BREATHING FORM for flute, oboe, clarinet in Bb, horn in F, bassoon. Written for Maria Ackroyd
Performance notes: - Non vibrato throughout the piece. - Thick straight lines after a note indicate a long tone. Beams indicate exact duration of sustained tones and exact positions of dynamic changes. Beams do not indicate metric attacks. Attacks should be directed only by the notated dynamic changes. - Dynamic marking ''o'' indicates zero volume and a fade-in or fade-out. - Breathing should be as subtle as possible without breaking the continuity of the sustained tone. Thus, long exhalations are desirable, while all breathing should take place at (or around) zero notated volume. Breathing points are left to the discretion of the instrumentalists. Coincidence of breathing points between instruments should be avoided. - Teeth on reed on clarinet (on measure 86), indicates a gradual biting of the reed in order to transform the pitched tone into a high inharmonic/noisy tone. - Tremolo on beams indicates ''flatterzunge'' that should slightly distort the original tone.
Program note: Breathing Form is a piece written in 2014 and is based on timbral variations of a sustained tone which is the result of the combination of the five instrumental timbres altered through different modulation envelopes. While the piece demands a continuity of tone by the wind instruments it also takes advantage of the, inherent in the winds, gestural language produced by the physical breathing of the instrumentalists.
