The president's report By the time this edition is printed the Buderim Men’s Prestige 4’s will be run and won. I have no doubt that it was once again a huge success. These events can only be successful if you have a very willing team to manage such an event. I would like to thank Ted Field (Games Director) and his 2 offsiders Noel Spurway and Col Harris for their dedication in carrying out their duties. The next couple of months will see the playing of the Singles and Pairs District Champion of Champions, I am sure our representatives will perform very well in these events. The sub-committee for the Club refurbishment program has met twice in recent weeks. A detailed proposal is being prepared by the subcommittee to present to the Buderim Bowls Club Men’s Committee for consideration. This proposal should be ready for consideration shortly. In the meantime under the guidance of the Senior Vice President we will be carrying out a few noticeable improvements to some of the amenities, these being the men’s interior toilets and the men’s toilets to the rear of the clubhouse as well as the disabled toilet in the same area. I know some of our members will be pleased with the latter as they have expressed their concern as to the state of those toilets. Obtaining a new Club Flag has been a very trying experience. Our normal supplier has had staff health problems that have caused a long delay in
obtaining the flag. A new supplier is now in the process of providing the flag. For those members who like to dabble in Keno, the opportunity has now arrived to do same at our Club. The more money invested in Keno at the Club means more money for the Club as we are paid a percentage on monies invested. In other words the Club can’t lose. Remember, however, gamble responsibly. Thanks to all the members who have nominated for pennants this year. To date well over 60 players have nominated. This has pleased the selectors. It gives them the opportunity to start trialing for the upcoming season. This will be the first time our new shirts will be on display to other clubs and from the feedback received so far the shirts are very well received. So don’t forget if you are playing pennants you must have a new shirt. (See Steve Mason please). An inaugural meeting was held on Wednesday 20th May in the Clubhouse with the aim of obtaining interest from Sunshine Coast clubs who wish to participate in the 8’s competition that hopefully will commence next January. The meeting was well attended by outside clubs and the prospect of it getting off the ground looks quite favourable. More on that next edition. Until next month – good bowling.

senior vice report by Lee Shimbel The last couple of months have been busy at the club with some special bowling events and several functions plus a busy time with bare foot bowlers. As we look forward we have Prestige Fours and Pennants coming up. I was delighted to see 78 bowlers on the greens recently on a Saturday afternoon Behind the scenes we continue to work to maintain the membership and club assets. In an attempt to attract new members and better utilize our club facilities we have started advertising in the Buderim Chronicle. We have updated our current web site but because it was built some time ago with old technology we have started a complete rebuild which will incorporate new technology. This will enable us to modify the site easily and incorporate new functionality that will help all members keep up to date with activities at your club. There have recently been sightings of unwanted “critters” in and around the club so
we have had the club sprayed to eradicate unwanted creepy crawlies. The state of the men’s outside toilet block has been brought to my attention on more than one occasion with respect to its cleanliness and general appearance. We will implement an update/improvement plan to improve the condition of the block including the shower and disabled toilet. In keeping with this planned improvement program we will also carry out some much needed repairs to the inside men’s toilet as well. The new club shirts look really good, it is great to see so many of them already being worn on club competition days. The fine figure of a man on the right looks sharp and there is no doubt which club he plays for. There is no prize for identifying this mystery man.
junior vice report by Brian Perrin It may have been noticed in the last few weeks we have had a number of barefoot bowls functions with more bookings expected. I would like to thank Max Hagan and his band of helpers for their assistance. Once again a roster is being prepared for members to participate in helping out with bare foot bowls this roster will be made up of pennant and 7’s players. It seems to be the same faces who put their hands up as willing helpers so stay tuned for more
details. A function for members of the club and their friends being “Christmas in July” will be held on Sunday 26th July at 12.30 pm (see flyer in this bulletin). We have sourced a very good local chef to cater for this function together with local entertainment to tap your feet to and dance the afternoon away so please come and support the club as we try to utilise the club more.
greens report by Jon Herriot Update on greens. Members may have noticed that the mould on the back green is once again quite visible, particularly when the carpet is wet. Sportcrete has been approached re the delivery of more anti mould solution. This solution should be on hand in the next couple of weeks. Once we have the solution the green will be sprayed accordingly. A date had been locked in to stretch the carpet on both greens but unfortunately the day Sportcrete were to begin work the heavens opened up and that was the end of that. Sportcrete
is preparing a revised timetable for the stretching of the carpet and we should have that timetable in the near future. When Sportcrete do carry out their work we will need approximately 20 helpers to lift the carpet, so be prepared please to help out. Further work has being done on the shades. Most of the holes have now been repaired thus giving us the chance of obtaining full life out of the shades.
games director's report by Ted Field The State titles, Men’s Singles, Men’s Fours and Ladies Singles were completed successfully on Friday 8 and Monday 11. I would like to commend our staff girl Cathy and Provedore Max Hagan for the smooth running of their part the operation, particularly Cathy who started early on the Monday to help rearrange the catering. Sunday May 24 saw the final between Noel Spurway/ Don Snellin and Steve Curry / John Taylor. Congratulations to Steve & John on their success. Thank you to every who participated in the competition. The Club Triples is our next championship. Nominations are now being called; close on Monday June 8 and play commences on Sunday June 28. Our Prestige Fours Event is full with 28 teams competing on Saturday May 30 and Sunday May 31. Catering& Bar is in hand with Max Hagan, Jeff Paterson, Umpires by Alan Quartermaine, Money and Prize envelopes John Murphy, Cards & scoreboard Noel Spurway, Microphone Col Harris and President Barry
Ashby, welcoming all competitors. We need a few members to help with the serving of lunch and clearing up and a raffle person. Names to Max Hagan please gentlemen. I have noticed some players still dumping their bowls and this has been brought to the attention of the committee of a number of players offending. Before you get a letter, buy a bowling arm. See demonstration date on notice board. Also mentioned in last Bulletin, scores were not being put on score boards. The relevant Domestic Regulations states: The scoreboard may be updated at any time by any person but must be updated at least every second end and the Skip is responsible for ensuring it is correct as per the scorecard, except if the responsibility for ensuring it is correct, has been passed from the Skip to the Second in Fours as per DR 3.2.4, then the Second is responsible for the accuracy of the scoreboard. Sorry to bring this up again, but it is good for all players to know the state of the game as it proceeds.
treasurer report by John (I Can Hear You Now) Murphy Trading for the period January – April is slightly down on Budget mainly due to a reduction of approximately $3,000 in green fees due to the unusually bad weather in February and March that also has effect on our bar trading and raffle income. We are however confident that we will be back on budget at the end of May. As foreshadow at the AGM in February “KENO” should be up and running by the last
week of May. Our staff are receiving training on how to handle the “KENO” transactions but we do ask you to be patient if they are a little bit slow whilst they gain the experience in this new form of Gaming for our Club. We do ask members and visitors to ensure that they Gamble responsibly at all times.

