Arlington Teacher and Principal of Year Lauded Jennifer Burgin of Oakridge Elementary School has been named Arlington Public Schools’ teacher of the year, while McKinley Elementary School’s Colin Brown has been named principal of the year. Candidates for Arlington School Board seem to be unanimous that the school system needs to get more creative in accommodating a growing high-school population, before it embarks on planning for a fourth comprehensive high school. The comments came as the four candidates for the Democratic endorsement squared off in their first debate, held April 6 during the monthly meeting of the Arlington County Democratic Committee. “Let’s look at high school a little differently,” said Tannia Talento, one of three first-time candidates who will share the Democratic ballot with School Board Vice Chairman Nancy Van Doren. The top two finishers in the May caucus will move on to the Nov. 8 general election. Talento, who has the backing of School Board Chairman Emma Violand-Sánchez (who is not seeking re-election), said she would like to see high school more closely reflect college – with students coming and going to class throughout the day.
