia Community College has two campuses in the area – one in Springfield and the other in Alexandria.

The Springfield location is NVCC’s Medical Education Campus. It opened in 2003 and is a collaboration among NVCC, clinical organizations, George Mason University, Virginia Commonwealth University and regional public school systems.

The campus offers health-related programs and boasts of state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories, dental clinics and a clinical practice site for nursing and health sciences students.

It’s the only medical campus at a Virginia community college, said Provost Shelly Powers.

students per academic year. But it’s about to expand as it secured $25 million in state funds to build the 37,000-square-foot Center for Medical Excellence, which should open within five years. The center will contain a virtual hospital that will simulate work for students in hospital facilities including a triage area, telehealth services, and laborand-delivery rooms.

This year the medical education campus will be celebrating 20 years of excellence through several events in May, including an anniversary dinner on May 9 and a family-and-friends day on May 11.

Meanwhile, NVCC’s Alexandria campus has grown from one building in 1969 to an institution that has more than 14,000 students and is a regional center for workforce development.

No matter what flavors get your taste buds going, this area can satisfy your craving for food and drink.

Capital Chicken, Bonefish Grill and Fair Winds Brewing Company, along with a wide variety of establishments at Springfield Town Center, are among outstanding restaurants here offering different menus and price points.

Capital Chicken

Peruvian chicken purveyor Capital Chicken was set to open in March at a new location on Richmond Highway in Alexandria. It first opened in December 2016 as “Limon Pollo a la Brasa” in the Mount Vernon Shopping Center and was owned by Carla Alvarado’s father and partners.

Alvarado explained that when her father was 10, he began helping his mother in their chicken restaurant in Lima, Peru, and he brought that knowledge to America. As he got busier and older, though, he put Alvarado in charge of the business, and she eventually took over control from the original owners.

“I went from working a 9-to-5 behind a desk to now standing behind a kitchen counter,” she wrote in a history of the operation. “It was truly the best and hardest decision I had ever made.”

She also got married, and together the couple came up with the new name, “Capital Chicken.” But that wasn’t the only thing Alvarado thought about changing.

For seven years, she made the drive from her Lake Ridge home to Alexandria, passing 8339 Richmond Highway and thinking that the building had so much potential.

Last year, she was able to make her dream a reality, and she began the process of moving the restaurant there. Capital Chicken closed in July and was set to reopen at the new site this spring.

Bonefish Grill

Kingstowne’s Bonefish Grill is part of a chain of seafood restaurants that specialize

in market-fresh fish that are hand-cut in-house every day. The restaurants also feature local wine and beer and signature hand-crafted cocktails.

The chain began in January 2000 in St. Petersburg, Fla., where founders Tim Curci and Chris Parker opened the first Bonefish Grill, prompted by their shared love for catching and cooking fresh fish.

Bonefish is part of Bloomin’ Brands Inc., the company that began in 1988 with Outback Steakhouse. Since then, the operation has expanded to include Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, and Aussie Grill by Outback.

Fair Winds Brewing Company

The folks at Fair Winds Brewing Company say they built their operation to provide fresh, local craft beer to their neighbors and friends in Fairfax and throughout the state and the District of Columbia, and it’s now the county’s oldest and largest-production brewery.

The idea is that craft beer shouldn’t be onesize-fits-all, but instead should complement a given moment or add to an experience.

All of the company’s beers are veganfriendly and gluten-reduced, and the brewery and accompanying taproom in Lorton hosts regular events and has food trucks on site seven days a week.

Army installation is a major employer in the area

Fort Belvoir is a U.S. Army installation in southeastern Fairfax County that is home to more than 150 Department of Defense agencies and partners dedicated to protecting the security of the nation.

Fort Belvoir provides training, technological developments, research and intelligence gathering to support national defense.

 Fort Belvoir covers almost 9,000 square miles and has three distinct areas:

 The main post, where more than 150 defense agencies reside.

 Fort Belvoir North, home to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

 Davison Army Airfield, where the Army Aviation Battalion is headquartered.

With nearly twice as many workers as the nearby Pentagon, Fort Belvoir is the largest employer in Fairfax County, with an annual economic impact of more than $28 billion to the region. Almost 7,000 service members

from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps work on post, with more than 17,000 Defense Department civilians employed there.

The greater Northern Virginia community supported by Fort Belvoir’s services include off-post active-duty military, active-duty dependents, Army Reservists, and retirees and their dependents, all of which total more than 216,000 people.

Additionally, the National Museum of the United States Army – one of the newest museums in the Washington region – opened on Fort Belvoir in 2020 with free admission

and easy access off the Fairfax County Parkway. The museum celebrates more than 245 years of Army history and honors our nation’s soldiers – past, present and future –who have served in the regular Army, Army Reserves and Army National Guard.