Our Club Championships are well underway with the Fours, Singles and Pairs completed and the Triples progressing. Our Games Director Valda Barrable and her assistant Jan Hagan have to games department running well. They are preparing for your next Open Pairs on 17th June and our major event for the year, the Buderim Fiesta on 7th July. Pennant training is held every Tuesday morning from 10.30 with our selectors, Jan Muir, Jill McNeil and Helen Hawthorne keeping a keen eye on us all. Brian West and Warren Watson are doing the hard slog coaching us so a big thank you to them for giving up so much of their time to help us. I have a feeling this is our year to bring home that elusive flag. A new website has been established on the Sunshine Coast where any events can be posted. The site is justbowls.info. It will be good to publicise our events and to see what else is happening around the coast. The State Championship Ladies Singles were held here on Monday 11th May and there were some very good bowls, although I did note that the bowlers seem to be getting a lot younger. I

marked one game and really enjoyed it – I was able to see how it should be done. Valda and Jan did a great job organising their part of the day. On Tuesday 12th May we farewelled a long term member of our Club, Joan Grant, who has moved to Toowoomba after 20 years with us. Her circumstances have changed in the last year making it necessary for her to move closer to family support. Joan has been a very generous donor over the years and has sponsored the annual President V Secretary challenge since its inauguration in 2006. She was also a very willing worker in the kitchen on Tuesday play days and was always available to sell raffle tickets and do any other jobs on our special days. Our Patroness Alma Smith and Providore Mary Tidey provided a spectacular afternoon tea and SVP Alva Ogden and I presented Joan with flowers, chocolates and a Certificate of Meritorious Service on behalf of the club. Joan was very moved by the whole day and we wish her well in her new life. The weather is absolutely beautiful at the moment so I hope everyone makes the most of it and gets out on the green.

Ted Field, Noel Spurway and Col Harris guided us through the paper work and we saw some good bowling by some very youthful ladies. Our Triples Championship has commenced and the Pairs Final was played last Tuesday at an earlier starting time of 11 am. Congratulations to the Club Pairs Champions for 2015 - Alva Ogden and Jan Harvey who defeated Sandy King & Valda Barrable 20 – 14.

Just for a laugh Lemon Picker Wanted The woman applying for a job in a lemon orchard seemed to be far too qualified for the job; given her law degree from the University of Sydney and her previous jobs as a corporate lawyer and company director. The foreman frowned and said, "I have to ask you this: have you had any actual experience in picking lemons?" "Well, as a matter of fact, I have!” "I've been divorced three times, owned 4 Fords, barrack for Collingwood and I voted for Clive Palmer. If anyone is offended by this tell someone who cares, (another Collingwood supporter perhaps).
